DOOM CHARTS – FEBRUARY 2024

Maybe the one day will be like that one day listening to the Doom Charts. Maybe it will last forever.

~ David (probably misheard quote from the 2001 movie A.I.)

The Doom Charts are merely a guide. A monthly chart based upon votes from many heavy music addicts from the Heavy Underground that take it upon themselves to go out and discover and write about as much new great music as they can. There is no algorithm involved, no AI, nothing artificial. Just pure love and dedication to the good stuff. I guess we are lucky, you know, you and me and that we dwell in the Heavy Underground. We do not need suggestions or predictions based upon what we listened before from some streaming service. We just go out and visit the blogs, zines, sites and listen to the podcasts spreading the love about all that good stuff. And then… We check it out ourselves. And possibly fall as madly in love with the album as the one suggesting it. Sometimes, it’s the other way around and we tip one of the many zines about a certain band. We are lucky. We listen to full albums. Do you think those streaming services will suggest you listening to SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM? I highly doubt it… They only suggest three-minute easy digestible bite-sized chunks.

Below are once again forty amazing albums. Full albums. We live in a time of a thriving heavy music community with so many great releases. And that is perhaps, the only minor danger here. Because there is so much, (239 albums received votes this month!) you might not stay with a certain album long enough. If you have time, please do. See it as that first vinyl record you ever bought or that cd, which you just played over and over, until those favorites songs from the first listening session are no longer your favorites and the ones you did not immediately appreciate are. If you don’t have time, there is a Spotify-playlist, (ho ho ho, the irony, the irony) at the bottom with the favorite tracks of the forty full albums below, chosen by the people voting for them. And all the tracks from the different Doom Charts editions that came before… Indeed, it’s an exceedingly long playlist. So be warned, it’s already over 200 hours of amazing heavy tracks… Single tracks. Which will lead you to more than 2000 heavy albums! Full albums… So, in the end, listening to all of it, might last forever…

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

25. LOCOMOTIVA ELÉTRICA – OS ANIMAIS QUE NOS HABITAM / NEW!
1341 Points
Progressive Rock, Instrumental, Psychedelic, Stoner Rock
Venacio Aires, Brazil
Self-released

Instrumental albums don’t often crack the top 25. Sure the bigger names will but for a less known band to is rare which means when it does you know it’s really good. I usually talk about the guitar being an integral part of any good rock music, and it’s simply stellar here but the keyboards really make this special. The album maintains a heavy sound throughout while slipping into melodies that are very pleasing at the same time. The first time I heard this my reaction was “Wow! Wtf is this? This is sooooo good.”
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)

24. SPIRAL GURU – SILENCED VOICES / NEW!
1460 Points
Progressive Stoner, Heavy Psych, Space Rock, Indie Rock
Piracicaba, Brazil
Abraxas Records

SPIRAL GURU is back with another EP of excellent stoner/psych rock. As good as the music is it is the beautiful vocals that push this over the top. If you’re familiar with the band you’ll know what to expect and will not be disappointed. If you aren’t familiar with them and are reading this that needs to be corrected right now. I’m pretty confident that you will not be disappointed either. This belongs in every stoner/psych fan’s collection. I’d love to see this band live.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)

23. MÆNTIS – TO BECOME KING / NEW!
1560 Points
Doom Metal, Psychedelic Rock, Sludge
Hildesheim, Germany
Grazil Records

After several years of quiet contemplation MÆNTIS has returned to the scene with their second album TO BECOME KING! Although their debut record was all instrumental, this time around the band has incorporated a variety of vocal styles as well as a ton of ethereal elements. The result is speaker-wrecking heavy riffs interwoven with transcendent, otherworldly melodies that will lead you into a trippy, celestial haze!
~ Brandon Collins (Morbid And Miserable Records)

22. LAST QUARTER – FOR THE HIVE / NEW!
1672 Points
Stoner rock, Doom metal, Hard rock, Heavy blues
Paris, France
Self-released

For The Hive by LAST QUARTER was a real big surprise for me. For those who know their debut EP, this album has progressed significantly. It’s stoner/doom that includes blues influences, fuzzy riffs, solid rock solos, a gifted vocalist, an epic touch and even a final track built on a funky bass line. The album continues to tell this sci-fi story based on the single Space Bee Keeper (2021). The beginning is very dark while the ending seems to bring a light of hope. Listening to For The Hive means diving into a story and accepting to be regularly surprised and moved.
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T“ François (Metal Intégral)

21. EARTHEN – UNRELENTING / NEW!
1680 Points
Doom Metal, Heavy Metal
San Antonio, Texas, USA
Self-released

The album’s title is absolutely what this album is about. The band’s nature is more of an old school doom/metal sound so it isn’t very aggressive. However, it is very, very, very heavy. This band is a three piece and they are more dense and weighty than bands with double the members. However, the riffs are what makes the album so unrelenting. A band can be heavy without actual riffs. This band has actual, true to form riffs and they just don’t stop. The rhythm section is also extremely potent—the bass is fuzzed out to the extreme and the drums are crisp and ultra tight. They are a powerhouse of a trio and really fill up the sound—-not one second on this album is wasted. Some of my favorite moments across the album happen when Raul plays a solo. Because he is the lone guitarist, vocalist Aaron backs him up with tremendous bass. These moments are monumental and prove that not every band needs a second guitarist. But the band is at their best when they deliver all out jam sessions—like a stampede of ravenous raptors going in for the kill with never-tiring attacks.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

20. SCHUBMODUL – LOST IN KELP FOREST / NEW!
1692 Points
Instrumental, Progressive, Stoner, Space
Bochum, Germany
Tonzonen Records

Lost in Kelp Forest is SCHUBMODUL’s second album and my first exposure to them. I’ve got them pegged as a blend of post metal and stoner, but that’s really doesn’t do them justice. They’re instrumental, but they use spoken word samples (to great effect like on We Lost the Sea’s Departure Songs). They’re heavy, but not aggressive. They’re a trio, but their sound is layered and nuanced. I’d say that Lost in Kelp Forest really does bring the feeling of being submerged underwater, but it’s not suffocating; it’s freeing. SCHUBMODUL make the contradictions work for them and they’ve produced a very special record in the process.
~ Ben Bellum (The Greatest Thing You’ve Never Heard)

19. BIRDS OF VALE – LIMBO / NEW!
2268 Points
Alt-Metal, Heavy Blues, Stoner Rock
Athens, Greece
Bitter Tea Records

BIRDS OF VALE boast a singer who can channel elements of both Chris Cornell and Robert Plant in his vocal delivery, a guitarist who does Jimmy Page better than Jimmy Page does Jimmy Page these days and a rhythm section tighter than a hug from an amorous anaconda. Those who thought heavy blues was a thing of the past NEED to hear this album!
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

18. GRIN – HUSH / NEW!
2464 Points
Doom Metal, Sludge Metal, Psych Metal, Stoner Metal
Berlin, Germany
The Lasting Dose Records

HUSH is the fourth album from Psych Doom/Sludge Metal Duo GRIN who take a more expansive and primal approach with their music. The band made up of husband and wife team Jan and Sabine Oberg offer sixteen tracks where the album can be brutally primal one moment and then change into a more uplifting style of Psychedelic Doom/Stoner Metal. GRIN offers an array of different vocal styles with harsh growls and ethereal clean vocals that suit the instrumental passages the mood calls for. GRIN deliver powerful sludgy guitars and intense Cosmic drum beats that are constantly a barrage of Psychedelic heaviness that transforms into a cinematic style of Doomgaze or Atmospheric Sludge movements with epic production values allowing this to become GRIN‘s most daring and brilliantly creative record to date.
~ Steve Howe (Outlaws of the Sun)

17. DEAD RUNES – RAIDHO / NEW!
3468 Points
Hard Rock, Stoner Rock, Alt-Metal, Prog
Nashville, Tennessee, USA
Self-released

DEAD RUNES prove with “Raidho” that not everything coming out of Nashville comes covered in rhinestones and tells stories of heartbreak and horses, DEAD RUNES music draws from the full gamut of rock with elements of prog, hard rock and even doom all finding a place in their grooves to call home.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

16. SHROOM EATER – GOD OF THE GAPS / NEW!
3774 Points
Stoner, Doom
Indonesia
Self-released

Bogor – based Stoner/Doom band SHROOM EATER foist their third release “God of The Gaps” on our ears and very welcome it is too! 10 low-end, fuzzed-up and festering tracks ranging from the proto-doom of “Bending The Lights” through the crawling Sabbath-worship of “Illumination Divers” to the eerie atmospherics of “For the Praiseworthy” this is an album that delivers Quality tunage all the way through.
~ Stevie Reek (Howls from The Hollows, Doomed&StonedStoner HiVe)

15. RHINO – HUMAN FARM / NEW!
3876 Points
Stoner Rock, Heavy Psych
Catania, Italy
Argonauta Records

Does RHINO‘s Sicilian stoner find its power in the forges of Vulcan – I mean, in the eruptions of Mount Etna? Nobody knows but everyone can hear that Human Farm is a powerful opus. The crushing strings forge fuzzy riffs while lighter fingers sculpt psychedelic jewels for the muses. Some parts are designed as unstoppable forces, others allow breathing, and others are hypnotizing, so the whole is well balanced. This sophomore full-length album by RHINO is a new desert rock trophy in the increasingly recognized catalog of Argonauta Records. Weird post scriptum – When I was listening to Padrock (track #7), I told myself that I had already heard this voice somewhere, but where? When? Suddenly, I remembered it was Dog Door, this strange SPARKLEHORSE’s song featuring Tom Waits.
~ Thierry “I want a little dog“ François (Metal Intégral)

14. DISASTROID – GARDEN CREATURES / NEW!
4284 Points
Sludge, Grunge, Stoner Rock
San Francisco, California
Heavy Psych Sounds

Grunge infused sludge as delivered by DISASTROID is exactly what it sounds like: A grungy creature with stoner rock influences that spends a good portion of its time trudging through some viscous swamp water. This slows it down, muddles it, makes it strain, even makes it a little angry at times. However, it always comes out on the other side, into clearer, brighter waters. Nod along, get lost in a daydream, sing your lungs out, or jump in the pit; it’s all fair game with “GARDEN CREATURES”.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

13. TROY THE BAND – CATACLYSM / NEW!
4774 Points
Stoner Metal, Heavy Psych
London, UK
Bonebag Records

TROY THE BAND‘s “Cataclysm” manages to create a dark, psychedelic sludge while still remaining incredibly infectious. The album feels familiar and comforting at times, but takes you on some surprising new trips as well. There’s something about it that just keeps getting better each time you listen.
~ Ryan Foster (Slightly Fuzzed)

12. GRAVITY WELL – NEGATIVE SPACE / NEW!
5066 Points
Heavy Psych, Doom, Space Rock
Belfast, Northern Ireland
Self-released

Floaty ethereal vocals fronting atmospheric doom edged heavy psych/space rock that is only just anchored to earth by its low grumbling bass lines and tight thundering drumming, there is nothing negative about the space that this band occupy.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

11. KITSA – DEAD BY DAWN / NEW!
5502 Points
Stoner
Port Orchard, Washington
Self-released

The surprise release of the month (the year?) has to be the killer stoner rock delivered from KITSA, who has gone from unknown (to me at least) to having a strong album of the year candidate. Produced by Tony Reed, as in “he who whatever he is involved with rocks” Tony Reed, the eight tracks on KITSA‘s debut Dead By Dawn are both heavy and catchy, and their everyman lyrics are heartfelt and real. These guys are the Journeymen they sing about. They know the title character in She intimately. They have had the shit roll down hill right at them as the song says. The production on the album is spot on (thanks again, Tony) and you will find yourself having a new favorite song after every listen. If there was ever an album I wanted to be longer than it’s 33 minutes it would be Dead By Dawn. Excellent, straight ahead, perfectly executed, heavy rock that I can’t imagine readers of this site not loving, because I know I can’t turn it off.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

10. EMERGENCY RULE – THE KING OF ITHACA / NEW!
5712 Points
Stoner, Southern Rock
Australia
Self-released

Chunky riffs, whiskey-soaked Southern Rock swagger, hints of COC/Down/Pantera, great songwriting, and expert playing, The King Of Ithaca, the new one from Australia’s EMERGENCY RULE, is next level awesome. Did I mention the riffs?  Australia has done it again, as EMERGENCY RULE is right up there with all the other outstanding bands coming from the already amazing scene.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

9. CRANEIUM – POINT OF NO RETURN / NEW!
6112 Points
Stoner, Psych
Turku, Finland
The Sign Records

Point Of No Return is the fourth album from Finnish psych/desert rock band CRANEIUM and continues the trend of the band delivering the goods every time they put something out. This time we have six soundscapes that lean more on the psychedelic side of things with some of that desert rock goodness, and even post rock leanings.  Regardless of what you label it, Point Of No Return is an excellent outing, with sprawling guitars, outstanding layered vocals, melody, and atmosphere, but still able to deliver a crunch.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

8. SAMSARA JOYRIDE – THE SUBTLE & THE DENSE / NEW!
7619 Points
Blues, Fuzz, Psychedelic, Stoner
Vienna – Austria
Tonzonen Records

The band was born exploring the swampy sounds of groups like ALL THEM WITCHES, on this occasion, without giving up that hallmark, we find more elaborate tracks, with a greater point of heaviness, and somewhat more complex structures that maintain the balance between density and subtlety. But the band’s genes are still intact, and their psychedelic blues is joined by heavy-psych elements with rugged riffs, as well as careful and captivating vocal melodies. These shamanic songs advance, becoming richer with greater forcefulness and perfectly structured harmonies to appear to the listener as a true delight for the ears. In the album, apart from these differentiating elements, subtle echoes of grunge also emerge, providing a more alternative sound, but also the sophistication of an instrumentation of great beauty and elegance. An interesting set of songs with a velvety desert warmth, which makes it a superb álbum!
~ Roberto Lucas (Denpa Fuzz)

7. MONKEY3 – WELCOME TO THE MACHINE / NEW!
8064 Points
Instrumental, Experimental, Progressive, Psychedelic, Space, Stoner
Lausanne, Switzerland
Napalm Records

On possibly their darkest and most epic album, MONKEY3 once again envelops listeners in their unique cosmic auditory haze. The band’s seventh album maintains the captivating power of the Swiss, raising the stakes and confirming once again that they are one of the outstanding bands of the psycho-space and stoner scene of the European continent. Between supernovas, asteroids, galaxies and black holes , MONKEY3‘s music manages to penetrate the listener as it has been doing for years, in an intriguing journey into the unknown, in search of answers. Embedded in intriguing melancholic atmospheres, the attacks of heaviness are brought out of an uncertain trance between colossal riffs, disturbing landscapes of keyboards and a strong rhythmic base. MONKEY3 does not adhere solely to psychedelic standards, but borrows post-rock moments and complex progressive developments, to captivate the listener on an astral journey towards the unexplored in which Floydian echoes have their space.
~ Roberto Lucas (Denpa Fuzz)

6. DEADPEACH – THE COSMIC HAZE AND THE HUMAN RACE / NEW!
8180 Points
Psychedelic Fuzz
Rimini, Italy
Self-released

Through smoke covered speakers drifts the psychedelic sounds of DEADPEACH. Taking their time to set the atmosphere, these jams are not afraid to chug, screech, howl and groove. Distorted waves of blues jams flirt with a clean vocal presence to create a solid album willing to take the listener into a parallel universe both familiar and new. Definite 70’s era vibes going here.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)

5. WITCHORIOUS – WITCHORIOUS / NEW!
12336 Points
Heavy, Stoner, Sludge, Occult
Chelles, France
Argonauta records

After Qilin last month, here’s another French band who raised the stoner scene to a higher level! WITCHORIOUS just released his first album (with a tremendous artwork made by Vaderetro studio), a perfect mix of heavy stoner, occult doom and tasty sludge. Antoine (guitar and vocals), with his witchy and gravy voice, praise Satan with end of the world riffs. Lucie, with her delicate bass and voice, brings some delicacy, immediately broken by the awesome drums by Paul, Lucie’s brother. I saw them in concert this month and I can tell you something : they are French, they are young, they have crazy talent and with this eponymous album, WITCHORIOUS may have already released the doom album of the year. Please dig it, again and again.
~ Damien Regnauld (Stoner Freaks Anthology)

4. THE OBSESSED – GILDED SORROW / NEW!
13671 Points
Doom, Classic Rock, Hardrock, Blues
Maryland, USA
Ripple Music

Yeah, Wino is back! After the first reunion album “Sacred” (2017), which was really good, “Gilded Sorrow” is now the second album since the reunion and here too, how could it be otherwise, Wino does not disappoint his fans. The first part of the long player impresses with bluesy classic rock tracks like the cool opener ‘Daughter Of An Echo’, the groovy ‘It’s Not OK’ or the straight-riffy ‘Realize A Dream’. In the last 20 minutes it gets doomier and the magnificent ‘Stoned Back To The Bomb Age’ alone justifies buying this album. If you like something slightly weird and psychedelic, ‘Yen Sleep’ is perfect for you. Wino delivered again, albeit only for 37 minutes.
~ Tom Schmahl (Rock Circuz)

3. BIG SCENIC NOWHERE – THE WAYDOWN / NEW!
17136 Points
Heavy Rock, Progressive, Stoner, Desert, Psych
California
Heavy Psych Sounds

I’m not always a super fan of supergroups but in the case of BIG SCENIC NOWHERE I’m all in. Tony Reed’s vocals are at the top of his game and his bass work is mesmerizing. The progressive song structure is sublime giving me all sorts of Mastodon meets Baroness vibes. Absolutely stunning!
~ Bucky Brown (The Ripple Effect)

2. MR BISON – ECHOES FROM THE UNIVERSE / NEW!
23207 Points
Progressive, Psychedelic, Stoner, Blues
Cecina, Italy
Heavy Psych Sounds

A prismatic journey that explores the notion of freedom and destiny through Norse mythology and weaves a majestic sonic tapestry filled with liquid riffs, elegant psychedelia, progressive grandeur and vibrant vocals. A modern and rewarding space journey that should please fans of bands such as Yes, King Buffalo, Elder, Naxatras and especially Motorpsycho. The weight of the keyboards makes the sound that until now we knew about them dissipate into new routes in which to expand their compositions. In this way the band embarks on a new path in its musical creation to a much more complex sound space, moving away in some way from the blues and stoner arguments present in its previous albums. Although the live band dispenses with the bass, here, the bass and keyboards make their songs appear more complex and rich in nuances.
~ Roberto Lucas (Denpa Fuzz)

1. SUNDRIFTER – AN EARLIER TIME / NEW!
39202 Points
Stoner, Grunge, Space Rock
Boston, Massachusetts
Small Stone Records

There is a solid wall of sound pushing this Boston trio. Delivering a complex recipe of groove heavy rock, SUNDRIFTER are not afraid to call back to some of the chart-topping artists of the 90’s and blend it with a modern measure of volume to call it their own. It feels simultaneously welcoming and fresh. Bordering on doom rock and could land on almost any stereo where the house is ready to party. There is a spacey element to the overall songwriting and that has found me returning to the table to dig in for another helping.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)

I was totally blown away by Visitations, the first album from SUNDRIFTER, released six years ago. This month, Boston guys offer us nothing more than a better one, full of crazy riffs, incredible horny moments where your head and feet will move uncontrollably. I’m not ready to get tired of it and I won’t be able to recover from such a musical slap. Dear Craig, Paul and Patrick, thanks for spreading such love, beauty and fucking good music to people !
~ Damien Regnauld (Stoner Freaks Anthology)

We music fans can be a greedy bunch, always wanting more material from our favorite artists. There is something to be said for the band that makes you wait for their next record. But when that album drops and you realize it was so worth the wait, there is some magic in that too. This is the case with the new album from SUNDRIFTER, who bring us their first release since 2018’s Visitations, An Earlier Time, brought to us by the also less is more leaning label, Small Stone Records. Visitations is universally loved, and I dare to say that An Earlier Time is even better, which is a seriously bold statement, but one I think the fans of the bands and new fans alike will agree with. For those unacquainted, SUNDRIFTER could be considered fuzzy space grunge or maybe if Soundgarden was from outer space instead of Seattle. Another good reference point would be the High Priest record from last year or maybe Hum and Failure, the two most underrated bands of the 90s.  Whatever you want to call it, the eight tracks on An Earlier Time are pretty much perfect.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

Space rock has an uncanny ability to use music to create a sense of vastness and awe combined with a feeling of danger and impending doom. However, vocals in this genre are often non-existent or rather languid, taking a bit of a back seat in favor of more intense, reverb-heavy instrumentals. On AN EARLIER TIME, the alternatively heavy and serene musical atmospheres are joined on the front lines with the massively powerful vocals of Craig Peura. These vocals serve as a guide through the great unknown, ensuring that you never get too dissociated while adding a huge amount of passion to the album. SUNDRIFTER is a three-piece band, but they’re able to create a colossal, multi-faceted sound that will not only rattle your insides with thundering cosmic riffs, but will stir your imagination with dreamy auditory panoramas.
~ Stephanie Zalta (Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

  1. While I agree the heavy underground is thriving and we all check the zones, sites and podcasts. Surely the best way to truly get into a band is by going out , putting your hand in your pocket and cash on the table and seeing them live- rather than sitting at home streaming the album? Strange that this wasn’t mentioned in the introduction. I suppose the live scene is more of an after thought in the heavy underground ( going by the size of the crowd for the last few shoes I was at) when it should be the staple. It is changed days indeed.

    1. Thanks for finding the Doom Charts and your lovely message Mick!

We completely agree and have been stating: going to shows, buying the physical product, t-shirts and posters on multiple occasions and on many intros. And over here, it’s definitely not an afterthought… It’s the most important action a new fan can take… And loads of shows over here are packed. But perhaps we are lucky over here. And perhaps the DC still serves as a first introduction to that new band’s first visit to ones hometown?

Keep going to shows Mick, and drag your friends along! 😉
