“Now that the days are growing shorter
~ probably misheard lyris by Hermano
Time means more and more to me

The following are professions of love and adoration by Doom Charts Contributors for albums they could not stop spinning. Each month, the Doom Charts critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and other sorts of heavy rock and metal albums. The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart which is published on the First Friday of the new month. However, sometimes a love is so great, but for whatever reason the album unfortunately did not make the published Doom Charts Edition or because there were so many contributors in love with that one album, that multiple blurbs were written, and only the one got published… Well, you can peruse that love here…
APPALOOZA – THE EMPEROR OF LOSS
Stoner Rock, Heavy Rock
Brittany, France
Ripple Music
French band APPALOOZA are back with their 4th album, titled The Emperor of Loss. This is the third chapter in the story that began with The Holy of Holies and continued two years ago with The Shining Son, of which it is a direct sequel. But even though it’s a direct sequel, this new album doesn’t just pick up where The Shining Son left off. Indeed, if this is the case at the level of the narrative thread that Wild Horse has been weaving since the 2 previous albums, The Emperor of Loss goes far beyond that in terms of the themes explored, as well as in its overall production. If the music still roars to the rhythm of a raging horse, because of the drums still setting their wild rhythm, it is sometimes lighter, sometimes heavier, while not hesitating to call upon new influences. In this, it is supported by the constantly renewed singing of Wild Horse which reaches a higher degree of excellence and in which sensitivity rubs shoulders with panache with the power necessary for the story. The album is a complete and masterful work, perfectly fitting the concept the band has cultivated since their beginning. And now, we can’t wait to discover the next chapter.
~ Jay Baner (La Capsule Stoner)
The Horses of Brittany, France, APPALOOZA, triumphantly return with their fourth record of heavy grunge with sludgy and proggy bits on The Emperor of Loss. This one is somewhat heavier than their previous work, but keeps up their killer material with great vocals, excellent musicianship, outstanding songwriting, and perfect production for their sound. Horses gallop, and so do all nine killer tracks on The Emperor of Loss.

ARBITER – TOWARDS THE BURNING MOON
Progressive Rock, Psychedelic Rock
San Antonio, Texas, USA
Warped Audio
I discovered ARBITER a few years ago when they released their debut LP, Ambrosia. I was immediately captivated by the unique style of the band. There is something like a touch of madness about them, something that set them apart and made them a truly unique band. Finally I included the album in my monthly top albums list, and it even ranked quite highly on my year-end list. So it was with great pleasure that I welcomed Towards the Burning Moon, their second album, but also with a slight concern: would I find that little touch of madness that blew through Ambrosia? But, as you might have guessed, my concerns quickly vanished. While the style may sometimes seem uncontrolled, on Ambrosia it is now fully assimilated, embraced and mastered. The band therefore allows itself to go further without any inhibitions, combining a wide variety of unusual musical influences with a heavy-psych rock base. We have a brilliant and totally controlled album that is completely outside the current production of progressive rock. Prepare to be surprised when you listen to Towards the Burning Moon — you’re going to love it !
~ Jay Baner (La Capsule Stoner)
BLACK TONGUE REVEREND – UPSTATE OF MIND
Hard Rock, Metal, Stoner Rock, Blues
Albany, New York, USA
Self-released
This is a killer album that you won’t be able to easily escape if you’re a fan of primitive rock with high doses of smoky blues and shuddering riffs of pure stoner rock. You’re looking at a sonic artifact that will narcotize you, shaking you awake with unusual force. Will you be able to resist? Probably not. Rawer and heavier than its predecessor, but without sacrificing that wild blues, its killer tracks will test you, infusing you with an energy and vitality you may have forgotten. But if those ingredients aren’t enough, the psychedelia contained in its grooves will be the remedy to win you over.
~ Roberto Lucas (Denpa Fuzz)
CARDIACS – LSD
Progressive, Psychedelic
UK
The Alphabet Business Concern
26 years after the untimely demise of founder Tim Smith, CARDIACS finally finished his legacy of unreleased material in the form of “LSD“. A mesmerising, innovative and face-melting selection of Progressive Rock and Psychedelia that is boundless in Energy and Wonder. My AOTY!
~ Stevie Reek (Howls from The Hollows, Doomed & Stoned, Stoner HiVe)
CASTLE RAT – THE BESTIARY
Doom Metal, Heavy Metal, Epic Metal, Medieval, Fantasy
Brooklyn, NY, USA
King Volume Records / Blues Funeral Recordings
I think to fully enjoy The Bestiary by CASTLE RAT and it’s artwork you’d better not take it as face value. Rediscover your teenage soul, remember your Heavy Metal Mag posters, your reading of The Great Power of Chninkel, your games of Dungeons & Dragons and let yourself be carried away by the music of the Brooklyn band. It’s a pure, juicy blend of Doom Metal and NWOBHM, a collection of big riffs and bright solos. The songs are driven by Riley’s powerful and supple female vocals. I was afraid the band’s creativity would be hampered by the caricatured (almost parodic) concept, but that’s not the case at all. The album is lively and diverse!
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-Rat“ François (Metal Intégral)
COSMIC REAPER – BLEED THE WICKED, DROWN THE DAMNED
Doom, Stoner, Metal
Charlotte, North Carolina, USA
Heavy Psych Sounds
The North Carolina scene is really killing it these days. All of the major cities in the state seem to have a flourishing heavy underground scene. COSMIC REAPER is one of those bands, from the biggest city in the state, Charlotte, and they are back with their brand of fuzzy doom on album number two, Bleed The Wicked, Drown The Damned, brought to us from Heavy Psych Sounds. Record two starts where their self-titled debut ended, but Bleed The Wicked, Drown The Damned has the band has taking their songs and writing up a notch, invoking some of the heavier bands from the 90s grunge scene even more and incorporating it into their more traditional doom stylings, with outstanding results.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip, Rich & Turbo’s Heavy Half Hour)
CRYPT MONARCH – CODEX PESTILENTIA
Doom Metal, Sludge Metal
Costa Rica
Self-released
On their new album “Codex Pestilentia“, CRYPT MONARCH maintains their knack for relaying the fantastical tales usually reserved for the traditional or epic sub-genres of metal over a crushing and viscous backdrop of sludge-laden doom. The vocals hold absolutely nothing back, skillfully drawing out the emotions that were certainly felt by the characters in the band’s mystical narratives. All of these elements combined create a most immersive listening experience, the brutal, unapologetic intensity providing a very specific type of catharsis for the listener.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)
DHYANA – MU
Psychedelic doom, Drone, Instrumental
Louisiana, USA
Self-released
One again the one man band “dedicated to buddhist teachings and meditative practices” called DHYANA have come out with new music. This brand of “meditative sludge” or dharma doom will be to the taste of those whom have taken a linking to the likes of Om and Bong. This psychedelic droney doom has kraut-like repetitive structures, while also keeping the laid back feel to the maximum. A furry sound envelope to lose yourself into.
~ Jukka ‘Shrike’ Kolehmainen (Psychotropic Caravan, Abhorrence, Shrike’s Playlists)
DOOMSDAY PROFIT – DOOMSDAY PROFIT
Sludge, Rock
Durham, North Carolina, USA
Self-released
North Carolina has an amazing heavy underground scene, including DOOMSDAY PROFIT, out of Raleigh, who back with their new, self-titled, filthy dirty second full-length record that exists to destroy you. You get riffs galore, chunky, doomy stoner sludge psych metal over the full 43 minutes. Also, it is almost 100% great when a band has a song named after a self-titled album on said record, and DOOMSDAY PROFIT doubled down on this truth as well. Pure evil psych doom awesomeness.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip, Rich & Turbo’s Heavy Half Hour)
THE DUKES OF HADES – ORACLE OF THE DEAD
Stoner, Doom
Dorset, UK
Self-released
And then there was, out of the blue, straight from the deepest pits of the heavy underground, the one and only oracle of the dead. Digging up remnants from long-forgotten graves that have been closed for centuries, spitting prophecies in the face of everything and everybody that still thinks being zen is the ideal state of mind, even though we all know a hefty dose of tuned-down stoner and doom is everything our minds and bodies need. THE DUKES OF HADES are the royals ramming the message down our throats big time. This should be a candidate for album of the year in every stoner rocker’s book.
~ Ronny Dijksterhuis (Stoner HiVe)
ELECTRIC JAGUAR BABY – CLAIR-OBSCUR
Garage Rock
Paris, France
Majestic Mountain Records
On their new album “Clair-Obscur“, Parisian garage rock duo ELECTRIC JAGUAR BABY concocts a truly electrifying fusion of garage rock, heavy psych, acid rock, and fuzz rock, with undertones of grunge, punk, and stoner groove. In short, this is a band that confidently does whatever feels right. ELECTRIC JAGUAR BABY‘S sound has a very raw, uninhibited feel, even by garage rock standards, and is always deliciously noisy. However, in spite of the massiveness of the tones that exude from “Clair-Obscur“, it has a strikingly graceful flow, fluidly slinking about in a near sensual manner, much like the animal the band is named for.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)
After three EPs and three full-length albums, does Parisian duo ELECTRIC JAGUAR BABY still need to be introduced? Their new album, Clair Obscur, is a successful exercise in raw garage stoner. Indeed, everything on this album is designed to exacerbate the rough, impulsive, and spontaneous aspect of their sound. Over 47 minutes, 11 tracks follow one another in different colors of heavy rock, with the DIY spirit as a common thread. Despite its minimalist format, ELECTRIC JAGUAR BABY has built a solid reputation on stage, and that’s sure to continue, as the new album is perfectly suited for.
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-Baby“ François (Metal Intégral)
EVILCULT – TRIUMPH OF EVIL
Speed Metal, Blackened Thrash, Classic Metal
Brasil
Awakening Records
Here we find our Brazilian champions swollen from their gluttonous gorge on the sounds of thrash based blackened speed metal. These songs are dripping with evil and scorched by the flames of the underworld. To say this is a welcomed assault on the ear is an understatement. They could easily leave the blasphemy behind and proceed with their dual guitar assault slicing through with a classic sound that could easily behead a larger percentage of those would be warriors daring to step on the battlefield.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin, Inherent Records, Mystery Pick)
FALLING LEAVES – THE SILENCE THAT BINDS US
Doom Metal, Melodic Death
United Arab Emirates
Meuse Music Records
The album’s atmosphere is brooding and melancholic, but it isn’t overly slow or plodding as some doom, as it remains very energetic with the death metal side of their influence. but it isn’t oppressively heavy either. If anything, it’s quite spacious and open; that works for the album because it has heavy gothic influences too, particularly with the keyboards. Speaking of keys, they aren’t anything flashy or complicated, but they are oftentimes layered and beautiful.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (DoomedForMetal)
FISH HOOK SMILE – FISH HOOK SMILE
Grunge, Alternative, Post Hardcore
St. Louis, Missouri, USA
Glory or Death Records
FISH HOOK SMILE got their start in St. Louis, Missouri in 1991. This was an era during which a healthy amount of skepticism and angst were fueling the budding grunge movement, a byproduct of the post-hardcore uprising of the early 80s. FISH HOOK SMILE harnessed this energy, imbuing their sound with a combination of murky, thoughtful tones and an unapologetically loud, hard rocking attitude. The band split a year and a half after their formation, but all members readily agreed that the ride had ended too soon. Now, FISH HOOK SMILE is back with not only the same lineup they left off with back then, but with a new full-length album in tow. This self-titled release features eight fiery, passionate tracks that serve as commentary on some of the most pressing issues that plague our world today. A palpable, renewed vigor is heard in every note as the band releases their frustrations in a raw and unfettered manner. And, while the grunge, post-grunge, and hard rock sounds emanating from this group will certainly hearken you back to the 90s, they will also implore you to stop and think.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)
THE GREAT MACHINE – WORKING CLASS ANARCHIST
Stoner Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Tel Aviv Yafo, Israel
Noisolution
THE GREAT MACHINE has been blasting their loud, sweaty, uninhibited sound for more than a decade. Known for their explosive music that doesn’t fit neatly into any one genre, THE GREAT MACHINE‘S tones tend to vacillate among punk, metal, stoner rock, and psychedelic tempers. However, you can always count on the mood the band generates to be gritty, amplified, and ever-changing. The band’s new album “Working Class Anarchist” surprised me in the best way by possessing a certain artful darkness throughout. It’s a bit reminiscent of the post punk movement, an era that makes its mark on the album in several places. THE GREAT MACHINE‘S typical punky delivery is now more in line with a garage punk style, which fits in perfectly with the moodiness at hand. Noise and garage rock also take a front seat, with intense distortion, dense fuzz, pulsing drums, and unfettered vocals in full effect. Stoner/desert rock shows up too, primarily in two of my favorite songs, “Neu” and “Desert Ledge”. Don’t be fooled, however…”Working Class Anarchist” isn’t THE GREAT MACHINE going “soft” or being pretentious in any shape or form. In fact, the band is as tumultuous and bold as ever, just in different, sophisticated shades…ever a true chameleon.

GREEN CARNATION – A DARK POEM PART I: THE SHORES OF MELANCHOLIA
Doom Metal, Gothic, Progressive
Kristiansand, Norway
Season of Mist
After being active on and off since 1990 and with seven albums under their belt, GREEN CARNATION may have just released their best album yet. A Dark Poem Part I: The Shores of Melancholia takes a listener on a musical journey filled with sweeping vocal and guitar melodies. Every song stands out as an amazing epic that would normally be a highlight on most other progressive bands’ albums. Because of this, it’s almost impossible to choose a favorite track. Whether it’s the beautiful album opener “As Silence Took You,” the mid-paced rocker “In Your Paradise”, the more intense ”The Slave that You Are” (which contains extreme vocals) or the galloping “Too Close to the Flame” one simply cannot go wrong. And with its runtime of less than forty-three minutes it’s an album that feels both epic and brisk. Let me assure you, when the album is over, you’ll be wanting more and hoping for a Part II soon.
~ Jamie Laszlo (Sea of Tranquility)
INTERCOURSE – HOW I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE VOID
Noise Rock, Sludge
Connecticut, USA
Brutal Panda Records
The fourth full length by INTERCOURSE is another slab of raucous, ultra-aggressive noise rock with a sludge-like edge. Without a doubt one of the best bands in the world to do this kind of shit. And that ain’t all. Lyrically they deliver the goods in spades too, being at the exact same time both introspective and confronting: part poetic, part observing and part an unforgiving mirror for the inner self and society as a whole. A deadly cocktail of heaviness and emotion that’s bound to grab you by the throat without even the slightest chance of relief.
~ Ronny Dijksterhuis (Stoner HiVe)
KUNGENS MÄN – RESANDE I ROCKMUSIK
Psychedelic, Krautrock, Space Rock, Instrumental, Drone
Stockholm, Sweden
Self-released
The King’s Men (på svenska: KUNGENS MÄN) is carrying on with the age old tradition of Swedish droning and krauting, just like Träd, Gräs & Stenar (på engelska: Trees, Grass and Stones) and Pärson Sound and Harvester have done from the 60’s onwards. Travels In Rock Music (på svenska: Resande I Rockmusik) is a continuation in their improvisational kraut and space rock style of music, not really droning this time around, where they keep going until they’ve had enough and bring the song to it’s logical conclusion, however long that may take (that would be ten to fifteen minutes). If you’ve ever thought to yourself “Pärson Sound is too weird” or “I wish there was more music like CAN’s Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi” or “Bong is too heavy for me”, you really should get to know this band… by listening their music I mean, let’s not get too carried away.
~ Jukka ‘Shrike’ Kolehmainen (Psychotropic Caravan, Abhorrence, Shrike’s Playlists)
LAST RETCH – ABJECT CRUELTY
Old school death metal
Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
Time To Kill Records
LAST RETCH have crafted one of the meanest, crunchiest, most satisfying death metal records this year. Meaty, sledgehammer riffs, hellish atmospherics, and locked-in grooves that never take away from the disgusting brutality of it all. This is filthy, ferocious fun.
~ Kyle SB (Good Boy PR, Stoner HiVe)
NEPAL DEATH – PILGRIMS AND PSYCHONAUTS
Psychedelic Rock, Progressive Rock
Sweden
Kali Psyche Records
NEPAL DEATH is a seven-piece band from Sweden who, under the guidance of Kali the Death Goddess, creates a hypnotic blend of psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and kraut rock. The band has a keen fascination with the hippie movement of the 70s, an era that saturates their music with colorful storytelling, contagious optimism, and heartfelt equanimity. Their new album “Pilgrims and Psychonauts” excitedly grabs you by the hand and invites you on an immersive journey along the Hippie Trail in 1972. It’s a powerfully spiritual expedition, filled with “love” and “chaos”, ultimately culminating in an explosive “cosmic rebirth” The listener will certainly notice the mesmerically smooth flow of the album, as each mystical song feeds organically into the next, drawing you deeper and deeper along the Hippie Trail. However, my favorite aspect of “Pilgrims and Psychonauts” is the unbridled love and passion NEPAL DEATH possesses for this time in history, the geographic area along the Hippie Trail, and for the life-altering spiritual lessons that could be gathered along the way. For me, this results in a contagious joy that I experience each time I push play.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)
NEPAL DEATH presents an album that could have easily been created five decades ago, with luminous songs driven by echoes of the Summer of Love and the optimism of hippies excited by the prospect of a better world, bringing their contemporary vision to life in a chaotic world. Precisely in these turbulent times, when the news seems to be a chronicle of events that call into question the social stability of the planet, NEPAL DEATH are a breath of fresh air with their cheerful, melodic, and psychedelic songs, completely inspired by vintage music.

NINJAWITCH – FREQUENCY OF GODS
Doom, Stoner, Metal, Space Rock
Knoxville, TN, USA
Self-released
NINJAWITCH brings a nice array of heaviness with their second release Frequency of Gods. As a fan of all things heavy and psychedelic, they cover all avenues coming at you with 5 tracks of purposeful doom along with just enough stoner, space, and metal elements to keep you happy. Hard driving riffs, clean vocals and an underlying thunder which allows you to freely band your head. When you’re driving up Interstate 75 into Tennessee you can get a certain serene to uneasy feeling as you enter the sometimes-foggy terrain of the mountains. The highway can be winding and treacherous, yet you somehow come out protected by the Metal Gods. That feeling is encompassed NINJAWITCH’s music. They describe themselves as Cosmic Doom Space Metal which sounds like a good accurate description to me.
~ Hugh Jones (The OG Metal Prophet, The Prophet’s Heavy Underground)
NOVEMBERS DOOM – MAJOR ARCANA
Doom Metal, Melodic Death
Chicago, Illinois, USA
Prophecy Productions
The album begins with the intro track, “June.” As far as this type of song goes, it works well within the context of the album. It features both heavy and light piano tones and Paul’s clean vocals, acting as a short representation of the overall sound of NOVEMBERS DOOM: heavy and light. NOVEMBERS DOOM is a band that doesn’t appear to be able to release a bad album. “Major Arcana,” is another brick in the foundation of their legacy. I can’t see any fans being disappointed with it but it’s also a great place for new fans to start as well.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (DoomedForMetal)
OLD HEATHENS – CELESTIAL DECAY
Post-Rock, Stoner, Rock
Sydney, Australia
Self-released
The lyrics “We launch with hope, we are the light” opens Celestial Decay and in a sense it’s part of the essence of the album, as it’s rather uplifting as opposed to doom and gloom. There’s an openness to the ambience, giving each note space to breathe while staying perfectly in sync. The detuned guitars have their way though and take an occasional bite out of the post-rock sense of weightlessness while the vocals narrate with emotion and authority keeping the listener tethered to the ground.
~ Jon McGough (Stoner Rock Army, Stoner HiVe, Outlaws Of The Sun)
PINK FUZZ – RESOLUTION
Stoner
Denver, CO, USA
Speed Demon Records
PINK FUZZ is a brother and sister led trio out of Denver, CO whose band name is quite apropos, as you can clearly hear both halves on their new record, Resolution. You certainly get the Fuzz from the guitars, with a sound right out of Josh Homme’s playbook and a sort of poppy stoner thing going on. There is a reason why it sounds this way, given Alain Johannes mixed the record. The Pink part of the name also works, given the underlying poppy-ness and all the earworms on the ten tracks. Resolution is absolute candy for me and is such a great combo of stoner fuzz and melodic poppiness.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip, Rich & Turbo’s Heavy Half Hour)
POLLY – DEATH DRIVE
Garage Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Berlin, Germany
Self-released
“Death Drive“, the debut album from Berlin-based garage psych trio POLLY, is like experiencing a fever dream that I don’t want to wake up from, its flow moving very naturally between loud and quiet, darkness and light, reality and illusion, and hope and despondence. While POLLY‘S sound is certainly flavored with a healthy dash of trippy psychedelia and acid rock, their garage rock base instinctively conjures up an equal amount of indie rock, dream pop, and surf rock aromas. These elements are countered by the louder side of the garage coin: unpredictability, energy, and fuzzy density, resulting in an incredibly vivid and hallucinatory mood.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)
RAT KING – WEATHERED
Psychedelic, Stoner, Doom, Sludge
Evansville, Indiana, USA
Self-released
So there’s this band from the USA that changed it’s name for some time, and then changed it back…basically the only thing that really stuck with me (I’m not exactly known for having a good memory! Grin!). But now they released their 2nd full-length album that’s simply sensational! Tempo shifts, switches between clean and harsh vocals plus atmospheric/psychedelic parts, what’s not to love? This is in my top-3 for 2025 at the moment and I incourage all Electric Wizard fans to listen to this GREAT album!!!
~ Rob Hammer (Rob Hammer, Doom/Stoner/Sludge/Psychedelic)
SHIT THE COW – KILLING IT
Rock, Stoner, Garage
Rissna, Sweden
Self-released
Killing It. No longer ramshackle, the tracks are touched by a new kind of magic but still feel like it’s all written by a band that refuses to tame its wild heart. They remain completely untethered and feel guided by something older, deeper… SHIT THE COW tap into some pure magic of unfiltered creation…
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)
SORROWFUL LAND – HIRAETH
Doom Metal, Melodic Death
Kharkiv, Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine
Meuse Music Records
On this album, he weaves plenty of epic doom tales, each of them stuffed with memorable riffs and emotional melodies and harmonies. “Hiraeth,” is one heavy album and it can be quite intense at times but it’s also gripping, atmospheric, and even cinematic in its breadth and scope. It sounds like a dream too—the production is clear and concise, allowing each individual element to stand out on its own while also working together the greater whole. this might just be one of the best sounding albums I’ve heard in this second half of the year. The album wastes little time in getting started, as evident with the ultra-crunchy riffs of the opening song, “the day is past and gone,” and the sweeping but sad melodies that accompany it. It’s pretty damn crushing but isn’t afraid to show off a softer side as well. After the halfway point, a wonderful clean passage arrives. This piece fits in perfectly between the two halves of the song! Despite the stark contrasts, it does make sense emotionally and the song remains smooth through the transitioning back and forth.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (DoomedForMetal)
SPIDERGAWD – FROM EIGHT TO INFINITY
Heavy Rock, Heavy Metal
Trondheim, Norway
Crispin Glover Records / Stickman Records
Though SPIDERGAWD have discontinued the ever-present roman numerals we’ve come to expect with each release they have not stopped their relentless pursuit of bringing us fans a mix of atmospheric heavy rock and metal. They are one of the most consistent bands in the underground with never more than two years between releases and with their eighth outing we get a heavier, edgier SPIDERGAWD. From Eight To Infinity is filled with catchy vocal hooks, searing lead guitar, explosive drumming, and of course that lovely saxophone we all appreciate, cutting through the mix. They have their own signature sound, and that formula is perfected, producing an album that blends grit, melody, and mood all in one.

STONE MACHINE ELECTRIC – FACES
Psych, Doom, Stoner
Hurst, Texas, USA
Argonauta Records
A band who never stays the same and one from which you never know what to expect, STONE MACHINE ELECTRIC bring their most straight up rock record of their career with Faces, and boy is it great. The guys show they are not just “doom jazz” or a heavy improvisational band. These six songs show that if STONE MACHINE ELECTRIC wants to, they can write and deliver a record with more straight up song structures along with the best of them. The songs may be more straight ahead rock, but no band sounds like STONE MACHINE ELECTRIC, regardless of what styles they bring to their creations. Faces confirms this fact once again.

STONED JESUS – SONGS TO SUN
Stoner, Progressive, Rock
Kyiv, Ukraine
Season of Mist
STONED JESUS has been around for a couple of decades now, blessing us with their genre bending doom/stoner/prog/everything heaviness with up till now five amazing albums and a bunch of singles and EPs that have cemented the Ukrainian band as one of the most eclectic and best bands in the scene. The driving force behind STONED JESUS, Igor Sydorenko, is the creative genesis, and for his next act, he brings a new lineup and part one of a three-part trilogy, titled Songs To Sun, which takes STONED JESUS to a whole new level of awesome. Dark, emotional, and heavy in multiple ways, STONED JESUS is hitting their creative peak with this project and this version of the band, going in so many directions but never too far off the path. I can’t wait to hear the whole story, but to me, Part One is perfect as it is.

YOO DOO RIGHT & POPULATION II & NOLAN POTTER – YOO II AVEC NOLAN POTTER
Psychedelic, Rock, Kraut, Jazz
Montréal, Canada / Austin, USA
Mothland
Experimental rockers YOO DOO RIGHT (Montréal, Canada) team up with multi-instrumentalist NOLAN POTTER (Austin, USA) and psychedelic rock trio POPULATION II (Montréal, Canada) to record an album with elements from krautrock, free jazz and noise. And I have to admit they do it very well.
~ Jukka ‘Shrike’ Kolehmainen (Psychotropic Caravan, Abhorrence, Shrike’s Playlists)
What do you get when alternative psychedelic rockers YOO DOO RIGHT team up with fellow Montréal natives and likeminded psychedelic rock trio POPULATION II and American multi-instrumentalist NOLAN POTTER? Well, one of the most exciting albums you could possible want. An organic and expansive krautrock brew with a jazzy component that especially comes to the forefront when Potter grabs his saxophone and starts jamming during a 13+ minute freakfest called ‘Ralliement’. Excellent stuff and my clear number one this month.
