It does not happen that often anymore. But yes, there’s an older album on this edition of the Doom Charts. Why it wasn’t discovered all those months ago, or why it suddenly has, will forever remain a mystey. The same goes for all the other aspects regarding music. A mystery. Why does a certain piece of music make you scream? Howl? Jump for yoy! Cry… And why do other songs, album or parts of music do very little for you. When you listen to albums by bands you’re not yet familiar with, there’s always something about one of them that makes you choose it over the others. It’s that special quality that grabs your attention and makes you want to come back for more. In the case of BLEEDING ANTLERS, it was the deep, clear voice of the singer, Simon Bismark, that instantly won me over. After listening to the album Songs for Praise several times, the psychedelic doom that this London band does so well revealed itself to me in all its facets: a perfect harmony and a rare balance between heaviness and finesse, all in the service of delicate and sophisticated melodies. The whole is carried by this voice, imbued with a deep sensitivity that is incredibly contagious. I get goosebumps every time I listen to it!

OBSERVERS are back with another blast of spacey, atmospheric Metal. With a hint of Doom and Stoner this is expansive instrumental Metal tinged rock music with passages of progressive and blues. Martin Kennedy can certainly play stellar guitar but it never feels like a self indulgent shred fest and there are excellent spacey synths and some strong bass licks too. This would be a great album to listen to on a clear night in the wide open with a sea of stars above.

A psychedelic fuzz orgy would be the best way to describe THE ODYSSEY CULT – VOL 3 latest but saying that doesn’t do this masterpiece justice. VOL 3 just isn’t some side project that gives you a couple of good songs and some meandering filler like so many so called Supergroup collaborations turn out. A side project by Ethan Miller (Comets on Fire, Howlin’ Rain) where VOL 1 and VOL 2 were mostly solo efforts here he is joined by former bandmate bass player Ben Flashman (Comets on Fire), drummer Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth), keyboardist Anthony Taibi (Carlton Melton), sax player Zoh Amba, and a trio of singers Brigid Dawson (Osees), Paula Frazer (Tarnation), and Inna Showalter (Magic Fig). All working together create a psychedelic fuzzed out heavy beat driven space ride full of haunting smokey vocals VOL 3 is a rare gem that my words don’t really do it justice. A definite listen to classic album that will get lots of recognition throughout the rest of the year.

18. RUST LORDS – SUFFER ETERNAL / NEW

RUST LORDS! Somewhere on a filthy scrapyard a bunch of dudes got together to gather up some doom, hardcore and thrash. They then chose one wreck that still drove, threw all of it into it, put some weight on the gaspedal, set the damn thing on fire and watched it all explode as it hit some wall at the end of the stretch of pavement. Holy hell! Suffer Eternal is twenty minutes of grating riffs, wiry bass, throat ripping vocals and sudden left turns. A moment of psychedelic swagger turning into punk velocity, or a sludge influence mutating into thrash. And grunge dragged through the gutter! Filthy by default, funny by way of lyrics, vicious through the snarl and always entirely unpredictable. Even so, these RUST LORDS never lose their sound in all that chaos. Those mutations are deliberate and aimed for. The explosion shows that genre boundaries are only there as suggestions, and the six scorched little horror stories left in its wake, the intense pleasure of watching it all burn!

This has odyssey written all over on it. This is what epic sounds like. EARTHLORE’s Within The Earth is a journey into the darker reaches of sound, where crushing doom and stoner riffs collide with the hazy colours of psych, sludge and prog. Fuzz-drenched guitars anchor the album in something earthy and weighty; immediately turning it into something legendary. While shimmering synths and drifting atmospheres open vast spaces above it, creating a whole universe for the legend to traverse. The raw, grunge-soaked vocals bring a weathered human presence to this otherwise cosmic landscape. There is space to breathe, progressive structures making each track come alive. I really enjoyed DAILY THOMPSON’s previous album, Chuparosa, thanks to its indie rock sound inspired by the ’90s. It ended up ranking very highly on my year-end list. Probably because of my inner grunge boy. With Glue, their new album, the German band has taken things even further. You could almost call it a concept album, a kind of Seek & Find game, stringing together references and tributes to the giants of the grunge golden age scene. It’s an easy game if you’re a fanboy but be warned, the band is malicious and takes great delight in misleading you. Above all, though, Glue is a true declaration of love for the early grunge scene. More than just a tribute, it’s a cry from the depths of the heart, one that never tries to hide its emotion!

Gripping from start to finish, Roadburn Chronicles makes a memorable first impression on both the ears and souls of heavy music fans.

To say Soledad y Orgullo (“Solitude and Pride” for the non-Spanish-speaking folks like myself) is just a straight-up doom album would be inaccurate and a disservice to the depth of what ARGUL are doing here. Though firmly planted in that realm, there are clear traces of proto-doom, proto-metal, and 70’s heavy rock woven throughout, giving the album a sound that feels both heavy and rooted in the past. The music has room to breathe; it’s never crowded or cumbersome, passages unfold but are never weighed down or overworked. ARGUL have created a record that embraces its influences while forging an identity all its own. What you can expect are full, layered guitars, haunting vocal melodies, and an unmistakable old-school heaviness that makes for one hell of a debut.

Four years after the amazing album, Gnosis, the Chicago’s trio is back with their ninth effort, simply called Nine. Famous for their Instrumental post-metal, the band offers us a true masterpiece. Heavier and more incisive than usual, each song is more powerful than the last. Mike Sullivan is a true riffs machine with using the loops in his work. Nine is catchy, robust, incisive and filled with epic guitar riffs. The listener would notice that the cinematic style is still a very important part in the RUSSIAN CIRCLES musical signature. Kurt Balou has engineered and mastered the disc for a third collaboration.

There’s nothing new under the sun on ZEMETRAS‘ debut album. Music-wise that is. Traditional doom with some stoner influences, drifting leisurely on a thick cloud of smoke, not driven by a huge amount of variation, but by the gripping qualities of repetition and bottom-heavy grooves. Something these Slovakians master to perfection. This is haze-inducing shit without using any type of mind-altering substances that gets an even deeper layer soul and authenticity by singing in their native tongue.

GRIMESTONE is an occult rock quartet from Nova Scotia whose sound is alternatively dominated by proto doom or heavy rock swagger. To this, the band adds well-timed surges of trippy psychedelia and heavy metal theatrics, adding color, dimension, and energy to an otherwise deliciously dark sound. GRIMESTONE‘s debut album Killing Floor will entice you with the aforementioned flavors, but you’ll ultimately be blown away by its variety. Surprises come with the unexpectedly soulful interludes amid the spooky grooves of fifth track End Times, and a sudden burst of garage punk attitude makes an appearance on the following song Liver Lake. However, final track GrimeStone is undoubtedly the standout composition. It slows things down to a mind-bending crawl before leaning increasingly hard into soaring and impassioned heavy rock jams, resulting in the most emotionally expressive track on the album. Although they seemingly came out of nowhere, GRIMESTONE proves they’re a band with staying power with Killing Floor, leaving a lasting impression with their modern spin on a variety of vintage heavy sounds.

MEAN GREEN brings the riffs, the groove and a beautifully dirty vocal that cuts through the massive, spacious sound. Castle has plenty of sludge weight, but it knows how to swing, too. The guitars feel huge and alive, the whole thing breathes, and somewhere between the crushing riffs and psychedelic haze there is always that filthy little hook pulling you back in. Slack Jaw is a perfect example of what makes this record work so damn well.

For their fourth album Esox Lucifer, Swedish stoner metallers 10,000 YEARS descend from the crushingly dense atmospheres of interstellar wastelands into the noticeably more open, protean realm of progressive sludge. Much like masters of the genre High on Fire, 10,000 YEARS delivers punishing riffs that stay nimble with the help of the intricacies of heavy metal. Coarse and biting stoner metal also shows up strongly, darting in and out of the album with electric energy. Complex and impassioned swells of intensity keep Esox Lucifer fluid and kaleidoscopic, as it plays out in an ever-shifting, cinematic manner, gripping the listener tenaciously from start to finish. However, in line with bands such as Baroness, Kylesa, and Torche, 10,000 YEARS peppers their sound with melodic movements that strain with raw emotion, adding a different kind of intensity to the mix. Esox Lucifer is undoubtedly 10,000 YEARS‘ most ambitious work to date, relentless in both weight and feeling: pure catharsis.

The mighty MASTODON are back five years since their last effort Hushed and Grim. It’s the first album since the passing of Brent Hinds after a quarter of a century in the band! Marrow Deep is their best record since Crack The Skye, which is a classic for a generation of metalheads of which I am part of. The sound is powerful and sleek, with the progish sludge sound that we love so much. Lots of keyboards and electronic sounds that gives a modern touch and epic riffs guitars are a good combination. Brann Dailor is a beast behind his drum kit and he delivers a very deep rythm section with Troy Sanders on the bass with his legendary voice. It’s the most emotionally charged album of their career and it’s a beautiful tribute to Brent! Marrow Deep belongs to the AOTY contenders list.

If you are gonna create your own genre, you better be great at it, and BESVÄRJELSEN has shown on TILL GLÖMSKAN AD OBLOVIONEM that they are. BESVÄRJELSEN answer to the Southern California Desert Rock sound is Scandinavian Forest Rock. Which has the same feel but maybe just a bit greener. The forest with its fairies and myths leans towards more airy, angelic, expressive and emotional music. TILL GLÖMSKAN AD OBLOVIONEM is still heavy, groovy and thundering like desert rock just on the other end of the scale. Give this album a chance and it will end up on many of year end top ten playlists.

Sweden’s acclaimed “Forest Rockers” Besvärjelsen unveil a no-holds-barred fusion of Psychedelic Blues, Stoner Rock and Melodic Metal, fuelled by the sultry voice of Lea Amling Alazam. An album that constantly twists and turns, bringing fabulous musicianship and songcraft to the forefront.

Sweden is a land of wild landscapes, endless forested deserts, and ancient legends that bring it all to life. The same can be said of BESVÄRJELSEN, a worthy representative of the local underground heavy rock scene, which has fully immersed itself in this environment to bring it to life in the most beautiful way through its compositions. Till Glömskan Ad Oblivionem, their third album, gave me the opportunity to venture deeper into the wooded depths of their powerful and evocative “forest rock.” Especially since the band proves here that it isn’t one to rest on its laurels, but instead constantly seeks to raise the music ever higher toward treetops. All the while never losing sight of its keen sense of melody, which takes hold of the mind like an incantation and never lets go. And it’s a real treat !
