DOOM CHARTS PERORATION – February 2024

“I don’t care if Monday’s blue
Tuesday’s grey and Wednesday too
Thursday, I don’t care about you
It’s Friday, I’m in love with the Doom Charts…”

~ (probably misheard) lyrics from The Cure

The Third Friday of the month, high time for the Doom Charts Peroration for February 2024. That show of dedication and love for more of the albums floating around the Heavy Underground. We cannot stress enough that the Doom Charts is a labor of love for the many Contributors. They all have their personal sites, zines, blogs, podcasts and radioshows to maintain. And still they manage to do the work involved with getting the monthly Doom Charts posts up. We cannot thank them enough! And once again, we want to state the obvious: there is even more out there! Go find them! Dig deep… And for starters, below are 24 albums that were all blurbed about by the Doom Charts Contributors for the February Edition of the Doom Charts. But as you know, we only post blurbs for the Top 25 and only multiple for the Number One. So all that extra dedication and labor of love can be read below. And in conclusion, we just want to spark enthuisasm among you all for everything you read below and everything else you might find… Do not hesitate to let us know if we need to check something out… You might just have discovered our new favorite album…

The following are professions of love and adoration by Doom Charts Contributors for albums they could not stop spinning. Each month, the Doom Charts critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and other sorts of heavy rock albums. The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart which is published on the First Friday of the new month, monthly. However, sometimes a love is so great, but for whatever reason the album unfortunately did not make the published Doom Charts Edition or because there were so many contributors in love with that one album, that multiple blurbs were written, and only the one got published… Well, you can peruse that love here…

ANGMODNES – ROT OF SOUL
Funeral Doom, Death,Doom
Los Angeles, California, USA
Tragedy Productions / Meuse Music Records

I was a pretty big fan of that EP and have been anxious to see what they could do with a full-length. What they did is released a very accomplished 55-minute dirge consisting of five heavy and depressing, but enthralling, epic songs. “Rot of Soul” is an apt name for the album. The atmosphere reeks of a complete loss of hope, down to the very rotting of the soul just before it falls away to nothingness. However, with that being said, the overall style of the album isn’t necessarily suffocating, at least not in the traditional sense. The songs play across huge expanses of derelict sonic fields and contain a lot of details and massive moments. In that essence, the songs are free flowing and open as far as structure goes. But the music? The vocals? The atmosphere? Downtrodden to the core. “Beneath” is immediately soul crushing. The chants and clean vocals are eerie and reach a chilling zenith when the absolute crushing waves of distortion laden hit like being suffocated with a lead blanket. The growls are harrowing and among the best I’ve heard in some time. The lead guitar lays down funeral-like melodies on top, capping another layer upon this pile of lost souls. And how about the clean vocals? Anguished, lost….their own epic poem of tragedy among these sordid musical dirges.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

BARATRO – THE SWEET SMELL OF UNREST
Noise rock, Post-Hardcore
Milano, Italy
Improved Sequence

This album rolls out like a nitrous fueled steam roller. There is nothing standing in its way that will not be crushed. BARATRO sludge drenched noise rock is the perfect pallet for the vocals as they scream out with anger and fury. Meanwhile, every brick in the building seems to turn to dust before your very eyes. Angst, destruction and absolutely on fire. Big sound, big fun.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)

BIG SCENIC NOWHERE – THE WAYDOWN
Heavy Rock, Progressive, Stoner, Desert, Psych
California, USA
Heavy Psych Sounds

This album begins with a feeling of adventure. A story that is unfolding before your very ears. Hinting at desert rock and psychedelia, the clean vocals soar over well-crafted riffs that walk upon barren lands and soar through blue skies. That tends to carry on through most of the album even though the serenity is briefly shattered with a sudden shift. The mood breaks apart and we begin to hear a mix of punk rock and prog fused together. Apart from that moment, there is a clear interpretation of stoner vibes through the remaining album sequence. Very elegant and Floyd-esq at times.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)

BIG SCENIC NOWHERE is a desert/stoner/doom/psych supergroup that includes the two hardest working men in the business today, Tony Reed (Mos Generator, Hot Spring Water, Stone Axe, lots more) and Bob Balch (Fu Manchu and a guest on pretty much every album these days) along with two members of the excellent desert/psych instrumental band Yawning Man (Gary Arce and Bill Stinson). But BIG SCENIC NOWHERE is not some one-off side project but one of the best bands that exist today, period. The playing is unmatched, the vibe is on point for what they are delivering, and the songs and the production are perfect to my ears. Even the Hall & is perfect in the context of the rest of the record, with Tony Reed pulling off his Blue-eyed soul impersonation, even the high parts. The Waydown is seven flawless tracks that expands on the Yawning Man with words and double guitar action of their last brilliant album to create what will undoubtedly be in discussion all year in the best of the best category.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

BOKASSA – ALL OUT OF DREAMS
Stoner, Hardcore, Hardrock
Trondheim, Norway
Indie Recordings

It’s wonderful what a bombastic, fat production the Norwegians present here. There’s a lot of rocking here and the new BOKASSA album surprises with less stoner, but with a lot more power and crisp riffs. Whether mid-tempo ‘Straight Edgelord’ or up-tempo ‘Garden Of Heathen’ (including a guest appearance by NYHC legend Lou Koller), the trio crushes everything and has some good catchy tunes to boot. Anyone who likes slightly punky and hardcore rock will be well served here and as already mentioned at the beginning, the production literally kills you.
~ Tom Schmahl (Rock Circuz)

CHELSEA WOLFE – SHE REACHES OUT TO SHE REACHES OUT TO SHE
Experimental, Doom Metal, Drone, Rock
California, USA
Loma Vista

CHELSEA WOLFE lives in a dark cave with bats and ravens for family and friends – this is a fact. Or it is in my mind! How else does she produce albums of dark menace and beauty with the doom metal, drone, neofolk and electronica if she has seen sunlight. Always gloomy and ethereal, her work can be challenging to happy, shiny people. Gone are some of the guitars and shrieks of earlier works – this owes more to Massive Attack than Thou. Fear not though, you will still want to turn out the lights and use as a soundtrack to your favourite slasher film.
~ Tony Maim (Black Insect LaughterStoner HiVe)

CROSSROAD – FUNERAL PATH
Doom, Glorious Doom
Poland
Nine Records

Expanding out from the pure Pentagram worship of their 2021 demo, CROSSROAD stretch into a full-fledged traditional doom powerhouse on their Nine Records’ debut full length, Funeral Path. With vocals evoking the Teutonic and Scandinavian greats of the genre, CROSSROAD will leave you Bewitched and have you Crushing the Insects in no time. One of the best releases of the new year so far, Funeral Path brings hope for the Music of Despair in 2024 and for the evolution of a new voice in traditional doom. So turn those crosses upside down and get your heads banging. Hail!
~ Ben Bellum (The Greatest Thing You’ve Never Heard)

CROWSKIN / BAD LUCK RIDES ON WHEELS SPLIT VERSTUMMT / MONOCELESTIAL CHORDS
Sludge, Doom, Post-Metal
Germany
Exile of Mainstream

The split LP is one of my favorite ways to learn about new artists. Here we find CROWSKIN delivering three raw and gut-wrenching tracks of brutality upon our ears. Where it may start with an up-tempo style, they change pace and continue slower and slower with a meter of pulverizing, gravel-throated classic sludge-soaked doom. Stylistically, it takes me back to a vintage era of these genres. BAD LUCK RIDES ON WHEELS follow with a single track that cautiously develops through an experimental ambience into a dark atmosphere and frigid direction that would be welcome in a post-punk discussion. As the track evolves, the tone becomes bigger, gloomier and is subjoined with a low, guttural vocal, taking us throughout the doom-laden end.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)

DEADPEACH – THE COSMIC HAZE AND THE HUMAN RACE
Psychedelic, Fuzz, Stoner
Rimini, Italy
Self-released

THE COSMIC HAZE AND THE HUMAN RACE‘, reflects the evolution of the band’s sound and its brilliant compositional ability throughout this period of silence. Masterful in their composition, they create a fascinating combination of skillfully mixed genres. Their intricate melodies and the psychotropic character of their songs are adorned with the forcefulness of powerful riffs soaked in narcotic fuzz, making them irresistible. Thus they achieve a cosmic haze with which to trap the listener on an expansive journey in which heavy-psych vibrations take center stage. But if something characterizes the trio, it is their ability to intertwine their melodies, giving them the elements you would expect from a Stoner band. Captivating in their proposal, DEADPEACH know how to conquer the listener, whether with their narcotic psychedelia, with their riffs soaked in fuzz, or with raw harmonies more typical of the pioneers of the seventies.
~ Roberto Lucas (Denpa Fuzz)

The Italian psych/stoner/doom scene is as strong as any scene in the world. Bands are constantly popping up from Italy that kick all sorts of ass, with a lot of those bands being more doom, but the other adjacent genres are well represented too, including by DEADPEACH, who are more heavy psych rock than anything else and who are here to bring us some of that goodness on their latest release, The Cosmic Haze and the Human Race. Some fuzzy psych rock with some stoner leanings that will certainly be appealing to most folks who like that kind of rock in their musical daily dose. Heavy riffs and lots of fuzz. What more could you ask for? DEADPEACH aren’t breaking any new ground here, but their fourth album is a solid release that is worth your time if you like fuzzy stoner riffage and 60s inspired psych rock.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

With “THE COSMIC HAZE AND THE HUMAN RACE”, DEADPEACH provides us with what is, in effect, a good trip. In the same manner as an artist paints with a brush, DEADPEACH masterfully utilizes music and song to paint dazzling sonic landscapes, dreams, moods, and some pretty rad situations. The pace of the album does a great job of moving from peaceful and atmospheric to altogether rollicking and adventurous, never leaving the listener bored. Even though it’s the amazing instrumentals that are at the forefront of this album, the hypnotic vocals are the icing on the cake, reminding me of a comforting subconscious voice that checks in every once in a while to make sure you’re still enjoying the ride. And you will be, trust me.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

DESPERATION ECLIPSE – INNER RUIN
Funeral, Death, Doom
Germany
Self-released

Divine dystopian dissonance of the highest order. German sludge dirges, or as they define it, Funeral Doom Death Metal, that creeps along with massive and oppressively sounding hymns. With 15 minutes per track, it definitely sets the tone for one’s impending doom. FFO Sea Of Bones, Asunder & a slowed down Phobocosm.
~ Eric Crowe (Doomsayer Records / Halo Of The Goat Radio)

DISASTROID – GARDEN CREATURES
Heavy Rock
San Francisco, California
Heavy Psych Sounds

Loading us up for a heavy rock and roll journey, DISASTROID are willing to push to the edges of a grunge era sound and dig into concepts that become their very own with a few touches of math-rock mixing with stoner vibes. Not sure how to do math in between bong rips? Give this record a listen and find out how it is done! There is a bit of a psychedelic trip going on in the process anyway. Very tight, moderate tempos and a touch of darkness that wraps it all together nicely.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)

San Francisco, California’s DISASTROID brings the dark and heavy, blending stoner and grunge along with some bleak atmosphere to create some excellent heavy rock. On their latest record, Garden Creatures, their sixth album, the band continues with this skill set, bringing grunge covered riffs and a dark rock vibe, blending the 90s Seattle sound with California stoner almost to perfection. I hear a whole lot of Skin Yard/Gruntruck vibes (I hear early Nirvana, Mudhoney, My Sister’s Machine, and Soundgarden bits too) on the eight songs on Garden Creatures, which is a wonderful thing. Don’t let the comparisons and the gunge worship fool you. While you can tell what these guy’s record collections look like, DISASTROID put their spin on this classic genre, creating their own little niche in the dark stoner grunge world.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

GUILTLESS – THORNS
Sludge, Doom
United States
Neurot

GUILTLESS is unapologetic about their passion for off-grid tempos and rhythms. Leaning at times on a union of post-hardcore and industrial tones, the band finds a strength in the forecast of humanity’s demise. There is a sandpaper grit to the vocal style, precision attack to the musical output and a devastating, destructive arc to the delivery of the drums that are pushing the boundaries of tradition from start to finish.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)

HYPOXIA – DEFIANCE
Death Metal
New York
Selfmadegod Records

Looking for a fresh touch of unforgiving death metal in your life? Let the merciless hymns of HYPOXIA dirty your soul. There are times the band will slow down to remind you exactly how heavy these riffs are but will quickly get back to the business at hand. This is traditional death metal, cookie monster style vocals and abusive blast beats from the drums. Chalk another solid ripper on the board for the death metal enthusiasts. This record is pulverizing!
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)

MAYA SHENFELD – UNDER THE SUN
Ambient, Electronic
Berlin, Germany
Thrill Jockey

This is certainly off brand for a Doom Charts submission but so many of the heavy music artists we enjoy in the world dabble with ambient transitions and psychedelic landscapes. It seems fitting we should occasionally report on these elements when they touch our hearts. Under the Sun is a beautiful sonic landscape that slowly breathes, swells, and seduces our ears. The dramatic landscape remains at a minimum to remind us that soft whispers and slow, non-traditional soundscapes can be as powerful at resetting our psyche as the loud amps that tend to vibrate our bodies.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)

THE OBSESSED – GILDED SORROW
Stoner, Doom
Washington, D.C.
Ripple Music

Wino is back, and he is pissed, exactly how we want him, and he is screaming (and riffing, so much riffing) into the void with his best-known band, THE OBSESSED, who are unleashed a new record for the first time since 2017, Gilded Sorrow. THE OBSESSED discography is untouchable, so to say in 2024 Wino and this version of the band have released what is up there with their best work may sound crazy, but it is true. Wino sounds great, the guitar work is outstanding, and delivered what is the band’s most modern sounding, but never overproduced, record. What we have here is the perfect combination of Wino’s brilliance, the right band for him at this point in his career, production that could not be more spot on, and the backing of the number one record label in stoner/doom today. Wino rules, THE OBSESSED rules, and Gilded Sorrow rules.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

PONTE DEL DIAVOLO – FIRE BLADES FROM THE TOMB
Doom, Black Metal, Post-Punk
Turin, Italy
Season of Mist

As the album launches with a full throttle, blackened assault, the listener prepares for war. Then the vocals appear with a punk rock venom. Before we realize it, the tempo and tone have again shifted to slower, chant like, call and response incantations. Cleansed by the darkened shadows of doom and post-punk, PONTE DEL DIAVOLO has been given the gift. In a time that feels difficult to deliver an original take on these multiple genres, they have managed to carve their unique craft directly from the heart of them all.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)

ROPE TRICK – RED TIDE
Rock, Psych, Punk, Stoner, Free
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
Self-released

Two long winding, swirling, rhythm based, jazz influenced investigations of the tribalistic and ritualistic nature of desert rock. It has a sort of, spontaneous and improvisational atmosphere to it, which of course suits the two experimental ROPE TRICK musicians you might know from Queen Elephantine well. Especially the more ‘Desert Sessions’ styled second track Neptune, has that feeling, and will immediately strike a chord with those in love with the fantastic Rancho De La Luna studio series. But Neptune or first track Crescent wasn’t recorded in the desert but at Red Planet Studios, Philadelphia. And this was no improv cut to tape recording session, but two carefully, over the course of five years, crafted tracks. Which means, every single part of these two tracks is exactly where it needs to be. There are only two tracks on Red Tide, but they both have this carefree sonic explosion of guitar freaking and ever moving percussion going that is unrivalled in its uproarious and encouraging quality. It will push you to let loose, to let fly and to go with the flow of the Red Tide
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)

SÁBILA – VOZ ANCESTRAL
Metal, Stoner, Sludge, Doom
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Self-released

Picture this, on a sun bleached Caribbean island, only a few yards from the beach, besides a tiny shack made of palm fronds, tin scraps and besides a hand painted sign saying ‘Coco Friyo’ a quartet might be delivering High On Fire like heaviness. Straight from San Juan, Puerto Rico comes SÁBILA, a four-piece with their debut two-track serving called Voz Ancestral. Sludgy stonerrock, doom metal and touches of psychedelia. Gutteral vocals howling out Spanish lyrics and filling the humid atmosphere with dread and something otherworldly. And that eerie energy, turns their sound into a righteous hurricane. Two tracks, that roar across the beach, the ocean, the world and straight through your heart. SÁBILA, is good for the soul!
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)

SHADES OF DEEP WATER – COLD HEART
Funeral, Death, Doom, Melodic Death Doom
Finland
Self-released

In the tried and true but never boring Finnish tradition, these songs are as depressing as deep winter and twice as cold as ice. Funereal in nature, the dismal atmosphere is brought to life by deep, somber guitar tones and melodies. “Cold Heart” embraces the project’s style like never before, diving deep into the frigid waters offered by the five songs and forty minute runtime. The aforementioned melody isn’t upbeat or uplifting—this isn’t your Gothenburg style of melody. The ones contained within these dirges are dismal and strikingly forlorn. They crash against the wall of riffs, both blended seamlessly within the songs yet also very telling of their own journey. I find the album to be very smartly paced as well. There isn’t anything wrong with getting to the point and this album does a great job in grabbing me from the very first second. As I was hooked and reeled in, the songs began to unfurl itself like a winter sun in the dawn hours revealing its nuances and many details.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM – OF THE LAST HUMAN BEING
Avantgarde, Progressive, RIO
Oakland, CA, USA
Self-released

The Greatest Resurrection of All-Time! Nils Frykdahl and his Experimental troupe roll back the years and deliver something truly special! A dazzling, extraordinary melee of Invention which runs the gamut of genres through Avantgarde, RIO and beyond, with something new to focus on with every listen. Impeccable musicianship and cohesion throughout!
~ Stevie Reek (Howls from The Hollows, Doomed&StonedStoner HiVe)

SPECTRAL VOICE – SPARAGMOS
Death Metal, Death Doom
Colorado, USA
Dark Descent Records

Lamentation and exaltation are the key words for this monolithic release. Death/Doom outfit from Colorado, brings the deep pitted anguish of Funeral Doom with the savagery of Death Metal and flows so seamlessly between the two. The darkened passages are infused with perfectly executed blasts, but never taking away from overall dread and hopefulness for an end to rapidly take hold. FFO: Portal, Morgion & Aarsland.
~ Eric Crowe (Doomsayer Records / Halo Of The Goat Radio)

STYGIAN CROWN – FUNERAL FOR A KING
Doom
Los Angeles, California, USA
Cruz Del Sur Music

In 2020 California doomsters STYGIAN CROWN dropped their debut self-titled release to much excitement in the metal world. The riffs, the unique vocal stylings, and the ode to classic epic doom generated quite the buzz in that community. The band is now back after a four-year hiatus with Funeral For A King, which provides an even more epic doom journey as this is quite a step forward for the relatively young (as a band, not in age) and is a killer lesson in doom. Their Candlemass meets My Dying Bride meets Iron Maiden will please both the doomsters and traditional metal fans alike. Great guitar work and another outstanding vocal performance takes the band to the next level, and let’s all send positive vibes to their drummer Rhett who is recovering from a heart attack that happened right around with Funeral For A King Dropped.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

I reviewed their debut album and gave it high praise and “Funeral For A King” is going to get even more. This is the next logical step for the band and they have successfully bypassed the dreaded sophomore slump and released an album that is as good, if not better, than their strong debut. The album is a little shorter but it makes for tight songwriting that uses every available second. Each song is full, exciting, and contains exactly what it needs. The guitar tone is fantastic—crisp and clear but still heavy as a really heavy thing. The bass exceeds much in the same way and, combined with the drums, makes for a very strong rhythm section. Nothing will break their foundation. The production is IMMENSE. It is loud and vibrant–every instrument hits hard and has a very full, live feel to it. Of course, Melissa’s vocals are a tour-de-force on their own. Hands down, she is one of the best vocalists in modern doom right now.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

THORNDALE – LIGHTNING SPAWN
Stoner, Metal
Haarlem, Netherlands
Self-released

If you are in the market for a quick blast of straight-ahead stoner rock check out the new and first full length from Dutch band THORNDALE, Lightning Spawn. Clocking in at just over 28 minutes, the LP versus EP discussion is real, but what is not up for debate is the high quality of the six tracks on Lightning Spawn that will surely be enjoyed by fans who like this sort of stuff. THORNDALE gets it, and their debut full length is a workshop in killer, straight-ahead stoner rock goodness.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

TSO – HELLCARE
Alt, Noise Rock
Trieste, Italy
Self-released

TSO delivers a solid album that fans of the 90’s music era will feel right at home with. There are raw elements of noise rock and a clean vocal that feels like alternative MTV listeners would have been tripping over themselves to get to know. Blend that with a touch of grunge. It’s not a clone of any specific thing. More of a melting of the decade into their sound. With a dark underbelly, it sets the tone for a terrific listen.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)

WITCHORIOUS – WITCHORIOUS
Doom metal, Heavy stoner
Ile-de-France, France
Argonauta Records

WITCHORIOUS’ music can be called True Doom Metal : dark groove, occult lyrics, slow or mid-tempi, raw heavy riffs, no romance and a totally antifestive spirit. A big advantage of the band is having two singers, a man and a woman. This helps to break boredom, to revive the listener’s attention, to enrich the harmonies and to vary the moods. Notice that it is sometimes difficult not to think of Ozzy when hearing the singer, that same acidic and addictive voice. Furthermore, songs are built on strong architectures which avoid cliché. This debut album is a so enjoyable opus that I am already long to listen to their sophomore.
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T“ François (Metal Intégral)

WITCHORIOUS debut album is a wicked display of “painful doom”. Riff heavy, melodic stoner sludge, with well structured song craft that avoids the stereotypical cliches in the sub genre.
~ Bucky Brown (The Ripple Effect)
