This next Friday Freebie is of the extra dank and heavy variety… none other than doomers EARTHBONG and their massive 2023 album, “Church Of Bong”!
Steve Howe (Outlaws Of The Sun) said: “Church Of Bong is a mighty big step up for Earthbong to take relatively speaking. Earthbong play a wide array of different sounding grooves that have an air of intelligence behind them. This is another fantastic and wonderfully entertaining release from the band and proves why they’re one of the best bands from the European Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal underground scene right now.”
JJ Koczan (The Obelisk) said: “In a word, you would call it ‘heavy.’”
Their own words:
“With two tracks and a total playtime of just under 40 minutes CHURCH OF BONG is the band’s shortest, yet most versatile offering.
In a way this album can be seen as the last part of a trilogy. A long and exhausting journey towards the place where the ultimate riff- and weed-worship takes place. The CHURCH OF BONG. The journey started with the raw and unpolished ONE EARTH ONE BONG. In the beginning, there was nothing, just one earth and one bong. But through many gatherings around the stash of the first men, a cult started, and BONG RITES were cultivated. The weedcult grew and finally evolved into a religious form. The CHURCH OF BONG was born. As the cult grew and became a religion, the songs that are crucial to worship the weed properly have changed. Their sound became thicker than smoke, their riffs became as endless as the journey towards the riff-filled CHURCH OF BONG.
Bong Aeterna, the eternal bong opens the album and musically describes the march towards the church that lays deep in the mountains and the rituals that take place inside. As the gates open and the holy mess begins, a demonic voice starts to scream: ARISE! BAPTIZED! You were baptized by the monks of the church of bong and the ritual drags you deep into a psychedelic trip that gets weirder and wilder with every passing minute (or hour?) and finally spits you out where it all started. But the journey isn’t over yet…
Dies Bongrae starts off with a wall of noise and feedback before the riff finally starts and rolls through your head forever. You’ve lost your way, but there is a voice again. It sounds pissed off but it leads you back on your path, or at least on a path. Smoke weed until you fucking die, the choir of the damned screams and that’s when you know you’re on the right way. Then the riff fades away and from the silence another riff rises and takes you with it. Away from this weary life and towards greener shores…
ARISE. BAPTIZED.
Church Of Bong was written over the course of the past three years. The final form of the album was recorded live at Dickfehler Studio / East Frisia in August 2022 by Hanno Janssen and Johnny Röhl. The cover artwork was once again made by Rino Pelli who is the artist behind all album covers of the band. The album will be released on vinyl through Black Farm Records (France) and tape through Evil Noise Recordings (Norway).
