DOOM CHARTS – May 2023

“Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.”

~ Lou Gehrig

Here we are, on the First Friday of the new Month looking back at yet another Month filled with amazing releases. A month that might have felt a bit quiet on the Doom Charts front, and that is because yours truly left on a holiday to Scotland for three weeks of hiking and completely off grid stuff and had limited time to arrange things properly before he left. This will not happen again. My apologies. Returning to the Heavy Underground always feels like a warm embrace though, especially when you see so many amazing albums all waiting to be spun. And even more so when some of the Contributors immediately contact you raving about this or that album. Some frantically so, because his blurb was received a fraction after the deadline. Which means it will be used for the Peroration post in two weeks. He stated: “Five tracks of leviathan, tectonic soundscapes coupled with the harmonies of twin vocalists… EPIC is an understatement: The Very ECHT of Doom: Panoramic, Epic and Majestic every which way you turn!” and ends that blurb with: ” … have a Unique vibe, Appealing sound, Awesome Concept and may well have just catapulted Themselves into the Echelons! Unmissable!” So, you best believe we were listening to that album immediately! And then to think there were more Contributors with other favorite albums that demanded to be heard as soon as possible as well. Amazing! In fact, 323 albums received votes this month. How lucky are we that we have this abundance of great music to listen to and love? Cause that’s a lot of love for all that Heavy Rock once again. And some of that love is now featured below… Go check’m out! Check’m all out!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

25. GRAND ATOMIC – BEYOND THE REALM OF COMMON SENSE / NEW
1200 Points
Heavy Psych, Stoner
Frederikstad, Norway
Evil Noise Recordings

What we love in the stoner scene is that a small band who released just one EP may record one of the most serious candidates for the Album Of The Year award in front of bands who have been in the area for several years. That’s what happened with GRAND ATOMIC who released a heavy-stoner masterpiece and « BEYOND THE REALM OF COMMON SENSE » is an absolute raw and melodic gem. Tremendous production, awesome artwork and an album which can be listened several times without losing its strength. Two thumbs up !
~ Damien Regnauld (Stoner Freaks Anthology)

24. APEX TEN – AASHRAY / NEW
1224 Points
Psychedelic, Space-rock, Stoner
Belgium
Self-released

Since their first EP, I said to myself: “I think I will keep an eye on this Belgian band”. Indeed, their psychedelic improvisations mixed with stoner vibrations and spatial atmospheres augured a bright future for them. And this month, APEX TEN release AASHRAY and my predictions have come true: with APEX TEN, we discover a future headliner of all stoner fests and, perhaps, a serious contender for the prize of “best space-stoner band” currently owned by Slift.
~ Damien Regnauld (Stoner Freaks Anthology)

23. SLUGG – ORICHALCUM / NEW
1518 Points
Sludge, Doom, Post-metal, Prog-metal
Rome, Italy
Self-released

SLUGG tells us about the legendary metal of alchemists: Orichalcum. This mysterious alloy is also a good definition of their magic sound blending doom, sludge and post-metal with unspeakable ingredients. Another alloy is the vocal one in which a clear voice answers to creepy growls. 43 minutes of heavy crushing metal in 4 long tracks, so atmospheres have time enough to self-transform, crawling in dark crypts. No doubts Orichalcum is still a fascinating alloy.
~ Thierry “Slowpoke-T François (Metal Intégral)

22. BIRDS OF NAZCA – HÉLIOLITE / NEW
1540 Points
Instrumental, Stoner, Psychedelic, Fuzz, Doom
Nantes, France
Self-released

From Nantes, France comes instrumental duo Birds of Nazca. And on their newest release Héliolite they once again give us that delicious heavy fuzz, heavy psych, heavy stoner and high energy doom! This time around the sound has grown richer, thicker, and fit for a narrative about deep diving into a mine for emeralds and diamonds. Cause with restraint and precision, the short intro and three tracks shine and glisten like that dark rock pressurized for ages and ages until it shatters into millions of precious drum fills and riffs! Three tracks that give you everything you need… (And they sell white band shirts! Grin!)
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)

21. NEON BURTON – TAKE A RIDE / NEW
1620 Points
Psychedelic hard rock, stoner, space rock
Cologne, Germany
Self-released

Spacey, psychedelic stoner! This isn’t lofty, aimless or experimental though. It flows great and even has heavier elements. A very strong outing for these guys. This album really grabbed me this month and was on constant rotation.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)

20. TREVOR’S HEAD – A VIEW FROM BELOW / NEW
1752 Points
Stoner Punk, Grunge, Hard Rock, Prog
Redhill, UK
APF Records

If there was ever a band harder to nail down with tag or a label than TREVOR’S HEAD then i’ve yet to hear them. TREVOR’S HEAD‘s music is not inspired by any specific bands or genres it is a sum of all the music that’s ever passed through their hairy little heads over their lifetimes topped off with generous helpings of tongue in cheek British humour. The band have released some great albums over the years but with “A VIEW FROM BELOW” they have truly excelled themselves.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

19. BRIDGE FARMERS – COSMIC TRIGGER / NEW
1937 Points
Stoner, Psychedelic Doom
Austin, Texas
Olde Magick Records

The music sits firmly in the stoner/psychedelic doom camp and many, many riffs await the listener… quite heavy for the style in places and the vocals get a little gruff and rough throughout, making this album as crushing as it is hazy. BRIDGE FARMERS‘ ‘COSMIC TRIGGER,’ is an adventurous album that will appeal to fans of music that makes you feel like you shouldn’t have ate that last mushroom but will hold the attention of anyone who likes riff based music or doom in general.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

18. ASTRODEATH – VOL. II / NEW
2160 Points
Punk, Stoner Metal
Sydney, Australia
Heavy Psych Sounds

ASTRODEATH are able to weave effortlessly between punk, metal, and stoner. At moments they are all out abrasive but bring you right back in with contagious hooks, never wandering too far into any specific territory. The Australian duo created a blistering and relentless assault on their Heavy Psych Sounds debut.
~ Ryan Foster (Slightly Fuzzed)

17. SMOKEY MIRROR – SMOKEY MIRROR / NEW
2475 Points
Heavy Psych, Acid Garage
Dallas, Texas
Rise Above Records

On their hotly anticipated self-titled debut album, SMOKEY MIRROR deliver 9 blistering tracks of heavy and bluesy psychedelia. While some may be tempted to group them with the proto-metal that Rise Above is often known for, a better comparison would the the garage-with-chops fierceness of fellow Texans amplified heat, or even a twin guitar Radio Moscow. Think one of the better San Diego psych bands if they traded their boards (both key and skate) for speed and Stooges records. However you think about it, SMOKEY MIRROR is a damn good time that begs for repeat listens.
~ Ben Bellum (The Greatest Thing You’ve Never Heard)

16. HIGH LEAF – VISION QUEST / NEW
3081 Points
Stoner Rock, Grunge, Heavy Psych
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Riffslayer Records

HIGH LEAF‘s weedian grooves, served up with some alt-metal/rock dynamics and healthy pinches of heavy psych, make for some very tasty ear candy, especially for those who see 90’s stoner/desert rock as the natural evolution of mid 80’s grunge.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

15. HIBERNAUT – INGRESS / NEW
3179 Points
Doom, Sludge, Stoner-metal
Salt Lake City, Utah
Self-released

HIBERNAUT create with their musical tools, consisting of fat and brash riffs, humming bass, waltzing drums, piercing guitar solos and powerful, rough and sinister vocals, a doomy metal backdrop that wields a devastatingly heavy hand but never slips into brutality. The whole work is a gripping, acoustic feverish rush that doesn’t care about genre barriers but makes use of them in an idiosyncratic and at the same time harmonious way, with finesse shaken out of its sleeve.  This perhaps creates that subliminal groove and reminiscence of musical visions realized with natural playfulness and ease, which are damn reminiscent of underground works of times long past. – the musical experience of old hands in the business pays off here. This majestic work is a monstrous, 74 minute horror scenarios crashing „devil’s sugar” for those who adore masterful, musical heaviness and don’t care too much about genre definitions. – I swear to the unholy Satan, if you risk an ear, you will be infected with the “HIBERNAUT fever” for life Hug-thanks for this masterpiece HIBERNAUT guys and the feverish delirium that gripped me when I listened to your album.
~ Mel Lie (Sunday’s Heavy Tunes)

14. THOUSAND VISION MIST – DEPTHS OF OBLIVION / NEW
3310 Points
Doom Metal, Prog
Laurel, Maryland
Self-released

In the annals of Maryland Doom, there’s a lineage of great and influential guitarists: Victor Griffin, Wino, Al Morris, Dale Flood, John Brenner, Dennis Cornelius, etc. THOUSAND VISION MIST’s Danny Kenyon is absolutely a part of that lineage, having slugged it out in the underground for more than two decades. The second album by his current band, THOUSAND VISION MIST, may just his crowning achievement. Rounded out by bassist AR Comulada and drummer Chris Sebastian, TVM’s DEPTHS OF OBLIVION lays down a blistering, progressive vision of post-Obsessed and Unorthodox doom. If you’re not already familiar with THOUSAND VISION MIST, give them a listen; your favorite musicians are already fans.
~ Ben Bellum (The Greatest Thing You’ve Never Heard)

13. KANAAN – DOWNPOUR / NEW
3510 Points
Instrumental Heavy Jam Rock
Norway
Jansen Records

There are instrumental bands that can take you to other worlds in psychedelic bliss, and there are instrumental bands that stay very much in the now, just being themselves and happy to be there. KANAAN out of Norway has heavy “now” vibes. They are “just” three dudes hitting it off instrumentally, but doing it so incredibly well and spontaneous that you find yourself locked in the groove in seconds, jaw to the floor, 100% captivation. The whole thing is a top notch trip, but few personal highlights cannot be left unnoticed; the title track Downpour for instance because of its rhythmic acrobatics and smooth Motorpsycho vibes, Amazon because it features a collaboration with the magnificent Hedvig Mollestad and one of the most memorable riffs this side of 2023, and finally the two parts of Solaris, that make up a thrilling psychedelic space jam that would not be out of place scoring the actual movie.
~ Jasper Hesselink (Weirdo Shrine)

12. HIGH DESERT QUEEN & BLUE HERON – TURNED TO STONE CHAPTER 8: THE WAKE / NEW
4410 Points
Heavy Psych, Stoner
New Mexico & Texas, USA
Ripple Music

Here is the eighth episode of the “TURNED TO STONE” series initiated by Ripple Music to allow the label’s artists to indulge in the often-perilous exercise of splitting. The previous 7 were all essential and this last chapter is no exception to the rule. Under an absolutely delicious artwork by Johnny Dombrowski hide 3 songs from HIGH DESERT QUEEN (don’t miss their excellent album “Secrets of the black moon”) and 3 from BLUE HERON, who blew us away with their first album “Ephemeral” . A concentrate of pure US stoner, effective, mind-blowing and without frills.
~ Damien Regnauld (Stoner Freaks Anthology)

11. OCEANLORD – KINGDOM COLD / NEW
4560 Points
Doom
Melbourne, Australia
Magnetic Eye Records

Australian doom baby!!! OCEANLORD has dropped their debut of slow burning doom goodness on us from down under as they release their mythical sea creature, in this case six killer tracks of traditional and not so traditional doom, upon the masses. This is heavy, fuzzy, doom with cool vocals, and a kind of constant buzz across all the tracks. This must be from the deep parts of the Australian Ocean because KINGDOM COLD lives up to its chilly name. OCEANLORD is the future of doom for years to come.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

10. THEY WATCH US FROM THE MOON – COSMIC CHRONICLES, ACT I: THE ASCENSION / NEW
4665 Points
Space Doom
Lawrence, Kansas
New Heavy Sounds

I believe that this is the best band out there right now! The vocals are outstanding, but that’s to be expected when you have two ladies as talented as Luna Nemeses and Nova 1001001 are. Their soaring vocals mix well with the doomy riffs and exceptional lead guitar work, making for one of the best records to ever grace the Doom Charts list!
~ Tom Hanno (Tom’s Reviews, The Third Eye)

9. BLOOD CEREMONY – THE OLD WAYS REMAIN / NEW
5313 Points
Heavy Psych, Prog Folk Doom
Toronto, Canada
Rise Above Records

Our doom metal album of May is the fifth full length from Toronto’s BLOOD CEREMONY entitled THE OLD WAYS REMAIN. While some may argue that the band’s “flute tinged witch rock” is more psych/prog/folk bent than doom, there are enough of the latter sub-genre’s tropes to fit in the doom category. Complete with sax, fiddle and flute, this most certainly is a diverse outing, but the strength of the song writing lures you in and entices you to hit repeat. Think Sabbath crossed with Witchwood, Lucifer and early Heart.
~ Chris Tighe (The Mighty Decibel)

8. THE MACHINE – WAVE CANNON / NEW
5346 Points
Stonerrock, Psychedelic Rock, Grunge
Dordrecht, Netherlands
Majestic Mountain Records

With ‘WAVE CANNON’ their seventh release, THE MACHINE harness a deeply psychedelic flow of perpetual finesse, yet somehow retain captivating power while dulcetly drifting on a more grunge-gaze plain, laced through heavy, melodic harmonics and exceptionally cohesive composition. With a new, renewed purpose and inspiration to further explore the core fabric of THE MACHINE’s trademark heavy grooves, the band is pushing the envelope of texturally atmospheric fuzz and big riffs with a refreshed rhythm section alongside the magnetic guitar and vocal presence of founding member David Eering. The band bring us seven astonishingly fresh and electrifying tracks of THE MACHINE redefined, without losing their original, heavy essence. With entrancing songcraft at its genesis, ‘WAVE CANNON’ shows us THE MACHINE as we have never heard them before yet indulges our love for their original, heavy psychedelic nature. This is a gorgeous, “must have” release from THE MACHINE which deserves every bit of the immense praise it’s been receiving.
~ The Doom Oracle (Spectral Ecstacy)

7. DUSKWOOD – THE LAST VOYAGE / NEW
5446 Points
Stoner, Desert
Somerset, UK
Ripple Music

Ripple Music has done it again with another amazing release (I have this statement saved so I can just cut and paste it), as DUSKWOOD has brought to us a top-notch desert/stoner rock future classic album with THE LAST VOYAGE. Think England’s version of Valley Of The Sun, and that alone should help to get what these guys are all about. Bask in the glow of the desert moon awesomeness that is THE LAST VOYAGE.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

6. VERMILION WHISKEY – CRIMSON & STONE / NEW
5865 Points
Southern Stoner Metal
Lafayette, Louisiana USA
10 South Productions

VERMILION WHISKEY has been creating their southern hard and heavy vibe for about a decade now. Sounding like an amalgamation of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Corrosion of Conformity and Down, with their own brand of subtle sleazy groove that catapults them into fresh territory. Crimson & Stone is another outstanding chapter in the band’s legacy and delivers on all fronts. If VERMILION WHISKEY was an actual whiskey it would bite like a viper, smell like a swamp and have a smokey finish. Enjoy irresponsibly.
~ Adam Walsh (Earmunchies)

5. LOOSE SUTURES – SADO SEX FOR DUMMIES / NEW
6137 Points
Fuzz, Garage, Seventies, Rock, Heavy Psych
Sardinia, Italy
Electric Valley Records

Italy must have something in the water lately, because they keep churning out nothing but quality old school psychedelic rock. The latest in this string of killer releases comes in the form of LOOSE SUTURESSADO SEX FOR DUMMIES. The band proves that not only is rock not dead, but in fact it’s stronger than ever. They bring the goods, delivering mind blowing guitar work, excessive groove, classic vocals, a healthy dose of sleaze and more fuzz than you’ll find on a month-old piece of fruit. With guest appearances from Alain Johannes and Nick Oliveri, you know its going to be good.
~ James Sweetlove (CaveDwellerMusic)

4. MOONSTONE – GROWTH / NEW
6188 Points
Doom
Krakow, Poland
Galactic Smokehouse/Interstellar Smoke Records

MOONSTONE’s doom metal, as expressed on their second full length, appropriately titled GROWTH, is a study in flow and dynamics. There’s a mastery of songcraft here, the tones, the sonic lurch, the note choices, the inter-layered clean, droning vocals… it all comes together to evoke a gloriously somber atmosphere. If you’re looking for a reference, I’d say that Mirror of Deception, earlier Altar of Oblivion, and perhaps Dawn of Winter all come to mind, but there’s something more expansive here than you’d have from any one of those (excellent) outfits. Elements of post-metal’s beauty/discordance juxtaposition, a hint of psychedelia, a willingness to sit in the stillness of the quiet passages. In GROWTH, MOONSTONE have produced a truly lugubrious triumph.
~ Ben Bellum (The Greatest Thing You’ve Never Heard)

3. ALCONAUT – ENDLESS SKIES / NEW
11153 Points
Heavy, Stoner, Psychedelic
Bastia, France
Self-released

John Lennon would have said one day: “French rock is like english wine: it just shouldn’t be there”. Indeed, difficult to prove him wrong at the time but since then, the French rock scene (and the stoner scene moreover) has caught up well and one of the very best albums of the month comes straight from Corsica. ALCONAUT continues its exploration of heavy psychedelic sounds after “Sands turns to tide” released in 2019. Their new offering is called “ENDLESS SKIES” and the “American-style” production dazzles the eyes and above all dazzles the ears. Good job guys!
~ Damien Regnauld (Stoner Freaks Anthology)

2. FORMULA 400 – DIVINATION / NEW
11571 Points
Stoner, Hard rock, Heavy rock
San Diego, CA, USA
Animated Insanity Records (North America), No Dust Records (Europe)

This straight-in-your-face album is a blend of raw stoner and hard rock which always seems to be on the point of exploding like a barrel of powder. FORMULA 400 roars like Steppenwolf meeting Motörhead meeting Fu Manchu. There is a strong smell of fuel, grease and burnt dust coming out of the hot engine but it keeps on riding like a true asphalt eater. Will you be able to stop it? My Divination: sure, you won’t.
~ Thierry “Soothsayer-T François (Metal Intégral)

1. GOZU – REMEDY / NEW
20966 Points
Stoner, Grunge
Boston, Massachusetts
Metal Blade Records

GOZU rules and now they are back with their fifth album, REMEDY.  Lovers of all things fuzzy and riff-filled rejoice, because this new record kicks a lot of ass.  The band brings their perfect blend of heavy stoner rock with touches of the grunge (and excellent track names) back to the ever-loving fanbase, honoring us with nine absolutely killer tracks that will cement this band as one of the best ever doing what they do.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

Five long years have passed since the release of sophomore album “Equilibrium” back in 2018. now the legendary Stoner/Desert band from Boston have returned with renewed vigour and crushing tunes in “REMEDY“. 9 tracks of high-octane, pedal-to-the-metal fuzz worship at once reminiscent of Sabbath, High On Fire and Big Scenic Nowhere but unmistakeably GOZU in style and delivery! A Peach of an album!
~ Reek of STOOM (Doomed&StonedStoner HiVe)

Heavy New England stalwarts GOZU return after 5 years to continue their brand of pro shop stoner rock with “REMEDY“. The Bostonians lay down nine slabs of chunky riffage for a meaty Alice In Chains vibe, oozing with mood and a confidence that’s well earned and yet again well deserved.
~ Kyle SB / Shasta Beast (Stoner HiVe)
