“Looking at the Doom Charts, she cried, “More, more, more”
~ misheard Billy Idol lyrics
With a rebel yell, she cried, “More, more, more,” wow!”
There’s always more! I don’t know about you; but we’re still listening to all those amazing albums that made the August Doom Charts! And those that came before… But Billy Idol already knew there’s always more more more… So, here’s the Peroration Post for August, opening yet another closet door… Filled with albums that might have made the list or perhaps didn’t for some weird and probably insane reason… Either way, the Contributors could not stop listening to all of these… And they still hunger for more…
The following are words of adoration from Doom Charts Contributors, devotions to albums they could not stop spinning. Each month, our writers gather to celebrate the finest in doom, sludge, metal, stoner, progressive, psychedelic, and other heavy realms. Their selections are woven into the Doom Charts, published on the first Friday of every month. But some affections run too deep for the regular edition. Some albums fall just outside the chart, or inspire so many write-ups, and only one was chosen. Here, those excesses of love remain… Unfiltered, unbound, and still echoing… A few last words which hopefully will inspire you to listen to those albums…
10,000 YEARS – ESOX LUCIFER
Stoner Metal, Sludge Metal
Västerås, Sweden
Ripple Music
10,000 YEARS is one of those bands that has its own sound that you can distinguish from any other band out there, but you still never know what you are going to get out of their music, except that it is going to be killer. Killer is exactly what the band’s new record, Esox Lucifer is. The sonic blast of proggy psych metal goodness leverages all of the classic metal favorites of head Year Alex Risberg’s favorites, while incorporating all sorts of other heavy goodness, with some atmospheric leanings and even a bit of a Black Metal feel. The trio still manages to make all of these parts work perfectly together, giving us a heavy explosion that hangs with the rest of their amazing catalog.

APHONIC THRENODY – GRACE MY HEART
Funeral Doom, Death/Doom, Gothic Doom
United Kingdom, England
Self-released
“Grace My Heart,” is an album that feels like an honest expression of the shades of life that we so often shy away from or try to sweep into the shadows, away from where we never trend. This album isn’t simply embracing these shadows—-it is them. How do we face loss? How do we measure grief? Can there be beauty again? Or is life and death not about loss and gain or sad and happy? Maybe that’s just what life is. It isn’t good or bad, but just an experience that we all must learn to live through in our own ways? These are the questions I ask myself whenever I play this album. I don’t know if these are notions of the band or not—I can only express what I feel when I listen to their music. But that’s the beauty of their music, and music in general: each of us has our own journey and must take things the way only we can. Does that not mirror life experiences as well?

BREATHS – DESCENT
Doom, sludge, post-metal, doomgaze
Richmond, Virginia, USA
Self-released
BREATHS takes us deep into Dante’s Inferno. Descent is the first part of a planned two-album journey through Hell, moving from the Gates of Hell through the first circles of damnation to the Styx. Crushing heaviness, despair and an oppressive atmosphere make this a journey that leaves a mark long after the music stops.

DAILY THOMPSON – GLUE
Indie Rock, Alternative Rock, Grunge
Dortmund, Germany
Noisolution
n their previous album Chuparosa, DAILY THOMPSON utilized more of a classic stoner sound, celebrating the influence of greats such as Fu Manchu and Kyuss while ensuring that their individuality shone through at the same time. Their new album Glue, on the other hand, is all DAILY THOMPSON, all heart. Not only does this release build upon the band’s signature stoney grunge, but it takes their authentic, impassioned sound to the next level. Between the infectious grooves of Glue, raw emotion soaks through, permeating the listener’s heart and soul. This level of emotional intensity leaves no question that each and every note and word comes from a deep, intimate place. In an age where technology and AI are unabashedly infiltrating the creative process, Glue makes an impactful statement by boldly keeping the raw emotion and humanness in the art of songwriting. However, I think the message the band intends to send here is even simpler and infinitely more powerful: “Love is all you need”. It’s the “glue” that holds us together.

DESERT MANTRA – SARNOSO SESSIONS
Psych, Stoner, Progressive Rock
Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico
Self-released
DESERT MANTRA bring us three tracks of hypnotic, heavy psychedelic rock recorded live in the Sierra del Sarnoso. A hazy trip through expansive landscapes and desert atmosphere, the EP highlights the band’s ability to create intricate layers and textures without the comfort of a studio, allowing the performance to stand completely on its own. There are moments of tranquility that then build into soaring walls of sound, blending meditative rhythms, expansive psychedelia, and the unmistakable influence of Pink Floyd. Set the controls for the heart of the desert.

DESTROY MY BRAINS – WILT
Doom, Sludge, Metal
Lloydminster/North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada
Self-released
DESTROY MY BRAINS is one of those bands that is the antithesis to the world itself. They are up there with Primitive Man and Anaal Nathrakh for one of the most extreme and pissed off metal bands of all time. “Wilt,” continues that trend—and then some. This album sounds like what nonmetal heads hear when someone plays them extreme metal. For a metalhead like me (and you), all this angry noise is music to the ears. “Wilt,” is a filthy, dangerous album that embraces the mentality that metal shouldn’t be safe or comfortable. When a boomer or normie says metal music will send you to hell, guess what? They and everyone else is already there. The world we live in is fucking insane and gets worse everyday. DESTROY MY BRAINS and “Wilt” doesn’t turn away from this and instead steers into the skid…and exploding bodies the entire damn time. The band’s core sound of “fucking a cinder block raw” remains intact. Doom, sludge, hardcore, death…whatever you want to call this or whatever it may or may not be, the common factor here is how extreme it all is.

FAERIE RING – FAERIE RING
Doom, Stoner
Evansville, Indiana, USA
King Volume Records
FAERIE RING’s self-titled third album resurrects vintage doom, hard rock and heavy metal in a blaze of psychedelic color. Massive yet spacious, gritty yet soulful, these ten tracks fuse seventies swagger with modern psych and stoner heft. Haunted by love, loss and existential dread, FAERIE RING forge a wild, unforgettable sound. FAERIE RING is magical!
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)
FANE – ARMAGEDDON SCARS
Doom/Sludge Metal
Buffalo, New York
Self-released
This album is a total banger. I love how balanced it is. “Armageddon Scars,” balances doom and sludge perfectly. It’s low and slow without being plodding and languishing around trapped in its own sound—this darkness is always moving forward. The riffs are thick as hell, a sonic density that is unbreakable. That’s how doom should be. Period. But the tone is nasty and abrasive just like sludge to me. It’s melodic in the right places and takes this path with a subtle approach—a slow loving glacier that edges its way through with singular purpose. The vocals are fantastic too. They sit somewhere between death growls and a Crowbar style rough shout. If that doesn’t appeal to you then I guess you don’t like good things. Nerd.

GRIMESTONE – KILLING FLOOR
Occult Rock, Heavy Rock, Proto
Eskasoni, Nova Scotia, Canada
Self-released
I was introduced to one of my new favorite bands by a simple, yet intriguing email: “Hi y’all we’re GrimeStone, we are a 4 piece indigenous band from Cape Breton Nova Scotia, we play occult rock/heavy metal.” That is all I needed to dive in, and I’m sure glad I did, because the songs on GRIMESTONE‘s debut record, Killing Floor, are some of the best occult/proto metal I have heard in a very long time. This is raw and real stuff from a place you don’t hear a lot of killer proto metal coming from, and whoa boy I can’t stop listening.

HEATHEN TONGUES – NEUROGENESIS
Metal, Sludge, Crust, Instrumental
Denver, Colorado, USA
Self-released
Drums, guitar, a sample here or there and a whole lot of attitude! I guess Neurogenesis is what happens when two lunatics lock themselves in sound proof rehearsal room with the determination to combine crust punk, sludge, post-metal and all the distortion they can muster to make the walls extend outwards and start sweating blood! It’s HEATHEN TONGUES’s debut, and the eleven minutes tear through the two tracks with huge riffs, bleak melodies, minor psychedelic detours and grooves that hit like a monster truck running entirely on bad intentions. As a two-piece Devin Mendoza and Shane Falkenhart sound ridiculously enormous!

HIBUSHIBIRE – PHANTOM FUZZY LOGIC
Rock, Hard, Psych, Garage
Osaka, Japan
Riot Season Records
Like being shot out of cannon! A HIBUSHIBIRE’s fifth studio album Phantom Fuzzy Logic is one hell of an intense and rapid onset of a trip. Like somebody spiked the fuel tank of a seventies rock ‘n roll Cadillac and pointed it straight into the heart of the American dream. Or a psychedelic desert! Kapow, the Osaka quartet floor the accelerator immediately with opener Mandrake Oracle, dragging me deliriously happy and screaming into a neon fever dream where motorik versions of Purple, Zappa, Airplane and cosmic Japanese psychedelia all collide in one magical kaleidoscopic freak out!

KUYPER – THE GREAT BELT
Stoner Rock
Itzehoe, Germany
Self-released
KUYPER is a trio from Itzehoe, Germany who draws upon their passion for stoner rock on a broad scale, including its offshoots and amalgamations in their larger-than-life sound. Their debut EP The Great Belt is a collection of five songs clearly fashioned by a group of musicians with a profound love and respect for stoner rock and its subgenres. You’ll hear nods to stoner/desert, psychedelic, space, and heavy rock with a strong backbone of southern-leaning heavy blues. And, while big names such as Kyuss, Fu Manchu, and Truckfighters will certainly float around your mind as you listen, the best part of The Great Belt is it still projects a strong, independent identity. With a knack for playing a wide variety of ultra-infectious stoney sounds in a palpably spirited way, KUYPER is poised to become a mainstay in the heavy underground scene – not just in their home country of Germany, but on a global scale.

LUNAR RUINS – THE EXPANSE
Grunge, Stoner
Melbourne, Australia
Self-released
For this listener, going in knowing that someone played all instruments on a record gets my ears perked up to listen for obvious cut and paste situations, which is unfair, but I can’t always control my brain. Well, in the case of the new record from LUNAR RUINS, my brain had no problems because the nine songs that make up The Expanse sound as much like a full band playing that I have heard from a project with one dude manning all the instruments, which to my ears is a really hard thing to do. Oh, also, it absolutely rips, and should be played at 11. These stoner/grunge bangers will kick your ass from Melbourne, Australia to Melbuone, Florida.

MASSIVE HASSLE – PLOTGONE
Doom, Psych, Heavy Blues
Nottingham, UK
Self-released
Of course we know Bill and Marty Fisher from Mammothwing and Church of the Cosmic Skull infamy, well, the brothers are back with their third album as MASSIVE HASSLE. The very accomplished two-piece continues to prove that you don’t need a full band to make a massive sound. There is so much heart and soul throughout Plotgone, largely in part to the outstanding vocal harmonies. Their vocals fit so well together, creating a warmth that gives the album an undeniable emotional pull. Give the song 1999ish a listen and you’ll agree. Another highlight is Marty’s playing and his fingerpicking technique, I can’t think of anyone that has his style and sound, it’s bluesy, unique, and absolutely brimming with character.

MASTODON – MARROW DEEP
Sludge, Stoner, Progressive Metal
Atlanta, USA
Loma Vista Recordings
It is easy to overthink things and not just let the music guide you. I joked that I agonized over if I should add the new Mastodon classic, Marrow Deep, to my submission for this month, when I just should have firmly listed it with no questions asked, because this is the best record the guys have put out in a decade and when all is said and done will be a top five Mastodon record. Yes, we all miss Brent (for so many reasons) and no one can ever replace him, but the 2026 version of Mastodon is on another planet. The songwriting is off the charts, the playing is all virtuoso level, it is complex without sounding like it is too much, all, still somehow sounding so raw and so real. For good measure, let’s throw in some godfathers of the Doom Charts as guests (Geezer! Homme! Fallon!) and there should be zero question why I or anyone else has Marrow Deep on their list.

TEETH KIDS – FAKE HELL
Sludge, Noise Rock
Chicago, IL, USA
Self-released
People are pissed these days. I get it, but I need relief. Listening to the outstanding new album Fake Hell from TEETH KIDS certainly provided some catharsis. Coming from the great Windy City I’m sure provides the inspiration for the sludgy vitriol that seems seep out of the pores of this six piece both musically and lyrically. Track after track batters you with that perfect mix of heaviness and psychedelia that allows you to close your eyes and forget. Fake Hell presented me some with some eclectic, angry, trippy noise rock and I ended up with a mind blowing party in my head.

VORDERMANN – FEEDING ON FIREWORKS
Rock, Metal, Post, Prog, Sludge
Stoke On Trent, UK
Self-released
After that fine, atmospheric and eclectic three track called Feeding On Flowers, the five piece from Stoke on Trent, UK named VORDERMANN returns with a follow up called Feeding on Fireworks! It follows the same strain of composition, sound color and feels like Feeding on Fireworks is the explosive celebration of everything that seems to make VORDERMANN a compelling force for the future of modern heavy music… They continue to blend sludge, doom, post rock, shoegaze, alternative rock and even pop influences with such effortless confidence, that the three tracks demand to be repeated with no end. They create a vibrant tapestry, where crushing moments of riffs bloom into shimmering atmospheres and bittersweet sour-laced vocal harmonies cut through it all with striking clarity. Feeding on Fireworks, feels like a dazzling statement of intent… Especially when one listens to Something Sacred, Something Terrible, a true celebration of transformation, intensity and limitless possibilities if one goes beyond convention… And VORDERMANN continues to do so!
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)
WEALTHY WOMEN – CHILDREN
Metal, Rock, Sludge, Doom
San Francisco, California, USA
Self-released / Prescription PR
Eight tracks and almost thirty five minutes, are filled with bursts of rage and longer, more oppressive passages. Children seems poised to turn outrage into something physical. And in an era defined by cruelty and an utterly doomed outlook on the state of society and the earth, there is always value in making a noise that refuses to look away. And that is something WEALTHY WOMEN refuse to do. This is not an album about watching America burn from some safe distance. WEALTHY WOMEN is a trio trapped inside the fire and screaming as loud as they can…
