DEER LORD – DARK MATTER PT.1
It’s Friday! And it’s time for the January Peroration Post, cause next Friday will be the first of the new month and that’s when the all new Regular February Doom Charts edition goes live. But before we get to that Peroration Post, let us wet our heavy whistle with a Freebie or two! First up is that trio from Santa Rosa, California called DEER LORD! Only a handful of codes for this doom, speed ‘n roll, lysergic heaviness called DARK MATTER PT.1… So get it quick, cause it kicks ass!
Frazer Jones said: “This is like listening to a version of Motorhead birthed in a alternative universe where speed has been replaced with strong acid as the drug of choice and tie dyed tees have preference over black leather jackets.”
Steve Rodger stated: “As someone who was mighty impressed by the bands initial release back in January 2020 I’m freakin’ delighted to add this to my Deer Lord collection… Awesome !!”

Their own words: “Deer Lord, the heavy psychedelic doom ‘n’ roll trio from Sonoma County, California, is releasing their sophomore album Dark Matter Pt. 1—six songs packed end-to-end with thunderous guitar riffs, massive sci-fi atmospheres, and powerful, grooving drums—for physical and digital release on February 3.
Dark Matter marks a significant shift in the Deer Lord sound. “The Dark Matter project is more primitive, raw, and unorthodox,” lead singer and guitarist Sheafer McOmber says. “Our original Deer Lord EP was more rock ‘n’ roll with upbeat stoner grooves. The Dark Matter songs deliver a thunderous low-end punch, deeper psychedelic rock atmosphere, and heavier guitar and bass tones.”
The album comes a few months after the Halloween 2022 release of the one-two punch of “Witches Brew” and “Psychedelic Roadkill,” the lead singles on Dark Matter Pt. 1 that perfectly exemplify Deer Lord’s penchant for ethereal atmospheric soundscapes mixed with powerful drums, massive riffs, and playful blues progressions.
The perfect soundtracks for the Halloween season, “Witches Brew” and “Psychedelic Roadkill” were both inspired by B-horror movie themes and storytelling. “‘Witches Brew’ is the story of a wanderer in the mountains who finds himself under the spell of a psychedelic witch, after kissing her LSD-covered lips at the mountain’s peak,” says McOmber. “And ‘Psychedelic Roadkill’ is the horror story of a motorcycle crash at high speed while (you guessed it) on heavy psychedelic drugs.”
The seeds for Dark Matter were planted nearly five years ago while McOmber was still learning about the recording process and paying close attention to writing songs that were simple and fun versus complex and perfect. Instead of shooting for difficult progressive rock heroics, the band strove to craft songs that young musicians would enjoy playing and seasoned riff masters would enjoy headbanging to over the jukebox.
While Dark Matter Pt. 1 comes on February 3, Dark Matter Pt. 2 will likely arrive in mid-2023. “We felt that splitting the 12 songs into two six-song releases would give a more immersive experience for these songs in our catalog,” says McOmber, “giving listeners more time to savor each note of the songs we’ve played hundreds of times together over these past couple of years.”
Both parts of Dark Matter were recorded and mixed by McOmber and drummer Ryan Alderman at Northern Buffalo Studios in Santa Rosa, CA. The project was expertly mastered by Hamish Simpson at Silly Scotsman Studios in Windsor, CA, and the album art was masterfully executed by Mirkow Gastow in Berlin, Germany.“
