As we near the curtain call of another Friday Freebie bonanza, none other than Oakland, California duo SLUDGEBUCKET keep us moving with their EP Sludgeadelic, recorded live in the studio and released this past March. A drum and bass guitar two-piece, SLUDGEBUCKET chart a course of jazzy, heavy instrumental grooves across four tracks, tight-as-can be with dazzling musicianship and a healthy dose of funk.
From the PR wire, Kyle SB (Good Boy PR, Stoner HiVe) said: “Welcome to one of the West Coast’s best kept secrets. The aptly named SLUDGEBUCKET have been kicking it for almost two decades and a whopping 16 releases, doling out groovy, sludgy jams infused with everything from prog to funk to jazz. Long at the core, and now front and center, are bassist Kelly Waldrip and drummer Marc Kaufman, who embark on a new era of SLUDGEBUCKET with their new EP Sludgeadelic.
Moving away from their original power trio formation (among others along the band’s storied tenure), Waldrip and Kaufman are re-inventing the BUCKET as a bass and drum duo.
SLUDGEBUCKET have always had a knack for groove, and stripping their sound down to basics brings their mastery of movement and feel front and center. Kelly’s bass tone is a thing of beauty, full and vibrant when freed from sludgy fuzz and grit. Each note hits with a purity of sound, whether in a flurry of KING CRIMSON-esque progressions on ‘Fall Of The Ronin’ or in the down-to-brass-tacks chug of ‘Two Wolves’. Just as unrelenting is Kaufman’s work behind the kit, clearly jazz-informed and providing the steady bedrock to the low end riffs. The drumming shifts with ease between smashing drive and funky, lightning fills, on full display with ‘Parasites In The Time Of Virus’.
On Sludgeadelic, SLUDGEBUCKET dare you to try something different, stretching themselves beyond their namesake genre, and the results prove to be deeply rewarding.”
Their own words:
“We’ve existed this long (2005-present), going through lineup changes, adversity, loss, to prevail as an instrumental bass drum duo that was born out of essentially a power trio with vocals format. We’ve released 16 individual sonic pieces thus far, and we’re working on material for two full length studio releases after just releasing our live in the studio EP, Sludgeadelic.
We are a heavy fusion band at the core, though we call ourselves ‘stoner metal’. We have influences from many decades. Krautrock/psychedelic from the 60s, progressive from the 70s, punk 80s, doom metal/sludge metal/stoner metal/noise/post-metal 90s-present. We’re also influenced by jazz, Latin, funk as well.
The Sludgeadelic EP contains previously released tunes that had vocals and guitar. They are revamped as instrumentals that we recorded as a bass and drum duo set to represent the current form of the band. Recorded live in the studio as a two track. Warts and all.”
