DOOM CHARTS – APRIL 2025

It is only with the heart that one can hear rightly; what is essential is invisible to the ear…

~ probably misread quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Open your hearts and let the good stuff in! It’s Bandcamp Friday! Peruse the list, listen to as much as you can and go purchase your favorite albums! Today is the day! Below you find Forty albums, carefully listened to and voted for by the Contributors. They voted for 220 different albums this month. But these are the ones that made it to the published list. And this month, there were quite a few albums that were Number One on the individual Contritbutors lists that did not even make it to the Forty published below. Some because the Contributors in question had not realized it would not come out till somewhere in May… But why others like Bident – Blink, Fields of Locust – Nowhere Left Now To Call Home, Marble Orchard – Ruminations of Ruin, Neptunian Maximalism – Le Sacre Du Soleil Invaincu, Red Moon Architect – October Decay and SUMAC and Moor Mother – The Film were loved so hard but by so few, we will never know. Perhaps the other Contributors did not hear it yet? Chalk it up to too many great releases? So many… Well, below are forty of those many… To fill your hearts…

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

25. RITUAL KING – THE FUTUREWORKS SESSIONS / NEW!
1314 Points
Progressive, Stoner, Blues
Manchester, United Kingdom
Ripple Music

RITUAL KING‘s The Futureworks Sessions is a reformed rockist’s dream. What makes it even more incredible is that there is no live audience to feed off of. Just three musicians, in a room, letting it rip. This may be my favorite live album of all time, and I’ve listened to it more than anything else in recent memory. I am in awe…
~ Scott Spiers (CleanAndSoberStoner, Monster Riff)

24. MOUNTAIN OF MISERY – SHADES OF THE ASHES / NEW!
1340 Points
Metal, Doom, Psych, Grunge
Wrocław, Poland
Electric Witch Mountain Recordings

It had its merits, but I wasn’t immediately sold on that debut release In Roundness by MOUNTAIN OF MISERY back in 2023. Fear and trepidation might also have been a factor. What would this mean for the amazing Spaceslug? But as we all know, Spaceslug released their damn fine Out Of Water album a year ago and are going relentlessly forward. And so is this other project by Spaceslug drummer and vocalist Kamil Ziółkowski. MOUNTAIN OF MISERY’s fourth release is here, and the steady upwards march is real. An eight track grunge toned, psychedelic doom adventure that breathes atmosphere. Inhaling shoegazing moments and exhaling thunderous riffs, drawing endless vistas with charcoal and slowly tattooing its qualities into your heart…
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)

23. SWAMPLORD – WITCHLAND / NEW!
1368 Points
Doom Metal, Sludge Metal
Murom, Russia
Self-released

On their third album Witchland, aptly named sludgy stoner rockers SWAMPLORD combine the density of their debut with the dimension of their sophomore release to create a hazy, swampy sound that’s muddled with their fuzziest tone yet. The vocals remain mostly clean, but a newfound edginess at their core and their intermingling with the murkiness of the instrumentals aids in giving Witchland a bit of a grungy quality at times. Knowing this, it comes as no surprise that this album is also SWAMPLORD‘S most varied, delivering strongly on stoner/doom, sludge, and metal to create a collection of nine tracks that are sure to resonate with a wide variety of heavy music fans.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

22. QUINTANA – ETERNITY / NEW!
2172 Points
Stoner, Grunge, Heavy Rock
Ada, Ohio, USA
Boneshack Records

Blending stoner and grunge with the slightest of ease, Mississippi Bones guitarist Dusty Donley returns with the second outing from his side project QUINTANA. Heavy hitting riffs and grunge influenced vocal harmonies are the main essence throughout Eternity winning you over with their irresistible charm. For a one-man project he thrives on all instruments, there’s not a weak point anywhere to be found. In fact, QUINTANA could topple larger bands with the satisfying grooves and appealing vocal style presented on Eternity
~ Jon McGough (Stoner Rock Army, Stoner HiVe, Outlaws Of The Sun)

21. MELVINS – THUNDERBALL / NEW!
2196 Points
Rock, Sludge, Experimental
Aberdeen/Montesano, WA, USA
Ipecac Recordings

Bringing an initial heavy tone with the album opener, one can imagine the swirling pit energy in a live sequence. In true form, the band drifts and shifts, leaving the listener unsure of what is to follow. It’s been a fun tactic the MELVINS have implemented over their 40+ year period in music. Whip the fans up into an energetic fury and then swaddle them in a noise based confusion as they cry like children for “the other stuff”. Return with a new direction and change it up again. Yet, every step of the way it is uniquely the sound of the MELVINS and is always evolving.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin, Inherent Records, Mystery Pick)

20. THE MIFFS – THE MIFFS / NEW!
2244 Points
Psychedelic Rock, Surf Rock, Eastern Vibes
Melbourne,Australia
Self-released

Sometimes an album catches you completely off guard and captures your full attention, well this is the story of the self-titled album from THE MIFFS. The gifted ladies from Melbourne, Australia’s first album is a real trip! With an excellent blend of psychedelic rock featuring some nice Eastern sounds, it’s truly creative musically and lyrically. This is one hell of a sonic journey and an absolute must, and I can’t wait for more.
~ ‘The General’ (Stoner Rock Army)

19. DEMONIC DEATH JUDGE – ABSOLUTELY LAUNCHED / NEW!
2272 Points
Sludge, Stoner, Doom
Kotka, Finland
Suicide Records

Bluesy sludge and straight up rock vibes is what DDJ has to offer. On this release they’ve gone even more outside the expected restraints of what ‘plain sludge metal’ is considered to be like and gotten a really cool package out of it. According to guitarist Toni Raukola, “Absolutely Launched sounds like how John McClane looks at the end of every Die Hard movie: a winner”. Throaty vocals full of phlegh, softly buzzing chainsaw guitars backed by low end bass rumble and pummeling drumming, it’s a familiar trip laced with pretty new vistae you wont mind experiencing.
~ J. ‘Shrike’ Kolehmainen (Psychotropic Caravan, Abhorrence, Shrike’s Playlists)

18. BRASS CAMEL – CAMEL / NEW!
2650 Points
Progressive Rock
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Self-released

Those of us of a certain vintage will have lived through the Glory Days of Prog: The Crimsons, The Yeses, The Utopias etc.. and Vancouver natives BRASS CAMEL bring all of that past Glory to the table with their second release, “Camel“. A melting-pot of incredible musicianship and craft, reminiscent of Happy The Man, Kansas, Lift, Starcastle and Zazu! Impeccable!
~ Stevie Reek (Howls from The Hollows, Doomed & StonedStoner HiVe)

17. VOID KING – THE HIDDEN HYMNAL: CHAPTER 2 / NEW!
3195 Points
Doom, Sludge, Stoner Metal
Indianapolis, Indiana, USA
Argonauta Records

Never have so many styles of doom been woven together with such skill and finesse than as on VOID KING‘s “The Hidden Hymnal: Chapter 2“. Elements of epic, stoner, traditional and proto doom all can be found making their presence felt throughout this beautifully crafted opus along with essences and flavours of heavy psych, sludge and prog. The musicianship throughout this album is frankly phenomenal a superlative that could also be applied to the vocals which are a mix of old school depth and power and new school grit and growl. An outstanding album that fans of all schools of doom will be able to appreciate.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

16. SONIC DEMON – PLANET TERROR / NEW!
3392 Points
Acid Doom, Stoner Rock, Proto-Metal
Italy
Majestic Mountain Records

Get your motor running style fuzz drenched riffage, punchy hard driven rhythms and searing acidic guitar solos all decorated in clean sneery vocals that are buried so far in the mix they become almost inaudible. Yes, you’ve guessed it SONIC DEMON‘s “Planet Terror” is another of those albums emanating from Italy’s all conquering acid rock/scuzz scene, an album that rarely deviates from its set in stone fuzz’n’roll formula but is essential listening all the same.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

15. FOMIES – LIMINALITY / NEW!
3945 Points
Psych, Garage, Punk, Stoner
Vevey, Switzerland
Taxi Gauche Records

The new FOMIES album, Liminality, is some crazy psych goodness. These guys throw the kitchen sink at you, bringing some garage rock, punk, stoner, Krautrock, and all sorts of other fun stuff over the twelve tracks on their latest offering. In a perfect world this is what The Strokes second record would have sounded like.  FOMIES brings everything that band could have been on Liminality. A spaced out, fuzzed out, Velvet Underground meets the Stooges meets Hawkwind mashup and boy am I here for it.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip, Rich & Turbo’s Heavy Half Hour)

14. PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS – DEATH HILARIOUS / NEW!
4202 Points
Noise, Alternative Rock, Stoner, Metal
Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK
Rocket Recordings

UK band PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS doesn’t need a lot of introduction. They’ve been carving out their own niche in underground rock music for years now, concocting a fluent, ever-shifting brew of noise, alternative rock, stoner and metal. New album ‘Death Hilarious‘ is no exception to the rule, except for a few added bits and bops, mainly the introduction of keys that are being used in an original way. But the most surprising ‘gimmick’ is inviting famous, but overrated rapper El-P for a guest performance. Totally unlike Pigs, but it works out really well with the star delivering some of his best stuff ever. It all adds up to ‘Death Hilarious‘ arguably being the best Pigs album yet.
~ Ronny Dijksterhuis (Stoner HiVe)

13. YOJIMBO – CYCLES / NEW!
4505 Points
Stoner Metal, Stoner Rock, Psych Rock
Strasbourg, France
Blue Cat Prod

YOJIMBO is the Art of galactic stoner and psychedelic doom. Listening to Cycles you’ll find the fundamental elements of heavy rock: doomy riffs, eerie atmospheres, heavy sound, and hypnotic groove. The Strasbourg quartet stands out thanks to the songs’ non-linear structure, free-flowing guitar, and Sophie’s clear and calm voice. From the music to the stunning cover artwork, this album is an accomplished and creative work.
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T“ François (Metal Intégral)

12. MISS LAVA – UNDER A BLACK SUN / NEW!
6372 Points
Stoner Rock
Lisboa, Portugal
Small Stone Records

The longplayer “Under a Black Sun” , by Portugal’s hot-blooded psych stoner rockers MISS LAVA impresses and captivates the lover of rock sounds not with the invention of a new cartwheel, but with more intense, more in-depth textures and brilliant colors from the stuff of vintage, grunge, stoner/metal and their 20 years of adorable and sophisticated musical experience repertoire. It’s an electrifying album, with fat-juicy bluesy fuzz-riffs and warm, present vocals, over which hangs a cosmic-psychedelic note of a slight, ever-present underlying melancholy, without destroying the melodic, groovy and dynamic vibes, as well as a hint of ALICE IN CHAINS and SOUNDGARDEN. “Under a Black Sun” is hotter, more varied, more experimental and occasionally more rebellious MISS LAVA in a mesh of post/doom and stoner/sludge attitude.
~ Mel Lie (Sunday’s Heavy Tunes)

11. ORDOS – FIRE / NEW!
7543 Points
Doom, Sludge, Stoner Metal
Uppsala, Sweden
Self-released

It kind of grates that ORDOS do not get mentioned in the same breaths as the King Buffalo’s and Elder’s of this world, maybe its because ORDOS‘ music comes from a much darker and heavier place than those mentioned or maybe its just down to the fact the band have not exactly been prolific album-wise and have never quite played the self-promotion card as well as they might have. ORDOS certainly deserve to be standing on an equal footing with those bands mentioned as from day one they have hardly put a foot wrong, each album has been a marked improvement on the last which is quite an impressive feat when you consider that each album has been pretty much faultless. We will of course end this blurb telling you that “Fire” is ORDOS‘ best album to date, which it is, but we fully expect to say that about their next one too.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

10. CONAN – VIOLENCE DIMENSION / NEW!
8190 Points
Doom Metal, Extreme Metal, Sludge
United Kingdom
Heavy Psych Sounds

If we could hear the music of the Neanderthals, I’m sure it would sound like CONAN‘s. Their low-tuned, fuzzy, shouted, extreme doom metal can only find its inspiration in the primitive brain of a human species close to nature. For hundreds of thousands of years, humanity has never been able to find peace. Even today, through video games, movies, current events, the immoral massacres in Gaza, Ukraine, the Congo, etc., we are all surrounded by death and involved in the Violence Dimension. That would be the message. Anyway, this 7th opus by the British trio will delight fans of crushing riffs and primitive savagery to the highest degree.
~ Thierry “Neanderthal-T“ François (Metal Intégral)

9. EARL OF HELL – EARL OF HELL / NEW!
9030 Points
Stoner, Punk, Garage, Grunge
Edinburgh, UK
Copper Feast Records

A little bit garage punk, a little bit fuzzy stoner, a little bit grunge, a little bit post punk, a lot spooky and evil, EARL OF HELL‘s debut full-length brings the riffs long with the thrills and chills, delivered with a more-punk-than-you attitude and a not-afraid-of-the-90s vibe that jumps out of your stereo to smack you on the back of the head.  Franic enough to make you want to break stuff and scary enough to make you want to run and hide, EARL OF HELL delivers a perfect combination with their self-titled debut.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip, Rich & Turbo’s Heavy Half Hour)

8. HÅNDGEMENG – SATANIC PANIC ATTACK / NEW!
9600 Points
Doom n’ Roll, Stoner Metal
Drøbak, Norway
Ripple Music

HÅNDGEMENG has been cranking out the most brutal of heavy metal assaults since 2018, getting their start with a “pit-breaking, beer-soaked maelstrom of riffs”. The band fit quite naturally into the hardcore “motorcycle death cult” side of the stoner metal scene, but on their new album Satanic Panic Attack, HÅNDGEMENG stays true to their rebellious roots while incorporating some more melody-driven stylings into their wildly energetic sound. The result is an entire album’s worth of anthem-like tracks and tongue-in-cheek attitude that’s sure to awaken the party-loving demon within you. In a nutshell, Satanic Panic Attack is pure devilish fun.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

7. GREY CZAR – EUARTHROPODIA / NEW!
10140 Points
Progressive Rock, Heavy Rock, Metal
Salzburg, Austria
Argonauta Records

With a sprawling sound that incorporates stimulating time changes, theatrical presentation, and excellent production, GREY CZAR have set the bar extraordinarily high with the progressive rock masterpiece that is Euarthropodia. A conceptual album of a world taken over by a kingdom of insects that find themselves in a state of turmoil and decline, the album overflows with creativity and a plenitude of surprises. The narrative is explained across the nine tracks that include acoustic interludes, prog-rock flourishes, and attention-to-detail augmentations with a phenomenal lead vocal that is heightened even further with harmonies. GREY CZAR succeeds in making a gratifying listening experience with Euarthropodia and you’ll be hard pressed to find a more unique and enticing output for the first third of 2025.
~ Jon McGough (Stoner Rock Army, Stoner HiVe, Outlaws Of The Sun)

6. KOMATSU – A BREAKFAST FOR CHAMPIONS / NEW!
10978 Points
Psych, Stoner, Sludge, Heavy metal
Eindhoven, Netherlands
Heavy Psych Sounds

Now as a trio, KOMATSU releases their fifth full-length, A Breakfast For Champions. Such a gem of an album it is! Served by masters of the genre, this album offers us the perfect synthesis of everything that heavy rock represents for me: the swaying groove of psychedelic stoner, the unbridled energy of sludge, the sharp riffs of heavy metal. I can’t help but rank this album at the top of my April vote list, a serious contender to the Heavy Rock AOTY.
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T“ François (Metal Intégral)

5. LO-PAN – GET WELL SOON / NEW!
11448 Points
Hard Rock, Metal, Stoner
Columbus, Ohio, USA
Magnetic Eye Records

LO-PAN mix the heavy of hard rock and stoner metal to bring us some catchy songs to please our ears. Never too heavy or gruff and certainly never too soft or light, they do it just right. Steeped in 90s grunge and brought to the present day they rock it hard just like I like it. In another time, another place where the universe was done right they would be played on the radio and be well known to rock fans everywhere.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)

4. THE ELVEN – SOLSTICE / NEW!
16128 Points
Southern Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Barcelona, Spain
Spinda Records / Clostridium Records / Echodelick Records

THE ELVEN is a supergroup of sorts, composed of members of legendary Spanish heavy rock band Saturna as well as guitarist Issiah Mitchell from beloved Californian heavy psych outfit Earthless. Needless to say, this coming together creates something magical, but the most important thing to know about the band’s scintillating debut album Solstice is it forges its own path. While you’ll definitely hear some amazing heavy rock a la Saturna and psychedelic influences in the vein of Earthless, there are just as many pleasant surprises such as infusions of blues and heartland rock. The trail blazed here isn’t the one of least resistance by any means; each song on Solstice has a very distinct personality, a clear message, and a heart and soul, all of which are crafted with utmost care and attention to detail. This album is deeply poignant, sophisticated but universal, and is certainly one of the most beautiful things that will grace your life this year.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

3. DEAD SHRINE – CYDONIA MENSA / NEW!
17710 Points
Stoner, Psych
Hamilton, New Zealand
Astral Projection

I did not think New Zealand multi-instrumentalist Craig Williamson could top all the amazing work he has done in the past, like the classic Datura records, the killer Arc of Ascent   albums, the trippy neo-folk of his Lamp Of The Universe output, or even the first DEAD SHRINE record, The Eightfold Path. Williamson, however, does just that with the second DEAD SHRINE record, Cydonia Mensa, which takes his new project to a new cosmic level. WhereThe Eightfold Path was made up of mostly older songs and ideas from his writing with his other projects, the songs on Cydonia Mensa are all new compositions written specifically for this band, and wow does it show the continued brilliance of the creator of all of this killer music over multiple decades. The latest from DEAD SHRINE hangs with or even surpasses some of his amazing past output, cementing Williamson as an underrated genius of our time. Album of the year candidate.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip, Rich & Turbo’s Heavy Half Hour)

2. MESSA – THE SPIN / NEW!
21216 Points
Doom, Gothic Rock
Italy
Metal Blade Records

Once again, MESSA put out an AOTY contender with their 4th album ‘The Spin‘. This time, the band take their trademark ‘scarlet doom’ sound and combine it with 80’s gothic rock to brilliant effect. Sara’s vocals sound the best they’ve ever sounded, Alberto’s solos are out of this world and the rhythm section of Marco and Rocco glue the whole thing together perfectly. Riffs, blast beats, slide guitar, trumpets, proper guitar solos, incredible vocals, piano ballads – it’s all on this album and showcases why MESSA are one of the most original and exciting bands on the scene today.
~ Jonny Pirie (Hour of the Riff)

1. TEMPLE FANG – LIFTED FROM THE WIND / NEW!
28377 Points
Heavy Psych, Stoner Rock, Free Rock
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Stickman Records

Ever masters of the expansive and perpetually evolving heavy psych jam, TEMPLE FANG is back with what they consider to be their “true debut studio album”, “Lifted from the Wind“. This album showcases the band’s irrefutably organic creative process in which each track unfurls at a most natural pace while expertly utilizing cinematic but clear-cut chapters to each song. Also true to form, the overall sound has an atmospheric backbone but illustrates the more momentous acts with heart-pounding intensity; never overly heavy or coarse, but always with an authentic sense of apprehension or passion (whichever the situation calls for). Lifted from the Wind also features more of a futuristic, spacey prog rock tone, adding both a refreshing new vibe and even more intricacies, twists, and turns to TEMPLE FANG‘S labyrinth of sound.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

A spiritual trance that traps the listener in a cosmic ceremony ideal for expanding the mind. A true ritual in which the band creates the music that comes from their hearts without looking any further. Its meditative instrumental passages and occasional vocals make this album a Holy Grail for any lover of contemplative psychedelia. Music that penetrates the listener’s nerve endings, stimulating them with fascinating sensations in the form of long songs. Rock can be about energy, but it can also be a vehicle for unleashing your deepest feelings, letting them free to flutter through the world.
~ Roberto Lucas (Denpa Fuzz)

A TEMPLE FANG live experience is always a singular event. Adventurous, emotional and spiritual. It heals the soul and mends the heart. That is probably why they’ve already released quite a few of their concerts on vinyl. On their new studio album Lifted From The Wind, with new drummer Daan Wopereis in their midst they’ve managed to capture more of their live energy and serve it to you as the perfect example of how to catch lightning in a bottle. Or perhaps more like fireflies, circling inside the jar before being released into the cosmos to perform that wonderful free rock dance. For that is what Temple Fang is about, release and freedom. And their psychedelic rock, free rock searches its own way and knows, without any resistance, to find its way into your heart. With a magical feeling for subtleties and control, they manage to keep you enthralled for an hour and fifteen minutes long. Letting themselves be guided even more by the whims of the great magnet and lettings their egos disappear with every note. Just listen to that beautiful Josephine, that slow meandering start, the lyrics uttered by one of the three vocalists Dennis Duijnhouwer until the moment that his love is being sucked away by a storm. The way the whirling guitar lines ascend, not dark, but almost heavenly. You feel the pain, but also a form of serene understanding, which radiates and sounds so beautiful. Calmness and tranquility descends, like a faint summer breeze as you stroll through a flowery meadow, somewhere high in the mountains…
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)
