Doom Charts Peroration – April & May 2023

“You know… they say an elephant never forgets. What they don’t tell you is, you never forget an elephant…”

~ Jack Corcoran

We received a handful of emails asking us why there wasn’t a Peroration Post for April… Well, as you know, yours truly went away during May and had neglected to make proper preparations. Won’t happen again! Upon my return we even feared those blurbs would be lost in the fog forever. But we are lucky to have wizard Remi VL doing all that tally and archive work, and he managed to lift them up out of the mist and that means, we can now, do a huge one for both April and May together… Which means, more work for me, (serves me right!) but also a lot more amazing heavy music for you all to enjoy! No less than 35 heavy rockin albums! So, feast your ears and please yourself by pressing play on all of them! And yes, there are bound to be a few that once heard, you will never forget…

The following are professions of love and adoration by Doom Charts Contributors for albums they could not stop spinning. Each month, the Doom Charts critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and other sorts of heavy rock albums. The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart which is published monthly. However, sometimes a love is so great, but for whatever reason the album unfortunately did not make the published Doom Charts Edition or because there were so many contributors are in love with that one album, that many decided to send blurbs for it, and only one got published… You can peruse that love here…

AGE OF THE WOLF – A PILGRIMAGE TO NOWHERE
Stoner, Doom, Sludge
San José, Costa Rica
Sleeping Church Records

The band has eclipsed their debut in every way possible.  The music still has the stoner atmosphere to the sludge riffs that move at a doom’s pace but this time around the band goes so much darker.  Anything related to the stoner doom/sludge genre isn’t usually known for being dark and deep but there are exceptions to every rule and ‘A Pilgrimage To No Where‘ definitely is.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

BEHÖLDER – GRACKLES
Stoner metal, Doom metal
Houston, Texas, USA
Self-released

Grackles is a fuzzy, punchy, low tuned piece of stoner-doom metal. I am a heavy riffs & delicious jams eater and BEHÖLDER feeds me once again! It is so painful to read that the album is dedicated to the memory of their bandmate. R.I.P Art, right now, your guitar is still sounding so loud to my ears!
~ Thierry “Grackles-T François (Metal Intégral)

BELL WITCH – FUTURE’S SHADOW PART 1: THE CLANDESTINE GATE
Funeral Doom
Seattle, Washington
Profound Lore Records

BELL WITCH once again releases an 83 minute long song that manages to captivate and hold my attention the entire time. It is heavy, glacial and dark as the void but even in the quieter, more introspective moments, the album speaks volumes that can shake mountains.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

BEND THE FUTURE – SOUNDS SO WRONG
Prog, Psych, Jazz
Grenoble, France
Tonzonen Records

Sounds so Wrong, released on the legendary Tonzonen Records, is my first exposure to France’s BEND THE FUTURE. I’ve come away immediately impressed by the sextet’s effortless and unique blend of jazzy psych and prog. Combining traditional rock instrumentation with electric synths and horns in a way that shouldn’t work nearly as well as it does, Sounds so Wrong draws as much from Kid A as it does Wobbler. It reminds, in that fashion, of last year’s excellent Gambardella album and the funkier, more eastern sounds of Mohama Saz. A complex yet fluid record that rewards repeat listsens.
~ Ben Bellum (The Greatest Thing You’ve Never Heard)

BLOOD CEREMONY – THE OLD WAYS REMAIN
Heavy Psych, Prog, Folk, Doom
Toronto, Canada
Rise Above Records

Not on Bandcamp

Let us all rejoice and dance around the fire as a new BLOOD CEREMONY record has dropped from the icy tundra of the Great White North (ok Toronto, Canada but you get it). The retro, proto, 70s infused evil psych rock is something I cannot get enough of, and the new album, The Old Ways Remain, is more of the same greatness this band has delivered over their five-album run. I love all the different instrumentation (led by the always prominent flute, but lots of other cool stuff too) without it sounding like a big cluster.  You don’t have to tune down and bring the heavy riffs to be evil with The Old Ways Remain being the perfect example.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

CENTER OF THE EARTH – MARS
Stoner, Doom
Tikøb, Hovedstaden
Self-released

Three lengthy tracks of coma inducing, heavy stoner/doom interwoven with passages of psych lead guitar.
~ Steve Woodier (Deathrattle Podcast)

COOLING TOWER – SAINT VITUS
Psych, Doom, Stoner
Melbourne, Australia
Self-released

COOLING TOWER‘s second full length and personally long-awaited follow-up, Saint Vitus, sees the Melbourne crew continue to explore their dark corner of psych rock to powerful effect. Saint Vitus is an impressive sophomore effort that sees the Aussies digging deeper into their now trademark creep, twisting the genres of psychedelia and doom to dark purposes known only to COOLING TOWER, and sounding like no one but COOLING TOWER.
~ Kyle SB / Shasta Beast (Stoner HiVe)

COUCH WIZARD – FEAR
Stoner rock, Heavy rock, Heavy Psych, Blues, Doom
Byron Bay, Australia.
Self-released

22 minutes – Here is a short but very intense EP. In only four tracks, COUCH WIZARD makes us travel from the early Black Sabbath to The Doors. This Wizard has fully understood Heavy blues, Proto-metal and the obvious pleasures of the Doom metal – big heavy riffs or blues jams, pounding drums, thunder bass and insane voice. Each track is perfect, each track is essential – so, what else?
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T François (Metal Intégral)

DOPE SKUM – GUTTER SOUTH
Stoner, Doom
Chattanooga, Tennessee
Self-released

That opening riff sets the tone, chords that harken back to an older time and place. It’s “dank,” not in the current sense of the word, but old and musty and hard to get rid of. It’s the kind of riff that bores itself into my brain and keeps digging long after the song is over. This is the real shit I search for, always.
~ Scott Spiers (CleanAndSoberStoner)

FAERIE RING – WEARY TRAVELER
Stoner, Doom
Evansville, Indiana
King Volume Records

These moogerfoogers sound like they’re having a BLAST pumping out some of the most magically delicious tunes I’ve heard all year. Everyone gets the spotlight at the party. A band of equals who give one another room to do their thang. It’s fucking intoxicating.
~ Scott Spiers (CleanAndSoberStoner)

Hard charging stoner-doom with accessible vocals and psychedelic tendencies. My album of the month, the vinyl package from King Volume Records is impeccable as is the girthy riffage and transcendant energy.
~ Bucky Brown (The Ripple Effect)

GAVIAL – VOR
Psychedelic Blues Rock
Germany
Exile On Mainstream

On Vor GAVIAL show that are masters of hazy blues rock. You know, the purple haze kind, the slow burning strain that a band like All Them Witches perfected over time. But GAVIAL adds a stadium worthy presence that will also appeal to wide eyed blues rockers like Rival Sons or The Black Keys. The songs on Vor have a more serious, almost evil lurking undertone though that pushes them away from their peers and into their own skin.
~ Jasper Hesselink (Weirdo Shrine)

HOWLIN’ SUN – MAXIME
Blues Rock, Garage, Psych
Bergen, Norway
Apollon Records

Every band should record direct to tape.  Case in point, HOWLIN’ SUN, who may have perfected the retro garage/blues/psych rock thing so many have tried to replicate over the years.  This record is a full steam rock and roll party and at just over 30 minutes it is the perfect blast of energy that never outstayed its welcome. I assume this is what the Black Keys wanted to sound like before, you know, they became what the Black Keys are today. Maxime is a home run for HOWLIN’ SUN who are single handedly trying to keep rock and roll alive and doing an excellent job at it.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

IGNU – UNITY III
Progressive, Psychedelic
Poland
Self-released

This is AMAZING! Reminds me of WIGWAM at times…incredibly accomplished album: Heavy in parts, light in others, with enough Psych for the die-hard Acid-heads, enough melodic flair and groove for the Stoners and an array of intricacies to delight the Proggers.
~ Reek of STOOM (Doomed&StonedStoner HiVe)

IROH – THEY RIDE
Stoner Rock
North Carolina
Self-released

IROH starts your engine and peels out leaving nothing but a cloud of smoke and the smell of burnt rubber. “They Ride” is catchy, stoner, rock n’ roll stuck trying to survive a zombie apocalypse.
~ Ryan Foster (Slightly Fuzzed)

JASON BIELER AND THE BARON VON BIELSKI ORCHESTRA – POSTCARDS FROM THE ASYLUM
Prog, Metal
Coral Springs, Florida
Self-released

Postcards From The Asylum is the new record from Saigon Kick’s JASON BIELER, who is edging more and more towards Yes and Devin Townsend then the 80s rock meets Jane’s Addiction stylings that made Saigon Kick an untouchable band from that time. The first album under the new BARON moniker, Songs For The Apocalypse, was a guest filled proggy adventure with the trademarked Bieler guitar sound and his unique Beatle-esque layered vocals that can get you to pick out his sound from just a couple of notes if you are at all familiar with his work. Oh, and that record was killer; very complex and played by everyone involved with some serious next level talent. Postcards From The Asylum stays on that path but then proceeds to make trails everywhere else across the landscape in the best possible way, creating one of the finest works ever to come out of Broward County.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

KRAZARK – FIREFLAKE
Stoner, fuzz, desert-rock, psychedelic-rock, stoner-metal, hard-rock
Madrid – España
La Rubia Producciones

In an attractive cross between the ‘Lizard King’ and the toughest Rednecks, Madrid stoners KRAZARK, establish themselves as a band to be reckoned with with the release of their first album, ‘FIREFLAKE‘. On the album we find the quartet more solid and mature than ever, managing with solvency among gritty heavy riffs, but also offering meticulous melodies in which the influences of American rock and metal of the 90’s are also perceived. Anyone who has seen them live at their many shows in recent years will recognize the strength of their songs and of the band itself, but will also find an evolution in the lyrical facet, which makes listening to ‘FIREFLAKE‘ extremely stimulating and fun. With clear reference to the legacy of THE DOORS, some of the tracks delve into psychedelic passages, something that gives them shine and opens even more, a horizon that they had already flirted with on their debut EP, but that now seems much more Sharp
~ Roberto Lucas (Denpa Fuzz)

LOMA BAJA – PISCINAS VERTICALES
Experimental Doom Rock
Spain
Spinda Records/Lay Bare Recordings/Clostridium Records/Echodelick Records

What we have here is a distillation of the finest strain of musical creativity, bottled in years of hardworking band experience, and served with the craftsmanship of a skilled film director to completely pull you in as a listener, and only let you go after these 45 minutes are over. The thing I like most about LOMA BAJA though, is that they don’t “try” to be different, weird, or “out there”. Their accumulative backgrounds and personalities just made them like this, forward thinking, staying far away from cliches and stylistic straight jackets. It makes Piscinas Verticales into the the exciting adventure it is, because you never know what will happen next, and your (fixed) mindset and genre concepts are constantly challenged. If there were a prize for the album that fits most on this Weirdo Shrine internet space of mine, LOMA BAJA would win it hands down.
~ Jasper Hesselink (Weirdo Shrine)

LOVE YOUR WITCH – A JOURNEY INTO THE UNKNOWN
Thrash Metal, Stoner Rock, Blues
Tel Aviv Yafo, Isreal
Reality Rehab Records

If you loved LOVE YOUR WITCH before then your going to love LOVE YOUR WITCH even more after hearing the Isreali trios new album “A Journey Into The Unknown“. This is a totally different animal to the bands previous releases, the thrash thing the band have going on is still in place but for this album has been tempered down in favour of a more rounded musical dynamic with the band concentrating less on speed and more on texture and colour, you’ll love it.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

LURK – AEGIS
Death, Doom, Sludge
Finland
Transcending Obscurity Records

The band’s overall sound is vicious. Slow to mid paced, the music contained with the album’s seven songs and 43 minutes run time is more direct and immediate than doom bands tend to be. The riffs are thick as hell, backed by an extremely tight rhythm section. There isn’t any holding back here—every song goes in for the kill. I mean, from beginning to end, your ears will be bludgeoned by death doomed sludge.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

MARGARITA WITCH CULT – MARGARITA WITCH CULT
Doom, Stoner, Proto
Birmingham, UK
Heavy Psych Sounds

MARGARITA WITCH CULT plays a blend of stoner, proto, psych, and doom with excellent results, combining Sabbath worship with more of your modern stoner, with bands like Green Lung, Early Moods, and Uncle Acid coming to mind as reference points. But the power trio takes off those elements and influences and makes them their own, offering up one of the most exciting debut albums of the year.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

MATT C WHITE – PUNISHERS
Alternative, Doom, Grunge
New York
Self-released

This one made me start the album over multiple times, before even the third song. The dark and grungy riffs conjure a twisted and aggressive blend of doom and bluesy punk. This can’t get the vinyl treatment soon enough.
~ Ryan Hilton (Black Throne Productions)

MOTUS – HERE COMES THE SUN
Psychedelic Rock, Live Jams
Balen, Belgium
Self-released

Bluesy mix of Garage Days’ Metallica, early COC and Hendrix vibes, this album carries you right there in the studio, and in tunes like “Space Rips” you can ear-witness the birth of the jam. Surely one of the most engaging releases of the month, check them out today!
~ Ioannis Valiakos (Desert Vulture)

MUD SPENCER – KLIWON
Psychedelic, Instrumental, Stonerrock, Ambient
West Java, Indonesia
Argonauta Records

The album is a masterclass in how to create spacey, transcendent instrumental psychedelic rock. Honestly there are tracks on this album that will transport you to a different plane of consciousness with their stunning texturing and immersive beauty. The approach taken toward psychedelic music really shows an understanding of the genre and a love for creating it. If you enjoy mind altering music or are looking for something to space out to, I cannot recommend this album enough.
~ James Sweetlove (CaveDwellerMusic)

OCKRA – GRATITUDE
Doom metal, Prog rock, Stoner, Heavy pop
Gothenburg, Sweden
Argonauta Records

There is rock here. There is progressive too. There is also pop that sounds as heavy as metal and there is a great melodist too. Gratitude is a positive feeling so it’s a good title for a positive album. The universe of OCKRA is creative and very original while being easy to access. For me it is a masterpiece of music refusing frontiers. It seems to me that Old Man Wizard fans will understand what I mean.
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T François (Metal Intégral)

OHHMS – ROT
Post-metal, Prog, Stoner
Kent, UK
Church Road Records

Menacing grooves of pure rock fury with a fearless attitude of smashing fun! The quintet from Kent returns with their best work to date. The artwork is brilliant for my taste, blending together the aesthetics of Frank Kozik, my good friend Bewild Brother and a touch of Andy Warhol. The sound is top notch, and throughout the record, the rhythm section tight as fuck, with a swagger that only Dale Crover and Jon Theodore can pull through. I have absolutely adored “Eaten Alive”, and I will go as far as to say that it could teach our beloved Mastodon a thing or two on how to leave out the trimmings and just give us the ballsy side of the riff. In all, this is a vinyl that I will aim to grab very soon, and I am sure that you will do the same once you listen. My album of the month, hands down!
~ Ioannis Valiakos (Desert Vulture)

OVERKILL – SCORCHED
Thrash Metal
Old Bridge Township, New Jersey
Nuclear Blast

Not on Bandcamp

I would put record number 20 from OVERKILL up against any of the 80s-90s thrash bands that are still putting out records today. This is no nostalgia act that you listen to once and say it was good for a late career record. Scorched has serious staying power and it rips shit up the second you drop the needle. The band has moved into a Priest Painkiller vibe, and I am here for it. Also notable is the amazing drum work from Jason Bittner that has given this legendary band new life.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

RUNEMAGICK – BEYOND THE CENOTAPH OF MANKIND
Death, Doom
Sweden
Hammerheart Records

This is exactly how death/doom should sound: huge, bleak, and devastating. This is a pure doom experience that takes the sound to places that most would not tread. RUNEMAGICK has crafted a solid black hole of rotten death/doom. Any fan of the band, or the genre itself, will want to take a deep dive into this cesspool of doom and despair.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

SWAN VALLEY HEIGHTS -TERMINAL FOREST
Heavy-psych, Fuzz, Desert, Stoner, Psych, Rock
Munich, Germany
Fuzzorama Records

At a crossroads where the sound of bands like COLOR HAZE, ROTOR or the Swedish MAHA SOHONA meet, the Germans SWAN VALLEY HEIGHTS bang on the table claiming a place in the Olympus of heavy psychedelia with a desert vocation. I lack adjectives to accurately describe the potential of these six magical songs. If we take into account that the album was made deep in the Bavarian forests in a wooden cabin, you will be able to sense the content of grooves that ooze heavy psychedelia and dreamy landscapes. Without any element that distorts creativity, the Germans have created a work full of magic and sensitivity.
~ Roberto Lucas (Denpa Fuzz)

TANKZILLA – TANKZILLA
Stoner, Blues Rock
Eindhoven, The Netherlands
Heavy Psych Sounds

TANKZILLA’s debut is great rock and roll fun, blending several cool elements that make these eleven tracks in forty-four minutes fly by. There is something familiar about this record, in a very positive way, in that it incorporates a lot of very cool stuff but with a spin that is unique to these two dudes.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

THEY WATCH US FROM THE MOON – COSMIC CHRONICLES, ACT I: THE ASCENSION
Space Doom
Lawrence, Kansas
New Heavy Sounds

The very first encounter I had with this band was A review of their debut ep for Doomed and Stoned back in 2020 for their denut release, “Moon Doom” Mack then I called them “a virulent mixture of Heavy, Slow Riffs and Space Theatrics”. Three years later, and signed to UK label NEW HEAVY SOUNDS TWUFTM return with an incresible full debut! 5 tracks of leviathan, tectonic soundscapes coupled with the harmonies of twin vocalists Lunar and 73.. EPIC is an understatement: The Very ECHT of Doom:: Panoramic, Epic and Majestic every which way you turn! Lunar & 73 seem to be almost Symbiotically Harmonious and fuel a Powerful, Monolithic range of Riffs and Structures… MWWB (Label mates) are the closest comparison I can afford, but that is somewhat miseleading… TWUFTM have a Unique vibe, Appealing sound, Awesome Concept and may well have just catapulted Themselves into the Echelons! Unmissable!
~ Reek of STOOM (Doomed&StonedStoner HiVe)

TRADING ACES – ROCK N’ ROLL HOMICIDE
Sleaze Rock, Hard Rock
Los Angeles, California
Ripple Music

Not content with signing and releasing albums from the best bands in stoner and doom, Ripple Music goes out and gets the best sleaze rock record that has been released in a long time with the debut album from metal supergroup TRADING ACES. Members of Warrior Soul, Streetwalking’ Cheetahs, and The City Kids come together to create Rock n’ Roll Homicide, which is exactly what you think it is going to be in the best way possible. Think Junkyard, The Four Horsemen, Circus Of Power, Hanoi Rocks, and any other awesome band of that ilk and you can get an idea of where we are going here, and it is glorious.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

VOID KING – THE HIDDEN HYMNAL
Stoner, Doom, Metal
Indianapolis, Indiana
Self-released

VOID KING have been kicking around Indiana playing their version of stoner doom since about 2015, but now, with the release of their latest album, and the subsequent part two that is coming soon, the band have seemed to hit their stride and are putting out their best material yet. The Hidden Hymnal is six killer tracks of the heavier side of the stoner rock, with some serious trad doom elements, and their best songwriting to date.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

WOYGN – ASCENDANCE
Alternative Metal, Progressive, Stoner Rock
Slovenj Gradec, Slovenia
Self-released

Two Slovenic musicians take us the distance and beyond upon the insurmountable heights of the 4-song “Ascendance“. From wide expanses of proto-metal, sludge and progressive metal taking place here. Built upon ripping riffs, abundant tempo changes, and thought-provoking lyrical themes, this debut EP is epic and unrelenting from start to finish.
~ Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker (The Ripple Effect)

YAKUZA – SUTRA
Experimental, Sludge, Jazz, Doom
USA
Svart Records

Sutra is a consistent piece of YAKUZA art, with of course a prominent role for its absolute centrepiece; singer and sax player Bruce Lamont. His vocals challenge conventions by often soaring over the maelstrom of metal mayhem in an idiosyncratic way. His saxophone hits the band out of this world with regards to originality and style. It might take untrained YAKUZA acolytes a while to fully grasp it, but the reward will be great and long lasting. As always the band has created a work of growth, that will test your patience but reward it tenfold once it fully opens up to you. Only after piercing through the chaos will you appreciate the deep atmosphere and covert beauty of Sutra. Like through a rough mountainous pathway that opens up into a lovely valley, YAKUZA will lead you the way.
~ Jasper Hesselink (Weirdo Shrine)

YES – MIRROR TO THE SKY
Progressive, Classic, Psychedelic, Rock
London, UK
Inside Out Music/Sony Music/Century Media

Not on Bandcamp

Legendary prog rockers YES return with their 23rd studio album Mirror to the Sky, an album that can easily be called a modern prog rock masterpiece. Mirror to the Sky should inspire artists everywhere and serve to remind legions of fans that YES is here, and they have not gone away, nor dipped in quality. They’re incapable of going quietly into the night with the talent and awe in the universe that Mirror to the Sky brings out. This is an album that can lead to a generation of new prog rock fans.
