FRIDAY FREEBIE – THE MOUNTAIN KING

THE MOUNTAIN KING – PIKE DREAMS

Another Friday Freebie… Damn! For this release the man behind the project started his own label called: Void Key Recordings. It’s the one and only THE MOUNTAIN KING! And his Pike Dreams release. Out since March, this is like a slow-moving meditation on history’s lingering scars. The expected heaviness is abandoned for instrumental soundscapes of fragile synth work, distant drone and muted guitar textures. Each track reflecting on a pivotal year not through narrative, but by spread out atmosphere.. Moments of tension do rise, but slowly dissapate with out grand climax, mirroring the weight of time and all its unresolved consequences. And while all this restraint might soften potential impact, it does reinforce the albums’s central idea: endurance over resolution. Pike Dreams invites quiet reflection… And lingering in the uncomfortable space between all you might remember, decay and what will remain…

Their own words: “Genre Description: An instrumental chimera of Dungeon Synth, Doom Metal, Drone and Post-Rock. The album serves as a sonic journey through human lore over the last 2,000 years, exploring themes of escapist rebellion and historical decay. The Mountain King operates as a strictly DIY project and has removed their entire catalog from Spotify in protest of streaming models. Pike Dreams is a 100% independent release on their own label “Void Key Recordings.”

“Pike Dreams is a purely instrumental album built as a slow cycle of reflection on human history across the last two millennia. Each track is titled after an pivotal year in the Gregorian calendar, moments of rupture whose consequences continued long after the events themselves had passed. These years are not portrayed narratively, but approached as pressure points: points where power, violence, belief and collapse left lasting traces. Musically, Pike Dreams moves from fragile, near-disintegrating synthesizer tones to dense drones and crushing doom structures. Repetition, duration and physical weight take precedence over melody or conventional song form. The album is intended to be experienced as a whole, unfolding tension over time rather than offering isolated moments. Pike Dreams was written in a period marked by simultaneous excess and exhaustion, an era of unprecedented consumption paired with widespread psychological collapse. Instead of escapism, the album turns toward endurance, decay and the long-term costs of progress. The record does not offer answers. It lingers where certainty dissolves and discomfort remains – in the space between what was promised and what endured. This is not a dream of the past. It is a reckoning with what has survived it.”
