25. SHADOWS TALLER THAN SOULS – OUROBOROS / NEW!
290 Points
Doom, Metal, Grunge, Garage, Psych
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
Self-released

On their Bandcamp page Shadows Taller Than Souls say they are hard to categorize into one genre. I agree and in today’s climate where bands can sometimes sound very much the same as other bands that’s a good thing. A real good thing. Garage crossed with Psych or Doom with punk sensibilities they write is pretty much how to describe them. Again I agree. On their FB page they also describe themselves as tonally crushing yet ear catching. Again, perfectly described. The music is heavy and hard while being melodic and pleasing simultaneously. These guys practically wrote the blurb for me, and while I’m at it one more thing that I noticed they said somewhere that is also precisely accurate – all killer, no filler!!
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)

24. DEATH OF MANFISH – DESERT CUTTLEFISH / NEW!
310 Points
Blues, Funk, Folk, Instrumental
Perth, Australia
Self-released

With so much AI-generated music floating around, a certain level of caution is understandable. Even so, there are bound to be moments when AI music slips through the cracks. Personally, I don’t see the appeal. Why invest your time and energy in a plagiarism machine when you could instead try to create something new yourself? That said, several contributors found the ramshackle new release Desert Cuttlefish by DEATH OF MANFISH a little suspicious… er, I mean, pretty fishy. However, the man behind the project, based in Perth, has confirmed that he played the drums, guitar, keys, bass, percussion, and accordion himself, delivering a strange, funky, folky, bluesy fifteen minutes of instrumental meandering. A bit confusing from time to time, but that might be the whole reason the Desert Cuttlefish evolved in the first place. “Yes, it’s a cuttlefish. No, it doesn’t live anywhere near water. Please stop asking.”
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)

23. 3RD EAR EXPERIENCE – THE TWILIGHT SUTRA / NEW!
330 Points
Psychedelic, Space Rock, Krautrock
California, USA
Self-released

The Kaleidoscopic incarnation 3RD EAR EXPERIENCE channel their star-bathed amalgam of Spaced-out Psychedelia on this monstrous release. Rippling vortices of Krautrock, Space Rock amd Ambient transitions elevate this to a near-nivana of Psychedelic bliss!
~ Stevie Reek aka Steve De Rique (Howls from The Hollows, Doomed & StonedStoner HiVe)

22. ABYSMAL GRIEF – TAETRA PHILOSOPHIA / NEW!
340 Points
Doom Metal, Black Metal
Genoa, Italy
Avantgarde Music

Are you drawn to the Arts of Horror? If so, how could you resist ABYSMAL GRIEF? The heavy creeping rhythms, the dark riffs, the mournful violins, the sinister organs, and that voice! The Necrothytus’s ever-deep voice, spitting out occult incantations that send shivers down your spine. What a singer! 2025 marks the trio’s twenty-ninth year. Teatra Philosophia is their seventh full-length album (I’m skipping EPs, split albums, compilation appearances, and live recordings). One thing is clear: horror continues to captivate them, as the band’s esoteric inspiration and oppressive atmosphere seem endless.
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T“ François (Metal Intégral)

21. BLACK PIG MEAT – SYMBIOTIC DREAM / NEW!
415 Points
Progressive, Psychedelic
Portugal
Raging Planet Records

Portuguese Progressive troupe BLACK PIG MEAT draw from the rich tapestries of Prog, Psych and Fusion to create “Symbiotic Dream“. A smorgasbord of intelligent, well-crafted instrumentals that fans of KANAAN and CAUSA SUI will adore.
~ Stevie Reek aka Steve De Rique (Howls from The Hollows, Doomed & StonedStoner HiVe)

20. MOTORHOME – ODISEA / NEW!
500 Points
Alternative, Stoner, Rock
Montevideo, Uruguay
Self-released

This is the kind of album that immediately overwhelms. It enchants. Takes you on an adventure. Pulling you forward where paths fall away and sound takes control. Even if your Spanish is rusty, the vocals will feel essential, urgent, like the most important thing you will hear today. The four named MOTORHOME have discovered a way to translate powerful alternative and stoner rock into an all encompasing escape, balancing motion with atmosphere, intensity with wonder. Their Odisea truly is an odyssey. Meant to be felt, not rushed. Press play, get lost, and let the mysterious find you…
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)

19. CONDUCTOR – SPIRITS RISE! / NEW!
588 Points
Hard Rock, Proto Metal
Sydney, Nova Scotia
Saturn Eye Records

Canadian heavy rock quintet CONDUCTOR warms up the winter chill with a massive dose of swagger and proto metal spirit on their sophomore album Spirits Rise! With tones that alternate between gritty and grooving and soaring and soulful, CONDUCTOR captures the essence of vintage rock while infusing it with a bright modern energy that’s all their own.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

18. HUM – THREE / NEW!
636 Points
Heavy Psych, Heavy Blues, Stoner, Desert Rock
Frankfurt, Germany
Tonzonen Records / Cargo Records

Well! Here’s a lovely and surprising ride for lovers of psychedelic stoner rock. The sun is shining, the sky is blue, but all the colors will shimmer one after another throughout HUM‘s album, Three. This full-length is a succession of calm mid-tempos and tasty melodies, often fueled by a solid bassline. The bluesy groove is ever-present, but you won’t escape unexpected turns: ethereal guitar prayers, powerful vibrational attacks, acid jams, experimental noise atmospheres… The palette of these sonic painters is incredibly varied!
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T“ François (Metal Intégral)

17. INDIGOSAUR – COSMIC CENSOR / NEW!
693 Points
Proto, Classic Rock, Stoner
Cagliari, Italy
Electric Valley Records

Cagliari, Italy’s INDIGOSAUR are here to deliver some straight up killer rock to a 70s themed party in the form of their debut album, Cosmic Center. The record is filled with riffs and anchored by some great vocals and cool sense of melody, all while keeping a nice blend of heavy across the nine tracks. While rooted in 70s rock, they bring a not-so-subtle nod to 90s alt rock to mix up the vibes in the room on their first full-length.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip, Rich & Turbo’s Heavy Half Hour)

16. TELEOST – ATAVISM / NEW!
700 Points
Doom, Metal
Glasgow, UK
Inverted Grim-Mill Recordings

The winding path downward is only the first obstacle; the rumbling drums of the abyss crumble the ground beneath your feet. Vocals call out like a relentless siren, oxygen thins, heat forces sweat out of your brow. Stalactites fall from the ceiling, shaken loose by the crushing weight of the baritone guitar as it reverberates through the caverns. Desolate, lost, forbidden- Doom is cast upon you…
~ Jon McGough (Stoner Rock Army, Stoner HiVe, Outlaws Of The Sun)

15. EASY DEATH – EASY DEATH / NEW!
726 Points
Doom, Metal, Hard Rock
Ventura, California, USA
Self-released

Though firmly planted in the Doom realm, EASY DEATHh balance their sound out with a mix of Metal/Hard Rock, creating a more accessible hybrid to those that may not be as familiar with the Doom genre. Catchy melodies, incredible in-your-face vocals, and chugging riffs are all present and accounted for. The final track, Death’s Wheel delivers a wonderous conclusion, featuring a beautiful cello performance that amplifies the song’s haunting mood. Fans of Thunder Horse or later Spirit Adrift will find plenty to love on this self-titled album by these Californian natives.
~ Jon McGough (Stoner Rock Army, Stoner HiVe, Outlaws Of The Sun)

14. MIRKWOOD SPIDERS – THE BLACK MOUNTAIN RITUAL / NEW!
840 Points
Progressive Stoner
Chur, Switzerland
Nando Dāsher Records

For me, the new MIRKWOOD SPIDERS album is likely to be the last discovery of 2025. It’s one of those albums that proves you still have to pay attention until the very end of the year, even though it’s time for the 2025 top albums lists. It would indeed have been a shame to miss out on this late release, which has numerous undeniable qualities. This is the third album from the Swiss band, and it’s fair to say they’ve made significant progress in terms of songwriting, composition and production. The album is completely addictive. With each listen, it takes me on a wild ride. Its progressive rock takes crooked ways, starting from alternative rock and heading straight for a powerful yet still melodic heavy rock sound. All this while drawing on a wide range of genres and 70s influences, from David Bowie to Ozzy Osbourne. A must-have for the end of the year, in my opinion.
~ Jay Baner (La Capsule Stoner)

13. PALE HORSE RITUAL – DIABOLIC FORMATION
1160 Points
Doom, Stoner, Sludge
Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
Black Throne Productions

As if it was inevitable, PALE HORSE RITUAL found its right place in the December Doom Chart. Diabolic Formation couldn’t miss this unholy target thanks to its lead-heavy riffs, low-tuned saturated bass, slow pounding rhythms, and howling-at-the-moon guitars. I felt like I was witnessing the return of Black Sabbath with a powerful sludgy and fuzzy garage mix. The inspiration from the Elder Masters is very present (sometimes a bit too present) and so is the connection with our ancient coven. To my great delight, PALE HORSE RITUAL unearths Doom with its horror and 70s psych roots and manages to make it effective as Hell!
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T“ François (Metal Intégral)

12. VANDHALI – THE FALL OF EVIL / NEW!
1476 Points
Doom Metal, Proto Metal, Heavy Metal
Denver, CO, USA
Self-released

Denver-based duo VANDHALI returns with The Fall of Evil, the final installment in “The Evil Trilogy”. Via their trademark blend of doom, NWOBHM, and rich storytelling, the band relays the victory of Vandhali, “an army of resistors” who closes the book on the evil uprising for good. The Fall of Evil thunders by at a much more rollicking pace than the previous two chapters, correlating directly to the heightened intensity of the adventure at hand. It’s safe to say that this release is the most captivating portion of the trilogy and, while it marks an end to this particular tale, it simultaneously begs the question: What other monumental narratives might VANDHALI have in store for the future? Only time will tell!
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

11. SUN EMPRESS – STILL LIFE / NEW!
1705 Points
Progressive, Post, Psychedelic, Sludge, Stoner, Metal
Gothenburg, Sweden
Self-released

This immensely impressive debut and side project of Swedish duo Henrik Wikner and Christian Fransson is a listening experience of a very special kind. Still Life feels like a journey through a dark, crushing hell and into a strangely uplifting, psychedelic paradise, where heavy, gnarly, crunchy sludge riffs meet frosty, dreamlike atmospheres. The expressive vocals are hellishly captivating yet warm and human, carrying deep emotion through waves of doom-soaked melodies. Bold and wildly creative genre collisions—rooted in sludge and stoner metal with touches of post-metal, alt, and grunge—give the album a fresh, adventurous spirit. Still Life is intense, immersive, and emotionally overwhelming, a record that hits hard, lifts you up, and refuses to let go. Deepest reverence for this spellbinding and soul-consuming record.
~ Mel Lie (Sunday’s Heavy Tunes)

10. ABERDAR – THE SUN / NEW!
1710 Points
Doom, Stoner, Alternative Metal
Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Self-released

The great thing about December releases is that they’re less frequent. This means there’s no reason for missing out on a hidden gem that might otherwise get lost in the endless stream of new releases in October, for example. It’s the perfect time to discover new music and new bands. That’s how I discovered ABERDAR from Bosnia with the release of The Sun, their third LP since 2020. ABERDAR skilfully blends heavy, stoner and doom metal with a catchy groove, thanks to their powerful rhythm section led by killer basslines. Clear but strong vocals complete the album which takes a conceptual approach with cinematic introductions to each track. It’s available on Bandcamp for NYP, so go for it !
~ Jay Baner (La Capsule Stoner)

9. YURT – VI – RIPPLING MIRRORS OF THE OTHER / NEW!
2052 Points
Experimental, Psych, Prog, Rock
Dublin, Ireland
Self-released / Little Plastic Tapes

YURT, the band that only sounds like itself, continues its mysterious trip into a parallel dimension and sends us Rippling Mirrors Of The Other, a sixth testament to its gentle madness. I could categorize their music as experimental heavy psych prog rock… it means something to shake up our brains. Don’t be afraid of the term “experimental” cause YURT always takes care to keep things intelligible. The most striking aspect that stands out for me (after numerous listens) is the incredible synergy between the three artists. This album is warmly recommended by the Sonic Elders and me.
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T“ François (Metal Intégral)

8. WORMHOG – TRANSIENCE / NEW!
3333 Points
Progressive Rock, Stoner
Tripoli, Greece
Kharckel Porquel Records

According to the press release announcing the release of Transience, the new album from Greek band WORMHOG, five years have passed since their previous album, Yellow Sea. This may have generated a great deal of anticipation, as well as perhaps some apprehension, among long-time fans. However, as I am not one of them, I did not feel this way. I therefore approached Transience as a debut album and was captivated from the very first notes out from the loudspeaker. The band delivers high-quality progressive stoner rock, which supports clear and confident vocals and complex, consistently impactful melodies. This is only the band’s second LP, but it is a strong album with perfectly controlled structure and meticulous production. This is hardly surprising, though, as the band has been around for over ten years. It’s safe to say that Transience is an album of maturity.
~ Jay Baner (La Capsule Stoner)

7. BYGONE – BYGONE / NEW!
4416 Points
Proto, Heavy Metal, Classic Rock
Boston, Massachusetts
Svart Records

The Boston band BYGONE sounds like their name; a band from another time. This BYGONE’s time is now because their debut self-titled record sounds as fresh as anything that has come out in 2025 while staying true to the sound of the band’s influences. What are some of those bands you ask? Uriah Heep, Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple, UFO, maybe some Hawkwind, and even Elder period Kiss, just to name a few. BYGONE journeyed from outer space transported to 2025 from a better time fueled by riffs and organ to help save rock and roll, and boy am I here for it.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip, Rich & Turbo’s Heavy Half Hour)

6. NON – VIPASSANA / NEW!
5577 Points
Instrumental Heavy Rock, Doom Metal, Stoner Rock, World Music
Melbourne, Australia
Self-released

NON crafts an instrumental doom metal sound tinged with psychedelia and an oriental influence – a blend that will appeal to those who enjoyed BREATH’s album Brahman (for instance). The band’s name comes from the Thai word นอน (sleep/death) and Vipassana is a Buddhist way of meditation. The album is both a mental and geographical trip since two tracks are about meditation and the others are about spiritual places in Jordan, Thailand, Egypt and Turkey. This brilliant debut full-length album lays a solid foundation for a band that you absolutely must keep an eye on!
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T“ François (Metal Intégral)

5. GIANT LUNGS – PRAISE THE LAZE / NEW!
5580 Points
Stoner Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Augsburg, Germany
Transporta Records

On their impressive debut album, German stoner rock quartet GIANT LUNGS established their signature sound as a solid representation of soaring stoner/desert tones filled with turbulent breakdowns and a poetic, alternative rock soul. For their sophomore release Praise the Laze, the band not only let the darkness in and embraced it, but ambitiously began experimenting with other genres such as psychedelic rock, heavy blues, and even a bit of doom. This was ultimately a very successful undertaking, resulting in a much more varied and even more emotionally expressive album than the band’s first. However, GIANT LUNGS‘ trademark essence is undeniably still present, mainly by way of cyclones of stoner/desert rock that storm through the songs at opportune moments. The engaging figurative lyricism is stronger than ever, with lines that hypnotically vacillate between dimensions of fantasy and stark reality. In a nutshell, this is an album that digs deeper and pushes harder, simultaneously challenging and captivating the listener in a meaningful, memorable way.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

4. HEXJAKT – BLESSING OF THE DAMNED / NEW!
8288 Points
Doom, Stoner, Sludge
Sweden
Majestic Mountain Records / Burning Skull Records

Sweden’s HEXJAKT bring something special to the table with their first full length album Blessing of the Damned. HEXJAKT which translates to “Witch Hunt” is an appropriate name for this stellar new group of doomsters. The lyrical themes explore avenues of damnation to salvation within a juxtaposition of good and evil. You get 8 long anthemic titles which take you on a heavy ass psychedelic ride going from crushing riffs and percussion and then pivoting to a slower hypnotic pace at times. An added bonus is an awesome rendition of Dio’s ‘Don’t Talk To Strangers’ reimagined in a slowed down modern doom style. This entire beauty of an album will leave you feeling like you are wading through quicksand, your life flashing before your eyes and then floating to meet your maker. Are you ready?
~ Hugh Jones (The OG Metal Prophet, The Prophet’s Heavy Underground)

3. HOMEGROWN – HOMEGROWN / NEW!
10766 Points
Seventies, Folk, Psych, Instrumental, Progressive
Gothenburg, Sweden
Majestic Mountain Records

By forgoing vocals, they create thrilling soundscapes where echoes of 70s progressive hard rock blend with the most striking psychedelia, adorned with folk, blues, and a wide array of distinctly recognizable vintage vibes. The result is an instrumental album that feels both massive and meditative, steeped in the fuzz-drenched traditions of stoner rock while pulsating with the boundless spirit of psychedelic prog and jam culture. The Swedes manage to construct a transcendent journey that captivates the listener with a flawlessly functioning instrumental chemistry.
~ Roberto Lucas (Denpa Fuzz)

2. SKOGSKULT – SKOGSKULT / NEW!
15314 Points
Stoner Rock, Doom
Umeå, Sweden
Bonebag Records

SKOGSKULT (meaning “forest cult” in English) has released a self-titled debut that is filled from start to finish with crushing metal bite, raw and unfettered expressiveness, spooky interludes, and vivid imagery…a combination that draws the listener in and hooks them instantaneously. You’ll hear elements of stoner metal, doom, and even a nod or two to black metal, but the icing on the cake for me is the vocals – powerfully expressive and able to go from melodic and serene to blood curdling screams at the drop of a hat. The album utilizes “imagery of Skinwalkers, Norse burial rituals, and occult gatherings” and, as the band’s name implies, smacks of something supernatural and deliciously wicked going down in the dark recesses of the forest.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

1. PALM DESERT – RAYS OF THE GOLD AND GRAYS / NEW!
15561 Points
Desert, Stoner, Rock
Wroclaw, Poland
Electric Witch Mountain Records

To say that PALM DESERT “still has it” on Rays of the Gold and Grays, their first album in nearly a decade, would be a gross understatement. In fact, the band is stronger than ever, delivering their soaring stoner/desert riffs, gritty bursts of energy, hypnotic breakdowns, and ultra expressive vocals like absolutely no time has passed. Overall, this release has a noticeably more optimistic atmosphere than some of PALM DESERT‘s previous albums, on which there were some discernible storm clouds lurking behind the sunny grooves. The energy and emotive expressiveness the band historically brought to the table are still very much there, but in a lighter and airier format that makes it even easier to jet off on a captivating mind flight as these eight songs wash over you.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

Years in the waiting and in the making, it was a glorious day when the new album Rays of the Gold and Grays was announced, and even more glorious when it finally hit our ears. PALM DESERT follows the blueprint laid down by the early pioneers (and of course the band name correlates to that Californian scene) of Stoner Rock, delivering a groove-filled, fuzz-drenched adventure across sunbaked dunes. Killer vocals, scorching lead guitar, and did I mention the fuzz? If you need more proof, this album has already landed on many of the contributors’ end-of-the-year lists. So, what are you waiting for?
~ Jon McGough (Stoner Rock Army, Stoner HiVe, Outlaws Of The Sun)
