DOOM CHARTS – AUGUST 2024

Doom Charts is the one thing we’re capable of perceiving that transcends dimensions of time and space…

~ Dr Brand in Interstellar (probable misheard quote)

Oh yeah, you are right! That misheard quote might have been about love. A thing that truly might be the most important thing humans have got going for them. It is one of the emotions that drives us. Drives us to create. To create art. So it boggles the mind that there is such a thing as AI Art. Or AI Music. It has nothing to do with creating. With putting into writing, drawing or music that feeling you wanted to capture, those memories you want to show, the pain, the hurt, the longing, the love. There is of course no such thing yet as Artificial Intelligence or Artificial Intelligence Art/Music. It’s algorithms and a programmed database or search engine. Combining, twisting, re-using what has been made before. No intelligent thought is present at any time. And no emotion. No love. And for now, most of the (lets keep calling it AI music for now) is still discernable and identifiable as such. But the programs will get better and it will become more difficult. As Doom Charts we have no desire to promote AI Music. And yes we know, one day, an album will slip through the cracks and get mentioned. But why, I ask, would you go through the trouble of letting a program conjure up something like that? There is no emotion present whatsoever. We can’t hear what the artists went through to create their music. To share their thoughts. Their emotions. Their love. Is there anything to gain from entering a few words into an AI Music program? Especially in our loving little Heavy Underground niche…

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

25. SOLEMN CEREMONY – CHAPTER III / NEW!
780 Points
Doom Metal, Traditional doom, Melodic doom
Australia
Self-released

SOLEMN CEREMONY plays a brand of doom that is traditional in nature and, when the need arises, melodic.  With that being said, it has more than enough thick riffage and a powerful rhythm section. Musically, nothing here is extreme but it rocks pretty damn hard for what it is and is a lot heavier than a lot of other traditional doom bands.  Vocally, Phil’s voice is clean but very gritty, often ending sentences with something close to a growl.  I find his style very fitting for the music, which is more gritty and rough than a lot of traditional doom. The production matches that raw power; it isn’t often I heard music of this style with such an abrasive production but it works with the music. SOLEMN CEREMONY’s “Chapter III” is a surprisingly raw traditional doom metal album with a dark, graven image which emanates from its bleak but huge sound.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

24. EARTH SHIP – SOAR / NEW!
852 Points
Progressive Sludge
Berlin, Germany
The Lasting Dose Records

German heavyweights EARTH SHIP unleash a genre-bending blend of doom, sludge, and progressive metal on their sixth studio release. Bone-rattling riffs and vicious vocals reign, but there’s plenty of room for intricate passages, a touch of psychedelic, and even some smokey blues on this record. Raw and powerful, with depth and texture, Soar is truly an immersive listening experience.
~ Mitch Kline (DoomyRiffs.com)

23. TEMPLE WITCH – OCEAN THOUSAND, MOUNTAIN THOUSAND / NEW!
890 Points
Doom, Post Rock
Kent, Ohio
WormHoleDeath Records

Not on Bandcamp

TEMPLE WITCH is a doom trio out of Ohio who came on the scene back in 2021 with the great debut album, Hand In Hand With Chaos. The band is now back with album number two, the even better Ocean Thousand, Mountain Thousand, delivered to us by their new label, WormHoleDeath Records. Ocean Thousand, Mountain Thousand sounds bigger and fuller, showing some serious maturity as a band, even with a new drummer in the fold. A nice step forward for a band that showed a ton of promise on their debut. Heavy doom with traces of post rock, AIC, and Unsane on quaaludes, Ocean Thousand, Mountain Thousand is some seriously big and epic doom goodness.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

22. NORNA – NORNA / NEW!
912 Points
Sludge, Post-noise, Metal
Sweden & Switzerland
Pelagic Records

The soul crushing, three piece Juggernaut that is NORNA are back with their self titled, sophomore album and what a masterpiece in atmospherically dense, devastatingly vile destruction it is. With their 2022 debut being nothing short of harrowingly heavy and as undeniably brutal as it was blindingly beautiful, huge expectations were set for this new release which not only surpasses in every way, but carries that tumultuous torch ever deeper into their special brand of pure, thunderous hell, bringing a new and magnificently heigtened level of hypnotic, lurching horror to their catastrophically sludgy proceedings. ‘Norna’ provides six tracks of endlessly extereme, viscerally raw and forboding metallic danger and is a limitlessly grand expression of searing, ambient rage. Amidst the cataclysmic din of virulent, creeping peril is an exquisite noblesse and these legendary musicians have come together once again to create yet another essential album for those who seek redemption by way of the eternally cataclysmic and punishingly relentless noise of the oft hidden depths, light and dark of the human soul. 11/10.
~ The Doom Oracle (Spectral Ecstacy)

21. THE PATH – SHADOW HELIX / NEW!
938 Points
Doom, Metal, Stoner
Tampa, Florida, USA
Self-released

Tampa outfit THE PATH are back with their sophomore effort (and first full length) of relentless genre-bending. Some of the references are obvious, like the ghost of Neurosis guiding the whole procedure. Or the My Dying Bride vibe in ‘Breathless’. Yet they are far removed from being a rip-off. The woven tapestry of low-end doom and stoner grooves together with contrasting higher-pitched lead guitar lines, more open, contemplative passages and an on occasion semi-spoken, but mostly growling, guttural vocal delivery creates a colour palette all its own. One that’s at the same time blunt and subtle, loud and quiet, friend and foe. A bewitching listening experience that shows THE PATH have taken u huge step forward since their self-titled debut ep back in 2019. They aren’t about to destroy you with one big sudden blast, but what they will do is slowly lure you into their own private darkness. One where the shadow helix roams.
~ Ronny Dijksterhuis (Stoner HiVe)

20. BONZAI – NIGHTMARE ALWAYS ENDS THE DAWN / NEW!
1144 Points
Hard Rock, Stoner, Alt-Metal
Thessaloniki, Greece
Self-released

Intriguing mixture of grunginess, fuzziness and hard rocking swagger, a band with their own unique signature sound is a rarity these days but these guys have that and are not afraid to use it.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

19. KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD – FLIGHT B741 / NEW!
1146 Points
Classic Rock, Glam Rock, Blues Rock
Melbourne, Australia
P(doom) Records

The shapeshifting maniacs are back for album 26 and have released one of their best. Flight b741 has been my album of the summer, loaded with some of the most feel good music I’ve heard for ages. Catchy melodies, raging harmonica, it’s really hard not to have a good time and boogie down with this record. Having seen the band live in May, I’ve been obsessed, and the band just keep making brilliant moves. If you want to dive into the Gizzverse, they are live streaming all their current tour dates (for FREE!!) on their YouTube channel, and even uploading some as NYP downloads over on their 2nd bandcamp page, bootleg gizzard. The best band around right now, hopefully they’ll take a shot at a stoner doom album in the future!
~ Jonny Pirie (Hour of the Riff)

18. QUINTANA – THE TRAVELER / NEW!
1416 Points
Stoner, Desert, Hardrock
Ada, Ohio, USA
Self-released

Mississippi Bones guitarist Dusty puts out stellar solo project. Maybe a drop more stoner or desert than Miss Bones usual stuff, this is a great album. Great songs and some fine guitar work from a talented musician. A must hear. I was hooked immediately.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)

17. EYES OF THE OAK – NEOLITHIC FLINT DAGGER / NEW!
1644 Points
Metal, Doom, Psych, Stoner
Södermanland County, Sweden
Self-released

Their doom tinted metal has a touch of lo-fi, making it all the other elements they infuse gritty and grimy. Progressively indentured, there are moments they move towards stoner and psych, but always with an atmospheric and broad arc. Vocals opting for mysterious and enigmatic one moment and then for grand gestures and blazing the next. The seven tracks, and thirty seconds outro of Neolithic Flint Dagger are rife with enchanting moments, it’s magic turning you into a follower of these four Sweden. And the EYES OF THE OAK will follow you everywhere…
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)

16. KUROKUMA – OF AMBER AND SAND / NEW!
2040 Points
Metal, Sludge, Heavy Psych, Middle Eastern
Sheffield, UK
Self-released

KUROKUMA‘s 2nd full length album, Of Amber and Sand, was conceptualized around the theme of time and charts how early civilizations began using time measuring devices, becoming slaves to the clock, and ultimately leading to how we deal with our own mortality. KUROKUMA have never shied away from experimentation, utilising an incredible diversity of styles and genres of heavy music, which makes them one of the most fascinating bands around in my opinion. Citing influences such as Korn, System Of A Down and middle eastern Dabke music in the writing of this album, KUROKUMA have produced a collection of songs that are heavy af but also have an incredible groove to them. Immerse yourself in this amazing record, it will be time well spent.
~ Bob “Mr. Weird Beard” Baker (More Fuzz Podcast)

15. WALL – BRICK BY BRICK / NEW!
2172 Points
Stoner, Sludge
Oxford, UK
APF Records

The long awaited debut album from WALL is stuffed to the gills with the huge riffs and punishing drums that only the Cole brothers can deliver. The licks are mind-melting and the kitwork is pure thunder. What makes WALL one-of-a-kind, however, is how truly expressive both instruments are. The dynamism and finesse of the Coles makes for sonic storytelling that’s as engaging and nuanced as any vocalist, and from the first notes you know without a doubt who’s playing. This is a special band.
~ Kyle SB (Good Boy PR, Stoner HiVe)

14. DEMON & ELEVEN CHILDREN – DEMONIC FASCINATION / NEW!
2574 Points
Doom, Evil Blues
Guangzhou, China
SloomWeep Productions

I’ve been following China’s DEMON & ELEVEN CHILDREN (named for one of the greatest slabs of early 70s heavy blues in existence) since their Demon Daze demo last year.  I’m pleased to report that their debut full-length, Demonic Fascination, more than lives up to expectations.  Swirling sultry vocals with sleazy, distorted blues, the band’s musical mix of sex and violence recalls Church of Misery as much as it does Blues Creation.  These sounds would falter in the hands of a band less skilled… they’re working with a significant amount of lo-fi atmosphere… but DEMON & ELEVEN CHILDREN deftly wield them to create a memorable record which serves notice to the rest of the heavy underground. Be forewarned!
~ Ben Bellum (The Greatest Thing You’ve Never Heard)

13. BARBARIAN HERMIT – MEAN SUGAR / NEW!
3164 Points
Stoner Metal,Stoner Doom
Manchester, UK
APF Records

BARBARIAN HERMIT, the stoner doom heavyweights from Manchester, United Kingdom, deliver a raw and unrelenting experience with their new album Mean Sugar. It’s a crushingly heavy record, with crafty interludes that add surprising nuance. This release establishes BARBARIAN HERMIT as the true kings of the North.
~ Michael D’Amato (Playgroundz Rocks, D’Amato Production)

12. HAIL DARKNESS – DEATH DIVINE / NEW!
5700 Points
Occult Rock, Doom, Psych
Phoenix, AZ
Vatican Records

When I see tags like occult rock, psychedelic, and doom you bet I am going to be grabbing that to dive into. When I start to play it and it sounds like it was recorded in a shed in the forest in 1975, has spooky doom vibes, and female vocals that send a chill up and down your spine, you know this is something I am going to be screaming about for a while.  This is exactly what you get with the debut album from Phoenix, Arizona’s HAIL DARKNESS, Death Divine. Even with this band being from Phoenix, there is nothing warm about HAIL DARKNESS or the ten tracks that make up the record. In fact, I had to confirm that their location was correct, as this sounds way too cold, dark, and evil not to be from some remote European village, but alas, here we are, and boy am I here for it. The witch’s coven vibes, the hauntingly evil and sexy vocals, all of the tempo changes, the fuzzy retro-ness of it all, the heavy and light aspects, and a million extra points for the album cover, HAIL DARKNESS has a winner with their debut record.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

11. THUNDERBIRD DIVINE – LITTLE WARS / NEW!
5920 Points
Stoner, Psych, Doom
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
Black Doomba Records

The new record from Philadelphia rock veterans THUNDERBIRD DIVINE took me a few listens to grab onto, but when I did, I held on tight. The band mentions Monster Magnet, Hawkwind, Flower Travellin’ Band, The MC5 and Grand Funk Railroad in their bio (I would throw The Doors and Deep Purple in there too), so with that kind of musical taste how could they go wrong? Well, they could, given how bands have a habit of putting names and tags that don’t always paint the full picture, but rest assured, THUNDERBIRD DIVINE is the real deal, and their new record, Little Wars, pushes all the right buttons for me. You get all sorts of riffs, heavy-ass psych that would make Dave Wyndorf proud, and keys that take you from Del Dettmar to Jon Lord and back. What more could you possibly want from nine tracks that exist to melt your mind?
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

10. DELVING – ALL PATHS DIVERGE / NEW!
7605 Points
Progressive, Krautrock
Berlin, Germany
Blues Funeral Recordings

As an introduction to this style of music, All Paths Diverge is as close to perfect as I’ve ever heard. Even more remarkable is that Nick played all of the instruments, with the exception of some tasty keyboard and piano work by Fabien de Menou. Of course, I’d listen to Michael Risberg if he played for Cold Play or Katy Perry. His presence sweetened the deal. So, yes, BUY THIS if you have the money. Borrow some if you don’t. And if you have to stream it, for gawdsake listen to the whole thing before you decide if you like it or not. This is an actual album: an experience meant to be taken in all at once. I highly recommend that you do…
~ Scott Spiers (CleanAndSoberStoner, Monster Riff)

9. SIDEWINDER – TALONS / NEW!
7714 Points
Stoner Rock, Heavy Blues,
Wellington, New Zealand
Self-released

It would be easy to fill this blurb with superlatives regarding the quality of this album but space is at a premium so lets just say that this is truly remarkable heavy blues fronted by a singer of rare talent backed by musicians who have a real understanding of the genre.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

8. ANCIIENTS – BEYOND THE REACH OF THE SUN / NEW!
7994 Points
Prog-Metal, Doom, Sludge, Blackened Metal
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Season of Mist

If you are a fan of bands like DVNE, Mastodon and Huntsmen and have fond memories of growly period Opeth then ANCIIENTSBeyond The Reach Of The Sun“, a masterful blending of blackened metal and intricate prog, is the album you need in your life. It has been nine long years since these guys scrambled our brains with the excellent “Voice of the Void”, and there were many of us who wondered if we would ever hear from them again, but they are back with an album that could well be considered their finest moment yet, a mind-frying mix of heaviness and lanquidity that is more than worthy of all the love and respect that will undoubtedly come its way.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

7. COBRANOID – COBRANOID / NEW!
12888 Points
Thrash Metal, Doom Metal, Heavy Metal
Denver, Colorado, USA
Self-released

Prepare for monster surges of aggressively heavy rock as COBRANOID rolls over your family picnic with full throttle, cut throat, riff after riff. What are we doing here? Getting this party started! That’s what. With a clean vocal settled in nicely and surging over the massive wall of sound this band generates, it’s easy to feel the spirit of heavy rock and roll surging in their veins. This is a no apology attack on someone’s quiet evening. Who could resist it? The neighborhood probably needed to hear this one anyway. I can see old men waving canes wildly as hooligan kids use their driveway for extra speed. They launch from home made ramps and their parents across the street are cracking open ice cold bottles with friends. Everyone having the time of their lives and the entire party is cheering the children with encouragement!
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin, Inherent Records, Mystery Pick)

6. ERRONAUT – THE SPACE INBETWEEN / NEW!
13752 Points
Grunge, Doom, Space, Post Rock
England, UK
London Doom Collective

Another excellent debut record in a year with a whole bunch of them, ERRONAUT has made a huge splash with The Space Inbetween. My only real complaint is the spelling of the title, as Inbetween is making my spell check go crazy, but other than that, this record is chock full of heavy riffs, excellent grungy heavy slow burns, and some serious space via post rock to combine together to create what will be one of the debut records of the year.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

5. EMU – EMU / NEW!
18040 Points
70’s, Retro, Psych, Blues, Classic Rock
Sunshine Coast, Australia
No Groove No Good Records

Killer self-titled debut here from the jamming, proto metal, power trio, EMU.  Unlike the birds that are their namesake, EMU takes flight early and often; providing the kind of free-wheeling heavy rock fun that made the late 60s and early 70s the most significant era in heavy rock history.  Of course, there will be a well-earned tendency to compare EMU to their countrymen in Seedy Jeezus, but they’ve got just as much in common with that band’s collaborators in Earthless… effectively blending San Diego psych sounds with Australian boogie.  It’s a rare treat these days for a band to come out the chute fully formed and firing on all cylinders, but that’s exactly what EMU manages to achieve here.
~ Ben Bellum (The Greatest Thing You’ve Never Heard)

4. VALLEY OF THE SUN – QUINTESSENCE / NEW!
18543 Points
Stoner Rock, Desert Rock, Rock
Cincinnati, Ohio
Self-released

Rarely do bands make it this far in their careers, let alone with the consistency of high-quality releases that VALLEY OF THE SUN have been able to do in theirs. You could easily pick up any of their albums and introduce them to someone for the first time and they would be surprised they had never heard of them before. They have a high standard of excellence they always seem to live up to, Quintessence being no exception. It’s surreal that the first day of recording was during the total eclipse that North America experienced back in April, which made for the perfect inspiration behind the album. Quintessence takes you on a vast journey across the far reaches of the solar system, spouting fuzzy riffs like coronal mass injections, luminous lead guitar, soaring vocals that release gamma-ray intensity, and tight rhythms that are locked in like the twin dance of the earth and moon. Not only does the album have the stoner/desert sounds we’ve come to expect from VALLEY OF THE SUN, but there are also the more thoughtful and dreamy tunes such as ‘Where’s This Place?’ and ‘Palus Somni’ that brings a little more dimension to the album. Don’t be discouraged as there are plenty of rockers on the album as well, ‘Graviton’, ‘Theia’, and the title track ‘Quintessence’ are all stand out tracks in their own rights. I feel like even these heavier songs themselves have more depth and meaning while still maintaining their hard rock qualities. VALLEY OF THE SUN adds to their already impressive catalog with Quintessence and it’s one that you’ll want to pick up and add to your collection!
~ Jon McGough (Stoner Rock Army, Stoner HiVe, Outlaws Of The Sun)

3. FOSTERMOTHER – ECHO MANOR / NEW!
18600 Points
Heavy Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Metal
Houston, Texas
Ripple Music

Houston’s FOSTERMOTHER returns with Echo Manor, and album that keeps haunting me to listen more. This album delivers an exceptional experience in doom-laden, heavy psychedelic, and sludgy stoner rock and metal. Prepare to be captivated by this new release. The ghostly whispers keep calling, “You think you would? could? you?”
~ Michael D’Amato (Playgroundz Rocks, D’Amato Production)

2. MAMMOTH VOLUME – RAISED UP BY WITCHES / NEW!
22025 Points
Experimental Rock, Progressive Rock
Lysekil, Sweden
Blues Funeral Recordings

While thought-provoking words and sounds are par for the course when it comes to progressive rock such as that created by MAMMOTH VOLUME, I greatly appreciate this band’s refreshing  take on the genre. MAMMOTH VOLUME combines 70s prog and stoner rock, a fusion that, while often airy, soothing, and whimsical, delivers some weightier moments in all the right spots. The sepia-tinted retro sound works together with lovely vocals and harmonies, immersive storytelling, clever instrumental progressions, and a varied but flowing composition to provide a cozy but entrancing listen. Raised Up By Witches plays out a bit like a dream, and it’s one you’ll want to get lost in more than once.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

1. FREE RIDE – ACIDO Y PUTO / NEW!
23600 Points
Stoner, Psych, Garage, Grunge, Surf
Madrid, Spain
Small Stone Records

Spain really has an incredible and vastly underrated underground music scene, producing some very talented acts including Saturna, Green Desert Water, Arenna, and Wet Cactus. FREE RIDE is another phenomenal Spanish band who got their start playing generator parties on the outskirts of Madrid, and they’ve been releasing some out-of-this-world psychedelic stoner rock since about 2018. Influenced by the music of the 70s as well as early stoner and punk rock, the band vastly expands upon their repertoire on Acido Y Puto, their newest release. This album features not only a well-utilized surf rock influence, but it also delivers strong doses of garage, grunge, alternative, and psychedelic rock in and around the heavier stoner tracks, making it the perfect soundtrack for the end of summer. Furthermore, those early stoner rock influences really shine through, providing a sense of feel-good nostalgia as you listen.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

FREE RIDE has mastered the art of balance with its sonic exploration into the human psyche, carefully extracting the inner dark side of the soul, tapping into a little light of hope where our cleaner and purer thoughts are met with dirty resistance. In this journey, the prettier things get, the fuzzier they become. Balance is everything, and FREE RIDE has the formula. Perhaps we all need some more Acido Y Puto.
~ Michael D’Amato (Playgroundz Rocks, D’Amato Production)

From the fantastic opening track of the new FREE RIDE’s album, I do enjoy the blend of calm skies with stormy clouds – I mean, the mix of psych acoustic passages with heavy electric stoner. This observation sums up Acido Y Puto which is in perfect balance between delicacy and power. My ears go from one surprise to another, from a long desert jam to a crushing riff. For almost an hour, FREE RIDE have an absolute mastery of form and atmospheres. This new full length album by the Spanish trio is total pleasure!
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T“ François (Metal Intégral)

FREE RIDE are a heavy psych/stoner hybrid that’s half Sativa and half Indica, sprinkled with 70’s rock influences and acid guitar. From the slow burner ‘Space Nomad’ to the more upbeat ‘Living For Today’ and all points in between they’ve constructed a power house album full of skill and finesse with Acido Y Puto. It’s one of those albums that just gets better as it progresses and even better after every listen, almost as if it takes your mind a moment to catch up to all the explosive lead guitar parts and cosmic surroundings. The forementioned ‘Space Nomad’ gives off a major 90’s stoner rock feel to it reminiscent of Kyuss, with eight plus minutes of righteous dune riding and space tripping to welcome you into Acido Y Puto. The track is relaxing and engaging and I’d imagine combined with the right medicine may induce a heavy couch-lock situation as you’re carried along with the congas, spaced-out vocals, and the wah dominated guitar. Another favorite of mine, the instrumental ‘Kosmik Swell’ continues the zoned-out feel with a great bass line and a much bluesier guitar, filling your daydreams with far off planetary journeys from underneath the haze. FREE RIDE caused quite a stir here at the Doom Charts when we got our hands on this and the entire heavy underground has seemed to have followed suit, its well-deserved attention as Acido Y Puto is an excellent album and is more than worthy of the recognition.
~ Jon McGough (Stoner Rock Army, Stoner HiVe, Outlaws Of The Sun)
