DOOM CHARTS – APRIL 2024

“I heard they have some tasty DOOM CHARTS burgers…”

~ Jules (probably misheard quote from Pulp Fiction)

As we cruise into the month of May and feel the approaching summer, the sweet fragrance of outdoor festivals, we present to you the April Doom Charts. Those albums that were spun the most and loved the hardest. As usual, there are many more. And you might have found a different favorite album during the month of April. Do not hesitate to share those finds with us! Cause it might be our next favorite one as well. But below you will find the list of 40 albums that were voted for by the many Doom Charts Contributors. There are 197 albums on the total list and we haven’t seen a finish in points this close for the Numbers 1 and 2 for quite some time, I reckon. But all forty are as tasty as hell… Shit, all of them are like the cornerstone of any nutritious Heavy Underground breakfast…

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

25. YEAST MACHINE – SLEAZE / NEW!
1620 Points
Stoner Rock, Grunge
Tubingen, Germany
Tonzonen Records

When Tubingen’s grungy stoner rockers YEAST MACHINE announced in December 2023 that they would be releasing something “louder, fuzzier, wilder” this year, I wondered how they’d ever manage to top the unbridled emotion and authentic 90s grunge sound that we all came to love from the band’s first two EPs. As it turns out, the band rose above and beyond the call of duty. Not only does YEAST MACHINE continue to pull on our tattered heart strings with their relatable lyrics and passionate sound, but SLEAZE also gives us something to rock out to like no one is watching with danceable, groovy tracks layered among the typical “yeasty” tunes. The album itself delivers a powerful message about personal growth, developing confidence, and overcoming obstacles (including oneself).  If this band was holding anything back before, that’s all gone now. The proverbial plaster has been ripped off, and Yeast Machine bears their heart, giving us their strongest, most genuine performance yet. SLEAZE is like a raw nerve, an unhealed wound that’s been left to fester in a lot of darkness and neglect. The time has come to “rip it off” and talk (scream) about it. The healing will come after.
~ Stephanie Zalta (Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

24. GUENNA – PEAK OF JIN’ARRAH / NEW!
1683 Points
Progressive Rock, Stoner Rock
Sweden
The Sign Records

Heavy, fuzzy progressive rock with many other different elements sprinkled in and plenty of twists and turns making for an interesting and exciting listen. As their Bandcamp page says: best described by Nick Oliveri after a night that GUENNA opened for his band Stoner in Malmö, “GUENNA sound like if YES played heavy stoner music, with all the harmonies and stuff. and I mean the good part of YES! It’s fucking rad!” I gotta agree, it’s pretty fucking rad!
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)

23. KHIRKI – ΚΥΚΕΏΝΑΣ / NEW!
1816 Points
Hard rock, Rock, Metal, Folk
Athens, Greece
Venerate Industries

KHIRKI are really something special, so much talent and there are so many moving parts to this record. They go from a metal intro to a funky bass riff, followed by an acoustic guitar accompanied by tribal sounding percussion with vocal chants, all flawlessly achieved without missing a beat and this is just an example of one song! There’s a selection of other tools at their disposal including a clarinet part on one song, a violin on another, and a hauntingly delightful female vocal on the final track. Lead vocals are powerful and full of heart with lyrical themes of glory, will, and perseverance. I love the fourth track and without knowing a single word (it’s in Greek) it conveys the desired emotions to the Listener. Heavy at times, beautiful on others, and every piece in its place, KHIRKI deliver a colorful, complex, creative, and compelling album that is an absolute must have!
~ Jon McGough

22. UNDER THE SUN – THE BELL OF DOOM / NEW!
1827 Points
Heavy Rock, Proto Metal, Stoner Rock, Doom Metal
Athens, Greece
Sound Effect Records

Oh Yeah! Those two words have seldom sounded as sweet as they do in kicking off UNDER THE SUN’s triumphant debut longplayer. Revving up The Bell of Doom’s engine, this emphatic battle cry kickstarts a wild voyage hellbent on setting our souls ablaze plunging us down to the very depths of rock’n’roll’s glorious and fiery domain where we all belong; down here the Athens troupe revel in sinister odes a la the title track and ‘Going Down’ nor are they afraid to get their hands greasy as the likes of ‘Cry Out’ and ‘Know My Name’ burn motor oil by the barrel. Sure enough, there is plenty of versatility on this record to keep it from running on fumes, even as its surging electricity keeps us banging our heads long into the night, possessing us as the eponymous bell tolls for an eternity. If we are indeed doomed, then The Bell of Doom makes for a wicked way to go out in style.
~ JC Cansdale-Cook (The MotorFuzzin’ Ibex)

21. SUNFACE – CLOUD CASTLES / NEW!
2124 Points
Psychedelic Rock, Stoner Rock
Oslo, Norway
Apollon Records

CLOUD CASTLES is an immersive, sensory experience, brilliantly combining ethereal psychedelic rock with moments of stoner riffage peppered throughout. It’s what the feeling of filling your lungs with crisp fresh air or jumping carefree into a turquoise tropical pool sounds like. These atmospheres form gossamer clouds that float languidly alongside light and breezy vocals. However, it’s the almighty riff and a beautiful array of percussion from around the world that provide the tether that keeps these sonic landscapes grounded to the earth, ensuring that they never float away entirely.
~ Stephanie Zalta (Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

20. CANNABUS – OTHER SIDE / NEW!
2436 Points
Desert Rock, Psychedelic, Space rock
Welland, Ontario, Canada
Black Throne Productions

CANNABUS are back with their second EP in so many years. It’s comprised of two songs with vocals sandwiched between two instrumentals. The jams are where these dudes excel. James M. the guitarist goes off and takes the listener with him. I’d love to see this band perform live.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)

19. MELVINS – TARANTULA HEART / NEW!
2620 Points
Grunge, Sludge, Punk, Hard Rock
Aberdeen, Washington, USA
Ipecac Recordings

To say that the new MELVINS record is “quite possibly the band’s most unconventional, catchiest and imaginative work yet, continuing a legacy celebrated for its eccentric and extraordinary output” like the promo material for album number 32-ish, depending on how you are counting, says, is the definition of a bold statement, because unconventional, catchy and imaginative pretty much sums up the band who have been at it since the mid-1980s. Tarantula Heart, however, is pretty close to said quote, and not only that, it is my favorite MELVINS record since my favorite, A Senile Animal.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

18. WHITE DOG – DOUBLE DOG DARE / NEW!
2810 Points
Heavy psychedelic, retro rock, proto-metal
Austin, Texas, USA
Rise Above Records

Obvious Seventies vibes oozing out of every direction on this killer rockin’ album. With the classic sounding tracks, guitar parts and leads that could have been recorded decades ago… And those sweet backing vocals! I’d be surprised if there weren’t candles burning in the studio and they weren’t wearing bell bottoms when they crafted this very cool album.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)

17. THE COSMIC DEAD – INFINITE PEAKS / NEW!
2870 Points
Psychdedlia, Space Rock
Glasgow, UK
Heavy Psych Sounds

Glaswegian Psych/Space Rock outfit THE COSMIC DEAD return with a 2-track mammoth excursion into Time & Space with “Infinite Peaks“: A sprawling ebb and flow of lysergically-fuelled voyages into the vast miasma. Shifting as the sands of Mars, infusing like osmosis, “Infinite Peaks” sees THE COSMIC DEAD join the upper echelons of European Psychedelia alongside such illustrious company as Øresund Space Collective, Kanaan and Slift!
~ Stevie Reek (Howls from The Hollows, Doomed&StonedStoner HiVe)

16. KING OF NONE – IN THE REALM / NEW!
2912 Points
Stoner Rock, Heavy Rock, Desert Rock
Helsinki, Finland
Argonauta Records

If ‘Low’n’Slow’ does not find itself living in your car stereo rent free for all eternity you need a better car – one that can handle its immense horsepower! You’d be forgiven for believing In The Realm to be born from molten asphalt on a stretch of two-lane blacktop somewhere between Denver and Las Vegas, for so sunbaked is its lifeforce simply lurking in its periphery will fuel you up for several lifetimes. Alas, KING OF NONE hail from the land of a thousand lakes and have raised the banner for their scene for a decade now; such experience speaks volumes on their first outing since 2019’s Weightless Waters, embarking on an epic thrill ride imbued with such tremendous solar power the likes of ‘Thousand Light Year Stare’, ‘Snail Trail’ and ‘The Man Who Bought The Multiverse’ leave a blazing trail in their wake! These riffs are groovy as all hell, and the power behind Miiro Kärki’s voice can stand pillar to pillar with genre’s greats. So buckle up, for this speedster is about to go to Mars, dudes!
~ JC Cansdale-Cook (The MotorFuzzin’ Ibex)

15. RED MESA – PARTIAL DISTORTIONS / NEW!
3289 Points
Stoner Rock, Doom, Post Metal
Albuquerque, NM, USA
Desert Records / Majestic Mountain Records

Partial Distortions, RED MESA’s 4th full length, serves as my introduction to the band’s studio work after being impressed by their live performance last year. Effectively blending the desert soundscapes that their hometown evokes with rich and forlorn doom melancholia, the band is at their best when they lean in to the desolation in their sound as they often do here. Standout cuts include Dying in the Cold Sun, which would have fit neatly into the tracklist of Neurosis’ A Sun that Never Sets, and the album’s penultimate Desert March; the latter calling to mind the rolling musical sadness of Apostle of Solitude’s debut album which, FWIW, was my album of the decade for the aughts, so no faint praise.
~ Ben Bellum (The Greatest Thing You’ve Never Heard)

14. LIE HEAVY – BURN TO THE MOON / NEW!
3393 Points
Stoner, Hard Rock, Doom, Heavy Blues
Raleigh, North Carolina, USA
Heavy Psych Sounds

LIE HEAVY’s debut is so great to the point where soon we should stop saying Karl Agell, former lead singer of COC, to Karl Agell, singer in LIE HEAVY, because Burn To The Moon is how he makes his new mark on the scene. Burn To The Moon incorporates all the best parts of stoner, doom, and kick ass heavy rock, and even with some bluesy leanings.  Karl is the known name here, but the band is filled with killer veteran musicians from the Raleigh, North Carolina scene that totally bring it to this album that has whispers of his old band but brings so much more on their first offering.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

13. TAROT – GLIMPSE OF THE DAWN / NEW!
3732 Points
Seventies, Rock, Proto, Prog
Australia
Cruz Del Sur Music

When I see “70s inspired” in a review or bio I will go there before anywhere else.  I have been fooled and disappointed too many times by such descriptions, but my faith has been restored by the first album in eight years from Australian retro rockers TAROT, who very well may have a real working time machine, because be prepared to get transported back to that era when you experience Glimpse Of The Dawn. I’ll throw some 70s comparisons at you: Uriah Heep, Sabbath, Rainbow, early Styx, Deep Purple, the heavier side of Tull, 70s Yes, even bits of early Genesis, or some newer bands;  think the record from fellow Aussies Butterfly and their killer Doorways Of Time record from 2021 or maybe Wytch Hazel minus the Jesus. Glimpse Of The Dawn, however, is in a class of its own and is one of my favorite things I have listened to in years.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

12. LUCIFER GIANT – LUCIFER GIANT / NEW!
3920 Points
Doom, Stoner, Heavy Psych, Prog
Basel, Switzerland
Self-released

There are albums we listen to that although very good will, after a number of listens, get relegated to the back of our music collections only to be pulled out again when the mood takes us or we are reminded of them via conversation or social media, however there are OTHER albums that on just one spin we know we will be continuing to listen to until the Grim Reaper taps us on the forehead with his scythe, LUCIFER GIANT‘s debut is one of THOSE albums.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

11. CASTLE RAT – INTO THE REALM / NEW!
4740 Points
Doom, Heavy Rock
New York, US
King Volume Records

With a stunning album of kick-ass songs, a band of formidable musicians, a stage act for the ages, and the most charismatic lead singer this decade, this is now CASTLE RAT’s World. We just live in it. Time will tell if this is the classic I believe it is, and the follow-up will be more than just anticipated. The pressure will be enormous. But for now, CASTLE RAT simply rules the day.
~ Scott Spiers (CleanAndSoberStoner)

10. TEMPLE OF THE FUZZ WITCH – APOTHEOSIS / NEW!
5700 Points
Progressive Doom, Blackened Doom
Detroit, MI, USA
Ripple Music

On their third studio full length, Detroit power trio TEMPLE OF THE FUZZ WITCH have ascended to a completely different level. The band has shed the fuzzy, stoner haze of past albums, and replaced it with a sharp, raw intensity, making for a stunning dynamic shift in their sound. Noah Bruner’s impressive vocals range from ethereal to vicious snarl. Everything about this album hits hard. It’s slow and crushing. Dark and mesmerizing. And so menacing. One of the most intriguing metal albums of the year.
~ Mitch Kline (DoomyRiffs.com)

9. ELK WITCH – AZIMUTH / NEW!
6834 Points
Stoner, Doom, Psych
Medford, Oregon, USA
Majestic Mountain Records

I enjoyed their first release and on this one ElK WITCH definitely crank it up a notch. The sound is nice and clean without being too sterile or glossy at all. The tunes and riffage hit it nice and hard. They’ve expanded their sound a bit while remaining firmly in that classic Stoner/Doom style. This is a solid album as pretty much everything Majestic Mountain Records puts out is.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)

8. DVNE – VOIDKIND / NEW!
7184 Points
Doom, Sludge, Progressive Metal
Edinburgh, UK
Metal Blade Records

My God, what a board! The third album by the Scots DVNE literally overwhelms you. 60 minutes full of emotions, wonderfully proggy parts, meet relaxed, atmospheric moments, sometimes with sludge vocals, sometimes with clean vocals. The wall of sound almost overwhelms you and despite all the harshness, there are so many great melodies including catchy choruses to discover. With “Voidkind” the guys have perhaps released the album of the year and have just released numbers like ‘Eleonora’ (great loud and quiet playing with a wonderful middle part), ‘Pleroma’ (what a killer chorus) or the subsequent ‘Cobalt Sun Necropolis ‘ are even more fun under headphones. Anyone who counts Mastodon, Baroness or Tool among their favorites will love DVNE‘s third output – really, really great cinema!
~ Tom Schmahl (Rock Circuz)

7. HAUNTED – STARE AT NOTHING / NEW!
7344 Points
Doom, Occult, Stoner
Catania, Italy
Ripple Music

Italian band HAUNTED spooked us with their 2016 self-titled occult doom masterpiece that went way too under the radar for how hauntingly (I had to) good it is.  I completely missed their 2018 Dayburner album, but leave it to Ripple Music to bring HAUNTED back into the spotlight and give us the highly anticipated third HAUNTED record, Stare At Nothing, which takes the band’s brand of goodness consisting of ethereal vocals, low end atmospheric doom, and heavy but understated (in the best way) Sabbath/Candlemass type riffs to the next level. This is the definition of epic occult doom.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

6. HEAVY TEMPLE – GARDEN OF HEATHENS / NEW!
10274 Points
Doom, Metal
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
Magnetic Eye Records

There is heavy. And there is HEAVY TEMPLE. Of course, what makes a band heavy is very subjective. With that being said, it is hard to imagine anyone listening to this band’s second full-length album “Garden of Heathens,” and not thinking that the sounds they heard were the audio equivalent of molten lead being poured into their ears. The band is “just” a three piece but they bring more to the table than many bands that have double, or even triple, those numbers. The MVP of the album is no doubt High Priestess NightHawk, who provides both bass and vocals. That’s a hell of a name to call yourself but she’s a hell of a vocalist and bassist. Her instrumental prowess alone brings in a dimensional weight to their music that is as heavy as the gravitational pull of the sun. I’ve always been a straight up sucker for female vocals, especially in doom. Gender doesn’t matter but I’ll be damned if women don’t have an extra power over doom metal. There is just something about a powerful voice over liquid molten riffs that speaks to me. Doesn’t speak to you? Get some hearing aids. Everything about this album is basically perfect. There are riffs for days, courtesy of the unstoppable Christian Lopez. Add in the tight and energetic drums of Baron Lycan that are second to none and you get a great album that absolutely smokes. Doom doesn’t get much better than this.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

5. IRON BLANKET – ASTRAL WANDERER / NEW!
11844 Points
Fuzz, Psych, Proto Doom, Proto Metal, Seventies
Syndey, Australia
Copper Feast Records

The debut album from Australian desert heavy-psych is pure dynamite. Based on the wild sounds of 70’s proto-metal, the band develops its songs in a sound space in which troglodyte riffs hit hard among dense lysergic atmospheres. Without a doubt a slap in the face not for the weak of spirit. With the legacy of bands like Sabbath as well as the pioneers of proto-metal and proto-doom of the 70’s IRON BLANKET present us with a sound artifact of enormous dimensions in which the echoes of the desert are watered with psychotropic fluids that will make your head explode. Testing your cervical spine, their songs have a groovy vintage between hordes of Stoner riffs. That familiar sound seen before acquires a bombproof sensory dimension in this debut impact. The monolithic bunker in which their powerful riffs are created is just one of the hallmarks of the band, since there are many influences that appear in this work that will not give you a single break.
~ Roberto Lucas (Denpa Fuzz)

4. ROBOT GOD – PORTAL WITHIN / NEW!
12957 Points
Rock, Psych, Space, Stoner, Prog, Fuzz
Sydney, Australia
Kozmik Artifactz

With a unique combination of intricate melodies, ROBOT GOD explores elements of psychedelic rock and metal underpinned by stoner vocals of electrifying energy. With four long songs in which heavy psychedelia borders on high levels of brilliance, the trio knows how to conquer the listener with their fascinating use of Stoner and blues elements, incorporated into their sensational lysergic developments. Solid and heavy tracks in which psychotropic developments become entangled in authentic heavy-psych orgies that are difficult to resist. Making everything flow smoothly, each track contains twists that make its intensity oscillate in a fluid narrative. Its hazy atmospheres are nourished by a 70’s aroma that includes echoes of Hendrix, Pink Floyd and the eternal Sabbath, making them irresistible. Building monumental walls of sound ROBOT GOD do not limit themselves in their creativity, making their songs full of force gravitate over sandy dunes as well as cosmic dunes.
~ Roberto Lucas (Denpa Fuzz)

3. HIGH ON FIRE – COMETH THE STORM / NEW!
16566 Points
Stoner Metal, Sludge Metal
Oakland, California, USA
MNRK Heavy

HIGH ON FIRE needs no introduction. The band has been serving up their devastating sonic stew of apocalyptic metal for over twenty years now. On Cometh The Storm, the band’s ninth proper studio album, Matt Pike (for President), bassist Jeff Matz, and drummer Coady Willis, the latest addition to the band, sound as tight, inspired, and furious as ever. The noticeable Middle Eastern influence simmering amongst the trademark pummeling sonic assault, including the standout mid-set instrumental “Karanlik Yol” that follows the murky title track, makes this album worth at least one listen. But let’s face it, you’ll likely be back for more.
~ Mitch Kline (DoomyRiffs.com)

2. THE LUNAR EFFECT – SOUNDS OF GREEN & BLUE / NEW!
20171 Points
Stoner, Psych, Classic Hard Rock
London, England
Svart Records

THE LUNAR EFFECT is a million times more interesting than the actual solar eclipse that happened in parts of the US this month, and will have way more staying power and overall impact, as Sounds Of Blue And Green is a serious top 20 AOTY contender. This is a killer heavy and fuzzy stoner heavy blues mix with some elements of psych thrown in that is super catchy and uses keys extremely effectively and at times remind me of what Faith No More did on the track Edge Of The World, which gets immediate love from me. Sounds Of Blue and Green blocks out more than the sun, try the whole universe.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

1. ACID MAMMOTH – SUPERSONIC MEGAFAUNA COLLISION / NEW!
21392 Points
Doom, Metal, Stoner, Psych
Athens, Greece
Heavy Psych Sounds

The colossal doom machine ACID MAMMOTH has released its fourth album and what a masterpiece! Three years after Caravan, the four horsemen of classic doom inspired and infused with a Sabbatish sound are back with their typical signature musical universe. Crushing riffs, voice as deep and clear as Ozzy Osbourne period Master Of Reality album, slow tempo and divine heaviness… everything on that disc is epic and loud! In my humble opinion, this could be a serious contender to the Doom AOTY.
~ Edouard Dubuisson (Les chroniques d’Eddy)

There is something so reassuring and comforting about this warm wooly beast. You know how this animal will stomp. You know how the tusks will sway. Toned to a certain level of perfection ACID MAMMOTH is here to deliver that heady doom once again, that massive groove that will always and forever leave a mark upon your soul. But be warned SUPERSONIC MEGAFAUNA COLLISION is not the album that will make you forget about all those colossal hoofprints that came before… Nonetheless, you might be trampled by all the shaggy heaviness once more!
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)

The Greek hairy pachyderm returns to the present with his new album. The fourth album by the band from Atenas is loaded with narcotic fuzz and a vintage spirit more typical of the heavy bands of the 70’s. Revering the legacy of Black Sabbath, with thunderous rhythms and enormous strength sprinkled with peculiar voices, ACID MAMMOTH unleashes the storm. A storm commanded by the riff, in an ungodly celebration of the heavy sounds of the 21st century, but with all the ingredients that created the genre in the past. An album that crushes you with an unusual force to become an evil, explosive beast whose Holy Grail is fuzz. Walking the path in the opposite direction, the doom vocation looks to the past to offer us an album established in the roughest and most forceful proto-doom. An occult celebration that little by little introduces us to an intriguing world in which disturbing lysergic passages are nourished by the heaviness that the band loves so much.
~ Roberto Lucas (Denpa Fuzz)
