DOOM CHARTS – JUNE 2023

“Heavy music will not be contained. Heavy music breaks free. Heavy music expands to new territories. It crashes through barriers. Painfully, perhaps even dangerously. But, err, there it is, heavy music finds a way…”

~ Ian Malcolm

Here we are with the brand-new June 2023 edition of the Doom Charts. Featuring no less than 40 fresh and minty albums. Quite a few self-released albums charted the Top 25 this edition, which always warms our heart. But to our regret and sorrow we must lament, quite a few albums that aren’t featured on Bandcamp are also high on the list. We don’t want to keep singing the praise of Bandcamp continuously, but it works like a charm and has become a definite cornerstone of the Heavy Underground. Right? So, we do wonder why those bands do not take advantage of said platform. It’s another and much-loved way to get the word out on your glorious new album. But hey, those albums which can be heard online, can be heard online here, just scroll down and press play on all those thirty-six amazing new albums. Cause they rose to the top of 272 albums that received votes this month. And those other four? Well, the cool Rob Hammer features one on his Youtube channel… Another one can be found on Headbanger Channel and for the others, well, the Heavy Underground will find a way… Cause heavy, errr, all good music always finds a way…

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

25. FROM THE AGES – II / NEW!
950 Points
Psychedelic Stoner Rock
Portland, Oregon, USA
Self-Released

FROM THE AGES‘ second offering provides listeners with instrumental music that takes influences from Psychedelia, Stoner, Desert Rock, Blues, Western, and a few Middle Eastern vibes. They then temper them with heavy guitar riffs, throbbing bass lines, and rhythmic tribal drum beats for an outstanding overall listening experience. I highly recommend this record, as well as their first one.
~ Tom Hanno (Tom’s Reviews, The Third Eye)

24. MASSASAUGA – THE ONLY GOOD WIZARD IS A DEAD WIZARD / NEW!
1030 Points
Alternative Metal, Post-Punk, Doom, Stoner Rock
Coventry, UK
Self-Released

Elements of post-punk, doom, alternative metal and stoner rock can all be found scattered around on this little gem of an EP as well as some Sabbathian proto metal and 70’s British glam rock. To further confuse things there is also a loose concept running through this EP intended to tie all its songs together, don’t however let the word concept fool you into expecting po-faced seriousness as this EP is damn good fun.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

23. MOTORPSYCHO – YAY! / NEW!
1050 Points
Psych, Prog, Folk, Pop
Trondheim, Norway
Stickman Records / Det Nordenfjeldske Grammofonselskab

On their new longplayer “Yay!“, the almost divine MOTORPSYCHO surprise us with very calm, melancholic sounds. The Norwegians aren’t throwing out a prog grenade this time, but rather sound like they did on their albums “PHANEROTHYME” and “IT’S A LOVE CULT”, where they used acoustic instruments a lot and everything sounded very much like the seventies. Especially tracks like ‘Dark State’ (wonderful – reminiscent of Crosby Still’s Nash & Young), the so heartfelt ‘Sentinels’, the slightly psychedelic ‘Patterns’ or the grandiose ‘Hotel Daedalus’ (my god, what stunning guitar work). In short: if you celebrate MOTORPSYCHO, you will also say “Yay!” celebrate.
~ Tom Schmahl (Rock Circuz)

22. RIVAL SONS – DARKFIGHTER / NEW!
1057 Points
Hard Rock, Blues Rock, Seventies
Long Beach, CA, USA
Atlantic Records

NOT ON BANDCAMP

I’ve always appreciated RIVAL SONS’ talent for writing strong tunes and Jay Buchanan’s powerful voice since their 2009 debut. But despite seeing them live twice and being impressed, I’ve also held them at arm’s length, as I felt they weren’t quite distinctive enough, compared to a band like Iceland’s The Vintage Caravan. However, listening to Feral Roots (2019) and their latest next to Greta Van Fleet, I can see this band really does have it together, and deserves the mainstream success that inexplicably has only translated for GVF. Later in the year they’ll be releasing Lightbringer, which, the Rock Gods willing, will bring them some kind of crossover pop hit. Either way, anyone craving a bluesy hard rock band at the top of their game are in luck. Check out their video of “Nobody Wants to Die” with Fuzzlord and gang vs. The Preacher!
~ Tony Van Dorston (Fast n Bulbous)

21. BONGZILLA – DAB CITY / NEW!
1110 Points
Stoner, Doom, Sludge, Psych
Madison, Wisconsin, USA
Heavy Psych Sounds

Legendary Doom/Stoner Metallers release an album that’s based upon their beloved hometown of Madison, Wisconsin which is known as Mad City. Dab City is one of the purest forms of THC according to the band’s blurb that accompanied this release. Dab City fuses BONGZILLA‘s trademark WEEDIAN sound with a sly politically incorrect take on the American Political’s system dealing with the mighty weed. There’s brutally honest and brilliantly aware satirical lyrics throughout the album. Which shines a light on American Drug Culture over the last 60 years or so. The music is the real star and sees BONGZILLA doing what they do best. Playing down-tuned “DOOMED OUT” drug induced Stoner grooves which have that dangerous level of DISTORTED FUZZ the band are known for. There’s a couple tracks where BONGZILLA go way Progressive on the lengthier tracks of Dab City and American Pot. Less Psychedelic and Spaced Out compared to their 2021 release WEEDSCONSCIN. This is BONGZILLA going back to basics with their music but still including some Spaced Out themes along the way.  The band recorded this album whilst under the influence which isn’t surprising. As if you want an album talking about the almighty WEED then you want to be convinced any recording artist has lived that lifestyle. When you’re one of the legendary WEEDIAN bands from the Doom/Stoner Metal scene then you’re going to take their word as gospel. And Stoner Metal doesn’t get any more real than BONGZILLA on Dab City.
~ Steve Howe (Outlaws of the Sun)

20. THE DIRTY SEEDS – BEWARE THE BEAST MAN / NEW!
1240 Points
Stoner Rock, Doom
Houston, Texas
Self-Released

Stoner doom with the emphasis falling heavily on the stoner part of that equation. Snarly vocals, dank dark guitar tones, grumbling bass and thunderous drums spread out over four lengthy tomes is what you get with this unexpected gem of a release, a sound almost as big as the Lone Star State it was birthed in.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

19. WYTCH HAZEL – IV: SACRAMENT / NEW!
1947 Points
Hardrock, Heavy Metal
Lancaster, UK
Bad Omen Records

In the run-up to this release, one could only ask oneself whether WYTCH HAZEL from England can actually top their great predecessor. Their new work “IV: Sacrament” starts with the two outstanding mid-tempo hits ‘The Fire’s Control’ and ‘Angel Of Light’ – the twin guitars (like THIN LIZZY) are phenomenal and just out of this world. It continues with the slightly melancholic ‘Deliver Us’ (just great – what incredibly melodic guitars). Then ‘A Thousand Years’ picks up the pace again. Before ‘Digging Deeper’ provides a splendid conclusion, you can go to dreamland with the wonderfully acoustic (what a wonderful atmosphere) ‘Future Is Gold’. It’s really hard for me to say if WYTCH HAZEL actually managed to top their great predecessor, which doesn’t really matter because both albums are absolutely terrific.
~ Tom Schmahl (Rock Circuz)

18. MOUTH – GETAWAY / NEW!
2136 Points
Seventies Rock, Prog Rock, Retro Rock, Krautrock.
Cologne, Germany
This Charming Man Records

MOUTH is firmly rooted in seventies style hard rock or acid rock as it was called back in the day. So much so that they even named an album Live 71 even though they are a current band whose first album was in 2009. Although they fully embrace that scene and vibe I can’t really place one band that they sound like. They aren’t afraid to be different. Who starts an album with a 22 minute track? They do! They are their own animal and a lovely beast it is.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)

17. DEMONIO – REACHING FOR THE LIGHT / NEW!
2277 Points
Psychedelic, Stoner
Italy
Regain Records / Self-Released

18 months after the fantastic album « Electric voodoo », DEMONIO is back with « Reaching for the light ». Less acid and more funky, this new opus is full of fuzzy riffs, vintage moods and 70’s vibes. Guitar solos reminds us Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Hazel for the feeling of a guitarist who becomes one with his instrument. If you love this blessed era, please dig it, your ears will thank you !
~ Damien Regnauld (Stoner Freaks Anthology)

16. RAINBOWS ARE FREE – HEAVY PETAL MUSIC / NEW!
2358 Points
Stoner, Heavy Psych
Norman, Oklahoma, USA
Ripple Music

Heavy Petal Music is taken from a RAINBOWS ARE FREE hometown gig at the Summer Breeze Music Festival amongst throngs of loyalists who you can tell are having quite the experience. The band has been around for fifteen years and has three great albums and an EP to pick from for their setlist, which was done flawlessly for the record.  These guys are heavy psych stoner goodness, with the emphasis on the heavy, and have delivered to us the live album of 2023, which captures the band in top form and sounds amazing.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

15. SLOW WAKE – FALLING FATHOMS / NEW!
2512 Points
Post Metal, Prog Rock
Cleveland, Ohio, USA
Argonauta Records

Two back-to-back full listens of the album already and I feel like I can’t get enough of it. “Falling Fathoms” is the re-released, with one extra track, debut album of SLOW WAKE from Cleveland, Ohio, with members of Black Spirit Crown, Venomin James, Reginleif and Sparrowmilk, which easily qualifies them as a supergroup. (And yes, it charted last year as well!) Five killer songs with over 40 mins of music in the tradition of unsung heroes like Rishloo (“Living With Ghosts…” is a great place to start from) and the brilliant “Creatures” of Australia’s Khan. From the first note to the last one, the album has an excellent build-up with catchy pop vocal melodies spreading across thick layers of riffs and a rock solid rhythm section. The sound production is bright and warm, making me wonder how would this album sound on wax. Overall, one of the best albums that I have heard in a really long time, and which you really need to discover today!
~ Ioannis Valiakos (Desert Vulture)

14. YAWNING MAN – LONG WALK OF THE NAVAJO / NEW!
2873 Points
Desert Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Stoner Rock, Post-Rock
Palm Desert, CA. USA
Heavy Psych Sounds

When I hear the band YAWNING MAN mentioned I think “atmospheric, jam band, dark, Godfathers of desert rock, psychedelic, instrumental, epic, hypnotic, feedback soaked, post rock.” Their latest release “Long Walk of The Navajo” is everything that but so much more. They up their game big time in the solid, tight, production of this psych drenched, hypermelodic, heavy, brooding album. It’s perfect for a night of deep reflection soaking in this long, perfectly paced gem. Although they’re not reinventing the wheel here, nobody drives the music better. The only bummer is that it ends….
~ Mark Partin (The Ripple Effect)

13. FLASHBACK – THE DRACONIC OATH / NEW!
4472 Points
Hard Rock, Stoner Metal
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Northern Sun

Old school stoner doomheads that revel in riffs need to search out The Draconian Oath, the fourth full length from Calgary’s FLASHBACK. Containing a total of eight tracks, four of which are chugging up-tempo headbangers, three slower doomified ditties and one psych doomster, this will have you up and raging on first listen. Doom on people!!
~ Chris Tighe (The Mighty Decibel)

12. ROYAL THUNDER – REBUILDING THE MOUNTAIN / NEW!
4512 Points
Hard Rock, Alternative, Seventies, Garage, Stoner
Atlanta, GA, USA
Spinefarm

NOT ON BANDCAMP

While previous albums were around an hour long, this one is pretty concise, packing ten songs in under 40 minutes, just six minutes longer than their EP. The simmering “Drag Me” feels like it’s going to build to a boil, but aside from an elegant guitar solo from Josh Weaver that finishes with a noir twang, it holds back. Since Will Fiore left, the band has remained a trio, with all guitar duties falling on Weaver’s able hands. He shines throughout, such as on “Dead Star,” which suggests what Radiohead might sound like if they tried out hard rock. Single “The Knife” shows Parsonz unleashing her soulful powerhouse of a voice that inspired Janis Joplin comparisons, and “Now Here / No Where” ups the heaviness with some pounding ferocity. “Live to Live” shows off her range, from clear, high notes to controlled roars. This would be the song they’d use if ROYAL THUNDER became huge stars and they did a movie about them. After persevering through mind control cults, marriage troubles and breakups, this would be the song where audiences are startled by how Parsonz’ singing has only gotten more powerful, come to their senses and properly lose their minds.
~ Tony Van Dorston (Fast n Bulbous)

11. MAMMATUS – EXPANDING MAJESTY / NEW!
4608 Points
Epic Psychedelic Jam Rock
USA
Silver Current Records

Expanding Majesty distilled for eight years like a good spirit would, and the result is everything a fan of these Californian jam masters could hope for. Presented are four tracks, each well over fifteen minutes. Duelling guitars are key, the vocals are rare but perfectly hazy and in service to the music that feels uplifting and filled with a positive life energy. Everything the band did this time seems to be aimed upwards, high towards the skies. Like the comic book dragon in the artwork, the band constantly spreads their wings and glides from riff to riff, and from synth packed action tune in and out into the next jam.
~ Jasper Hesselink (Weirdo Shrine)

10. QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE – IN TIMES NEW ROMAN… / NEW!
6208 Points
Hard Rock, Alternative, Desert, Art Rock, Glam, Stoner, Robot
Palm Desert, CA, USA
Matador

The guitar sounds are more consistently thick and satisfying since probably Lullabies, though the kerfuffle over Mark Ronson’s production of the last album is overblown, given that there was still plenty of heavy guitar sounds, their clipped and compressed distortion carried over onto this album’s “What the Peephole Say.” What I do miss, however, is the liquidy psychedelia of my favorite tunes from Rated R (2000), “Better Living Through Chemistry” and “Auto Pilot,” which they’ve never really revisited, unless you count the somewhat spacey “Sicily.” I was also a fan of R‘s lengthy album closer “I Think I Lost My Headache,” that ends with squalling horns that connected The Stooges’ “L.A. Blues” with Radiohead’s “The National Anthem.” 23 years later, they one-up that closer with the suitably apocalyptic 9:01 “Straight Jacket Fitting” which, after its noisy extended crescendo, chills out with some acoustic strumming as we gaze forlornly at the wasted, smoking landscape.
~ Tony Van Dorston (Fast n Bulbous)

9. LAMASSU – MADE OF DUST / NEW!
6256 Points
Stoner Rock, Hard Rock, Doom Metal, Grunge
Melbourne, Australia
Self-Released

Made Of Dust is the brilliant sophomore album by Aussie band LAMASSU. These guys know what doom and stoner mean and they merge both concepts with other genres to get their own heavy rock. The horizon seems to be quiet but the (inner and physical) journey is rugged to reach it. Let’s meander boredomlessly with them for 68 minutes along the dusty path, among stellar melodies, crushing riffs, contemplative twilights – to each bend, its new panorama. An album made of dust is a negentropic experience that brings me strength.
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T François (Metal Intégral)

8. KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD – PETRODRAGONIC APOCALYPSE / NEW!
6678 Points
Psychedelic, Progressive, Math Rock
Melbourne, Australia
KGLW / Self-Released

Metamorphic Melbourners KG&TLW return hot on the heels of “Omnium Gatherum” with another molten hot display of awe-inspiring Psychedelic and Progressive Rock – running the gauntlet through Heavy Psych, Math Rock and Progressive passages with the ease and fluidity of a seemingly telepathic band. 7 tracks of pure astonishment!
~ Reek of STOOM (Howls from The Hollows, Doomed&StonedStoner HiVe)

7. SNAKEMOTHER – SNAKEMOTHER / NEW!
7973 Points
Doom, Progressive
Oakland, California, USA
Self-Released

As powerful and crushing as the music is, there’s a lightness and effortlessness to the performances that take it beyond the genre of “Doom”, while remaining unmistakably DOOM. SNAKEMOTHER are like a combination of Faetooth meets Messa with a dose of Opeth, YOB and Trouble, a dash of The Bangles and a hint of Bananarama. It all comes together to form that most elusive gem: The Perfect Album…
~ Scott Spiers (CleanAndSoberStoner)

6. DEAD QUIET – IV / NEW!
9006 Points
Doom, Hard Rock, Stoner, Blues Rock
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Artoffact Records

Man, am I a sucker for organ in my rock. Add a sense of urgency and danger to a record of killer heaviness and you get the newest and best record from DEAD QUIET, IV. Think Graveyard and Witchcraft meets the Murder City Devils and you get a sense of what IV is bringing to the table. IV is a visceral experience that everyone should be a part of. DEAD QUIET is here for you to help you wallow in whatever ails you at any given moment.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

5. WITCHSKULL – THE SERPENT TIDE / NEW!
9576 Points
Stoner, Doom
Canberra, Australia
Rise Above Records

NOT ON BANDCAMP

WITCHSKULL are back with a vicious, menacing groove filled swag of dark riffage. It’s an instant maximum volume classic lurching out of the crypt – thundering bass, tight drums, infectious riffs, blistering solos, and some of the most unique and exciting vocals as always courtesy of the mega talented Marcus De Pasquale. One of the absolute top shelf heavy bands going in the Australian scene today, with ‘The Serpent TideWITCHSKULL have somehow surpassed the excellence of their previous album ‘A Driftwood Cross’, no mean feat! Put simply, it’s a slab of pure hell yeah that you need on your turntable and in your ears ASAP.
~ Clint Willis (Hand of Doom Radio)

4. HIGH PRIEST – INVOCATION / NEW!
12900 Points
Grunge, Stoner, Doom, Metal
Chicago, Illinois
Magnetic Eye Records

Invocation is like if Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Hum, Iron Maiden, and Thin Lizzy had a fuzzy baby from outer space. HIGH PRIEST takes their time and are meticulous with what they put out, which really shows given how freaking awesome Invocation is.  This is fuzzy, grungy, doomy, spacey awesomeness that will hang with anything that has been put out this year so far and currently sits at my number two album for 2023. That’s how great Invocation is.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

3. BLACK RAINBOWS – SUPERSKULL / NEW!
16836 Points
Stoner Rock, Heavy Psych
Rome, Italy
Heavy Psych Sounds

BLACK RAINBOWS at their absolute best. Listeners will not only find all of their signature high-octane, stoner rock and heavy psych, but so much more! BLACK RAINBOWS also shows a more melodic and softer side. Not only one of my favorite albums of the year so far, but arguably their best work to date.
~ Ryan Foster (Slightly Fuzzed)

2. CHURCH OF MISERY – BORN UNDER A MAD SIGN / NEW!
20618 Points
Stoner, Heavy Psych, Doom
Tokyo, Japan
Rise Above Records

NOT ON BANDCAMP

Japanese doom/heavy stoner legends CHURCH OF MISERY are back with their first new material since 2016, which is way too long because CoM rules. The band’s worship of all things serial killer and Iommi is on full display here with their heavy, tuned down stoner doom with psychedelic leanings, creepy as hell subject matter and newsreel snippets. Oh yeah, and an awesome Haystacks Balboa cover with lots of organ. Seriously, what’s not to like here. This is an album of the year candidate that will slay you and the competition.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

1. SAINT KARLOFF – PALEOLITHIC WAR CRIMES / NEW!
22250 Points
Stoner, Psych, Prog, Proto
Oslo, Norway
Majestic Mountain Records

It must be so difficult to continue a band after suffering a tragedy like SAINT KARLOFF did in 2021, losing one of the founders and bass player Ole Sletner to cancer. For our sake and most likely as a form of healing therapy, the band is back with their first album since 2018, Paleolithic War Crimes. These guys bring the stoner fuzz heavy, channeling everything from Sabbath to 60s psych, to Electric Wizard, to Zeppelin, while never sounding too much like any of them. Paleolithic War Crimes takes this to the next level, as you have seven absolutely killer tracks to rock out, chill out, and/or expand your mind to.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

If you’re looking for some excellent psych stoner fare, you are hereby advised to check out Paleolithic War Crimes, the third full length from Norway’s SAINT KARLOFF. Similar to fellow countrymen Hex A.D., SAINT KARLOFF include active Hammond organ, adding a prog feel to their sound akin to the weird sections on Sabbath’s Sabbath Bloody Sabbath record. Additionally, they sport a vocalist that reminds me of Chris Cornell of Soundgarden fame. But most importantly, the band know how to write and deliver memorable tracks.
~ Chris Tighe (The Mighty Decibel)

SAINT KARLOFF seemingly effortlessly skirts along all possible pitfalls when you aim to make your album as diverse and grandiose as possible. It’s a dangerous game when you opt to go a different route than most others and by doing so turning the outcome into something purely yourself, but SAINT KARLOFF pulls it off, and makes it all come together on Paleolithic War Crimes. Like clockwork, the timing and tone are executed to perfection. Heavy in dynamics, choosing for sonic brutality one moment and serene classic sounding psych the next. Surprise lurks around every corner and if you let it, Paleolithic War Crimes will shock and awe…
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)
