DOOM CHARTS – JULY 2025

“As far as we were concerned, we were just a blues band that had decided to write some scary music.”

~ Ozzy Osbourne

We’ve said goodbye to one of our heroes. One that always felt like one of ours. Cause he never  hid his faults, his shortcomings and was honest about everything. He was one of a kind. And even though the character he was and finally became might have hindered some of his future actions, he was always himself and never shied away from doing what he loved doing. Music. He and his Birmingham mates are without any doubt responsible for all that music we so dearly love. The heavy stuff. All that he produced and all that he inspired. The forty albums in the list below are all in some way or form in debt to the cannon blast that he delivered. Ever since that ominous church bell, that first riff and that first vocal line… “What is this that stands before me?”

Well, Dear Ozzy… It’s the Doom Charts. And it would not exist if it wasn’t for you. None of the forty albums below would exist. And we thank you for them all. And we thank you for giving up petty crime and forming a band. We thank you for hunting around town for a microphone and amplifier. We thank you for finding the guys that became your band members… We thank you for the fucking awesome ad!  And we thank you for changing The Polka Tulk Blues Band into Black Sabbath… We thank you for all the music…

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

1040 Points
Sludge, Doom, Metal
Patchogue, New York, USA
BRC30 Productions

I love the energy in this album–it is pervasive, raucous, and feels unlimited.  It isn’t often that anything under the doom and sludge pantheon has such boundless exuberance, but this album is infectious as hell in terms of its flow.  There is a hardcore/punk energy to the music and vocals, which makes sense because, well, sludge.  The doomy, despondent atmosphere is always present though, so it makes for a very engaging and interesting listen.  This album is both sullen and explosive. The tempo varies quite a bit, the album rolling freely between fast parts and slower paced passages but always bringing with it massive riffs and strong rhythms.  The production is pretty tight, capturing the low tones and bringing them to the ears without any strain or difficulty.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (DoomedForMetal)

24. PHANTOM SPELL – HEATHER & HEARTH / NEW!
1134 Points
Prog, Rock, Metal
Murcia, Spain
Cruz Del Sur Music / Wizard Tower Records

This is the kind of prog rock that honors tradition by moving back in time and doing everything the old fashioned way. Imploring the metal of yore, the first tones of NWOBHM and rock of the ages. But we’re listening to the new album Heather & Hearth by the highly nostalgic and incredibly warm PHANTOM SPELL. The brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Kyle McNeill also vocalist and guitarist for Seven Sisters, PHANTOM SPELL is one man, born in the lockdown kind of project that has become its own adventure. One spinning its own legendary and fantasy inspired progressive tale. The journey continues…
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)

23. FUZZ THROWER – FUZZ THROWER / NEW!
1166 Points
Stoner Rock, Psych, Grunge
Netherlands
PowerWax Records

FUZZ THROWER is a one man project from Phantom Druid’s Tjeerd de Jong, a truly engaging collection of devotional flavoured tunes drenched in fuzz and decorated in smooth mantra-like vocals. It is not a heavy album, although it does get that way on occasions, this more a transitional album, the perfect platter to listen to after playing something crushing and brutal and before playing something languid and tranquil.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

22. I AM LOW – INERTIA / NEW!
1358 Points
Rock, Stoner, Doom, Psychedelic
Umea, Sweden
Majestic Mountain Records

I AM LOW‘s EP Inertia is full of desert/stoner doom with a funky sensibility, not afraid to swing a bit! One can actually dance (I can’t, but you can) to this record. Heavy heavy heavy guitars, thunderous drums (the mix is amazing), and ethereal vocals complete this smooth as hell album. Fans of Psychlona will dig this. Its psychedelic, with hints of Pink Floyd and an underlying Swedish desert sound. This propels Inertia to the next level. Like its name suggests, this is an object in motion that will stay in motion. Everything is perfect here, the engineering, the mix, the songwriting, and the performance. This is the kind of album that keeps me coming back for more heavy underground rock. AotM? It is for me!
~ S Patrick Brooks (The Heavy Underground Farm Report, CleanAndSoberStoner)

21. THE LONG HUNT – NATURAL ORDER / NEW!
1620 Points
Metal, Alternative Rock, Doom, Drone, Psych, Instrumental
Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, USA
Cernunnos Records

Sometimes I like an instrumental album even better than one with vocals. Oftentimes when there are stoner/doom/psych bands who stretch it out a bit I feel the better parts are the instrumental interludes anyway. This album is a fuzzy, metallic, psychedelic journey that delivers on what it is meant to do, keep you interested and entertained for the duration of the entire album experience. If you’re like me and also sometimes crave some tasty instrumental nugs, THE LONG HUNT has your nourishment.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)

20. GOBLINSMOKER – THE KING’S ETERNAL THRONE / NEW!
1680 Points
Sludge Metal, Doom Metal
Durham, England
APF Records

Continuing the twisted saga of the Goblin King, the bands deliver another concrete slab! Monolithic guitars, guttural vocals, and crushing grooves make this a must-hear for fans of Bongripper, Electric Wizard, and Conan. It’s a record that feels as colossal and unstoppable as the throne it was forged for.
~ Doomsday Jesus (Cries From The Underworld)

19. KOMBYNAT ROBOTRON – AANK / NEW!
1830 Points
Krautrock, Heavy Psych, Noise Rock
Kiel, Germany
Fuzz Club

What happens when modern day krautrock and psych jam frontrunners KOMBYNAT ROBOTRON decide to write proper songs without denying the jams and improvisations that cemented their status as the best band in the genre? Well, you get one hell of an album that rumbles, roars, twists, shakes and swirls like nothing else and leaves you behind stupefied and flabbergasted, unable to speak proper words for an elongated period of time. All that comes out of your mouth is an uncontrolled “AANK” and that probably is the only right thing to say.
~ Ronny Dijksterhuis (Stoner HiVe)

18. STEINSOPP – GOLOKA SESSIONS / NEW!
2475 Points
Heavy Psych, Heavy Blues, Stoner
Oslo, Norway
King Volume Records

Beneath starry skies and the detonation of a hundred supernovae the mystical sounds of the new STEINSOPP album flow through both space, time, and a massive haze of distortion. The guitars expel qualities of both heavy blues and stoner rock as the sage-like vocals spew forth like a banshee, alerting the universe of their presence. The bass is enveloped in an infinite groove, while the drums pound out the rhythmic foundations around the chaos of the exploding stars. The soundscapes of Goloka Sessions create the perfect soundtrack to the collapses and tranquil aftermath as the dust clouds settle and surround you.
~ Jon McGough (Stoner Rock Army, Stoner HiVe, Outlaws Of The Sun)

17. HELL – SUBMERSUS / NEW!
2674 Points
Doom, Metal, Sludge
Oregon, USA
Sentient Ruin / Lower Your Head

Submersus is an agonizingly slow crawl on all fours into the darkest dampest depths of human misery. On the way you get to experience pretty vistas and soothing breeze, but don’t forget where you’re heading. Its massive soundscapes are quite an overwhelming experience, sonically coating you with a weighted blanket and it leaves me with positive energy; as in reminding one that it could be worse and this too will pass. But it also has calmness in the midst of all the horrors, beautiful acoustic feeling passages between all that weight.
~ Jukka ‘Shrike’ Kolehmainen (Psychotropic Caravan, Abhorrence, Shrike’s Playlists)

16. THREE TOWERS – TIES THAT BIND / NEW!
2893 Points
Doom, Metal, Punk, Rock n’ Roll, Stoner, Thrash, Crossover
Oakland, California, USA
Wet Records

Never mind ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ on this album THREE TOWERS take all the above mentioned genres and throw them IN the kitchen sink. Then they puke in it, piss and shit in it and serve it up with a vengeance, hot and greasy. In all seriousness this is some bad ass Stoner Metal coming at you loud, proud and hard af. Warning: May cause feelings of Aggression and Distress.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)

15. CARBON DECOY – CRUSH THE SUN / NEW!
3341 Points
Garage Rock, Stoner Rock
Detroit, Michigan, USA
Self-released

On their sophomore album Crush the Sun, CARBON DECOY cranks up the intensity they harnessed on their debut up to eleven, delivering nine moody tracks that pulse with delicious chaos. True to form, CARBON DECOY utilizes the capriciousness of garage rock, a hazy acidic groove, and the crushing heft of stoner/doom in a raw and unfettered manner, creating mind-bending twists and turns amid powerfully relatable narratives.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

14. WITCHSNAKE – SATANAS / NEW!
3570 Points
Acid Doom, Stoner Rock, Heavy Psych
Milan, Italy
Self-released

Distortion drenched, fuzz soaked acidic doom and heavy psych driven by thunderous rhythms and enhanced with swirling Hendrixian guitar flourishes and husky Lemmy-esque vocal dynamics. “Satanas” is WITCHSNAKE‘s dirtiest, filthiest, nastiest collection of songs to date…..you will love it!
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

13. SKULLDOZER – HIGH TIDE / NEW!
3660 Points
Proto-Metal, Doom, Stoner Metal
Portland, Oregon, USA
Self-released

SKULLDOZER deliver everything any underground rock loving music fan could ever ask for with “High Tide“, the album is a virtual smorgasbord of crunching growling riffage and thunderous busy rhythms that is topped off with powerful distinctive vocals. Reviews and blurbs often close out with the recommendation “play loud”, this one though should be played LOUDER!
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

12. WYTCH HAZEL – V: LAMENTATIONS / NEW!
3696 Points
Hard Rock, Proto, Heavy Metal
Lancaster, UK
Bad Omen Records

After all the blood, sweat, and tears, the “Four White Apostles of BLACK SABBATH” have dropped their fifth album, V: Lamentations — laid straight at the devil’s own hairy hooves. WYTCH HAZEL’s sound is as rich as ever — a timeless blend of classic hard rock, folk-rock, and echoes of early ’80s proto-metal and mellow NWOBHM vibes. It brings back hazy memories of homely afternoons, Jethro Tull and Iron Maiden blasting from giant speakers, mixing with the crunch of fish sticks and ketchup from my childhood plate. The lyrics run deep — poetic, biblical, philosophical — never preachy, always human. It’s a soul-soother, free of kitsch and holy water, but laced with slow-burning brimstone. It’s the kind of record that even the devil could put on if his soul was drowning in black tar.
~ Mel Lie (Sunday’s Heavy Tunes)

11. MATRA – MATRA IV / NEW!
3952 Points
Heavy Rock, Stoner, Psych
Milan, Italy
Self-released

MATRA rocks the house skillfully and with the utmost precision across the nine tracks on IV, pulling from a wide variety of influences. You will find a 70’s influence with proto-metal riffs, progressive elements with quirky time changes, and a few other genres under the heavy rock umbrella, including stoner rock, blues, and psych all making their presence known. The band themselves are energetic and proficient in their songwriting, knowing all about arrangement and the ever-important hook. Take this one for a spin and enjoy the heavy rocking and diverse listening experience of MATRA.
~ Jon McGough (Stoner Rock Army, Stoner HiVe, Outlaws Of The Sun)

10. WARCHIEF – TOIL & TROUBLE / NEW!
4905 Points
Experimental Rock, Progressive Rock
Finland
Argonauta Records

On their new album Toil & Trouble, Finnish experimental rock band WARCHIEF creates a powerfully soul-stirring sound. The band’s tone draws from stoner/doom, sludge, grunge, progressive, and alternative rock influences, used to create their expansive, flowing songs. However, each track has a light-as-air spirit that travels through powerful bursts of intensity and passion, communicated in a most authentic manner by vocals and instrumentals alike. While Toil & Trouble could easily be your go-to dreamy summer listen, it can also be immensely therapeutic.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

9. PSALM – IN DARKNESS… HAVE MERCY / NEW!
8334 Points
Doom, Proto
Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
Psalm Records

When a young band mentions Trouble as their key influence it gives me hope for doom and heavy underground music as a whole. This is where the Las Vegas trio PSALM is coming from. Three young dudes paying homage to the trad doom classics and nailing it on all four tracks of their new EP, In Darkness…Have Mercy. Do you like riffs? Do you like heavy, traditional and melodic doom? Well look no further than these three young lads from Sin City.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip, Rich & Turbo’s Heavy Half Hour)

8. ATOM JUICE – ATOM JUICE / NEW!
9248 Points
Psych, Prog
Warsaw, Poland
Heavy Psych Sounds

If you’re looking for an album with multiple layers to peel back, the new album from ATOM JUICE sure fits the criteria. The layers are immense, from the multiple vocals harmonizations that are reminiscent of The Beatles, to the vibrant, spacey guitars that seem to envelop the tracks with a blanket of psychedelia. Then there’s the progressive ingredient which finds the band shifting gears from a psych-filled section to a funkier or more blues-oriented part, with plenty of improvisations and glorious jams in between. Put your headphones on, blast the stereo, and enjoy this album layer by delightful layer.
~ Jon McGough (Stoner Rock Army, Stoner HiVe, Outlaws Of The Sun)

7. HIBERNAUT – OBSIDIAN EYE / NEW!
11448 Points
Stoner Metal, Progressive, Sludge
Salt Lake City, Utah, USA
Olde Magick Records

HIBERNAUT‘s sophomore effort is one for the ages, folks. Obsidian Eye may very well be the finest showing from the sub-sub-genre of stoner metal I’ve been graced to hear thus far in 2025. HIBERNAUT has achieved a beautiful symmetry on Obsidian Eye – taking equal parts High on Fire and Mastodon, adding a dash of old school death metal fury, and rolling the whole thing in a blunt wrap fit to throw Al Cisneros in a state of catatonia. The sheer weight of these riffs manifested as physical weight pressing in on the my psyche, wrapping my mind in a cacoon of sheer serenity. Obsidian Eye – while aggressive as pit of starved lions – has a tranquilizing effect much in the way of a Sunn O)))) or Earth album. The fact that HIBERNAUT is able to achieve this effect while maintaining so much heavy metal fury is a testament to their ability as songwriters. Obsidian Eye is one of the year’s finest from any genre!
~ Jacob ‘Reverend Fuzzcut’ Baker (CleanAndSoberStoner, Monster Riff)

6. SEEDY JEEZUS – DAMNED TO THE DEPTHS / NEW!
12046 Points
Progressive, Stoner, Acid, Psychedelic
Melbourne, Australia
Label Brown Music / Lay Bare Recordings / Echodelick Records

SEEDY JEEZUS is a stoner rock band that formed in 2010.  However, Tony Reed (Mos Generator/Big Scenic Nowhere/Pentagram) recently joined and has steered the band into a more prog-like direction.  But don’t worry.  After listening to their third album, Damned to the Depths, I can assure you this is not a bad thing. This record, which centers around death and mourning, has the ability to sink deep into one’s subconscious.  The whole album is unique but also contains comfortable familiarity for any fan of classic rock music, meaning each song has its own character and personality while, at the same time, paying homage to classic rock tracks of the past.  For example, it’s hard to listen to opening tracks “Is There All That is” and “Golden Miles” without thinking of Pink Floyd’s “Young Lust” and the funkier parts of “Shine on you Crazy Diamond”.  The atmospheric “The Hollow Earth” obviously pays homage to Black Sabbath’s “Planted Caravan” while containing crunchy guitars that swirl in and out of tribal percussion and haunting flute playing by guest artist Kasinda Faase.   The seven part “Morning Sea” on the back half contains everything one would want in a prog rock epic: great vocals, moody sections, spacey passages, blistering guitar solos, voiceovers and creepy narration.   Be assured, if this album was released in 1975 we might be looking back on it as a 1970’s prog rock masterpiece.
~ Jamie Laszlo (Sea of Tranquility)

5. FOOT – THE HAMMER / NEW!
12320 Points
Rock, Grunge, Psych, Stoner
Melbourne, Australia
Copper Feast Records

FOOT is the type of band that just brings a sense of calming, there’s a sense of peace, even of nostalgia. Having been around the scene for years they have a confident display and knowledge of the moods and atmospheres they create. There is a purposeful meaning to the process, and the results show in their catalogue as well as on The Hammer. Spearheaded by the enchanting vocals that incorporate luscious harmonies and guitars that have a nineties grunge aspect, FOOT even adds a psych element further building on the ambience of the songs. If their originals don’t reflect enough nostalgia for you, then the cover of Sex and Candy should certainly take you back in time.
~ Jon McGough (Stoner Rock Army, Stoner HiVe, Outlaws Of The Sun)

4. HEBI KATANA – IMPERFECTION / NEW!
12949 Points
Doom, Proto, Hard Rock
Tokyo, Japan
Ripple Music

Imperfection is the fourth full-length album and Ripple Music debut from Japanese samurai doom trio HEBI KATANA. Lyrically, this highly anticipated release is inspired by “wabi sabi” and “enzo”, significant concepts in Zen Buddhism. Tonally, Imperfection has a slightly crisper sound and a heightened emotional expression compared to the band’s previous albums, marked by sharp contrasts in which placid interludes often give way to intense vocal and instrumental surges. While Imperfection is arguably HEBI KATANA‘S most eloquent and sophisticated release to date, the band’s trademark blend of doom and proto-hard rock are still very much in place, creating a listening experience as well-rounded as it is moving.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

3. GAUPA – FYR / NEW!
15884 Points
Stoner, Psychedelic Rock, Progressive Rock
Falun, Sweden
Nuclear Blast Records

It is a pleasure for me to introduce a new release from the Swedish band GAUPA for my first contribution to DC. I have been a fan ever since I discovered them a few years ago, and their progressive stoner music has never disappointed. And this new four-track EP is no exception — it’s a distillation of what they do best  – in fact, it’s exactly what they always do. Their music is a wonderful universe into which I immerse myself with delight as soon as I press “play”.  In this magical world, there’s a nymph called Emma Näslund who rules over some ethereal and delicate naiads. She swirls around us, and we float with her, totally captivated by her voice. The magic ends at the end of the fourth track, as we return to reality, feeling peaceful! It’s a journey that will leave no one indifferent.
~ Jay Baner (La Capsule Stoner)

2. SHEEV – ATE’S ALCHEMIST / NEW!
23112 Points
Progressive Doom, Progressive Metal
Berlin, Germany
Ripple Music

Ate’s Alchemist is a tough album to sum up in a short paragraph simply because there’s so many small nuances serving to shape the substance of the whole of the offering on display. On any given track, analytical listening will unveil small overtones contributing to the overall atmosphere of mystique conjured by these three musical geniuses. As a man with deep-rooted punk rock ethos, I’m more critical with prog than any other genre (by a country mile!), however I’m finding nothing whatsoever to pick apart here on Ate’s Alchemist. This is PRECISELY the type of album I’ve felt progressive stoner music has needed to serve as a shot of adrenaline strait into the chest cavity. I’m completley floored, and hope other bands take note. If you, dear reader, are the type of listener always on the hunt for original, unique music – whether compositionally or from a sound production standpoint – you are going to find a lot to love on Ate’s Alchemist.
~ Jacob ‘Reverend Fuzzcut’ Baker (CleanAndSoberStoner, Monster Riff)

1. MARGARITA WITCH CULT – STRUNG OUT IN HELL / NEW!
26628 Points
Proto, Stoner, Doom
Birmingham, UK
Heavy Psych Sounds

Birmingham, UK band MARGARITA WITCH CULT had one of the surprise debuts of 2023; their universally loved self-titled record was a 30-minute blast of catchy and evil proto goodness.  Record number two, Strung Out In Hell, maintains their great understanding of melody, ability to create earworms, and killer proto metal stylings from their first record while expanding the listener’s experience, incorporating other styles (Unsane and Helmet vibes on Dig Your Way Out for example) and just flat out ripping it up. Plus, you know a band is killer when they can do an un-cringy Billy Idol cover.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip, Rich & Turbo’s Heavy Half Hour)

The English stoner band based in Birmingham, home of Black Sabbath, is back with his second album. Three years after the self title record, MARGARITA WITCH CULT are faithful and close to their sound, which is a modern and faster version of Sabbath riffs. Loud, raw, and melodic, Strung Out In Hell is a very good surprise with a furious and intense rock n roll energy. You’ll never get bored because each song is a gem. Cherry on the sunday : a cover of Billy Idol’s White Wedding classic song… in a heavier way of course!  In “The Fool”, you will even find some trumpet! Sludge, proto metal mixed altogether with psychedelic and doom elements, that’s the tasty recipe that the three amigos will offer you. The record is fresh and original and I really enjoy every note of their unique sound. Strung Out In Hell will be on my top rated albums of 2025, that’s for sure…
~ Édouard Dubuisson (Les chroniques d’Eddy, MetalUniverse)

“‘Tell me, Mr Osbourne,’ I’d be asked by Robin Day on the BBC, ‘when you were growing up in Aston, did you ever think that a simple advert in a music shop window would lead to you becoming the fifth member of the Beatles, and your sister Iris getting married to Paul McCartney?’ And I’d answer, ‘Never in a million years, Robin, never in a million years.’ It was a fucking awesome ad…”

  1. You guys overlooked Low Demon by Stomach. Also, considering Hell is ranked at 17 while Margarita Witch Cult holds the top spot, it might be worth rethinking the name of this blog to better reflect its perspective. Stoner and psychedelic rock seem consistently overrepresented, which doesn’t fully capture the broader scope of heavy music.

    1. Stomach got a decent amount of votes and reached 150 of the 194 albums that received votes…

And indeed, the blackened doom sludge present on Low Demon is damn smashing!

And Doom Charts is the name our founder Lucas came up with… And we’re sticking with it…
