“So I say thank you for the Doom Charts, the songs I’m singing
~ probably misheard song by ABBA
Thanks for all the joy they’re bringing…”
The Third Friday of the month is here and therefore it’s time for the August Peroration Post! A way to say thank you to all those amazing bands delivering our favorite records that might not have made the regular Doom Charts. Cause even though there is a lot of crazy, violent, insane stuff happening all across the globe. There is also much to say thanks for. And below you find twenty-four reasons! And we also wanted to say thank you to our very own Bobby Rayfield from Inherent Records and Monuments in Ruin for delivering that Doom Charts Mystery Pick segment. We love all our Contributors and they all do wonders for the Heavy Underground on their own personal sites, the outlets the write, podcast or videocast for. But Bobby has got a special place with us. His weekly Mystery Pick Segment focuses solely on the current Doom Charts and exclusively spotlights the Charts and the albums that made it. The energy in his delivery will boost yours for sure and all the energy and time he spends on making them feels like a huge honor. And he has been doing so for 100 episodes already! So, thank you Bobby for all you did and do! It’s amazing! A final thing to definitely celebrate and say thank you for today, is the fact that exactly twenty-five years ago a landmark album was released for our little niche… Lowrider’s Ode To Io! A foundational album, that not only created its own landscape. It shaped the borders of our scene and immediately crossed over whenever it felt necessary; stunning and one of the most gorgeous releases any band has ever produced…
So thank you all for following along and listening to all those amazing albums! Go check out the twenty-four below, the four mentioned in the Mystery Pick segment by Bobby and who knows, there might just be a next Ode to Io lying in wait…
The following are professions of love and adoration by Doom Charts Contributors for albums they could not stop spinning. Each month, the Doom Charts critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and other sorts of heavy rock and metal albums. The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart which is published on the First Friday of the new month. However, sometimes a love is so great, but for whatever reason the album unfortunately did not make the published Doom Charts Edition or because there were so many contributors in love with that one album, that multiple blurbs were written, and only the one got published… Well, you can peruse that love here…
ANDREW LILES – VULCANO DI MAIALE
Hypnotic and Repetitive Soundscapes, Krautrock
UK
Self-released
Fasten your interplanetary seatbelts and get ready for an expansive sonic trip brought to you by ANDREW LILES (sometime member of Current 93). This release contains only one song that runs for about 38 minutes and starts with some hypnotic soundscapes that slowly incorporate a repetitive keyboard melody before blasting out a steady beat that gets joined by an incredibly groovy krautrock-inspired bass line with a matching atmosphere just before the 15 minute mark. The rest of the way things shift back and forth between these elements with the emphasis changing multiple times, while on occasion also making room for some spoken samples. It’s a challenging, but utterly fulfilling listening experience once you decide to just turn the lights off and go with the flow.

ÅRABROT – RITE OF DIONYSUS
Rock, Alternative, Wave, Noise, Pop
Haugesund, Norway
Dalapop Records / Pelagic Records
Perhaps lighter than their earlier records, Rite of Dionysus seems to watch the human condition from above, sometimes Bowie-esque and always strangely hypnotic. Like that great red wine you sip slowly, it takes time to intoxicate you. But it surely will. It’s that meditative and minimalistic touch that just won’t let go and slowly chants and scours the transcendental landscape to deliver you an island of calm while your consciousness is bombarded by turbulence and mantra like vocals that often pierce and might even wound. Cold or was it a shiver of fear that ran through me, a cut from a knife and blood dripping from the tones that softly slip away… ÅRABROT deliver beautiful poetry that will race all kinds of different poems through your mind, it riddles their misty atmosphere and will make you want to find that light in the frost of midnight…

THE BIG RIP – OLYMPUS MONS
Stoner, Psych, Rock
Porsgrunn, Norway
Self-released
If you have been carrying a torch for the spacious grooves created by bands like King Buffalo and Elder and are also quite partial to the hybrid mixtures of classic rock and prog that the UK’s Sergeant Thunderhoof have been exploring of late then you need to make THE BIG RIP‘s latest EP “Olympus Mons” your next port of call, if these guys don’t blow you away with their exhilarating blend of post- metal, prog and heavy rock then you must be wearing concrete boots.

BORIS – DRONEVIL -EXAMPLE-
Drone, Doom, Experimental
Tokyo, Japan
Relapse Records
This year Japanese heavy experimental outfit Boris will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of their legendary ‘Dronevil‘ album. Originally released as a two discs with different content that were meant to be played simultaneously. It could depend on mood, personal intention or other circumstances (like the characteristics of the available equipment) when both discs would start, thus being able to create a different end result each and every time. The problem of course was that not everybody had the equipment to play those discs simultaneously, so it wasn’t possible for every buyer to enjoy it the way it was meant to be (or better: one of the many possible ways). Enter 2025 where BORIS decides to mix both discs together to give all of you an example of how it could have sounded 20 years ago. And hell, it’s gripping and sounds fucking great from start to finish with lots of drone and some heavy goodness mixed in for good measure. Now available digitally on BORIS‘ Bandcamp page, while a physical release is scheduled for October 17th through Relapse Records.

CARNE CON PAPAS – CARNE CON PAPAS
Rock, Stoner, Southern, Punk, Instrumental
Columbia, South Carolina, USA
Self-released / Boogie Woogie Sludge Records
CARNE CON PAPAS is a traditional Mexican stew made with beef and potatoes cooked in a tasty sauce made of tomatoes, garlic, onions, and peppers. It’s also a Southern touched, stoner rocking outfit from Columbia, South Carolina in the USA. A trio turned four piece that slings those gritty stoner riffs out into the ether with reckless abandon and just as easily funks the composition up with tasty breaks and bluesy licks. The nine tracks on their full-sized self-titled debut album give you a big half hour of unadulterated heavy rock. Often propelling you forward at relentless speed, chugging and grooving like the good ol’ Karma To Burn used to do. And yes, they’re mostly instrumental too, and that seems, errr, instrumental to the fuel they seem to provide. High octane stuff, the kind of fuel that will make your car run for an extra hundred miles. But those two track with vocals definitely add a little bit of extra spice. Husky, pyretic and skirting the corners of control, the vocals sound like the habanero that seers the throat and puts a fire in your belly. And yes, the production, mixing and mastering could use an extra touch up here and there. But as the grooves get their hooks in you, you forget about all of that, simmer along with the stew and know this is something wild and wonderful! As tasty as all of your favorite Mexican dishes… And mine… Tequila!

CROP – S.S.R.I
Doom, Metal, Sludge
Lexington, Kentucky, USA
Sneak Attack Recording Company / Third House Communications
What a revelation this new CROP album is ! Usually, it’s not the kind of music that would catch my attention first because I generally prefer clean vocals. And that’s exactly what crossed my mind when I first listened to it. However, even though I had moved on, I felt as if something had taken root in me, prompting me to listen to S.S.R.I. again. I was already ‘infected’, so to speak, and the album quickly rose to the top of my August favourites. CROP clearly has something extra. When you listen carefully, you discover not just one, but a whole range of undeniable qualities. Firstly, the singer’s captivating voice, which is both husky and hushed, stands out. Then there’s the perfect alchemy between the heaviness of the riffs and the captivating lightness of the melodies. Thus, the album is made of contrast but finally, an epic breath runs through it from the first note to the last. I have no doubt that, even if it’s not your usual style at first, you’ll be seduced by this exciting album, just like me!

FLORIST – ADRIFT
Heavy Psych, Stoner, Doom
Tampa, Florida, USA
Threat Collection Records
With a sound as big and vast as outer space and a band heavier than four moons combined, the boys from FLORIST are here to take you on a trip, bend your mind, and send you directly to the planet where the grass is greener, enjoying the sights outside the rocketship window on your way there. With a total rock star lead singer who also shreds, a gigantic rhythm section, and a mad scientist behind the synths, Tampa’s FLORIST just kill it on their second record, Adrift, which is filled with monster riffs, spacey sounds, and some serious heavy psych doom that these guys are perfecting. Grow in one of my three favorite songs of the year and FLORIST may just be my new favorite band.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip, Rich & Turbo’s Heavy Half Hour)
GITANOS – EL MUERTO SE RÍE DEL DEGOLLADO
Psych, Stoner, Blues, Alternative Rock
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Valiant Negro Records
GITANOS‘ second album ‘El Muerto se ríe del Degollado‘ is a bottom heavy combination of stoner rock, blues and sixties-inspired psych rock. Raw, dirty, catchy, groovy and utterly danceable with soaring, raunchy vocals and a matching, loose production that lifts the overall sound to an even higher level.
~ Ronny Dijksterhuis (Stoner HiVe)
IN MOURNING – THE IMMORTAL
Progressive Death, Melodic Death
Falun, Dalarna, Sweden
Supreme Chaos Records
To be seven albums (and that isn’t even mentioning their demos, splits, EPs and live albums) into a 25 year career and still be this good is something to behold. What makes this album so good? Well, IN MOURNING has always had a knack for being proggy without actually sounding like it. Through natural dynamics and the variety between albums, the band have proven themselves to be explorers of sound without the pretentious aspects that so often come with such journeys. In many ways, “The Immortal,” continues that trend. Indeed, each song offers its own identity and, of course, this album doesn’t sound like any of their previous ones.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (DoomedForMetal)
IVY GARDENS – DEATH OF DON VALLEY
Alternative Rock, Sludge, Stoner
Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada
Paper Cut Recordings
I was absolutely thrilled by the release of IVY GARDENS‘ sophomore album at the end of August. The album kicks off with a bang, asserting its punk influences from the very first notes with a succession of devilishly rhythmic tracks. As the album progresses, the rhythm gradually calms down, putting the rage aside for riffs that are sometimes heavier, sometimes darker, and which end with more atmospheric tunes that linger long after the album has finished. Above all, though, the band never denies its alternative rock influences, which often take us back to the heart of the best of the ’90s. And in the end, it’s that which gives Death of Don Valley its harmony. Get ready to dance, jump, shake your head and belt out like you’re 20 years old because, fortunately, we still are, all thanks to albums like this one !
~ Jay Baner (La Capsule Stoner)
LIQUID PENNIES – FORE
Psych, Prog, Electronica, Post-Punk
St. Petersburg, FL
Threat Collection Records
Fore gives you some fantastic manic funky beats with a unique mixture of electronica, prog, and psychedelic grooves. You hear the post punk influence with lots of good hooks. This band takes it to another level with Fore which is an incredible thrilling journey. The 11 minutes of Echolalia itself is insane. This St. Petersburg trio deserves your attention! And don’t miss them live either.
~ Hugh Jones (The OG Metal Prophet, The Prophet’s Heavy Underground)
MALICIOUZ – TORTOISE
Instrumental Doom, Funeral Doom, Sludge
California, United States of America
Self-released
To say Tortoise is heavy does this album no justice. Like all of MALICIOUZ‘ albums, Tortoise plays like the tectonic shifting of the earth’s crust. To listen to Tortoise is akin to experiencing the slow, grinding decay of a planet across eons. There’s a stifling, claustrophobic quality to this album – almost as if the listener has been placed inside a pocket directly inside the earth’s lungs, ears ringing from screams of subterranean chaos. With a decent pair of headphones, the music itself sits upon the listener’s shoulders like a physical weight; like tangible mass pressing in on all sides. The album is dizzying, intoxicating, and nearly transcendental in its effect on the psyche much in the way Sleep’s Holy Mountain and Sunn O)))’s Life Metal albums are. This truly is music to guide listener’s to the next plane of psychological existence, and MALICIOUZ seems to show no signs of stopping. With his second album in eight months, MALICIOUZ has once again waltzed to the top of my list and has yet another top ten AOTY contender.
~ Jacob ‘Reverend Fuzzcut’ Baker (CleanAndSoberStoner, Monster Riff)
MELPOMENE – A BODY IS A SUGGESTION
Instrumental, Prog, Post-Death, Post-Metal
Minneapolis, Minnesota
Fiadh Productions
On their debut full-length, MELPOMENE make the kind of musical impact that most bands fail to achieve over their entire careers. A Body Is A Suggestion is a fascinating study in contradictions. At once both aggressive and contemplative, discordant and melodious, progressive and accessible, grounded and acrobatic. Regardless of the combination of these traits the music possesses at any given moment, it’s always fiercely unique and compelling. Very probably the year’s best debut and definitely one of its best overall releases; I feel like I can’t adequately describe just how fantastic this album is. Don’t wait on my failing vocabulary, just go listen to it!!
~ Ben Bellum (The Greatest Thing You’ve Never Heard)
MOLOSSER CRUDE – I AM DISTORTION
Stoner Rock, Blues Rock
Uråsa, Sweden
Evil Ear
MOLOSSER CRUDE is a power duo composed of Tess (drums and vocals) and Jahn (guitar). It started out as a side project of Molosser, the same duo but in the acoustic dark Americana style. A desire to put more power into their music and step on the gas a little? In any case, Molosser is now on hiatus, and Tess and Jahn are now fully focused on MOLOSSER CRUDE, offering us this debut album that has countless qualities. Consisting of five tracks, it builds on the foundations established with Molosser, deviating from them without betraying its folk origins, embracing a raw, ultra-effective blues-rock with hints of stoner, instead of Americana tunes. Tess’s voice, which has since moved behind the drums, is more forceful in its timbre and much more groovy, almost swinging, in its flow. Here, she finds her full expressivity. For sure, the duo is now evolving on the stoner / heavy blues scene with great efficiency. And we’re delighted about this!

OUZO BAZOOKA – KAPAIM
Psychedelic, Garage, Anatolian, Surf, Rock, Funk, Soul
Israel / Turkey
Batov Records
I found out about OUZO BAZOOKA just the last month or so, thus missed the release of Kapaim. They blend psychedelic garage rock and surf vibes with funk and soulful atmosphere into Mediterranean sound. The Budos Band, Glass Beams et. al. just got a new neighbour in my record collection. I love this type of music.
~ Jukka ‘Shrike’ Kolehmainen (Psychotropic Caravan, Abhorrence, Shrike’s Playlists)
PATRIARCHS IN BLACK – HOME
Doom, Metal, Grunge
New Jersey
Metalville Records
PATRIARCHS IN BLACK have not been a project for long, but they have managed to hammer out a whole bunch of material, including their fourth full-length album, Home. It’s not like the core members of the band are any kind of rookies, with the duo of Dan Lorenzo (Non-Fiction, Cassius King) on guitar and Johnny Kelly (Type O Negative) on drums, the guys bring in all sorts of great guest to song on their records including Kyle Thomas, Karl Agell, Mark Sunshine, DMC(!), and some other great vocalist. The band’s overall sound is what you might expect from these guys, which is killer heavy doom, expertly played and with great production. But the cool thing about a PiB record is that you really never know what you are going to get from song to song, leaning on the singer of each track’s background to decide the vibe. Some very cool stuff from legends of the game.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip, Rich & Turbo’s Heavy Half Hour)
The band’s base is still very much doom metal: groove riffs, slow to mid-paced with a ton of weight behind them. Lorenzo knows exactly what each song needs, how to pull back or move forward with his string prowess at just the right moments. Kelly, as always, is a rock solid drummer who compliments Lorenzo’s play style perfectly. Do these two ever run out of rhythms? No, no, they do not. With all that being said, this is one of the most dynamic albums that either musician has ever written. There is a lot of variety to be found within the album’s runtime of just under an hour across 14 songs. That might seem a little long but each song offers a unique vision while still being cohesive with the overall structure of the album so the length isn’t really an issue.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (DoomedForMetal)
PILGRIMAGE – FROM AMBER TO SUN
Death Doom, Melodic Death Doom
The Hague, Netherlands/Malta
Meuse Music Records
What I like about this album is that while it is definitely rooted in death doom, it’s also bolstered by a Gothic atmosphere and it is melodic when needed. The overall sound is both devastating and sullen yet it’s dynamic enough that every song brings something different. It’s a cohesive listening experience that flows remarkably from beginning to end. I also appreciate the song lengths—they aren’t too long nor too short. Each song really seems self-contained and has everything it needs without feeling incomplete. That is, at times, a hard thing for some doom bands to pull off but PILGRIMAGE nail it.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (DoomedForMetal)
PURPLE STRAIN – LIVE FROM NOWHERE
Psychedelic Rock, Stoner Rock
Poland
Self-released
PURPLE STRAIN is a band who has taken great care in hollowing out a most enchanting alcove located squarely between the realms of stoner and psychedelic rock, utilizing a pathway of progressive rock as a means of travel between these worlds. The result is an incredibly soothing and hypnotic tone, scooping up the giddy listener and embarking on a dreamlike mind flight that seems to end far too soon. Don’t get me wrong, this sound is far from one that will lull you to sleep. Amid the tranquil flow of psychedelia, you’ll hear immensely powerful and expressive vocals, feel the pulse of the booming percussion and energetic bass, and you’ll take to the air on the groove brought about by electrifying riffs from Stonerland. The coolest part of all? This multifaceted sound emanates from a live recorded album titled Live from Nowhere, a more than adequate representation of just what PURPLE STRAIN is capable of as they gear up to record their first studio album!
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)
RISE OF THE WOOD – DISCHARGE
Metal, Stoner, Groove
Netherlands
Self-released / Hard Life Promotion
Dutch five-piece RISE OF THE WOOD have risen to the occasion and delivered a grandiose metal extravaganza. Charging at you like mad bull on crank! Yet highly melodic and incredibly groovy. Touches of stoner here, a little bit of thrash there and always full on metal. Discharge is metal extraordinaire!
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)
SCUMBACK – PERFECT BLUE
Hardcore, Groove Metal, Southern Metal
Moscow, Russia
Self-released
Groove, sludge and hardcore metal salted with elements and essences of 70’s southern rock is what you are going to get when dropping the needle on SCUMBACK‘s “Perfect Blue“, a sound that owes as much a debt to bands like Crowbar, Pantera and Eyehategod as it does bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet and Blackfoot.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)
SEEDY JEEZUS – DAMNED TO THE DEPTHS
Psych, Prog, Stoner Rock
Melbourne, Australia
Lay Bare Recordings, Echodelick Records
SEEDY JEEZUS’ third album sees them mellowing their typical white-hot stoner blues approach and levelling up the progressive elements in their sound. Something of a concept record about death, loss, and mourning, especially across the 6-part, nearly instrumental, Mourning Sea. The result isn’t exactly what I expected from the Australian quartet (now with Tony Reed (Pentagram, Mos Generator, etc.) in tow, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t even better somehow. That’s not to say that there isn’t plenty of fretboard worrying; there certainly is. But Damned to the Depths’ primary pleasures hit on a, dare I say, deeper level.
~ Ben Bellum (The Greatest Thing You’ve Never Heard)
SENDERO – SENDERO VOL. I
Stoner, Heavy Psych, Space Rock
Rosario, Argentina
Self-released
If you like your riffs loud, heavy, in your face and ready to burst like a rocket through the roof of mediocrity, look no further than Argentina’s instrumental power trio SENDERO. Their first album is one big orgasmic explosion of instrumental stoner, heavy psych and space rock, ready to get you in the mood for uncontrolled body movements with arms and legs tangled in various knots of disbelief. It’s that good.
~ Ronny Dijksterhuis (Stoner HiVe)
TAR PIT – SCRYING THE ANGEL GATE
Doom Metal, Stoner Metal, Occult
Portland, Oregon, USA
Transylvanian Recordings
There is no doubt that TAR PIT is deeply rooted in old school Doom Metal and their second album, Scrying The Angel Gate, is further proof of this. Their dark universe made of pounding rhythms, heavy riffs and vocal lamentations points to their masters: TROUBLE, PENTAGRAM, BLACK SABBATH. The occult atmospheres are very well crafted with the help of small speeches, cold and scary sound effects, and mysterious Hammond organ chords. Listening to this album in the dark is ideal for feeling the ancient demons send shivers down your spine.
~ Thierry “Pit-T“ François (Metal Intégral)
Scrying the Angel Gate, the sophomore album from Portland-based doom quintet TAR PIT, is a must-listen for any modern doom fan with a healthy appreciation for the genre’s forefathers (and I think that’s pretty much all of us, right?) Here, TAR PIT retains a backbone of proto doom influence made unique by folding in well-placed sludgy mires, psychedelic interludes, and energetic bursts. However, the tone on this release boasts a newfound clarity, the sharpness allowing the listener to focus on the impressive power behind the vocals and the reverberation of each and every haunting note. There’s also an increased focus on scene-building, with the songs frequently being divided into distinctive parts that come together to tell an epic tale. Of all the things you’ll hear on Scrying the Angel Gate, there’s one that rings through the loudest, and that’s the palpable fervor that TAR PIT possesses for their craft.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)
TUMANDUUMBAND – HAIL SATAN, TRIUMPH AWAITS
Blackened Doom Metal
UK
Self-released
TUMANDUUMBAND, the duo who put the BLACK in Black Country, return with what I consider to be Their Magnum Opus: A three track crawl through the abyss as the soundtrack of the glacial, dread-filled dreams of Cthulhu. How just two people can create this level of debilitation is both a mystery and a revelation! Every fan of the multi-layered Doom genre is gonna prostrate themselves on the Rifftual. Pure Brilliance!!!
~ Stevie Reek (Howls from The Hollows, Doomed & Stoned, Stoner HiVe)
