One of our contributors had the audacity to ask an AI program to predict this month’s Doom Charts Top 5. It got the order wrong, but remarkably, every single one of its predicted albums made the chart. Even more unsettling, three of them landed in the actual Top 5. Scary stuff. I think it’s time to break Sarah Connor out of Pescadero State Hospital. She tried to warn us about this sort of thing. We just assumed she was talking about killer robots. Turns out she might have meant doom metal prediction algorithms…

Scary stuff indeed. There’s an ominous feeling in the air, an uneasy current, a lingering sense of dread. It seems to have become the soundtrack all year round. Ever present, impossible to ignore, yet strangely difficult to put your finger on. Zeitgeist on the Run, as the new Iron Jinn album is aptly titled. The spirit of the age itself appears rattled, looking for somewhere, anywhere, to escape to…

Luckily we can escape into the Heavy Underground. Still, beyond the Top 40 albums below, there might still be a small glimmer of hope. For if an AI can learn to understand the Doom Charts, perhaps it can also come to understand the heavy underground… And the people who pour their heart and soul into keeping this beautiful thing alive. Absolutely not for the algorithms or statistics, but because of the strange, stubborn, irrational passion that keeps it alive. All of us, all over the world, creating, writing, recording, promoting, buying records, filling venues, dubious watering holes and bars, and keeping this music alive simply because we all believe it matters. And maybe, in doing so, it can begin to make sense of us. Of humanity. Of why music matters so much to so many of us. Of why life matters. Right? And well… Because if a machine can learn the value of human life… perhaps we can, too…

YETI ON HORSEBACK plays bleak sludge with a tongue planted firmly in the cheek. Without looking too much into the lyrics I can say it’s not all depression and death, with song titles like ‘Erotic Goth Dad’ you’re bound to get a chuckle or two. Their Bandcamp genre tags list includes “dad rock depressing die fentezi meth”, which is kind of funny string of words in itself. The sound of the band is quite crushing, bottom end heavy with tons of distortion thrown in, which surprisingly DOES NOT sound like clumped up mush. Their vocals are a mix of black-ish screams and death-ish growls with some spoken bits here and there. All in all this looks to be one of my favourites of the year, and similarily to last year’s Old Year ‘No Dissent’, these ridin’ yetis came out of nowhere.

To set the scene, you have to know that Ustanak means “rebellion” or “uprising” in Croatian – ok? Well, ARSIS THESIS is the duo of brothers Nick and Jake Blevins from Houston. Their sophomore EP opens up a new path for doom metal. Faced with a dying world, they express doom without depressive fatalism, lamentations nor morbid lyricism. Instead of that, they overlay the tracks’ heaviness with a liberating rage, in an experimental way. It sounds to me like doom metal spat in Elon Musk’s face by a ’70s punk band. Ustanak is an often disconcerting, yet genius album!

After a four-year studio hiatus, Italian stoner/alternative quartet ULTRACOMBO is back with their new EP Season 3. The vibrant opening track Out of My Mind is filled with soaring melody, darting guitar tones, and off-the-charts energy, an anthemic song reminiscent of modern fuzz rockers such as Truckfighters, Carson, and Witchrider. From here, the EP takes a sharp and ominous turn, launching into a set of moody tracks sung in a mix of English and the band’s native Italian. Under a discernible cloak of darkness, these last four songs mount with tension before exploding into massive choruses, often launching directly into a towering wall of fuzz. 9. GODS & PUNKS – A SHRINE BY THE SEA / NEW!

Much like the oceans, this album is vast and deep.  The riffs are massive, the groove swells like the waves, and the rhythm section is super tight.  Vocally, it’s clean but very expressive and fits the music well.   Although the two songs obviously go together in theme/concept, the two are quite different from each other. “The Lighthouse,” is the more straightforward of the two and more riff based.  The swagger and attitude of the groovy riffs sound very confident–this band has mastered their craft. “Poseidon,” has plenty of heavy doom parts as well but it’s more atmospheric and psychedelic than the other song.  The build-up in the beginning is quite hypnotic with its methodical layers laying on top of each other as the seconds tick by.

What does it mean when a collection of rarities and leftovers is way, way better than your previous release of all new material? I don’t really know, but the fact is that ‘Foundlings‘ is miles above last year’s ‘Voyager to Voyager’ album and brings back lots of fond memories from their earlier work – my favourite DEAD MEADOW phase. Lots of variety within the realm of psychedelic rock. Sometimes contemplative, sometimes powerfull, but always with a deeper layer of pure emotion and soul-searching instrumentation in both the three covers as well as the four original compositions. ‘Foundlings‘ is amongst the best DEAD MEADOW releases to date and brings with it lots of renewed hope for the future.

When I discovered IRATA a few weeks ago, thanks to the release of their single “Altar,” which announced the upcoming release of their fifth album, HUMAN, I knew right away that it would make it onto my monthly chart. Everything I would come to love about the album was already there: the distinctive structure that is both light and heavy, driven by an energetic, unstoppable bass-and-drum groove, the vibrant, tortured yet melodic guitar riffs that fill the space without ever overwhelming it, and powerful, perfectly measured vocals brimming with emotion. On my first listen, I had the feeling I’d heard a similar band before but couldn’t quite place it. Probably because several influences that have shaped my musical world since the nineties were at play. This is certainly also because IRATA refuses to follow an overly obvious path, and because they possess all the talent needed to forge this personal, strong, and memorable identity that I’ve completely fallen for!

It’s a pleasurable jaunt of 9 tracks brilliantly taking you in and out of outstanding jams which results in a stoner’s paradise. The guitar solos within these tracks will take you away to a psychedelic bliss. As a lover of Jimi, the homage is appreciated with stupendous petal work and fuzz. So, if you have not already, it’s time to change your mode of transportation to the Bus… CANNABUS – The upper echelon of Canadian Stoner/Doom.

REZN comes on slow. For me at least. I can remember settling in for all those amazing REZN albums that came before and feeling happy and content after the first listening session. Rarely did it immediately blow me out of my seat. The same can be said for the new one. But then… When you are about to set Cycles in the Infinite Dream away for while… Zang! Suddenly, out of nowhere you are completely immersed. The collision of dreamlike beauty, with cosmic psychedelia and celestial doom, create this vast inner universe. Rob McWilliams’s soaring vocals guide the journey through waves of synth, saxophone, and lap steel, illuminating the darkness with a human glow. A truly spellbinding voyage from one of heavy music’s most transcendent forces…

1. SOLACE – FADING FAILING RUIN / NEW!

The most tenacious group of filthy, doom-bringing bastards this side of the Atlantic are back with just the fifth (albeit sprawling) full length of their 30-year career. They’ve survived line-up changes, break-ups, and the death of their original vocalist, whose presence hangs heavy over the proceedings here. But through it all, they somehow yet again have compiled a near AOTY worthy collection of nasty riffs, searing leads, and gutting songs about mankind and its wretched condition. Of all the thousands of bands I’ve listened to and the hundreds I’ve adored, SOLACE ranks in my top five all time. Fading Failing Ruin is the latest testament, in a long line of them, that shows why.

SOLACE rules and so does Fading Failing Ruin. I should say more though, so…Tommy and Justin have more riffs they have forgotten then most people have put on to tape, and some of those best ones show up on this record.  No surprise there.  What may be surprising is the amount of earworms delivered…SOLACE songs that stick in your brain and you can hum along to while still being filthy dirty? Bring It. Now, SOLACE has not gone all Cheap Trick on us, but this is by far their most melodic output, much of it driven by lead singer and primary lyricist Justin Goins, who has injected both deep lyrical themes and a sense of melody that was always lurking on The Brink (see what I did there) but is loud and clear on Fading Failing Ruin. Nothing short of a triumphant return from a much beloved band.

Every time I hear SOLACE my mind goes to why aren’t these guys more well known. They are a cornerstone in the 21st Century stoner/doom arena. The latest album showcases a band that is running a well tuned machine. Heavy riffs and raw passion laden over a Southern bluesy groove expressed with lyrics that slothen media trolls will need a dictionary to fully grasp Fading Failing Ruin is cruising full throttle.

SOLACE is kind of legendary around here – both in sound and when it comes to standing the test of time. The New Jersey-based band got their start 30 years ago and, over the years, has been artfully building upon a sturdy base of heavy metal, doom, and stoner metal.Their fifth full-length album Fading Failing Ruin immerses the listener in the sinister heft of doom combined with intricate heavy metal guitar work (think traditional doom bands such as Trouble and Reverend Bizarre), along with powerful classic metal vocals and epic storytelling. Far from over-processed, Fading Failing Ruin possesses the perfect amount of raw analog quality to its sound, making it feel even more like it was plucked directly from the golden age of 80s-era traditional doom. Even so, the album simultaneously boasts a keen cinematic soul that’s crystal clear, pulling the listener deep into its saga. In short, Fading Failing Ruin is a modern classic from a band whose creative momentum knows no bounds (and no brake pedal).
