1536 Points
Rock, Metal, Stoner, Doom, Psych
Kansas City, Missouri, USA
Self-released
A sound so huge, dense, thick and pulsating, that the walls that surround you will seem to be alive, grow all sorts of greenery and extend ever more outwards. The new trio called MOMOVUDU have delivered one hell of a calling card with their debut album. Haling from Kansas City and consisting of Wo Fat contributor Matt Watkins on guitar and vocals, Nate Kiersey on bass and Brent Richards on drums, the three had the Wo Fat guru Kent Stump enlisted for the engineering and production side of things. The overal bulbous and throbbing tones, get sliced and diced by the edgy vocals and the freewheelin’ bluesy guitar work. Not just a calling card, it’s a free rocking ace!
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)
24. TRILLION TON BERYLLIUM SHIPS – THE MIND LIKE FIRE UNBOUND / NEW!
1610 Points
Stoner Doom
USA
Self-released
Nebraskan Stoner Doom outfit TRILLION TON BERYLLIUM SHIPS have crafted a massive follow-up to their previous releae, “Silo”. Five slabs of impenetrable riffage, fuelled by gnarly and gutteral vocals with excellent harmonies strewn liberally over the top. If you like your tunes low, slow and debilitating, then TTBS are the right band for you!
~ Stevie Reek (Howls from The Hollows, Doomed&Stoned, Stoner HiVe)
23. COMA HOLE – HAND OF SEVERANCE / NEW!
1804 Points
Grunge, Doom, Stoner
Westerly, Rhode Island, USA
Self-released
COMA HOLE’s sophomore outing, Hand Of Severance, is a great next step for the band and should take the band’s following to the next level. If Eryka Fir, who plays everything but drums and sings too, is not a star in the making I don’t know who would be (Steve Anderson is not too shabby on the skins either). COMA HOLE has a whole bunch of albums from 90s bands from Seattle in their collection, and there is a Melvins/Mudhoney fuzz to the six tracks, but also a sense of melody that shines through.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)
22. VEUVE – POLE / NEW!
1881 Points
Sludge, Stoner Metal, Psych, Doom
Pordenone, Italy
Go Down Records
A collection of songs with an undulating and epic feel from a band who have no problem with shifting between dynamics that are one minute lilting and melodic and the next are complex and crushing. Veuve are not quite the new Elder but they are getting damn close!
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)
21. ALTARETH – PASSAGE – THE WELFARE SESSIONS / NEW!
2700 Points
Doom, Stoner
Gothenburg, Sweden
Self-released
If you prefer your doom and stoner going down the beaten path of blood, sweat and dark structures, look no further than Gothenburg’s own ALTARETH, because they deliver exactly that on their second full length ‘Passage – The Welfare Sessions‘. The music has an obvious connection with bands like Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus and Bloody Hammers with some minor twists and turns, like using acoustic guitar at moments you wouldn’t expect it. Add to that an impeccable execution and a great singer, and you can conclude beyond reasonable doubt that these Swedes have created one of the best traditional doom albums this year.
~ Ronny Dijksterhuis (Stoner HiVe)
20. SOFTSUN – DAYLIGHT IN THE DARK / NEW!
2712 Points
Psych, Shoegaze, Desert
California and Norway
Ripple Music
The soft angelic voice speaks out from low, distant clouds and calls to those who raise their heads hearing the siren call. A delicate light shines through to touch upon their face and wash it with warmth beyond the undercurrent. That unseen harsh environment that has secluded the individual is forgotten. Like a magic spell, the flag is raised and guided with forward momentum, pulling the listener like a gravitational pull from song to song.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin, Inherent Records, Mystery Pick)
19. CARACARA – HORTIS MENTIS CANTOS / NEW!
2926 Points
Proto-Metal, Doom, Stoner Rock, Heavy Psych
Providence, Rhode island
Self-released
A blistering mix of proto-metal and stoner rock that occasionally nods its head to heavy psych and funk, a unique sound that can have you throwing horns one minute and throwing shapes the next.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)
18. GRAVE NEXT DOOR – SORRY NO CANDY / NEW!
2926 Points
Metal, Doom, Hard Rock, Stoner
Grand Rapids, MI, USA
Black Doomba Records
The Salerno brothers, Patrick on drums and Tony on guitar and vocals (with bassist Brendan Reeder) are back with their second full length album. Here we have more of that raw, hard rocking stoner Metal they brought us on their first album however this one sounds even better. Well written and performed songs with great production quality that brings the sound of each instrument to the forefront while keeping the raw, fuzzy sound fully intact. I was fortunate to catch these dudes play live once and I highly recommend seeing them in person if you ever get the opportunity. They really bring it as evident on this kick ass album. There is a cool cover of White Room too.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)
17. SLOWER – RAGE AND RUIN / NEW!
3536 Points
Doom, Metal, Slayer
California, Washington, Sweden
Heavy Psych Sounds
Earlier this year, SLOWER, the supergroup led by Fu Manchu’s Bob Balch, released their self-titled debut album featuring a series of sludged out Slayer covers. The album was way better than it had any right to be; a real highlight. If that was the beginning and the end of the band, a thought experiment made good, no one would have cause to complain. But here we are some months later with SLOWER’s second album, Rage And Ruin. The band is consolidated to a power trio rounded out by Year of the Cobra’s Amy Tung Barrysmith and Monolord’s Esben Willems. There are two more Slayer covers (excellent again) and four originals which level up the experience by taking the band’s mix of turgid riffing, speedy solos, and slithery vocal menace and channeling them into a whole new direction. That’s the real highlight here and it makes for a delightfully nasty listening experience. Not the only time I’m saying it this month, but this is a real AOTY contender.
~ Ben Bellum (The Greatest Thing You’ve Never Heard)
16. STARMONGER – OCCULTATION / NEW!
4064 Points
Desert Rock, Fuzz, Heavy Psych, Stoner
Paris, France
Interstellar Smoke Records
STARMONGER mix elements of many of the heavy music sub-genres we all love. Somehow they are heavy, abrasive and fuzzy while remaining clean, precise and sharply focused. This album was released late in the month and I didn’t know it was coming but I obviously had to make room on my list for this gem. Don’t miss it.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)
15. SURFSQUATCH – TIME VAMPIRE / NEW!
4130 Points
Heavy, Psych, Stoner, Rock
Mendocino, California, USA
Self-released
“Time Vampire” is the 3rd full-length acoustic devil’s wave ride from the four SURFSQUATCH, who masterfully ignite a more than infectious and equally daring flirtation between decent, maybe perhaps genetically outgrown, Californian surf-punk vibes and a natural affinity for BLACK SABBATH‘s holy riffs that they have celebrated for decades. SURFSQUATCH definitely rock the surf with a rich stoner groove, flattering fuzz, subtle melancholic-doomy grunge while lighting their very own and unique, wicked flame. Whispered words about the fur-trimmed Californian surf-squatch legend riding the waves on wooden boards, also speak of the band’s rousing live show qualities. So: “rock’n loose” and, true to the awesome album cover (by Brandon Hall) (I love it!), pull this “California Surf Sabbath” through your veins!
~ Mel Lie (Sunday’s Heavy Tunes)
14. LONGHEADS – LAYERS OF WAX / NEW!
4648 Points
Doom, Psychedelic Rock
London, UK
Stolen Body Records
Layers of Wax builds upon a heavy psych framework (STRONG emphasis on the “heavy”) with healthy doses of doom, sludge, and even a delightfully noisy garage rock influence. While combining the weightiness of metal with psychedelic rock is nothing new, LONGHEADS‘ sound is unique in just how stark the contrast is between the various styles they meld together. What’s heavy is earth-shakingly heavy, and the psychedelic side of things is utterly trippy and mind-bending. LONGHEADS masterfully creates a formidable and ultra immersive take on heavy psych that you didn’t know you needed.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)
13. VESSEL – THE SOMNIFER / NEW!
4709 Points
Stoner, Doom, Metal, Psychedelic
Bendigo, Victoria, Australia
Majestic Mountain Records
This is my first experience with VESSEL—and I have definitely been missing out. Although rooted firmly in doom, the album is quite dynamic. It’s subtle at first–this is an album that is very encompassing and as it absorbs you, you’ll want to pass out the other side and go back in again to hit up details you might have missed. In that respect, it has a lot of psychedelic elements it uses to build layers of psychosis. Of course, it’s usually world building with a slower tempo so even as it creates, it crushes with raw power. Like any good doom/stoner album, “The Somnifer,” has a big blues influence and a ton of groove and fuzz. But it needs all these influences to present its concept of the relationship of trauma and sleep. The songs are written to capture the different mental stages a person can pass through. It’s certainly a unique concept yet the subject matter feels right at home for the genre. Personally, I think it works very well with the presentation. The vocals are sparse, used only when needed. They too have a variety and never really sound the same or use the same patterns when appearing. I also noticed something very interesting—it seems the interludes of the album follow each other just as much as they fit in with the album as a whole. Maybe it’s all in my head but it makes sense to me.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)
12. WIZARD MUST DIE – L’OR DES FOUS / NEW!
4800 Points
Progressive Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Lyon, France
Self-released
WIZARD MUST DIE is a french band, built by crazy guys (dubious humor, sometimes duet, sometimes trio, 6 years to record an album, singing in french or english…) sometimes hard to follow. In the land of the dead turtles, their first album born six years ago, blew us away at the time. But we must admit that we had forgotten them a little… This month, they release a new album, called “L’or des fous” (Fool’s gold) and we must admit another thing: we realize that we missed us soooo much! This album is totally out of control, but in the good way: the band grabs you and takes you into a whirlwind of feelings and a storm of emotions from which it will be difficult to recover. Don’t miss it!
~ Damien Regnauld (Stoner Freaks Anthology)
11. FAMILIARS – EASY DOES IT / NEW!
5190 Points
Rock, Classic, Roots, Americana, Stoner, Psych
Ontario, Canada
Full Moon Records
“FAMILIARS” have one thing in common with some of my favourite bands: they are hard to pidgeonhole into a sound or genre. That’s about it, because these guys have created a sound that is unlike anything I’ve ever heard. “FAMILIARS” come at the whole stoner/doom/heavy psych thing from americana and country, instead of the more standard route of blues and metal that we’ve been used to. “Easy Does It” is overall a more chill afair than their debut (All In Good Time) but the band sounds more sure than ever on who they are and what they want to put out there!
~ Remi VL (Remi Post Too Many Links)
10. IAN BLURTON’S FUTURE NOW – CRIMES OF THE CITY / NEW!
5408 Points
Classic Rock, NWOHM, Hard Rock, Seventies
Canada
Pajama Party Records
The future is now but IAN BLURTON’S FUTURE NOW tempers their songcraft in the flames of when rock ‘n roll ruled the world, when your source of music was a local record store or radio station. Filled with sounds of the 70’s, ‘Crimes of the City’ has a familiarity to it, and has an endearing knack to remind you of classic songs from that era. The band certainly doesn’t sound like anyone else in the current scene. Containing elaborate guitar parts that range from hard rock to early heavy metal, the masterfully executed twin guitar attacks will have you digging out your old Wishbone Ash and Blue Oyster Cult records. The equally remarkable ear catching melodies and vocal harmonies jump out with sounds of glam and classic rock, forging the songs into true rock anthems.
~ Jon McGough (Stoner Rock Army, Stoner HiVe, Outlaws Of The Sun)
9. WARPSTORMER – WARPSTORMER / NEW!
6422 Points
Stoner-Metal, Metal, Thrash, Sludge
London, UK
London Doom Collective
WARPSTORMER tear the sky asunder and pull lightning from the sky, throwing a scorching bolt of a debut down upon mankind. Combining their love of sci-fi, fantasy, and all things heavy the band delivers a thrashy, sludgy mix of stoner metal that will surely satisfy. From the faster paced speed tracks, to the creeping headbangers, WARPSTORMER never lessens their commitment to bring forth the art of the riff or the desire of the groove. Both are demonstrated within this self-titled release with a monstrous sound and ferocity as the storm never settles, it only expels more intensity.
~ Jon McGough (Stoner Rock Army, Stoner HiVe, Outlaws Of The Sun)
8. THE GATES OF SLUMBER – THE GATES OF SLUMBER / NEW!
6592 Points
Traditional Doom Metal
Indianapolis, Indiana
Svart Records
I never expected that THE GATES OF SLUMBER would come charging back a decade in the wilderness, but charge back they have with a full tank of disdain for the state of human affairs. Historically, there have been two versions of TGOS, one that leans more towards NWOTHM (as heard on Conqueror and Hymns of Blood and Thunder) and one that is pure doom (The Awakening and Wretch); this is predominantly the latter, with the band leaning hard into their post-Vitus malaise. I have to say it’s incredibly refreshing to have them back; they’ve effectively come out of nowhere to run circles around just about every other trad doom record this side of Finland. A strong AOTY contender.
~ Ben Bellum (The Greatest Thing You’ve Never Heard)
7. WORMSAND – YOU, THE KING / NEW!
8126 Points
Stoner-Doom, Heavy Psych, Sludge
Menton, France
Mrs Red Sound
In a world where there can be a lot of the same, WORMSAND are certainly an exception. It’s amazing how the band can take the genres and completely put their own twist on it. It’s the type of album I search for, something fresh and new. The heavy stoner doom riffs have a thick distortion and an unconventional timing to them that are fascinating. They are also complex in nature, as the guitar rarely (if ever) settles on just power chords, instead walking progressions of notes through the fuzz. The psych moments are equally breathtaking, bridging gaps between the heavy, adding an extra layer to an already uniquely impressive sound. The vocals alternate from a melodic clean to a monstrous harsh bringing contrast and further character to ‘You, The King’. The end result is a creative and sometimes dark atmospheric album that will most certainly satisfy.
~ Jon McGough (Stoner Rock Army, Stoner HiVe, Outlaws Of The Sun)
6. SEA OF SNAKES – BOW TO NO ONE / NEW!
9504 Points
Doom, Stoner Metal
Los Angeles, California, USA
Glory or Death Records
SEA OF SNAKES is back with their highly anticipated sophomore album, Bow to No One, which sees the band moving in a much heavier direction. This no-filler album is overflowing with delicious, evil goodness in the form of SEA OF SNAKES‘ trademark doom riffs and stoner metal grit topped with those powerhouse grungy vocals. This time, while the tone is even more sinister, hazy, and bone-rattling, there are plenty of nods to old school grunge and heavy metal throughout the album. Most importantly, Bow to No One makes it abundantly clear that SEA OF SNAKES have zoned in on their signature sound, and it DOOMS!
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)
5. MOUNT HUSH – II / NEW!
12466 Points
Psych, Rock, Blues
Germany
Self-released
MOUNT HUSH’s II, the highly anticipated follow up album, has climbed to the peak. Magnificent psychedelic stoner rock echoes from the top of the mountain and demands your undivided attention out here. So find a quiet place, and enjoy the journey up.
~ Michael D’Amato (Playgroundz Rocks, D’Amato Production)
4. MAGICK POTION – MAGICK POTION / NEW!
19825 Points
Psych Rock, Garage Rock, Acid Rock
Baltimore, MD, USA
RidingEasy Records
MAGICK POTION, the trio from Baltimore is the real deal, from their sound to their look, these guys came from their time machine where they were on a bill with Blue Cheer, stopped to see a Grand Funk show along the way, and picked up a couple Zeppelin 8 tracks before dropping these eight killer tracks that capture that era of music better than pretty much any other band out there today. There are a lot of bands out there who try to copy the sounds of yesteryear. Some successfully, others terribly but somehow find a fan base, but MAGICK POTION does it as good or better than any of them. Yes, even the ones who somehow fill arenas. MAGICK POTION is the most real and raw new rock band out there today who really gets it. Yeah, the sound is from the past, but this is true rock and roll, as true as anything I have heard all year.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)
3. 10,000 YEARS – ALL QUIET ON THE FINAL FRONTIER / NEW!
23374 Points
Stoner, Doom
Sweden
Ripple Music
Hands down album of the month here at The Mighty Decibel is All Quiet On The Final Frontier by Sweden’s 10,000 YEARS. After completing the conceptual trilogy of their first three records, the band decide to go the standard non-conceptual route this time out. Musically, the band still delivers head crushing stoner doom with exquisite guitar work, but this time out the band introduces some more melody and rock’n’roll swagger making it even more compelling. A must buy for stoner doom heads.
~ Chris Tighe (The Mighty Decibel)
2. 1000MODS – CHEAT DEATH / NEW!
23814 Points
Hard Rock, Punk, Stoner Rock
Chiliomodi, Greece
Ripple Music
1000MODS is back with another quintessential album in Cheat Death. What a ride this is, scorched with rhythmic fury, melodic hook and dusted with a crusty angst. The progression of songcraft carries effortlessly throughout the album and comes crashing to a triumphant close on the track Grey, Green Blues. Absolutely and undeniably EPIC!!!
~ Bucky Brown (The Ripple Effect)
1. SERGEANT THUNDERHOOF – THE GHOST OF BADON HILL / NEW!
54810 Points
Metal, Stoner, Psych, Prog
Bath, UK
Pale Wizard Records
SERGEANT THUNDERHOOF just redefined whatever I thought was possible for a rock band to do in 2024. The Ghost of Badon Hill is everything great about the band, but with more focus, intensity, and restraint. It’s epic without being bloated and heavy without weighing itself down. There is simply no band in the Stoner/Doom/Heavy Underground doing it better than these guys.
~ Scott Spiers (CleanAndSoberStoner, Monster Riff)
The most highly regarded band on the heavy psych/stoner/doom scene in recent years, Elder, has influenced a ton of bands. Some recognizably borrow from their sonic signature, but even more positively, others have taken the queue to push boundaries outside of the typical subgenre confines, such as King Buffalo, Vitskär Süden and SERGEANT THUNDERHOOF. The band has been around for a decade, releasing their first EP in 2014, but really made a move to stand out with This Sceptred Veil (2022). As they’ve expanded the scope of their sound palate, they’ve also grown more ambitious in songwriting and concepts, this time tackling The Battle of Badon, the accounts of the 5th century clash between Britons and Anglo-Saxons were hazy and fragmented with Arthurian legend mixed in. Prime material for a progressive psych metal album. While the band’s earlier work had been aligned with stoner doom, like Elder, Pallbearer and Anathema, they’ve evolved beyond those boundaries into an elegantly moody, melodic territory that could be comparable to bands outside of their genre confines, like Radiohead and Elbow.
~ A.S. Van Dorston (Fast n Bulbous)
The Ghost Of Badon Hill is amazing once again. The less is more principle seems to work for the songs, turning the compositions into carriers of a longer arc, a story and a history. Dismissing the extra riffs, leaving off some of the fills, the extra lyrics and everything that wasn’t necessary to tell the tale. The result turns their progressive side into something highly engaging and compulsive, for once opening track Badon begins, you cannot help but listen to the entire legend once again. We’ve said it before, if you want to tell a story, it’s about setting the scene. And some bands are true masters in that respect. And with The Ghost Of Badon Hill, SERGEANT THUNDERHOOF has become one of them. As the wind gushes around you on that fateful hill, and the acoustic medieval-touched guitar is punctuated by a forlorn whistle, you will be swept up by the mist and carried away to another time and place. That song becomes so much more though, riddled with enchanting harmonies and powerful strides. Slowly building, with wistful vocals and a warrior’s drum march. And then that drum, like a subdued cannon blast echo from the past launching the composition forwards and into thundering metal, unhurried but so forceful. The guitars get to soar, to lift off, to fly. And so do the vocals. Which is possible due to the bass work and drums that accentuates every detailed rise minutely and in that fashion, lifts every tone to a higher plane of existence. No longer fleeting, the tones seem to linger and stay with you as the others wash over you, burying you, like the sands of time..
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)
