Gotta strike while the iron is hot! And this new album is entirely on fire! The next Friday Freebie comes from the forges within the Mountains of East Tennessee, it’s the new REVIVAL by WYNDRIDER! Released only a month and three weeks ago, it made an early appearance on the May Peroration because Justin Wittenmeier was so smitten with it! And it logically jumped into the Top 10 of the June Doom Charts cause all the other Contributors can’t stop listening to it either. Out on Electric Valley Records this is one smoking album!
Or as Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal) wrote on that May Peroration post: “WYNDRIDER is a doom metal band from East Tennessee who formed in 2022. Although I didn’t review it, I did greatly enjoy their self-titled debut album. Excitement was high when I received this promo especially since I also live in Tennessee (middle) and find it incredibly exciting to have such a great doom band from this state which all too often is only known for country music. The band’s sound is definitely rooted in stoner and psychedelic tendencies. The music is, of course, crushing with thick bass, big riffs, and stalwart drums. The vocals are absolutely excellent–emotive but with a much needed hazy, smokey, tone. The atmosphere and production compliment each other and are incredible–there is a veil of mysterium throughout the album, a certain tinge of the occult that plays well into their blues infused doom worship. In essence, Revival has a huge sound and expansive feel to it but retains a sense of horror and uneasiness, at least to a degree. Ultimately, as we approach the halfway point of the year, WYNDRIDER and their Revival comes in and makes a hell of a statement for the power of the genre in 2024. As far as this style of doom goes, I’ve heard very little this year that can compete with this.”
And Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin) added on the June Doom Charts: “Revival by WyndRider blends slow, southern charm into their own brand of bluesy, stoner rock. Loud, fuzzy amps rumble from the hills of Tennessee straight into your stereo as WyndRider unveil their newest release, Revival. Step forward and be blessed by the riff. This awakening services the almighty music gods of stoner jams and desert dwellers. The production is solid and clean vocals drift seductively over pharaonic songwriting. It is powerful in all of the best ways. Smoke slowly rolls in as this revival begins and all who are in attendance shall feel the fire.”
Scott Spiers (CleanAndSoberStoner) wrote: “Revival goes way, way beyond the trendy Occult Doom of the 2020’s (which I love, btw.) This is fiercely biting cultural commentary, through metaphor. Without overthinking it, this is strong effing stuff that doesn’t pull any punches. Read into it what you will, but Chloe Gould (vocals) has some choice words for some people, and she is not to be fucked with.”
Their own words: “WyndRider is a four-piece, stoner doom band from the mountains of East Tennessee. For fans of Black Sabbath, Mountain, Sleep, Church of Misery, and Acid King, the group was founded in 2022 and has been labeled “one of the hardest working bands in the stoner doom community”. Their first self-titled album was released in March of 2023 and their second album, Revival, was released on June 7, 2024 via Electric Valley Records. This album, washed in the blood of its region, sheds light on the smoke and mirrors of life in the Bible Belt and provides a fix for those left craving more after the first dose that WyndRider brought to the scene. Revival has earned the slot of #9 on the June Doom Charts and is now available on all major music platforms. “
