It’s the third Friday of the month
So get up, get up, get up, get up, get up
So cash your Doom Charts checks…”
I want to stress the fact again that the multitude of Contributors all do this thing because they love music. And heavy music even more! Most of us continue to search for everything heavy on a daily basis. And all of us search for that thing we cannot name. That lift enducing euphoria, that fill that gets you high and that riff that wants to resound throughout enternity. Below, you find twenty four albums that are all very special to the Contributors. Some older. Some from last month. Some even made the regular edition in some form. And when an album recives three blurbs and does not even make it to the regular edition, something very special must be going on… Check’m out! Check’m all out!
The following are professions of love and adoration by Doom Charts Contributors for albums they could not stop spinning. Each month, the Doom Charts critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and other sorts of heavy rock and metal albums. The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart which is published on the First Friday of the new month, monthly. However, sometimes a love is so great, but for whatever reason the album unfortunately did not make the published Doom Charts Edition or because there were so many contributors in love with that one album, that multiple blurbs were written, and only the one got published… Well, you can peruse that love here…
BIRD’S VIEW – HOUSE OF COMMANDO
Alternative Rock
Frankfurt, Germany
Drakkar Entertainment
BIRD’S VIEW is a young and upcoming band from Germany. Merely in their early 20s, the band has toured with big names such as Skid Row, Soulfly, and Dirty Honey, and has just released their sophomore album, House of Commando. Bird’s View’s sound can be described as primarily melodic alt-rock with stoney/grungy tendencies. There are also some high energy punk rock tunes dotted throughout their music. The most incredible thing about Bird’s View is their ability to create the sheer number of earworms that they do; both their albums are track-after-track of insanely infectious anthem-like tunes from start to finish. The high octane instrumentals and spirited, soaring vocals will have you blissfully singing and jamming along…it’s virtually impossible to listen to this album and not get a boost of energy and a wave of the most carefree, happy feeling.

BLACK PYRAMID – THE PATH OF TIMES ARE VAST
Old school Doom, Stoner, Metal
Northampton, Massachusetts, USA
Totem Cat Records
The review in my head was almost exactly the same as their own bandcamp blurb but better! In their own words: “BLACK PYRAMID play doom with the rumbling down-tuned tones of stoner metal gods but with the epic arrangements of old school metal and doom acts. Add to the sonic brew perfectly executed forays into vintage psych and progressive rock, along with the apocalyptic lyrical ravings about war, the occult, and general alienation, and you’ve got an accurate picture of what the band is all about.”
~ Tony Maim (Black Insect Laughter, Stoner HiVe)
BYSSHE – LA SIBYLLE SUR LE SABLE
Psych Rock, Folk Rock, Desert Rock
Les Fourgs, France
M&O Music
Beautiful, pastoral psychedelic folk rock that sways between each genre in a masterful balancing act. From jangly brightness to cosmic heaviness, BYSSHE have made a breathtaking record.
~ Kyle SB (Good Boy PR, Stoner HiVe)
BYSSHE was born in a deep forest in the North-East of France and this fact may explain why I feel a strong connection between the poetry of their music and nature. This album has a soft, meditative and introspective character using folk world instruments such as the udu or the shruti box. However, fuzz-fueled guitars will inject energy and strength to the songs. I appreciate the alternation of male and female voices of the singing duo. La Sybille Sur Le Sable is an album with a strong personality and this musical journey is definitely worth experiencing.
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T“ François (Metal Intégral)
CAIXAO – ENTRE O VELHO TEMPO FUTURO
Hard Rock, Progressive Rock, Stoner, Psych
Brazil
Glory Or Death Records
This was one of my favorite albums of September. It has a smooth flow and never stays in one spot for too long making it go by really quickly. I like the twangy guitars that have an almost surf vibe in a couple of spots. Don’t be intimidated by the the titles in Spanish, the singing is in English.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)
DEAD SACRAMENTS – THE PALE TEMPLE AND OTHERS
Doom metal, Epic doom, Stoner Metal/Doom
Chicago, Illinois, United States
Self-released
This album is a gargantuan experience! It consists of four massive slabs of doom, none of them under 10 minutes in length. This is the kind of music I like: long songs with a ton of depth and many great passages to them. It’s expansive and deep but not to the point where it meanders off or loses track of itself. The album is actually quite focused in every aspect, the song lengths running by smoothly. I suppose some bands, even doom ones, bloat their music for the sake of it. But that isn’t the case for “The Pale Temple and Others.” Every second is used because every second is needed. The songs don’t offer any real type of structure… this isn’t “verse, chorus, verse,” music and it’s all the better for it. This allows each song to sound truly adventurous with real discoveries to be made for the patient listener. This is world building at its finest: each song contributes to the album as a whole but each one is also a self contained world that offers its own rewards for exploration. This is definitely not an album that requires just one listen and you’re done. It needs to be experienced several times to truly appreciate it. That’s great because the songs are so engaging, you’re going to want to hear them again and again.

DEMON & ELEVEN CHILDREN – DEMONIC FASCINATION
Doom, Evil Blues
Guangzhou, China
SloomWeep Productions
Recorded live in 1 day, this is a great proto doom, stoner slab of solid scuzz. Filthy guitar tones and low-end madness give all the requirements I need to get though my humdrum day, nodding my head slowly as this blasts through my earphones.
~ Tony Maim (Black Insect Laughter, Stoner HiVe)
Last year’s demo ended up in my 2023 ‘Dirty Dozen’ for the Doom Charts. It consists of three heavy psych tracks that crackle and spit out an authentic,70’s vibe. Now we have DEMON & ELEVEN CHILDREN‘s proper debut full length,’Demonic Fascination‘ and boy, is it killer. Like a séance, vocalist Akinashi acts as the Medium, allowing the music to communicate through her voice and its trance like quality is in perfect contrast to the caustic, grainy, lo-fi sound carried over from the demo. However, what makes ‘Demonic Fascination‘ stand head and shoulders above last years demo is the enhancement of a much meatier stoner doom tone with reverb and wah heavy enough to warp time. Riffs are mighty, and the multitude of jams have been dipped in the same vat of acid used on the last recording. There is some evidence of herb induced stoner groove beloved of East Asian stoner doom bands but DEMON & ELEVEN CHILDREN is firmly rooted in the classic Italian style of occultism. The Witching Hour is upon us…
~ Steve Woodier (Anointing The Sick)
DEMON HEAD – THROUGH HOLES SHINE THE STARS
Goth, Occult Rock
Copenhagen, Denmark
Svart Records
Copenhagen, Denmark’s DEMON HEAD sounds as if the Sisters Of Mercy were a proto metal band. Or like if the Damned sounded a bit bigger. Or like if a goth, a punk, and a metalhead got into a fight by the smoking doors in high school and morphed into one, way more awesome, being. However you describe them, the band sounds excellent on their latest record, Through Holes Shine The Stars, which gives us eight tracks of occult tinged goth proto punk metal goodness. Put on your black and be ready to rock out as only goths can with Through Holes Shine The Stars.

DEVA SILENCE – MOON, MISERY AND A COUNTRY CHURCH
Doom, Stoner, Metal, Hard Rock
Forli, Italy
The Triad Records
This album isn’t so much Doom Metal as it is Heavy Metal with doomy aspects. While taking me a few times it doesn’t remind me of any artists in particular. Whatever it may be, one thing is for sure, its a great hard rocking album with some nice guitar action.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)
DOOMED & STONED – THE INSTRUMENTALISTS: VOL 6

FÁTIMA – EERIE
Doom, Grunge, Psychedelic Rock
Paris, France
Black Robes Records
FÁTIMA is a Parisian band who expertly weaves artful tapestries of doom-laden rock with ribbons of Oriental influence throughout, complete with a grungy vocal delivery. Eerie proves to be the band’s most layered, sophisticated release yet, on which their wide variety of creative influences shine through brilliantly in their eclectic style. Haunting, echoing melodies create vivid imagery that sets intricate scenes as stories both ancient and futuristic unfurl.

THE FLYING NORSEMEN – THE FLYING NORSEMEN
Psych, Prog
Trondheim, Norway
Apollon Records
THE FLYING NORSEMEN are from Norway. This makes sense. The debut, self-titled, record from these veteran musicians is four epic tracks leaning deep into the proggy and psychedelic 1970s, that sometimes make no sense, in the best kind of way. There is a lot going on in these four songs. Oh, and also it is sung in Norwegian, which makes it even more wonderfully confusing for this guy. No matter what the THE FLYING NORSEMEN are saying, I am digging their very out there proggy groove and mind-bending crazy song structures. Get ready for an experience.

GNOME – VESTIGES OF VERUMEX VISIDROME
Stoner Rock, Prog Rock
Antwerp, Belgium
Polderrecords
Our three favourite gnomes are back, two years after their excellent last album, King. Their two first singles were highly rated and the rest of the album is a as good as them. The energy, between Primus and RATM, is addictive and gives you the smile instantly. The production is quite good and it’s the perfect album to start the day in a positive vibe. I really enjoyed the progressive side of the album and the sound of the bass gave me goosebumps. GNOME are getting better albums after albums and they become a solid band in the Belgian stoner/prog scene. On the record, you’ll find a few bangers tunes that will give you the urge to headbang!
~ Edouard Dubuisson (Les chroniques d’Eddy, MetalUniverse)
GNOME is, in many ways, the Devo of the stoner/doom world, and not just because of their penchant for silly hats. In spite of a layer of humor, there’s no denying GNOME‘s instrumental prowess, songwriting chops, and ultra creative storytelling ability. With their new album, Vestiges of Verumex Visidrome, GNOME delivers their most sophisticated, layered, varied, and heaviest release to date. It’s still very much the GNOME we know and love, goofy moments and catchy headbangers included. This time, there’s a greater emphasis on instrumental and stylistic variety, but my favorite improvement has to be the massive increase in the amount of vocals. These things combined highlight GNOME‘s legendary yarn-spinning skills infinitely more (a quality demonstrated brilliantly on one of my favorite songs, The Ogre). Between the captivating tales, hooky riffs, and GNOME‘s trademark sense of witty humor, Vestiges of Verumex Visidrome almost feels like too much of a good thing…almost.

HYLKO – THE MAN COMES AROUND
Stoner, Sludge, Instrumental
Japan
Self-released
Sometimes less is more. With just bass, drums, and djembe, HYLKO managed to create a sonic world every bit as engaging as any five-piece band in the stoner rock world on their debut album, The Man Comes Around. They do so through an innovative and varied use of effected (and in a roundabout way I suppose affected as well) bass tones, creative playing and song structures, and (most importantly) killer riffs. Speaking of which, the album was mastered by Eternal Elysium’s own riff master, Yukito Okazaki!! While the lack of guitar (and vocals) may turn some people off, those people were never your real friends anyway. Buy the ticket, take the ride. This is one of the most fun albums I’ve heard a long while.
~ Ben Bellum (The Greatest Thing You’ve Never Heard)
A gritty, jazzed-up, fuzzed-out stoner psych manifesto dipped in a delicious sauce of Japanese weirdness and tribal percussion. A welcome assault to your eardrums.
~ Ronny Dijksterhuis (Stoner HiVe)
HYLKO is a very unique project from Japan that utilizes electric bass with drums and tribal instruments. While simple at face value, this combination along with Hylko’s thoughtful compositions create a massively immersive, bewitching, and heavy stoner/psych sound, proving that you can often do more with less.

INVERNOIR – AIMIN’ FOR OBLIVION
Death/doom, Melodic death/doom, Gothic doom
Rome, Lazio, Italy
Aural Music
“Aimin’ For Oblivion” is an extremely well written album that is captivating from start to finish. Its moody atmosphere is brought to life with rich, full Gothic influences. Melding perfectly into this tapestry of macabre musings is a firm grip on dark and deep death/doom. The result is an album that is as haunting and emotional as it is heavy and abrasive. However, it isn’t heavy in an aggressive way. It’s the layered emotions, the shades of gray that rest upon each other to create this special kind of oblivion. To me, that’s as heavy as anything in the universe, and certainly rivals even the most extreme music I could ever find.
The production is one of the many highlights that make the album standout so late in the year. It sounds amazing by offering a wide, open sound that captures every ghostly detail the band brings to the table across the album’s 8 song, 47 minute runtime. As expected, and appreciated, the songs are slow to mid-paced. This lack of a rush captures the true essence of doom and this album’s sound. The band’s approach to songwriting really allows each of these songs to unfurl in a very natural way—the album flows from beginning to end without any bloat.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)
KANT – PARANOIA PILGRIMAGE
Doom, Psychedelic Rock, Occult Rock
Aschaffenburg, Germany
Sound of Liberation Records
KANT is an up-and-coming band from Aschaffenburg, Germany, known for their high octane live shows and raw, yet hypnotic vintage sound. Taking all the best elements from the psychedelic 60s, traditional doom, and heavy metal, KANT has concocted something absolutely delicious. Their second album, Paranoia Pilgrimage, shows the band taking a more sinister approach to their sound, resulting in an album that has a conspicuous occult rock flair. The unfettered, expressive vocals really take the album to the next level, drawing the listener in deeply to its dark tales.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)
MORTAL BLOOD – HARBINGERS OF CHAOS
Doom Metal, Death/Doom, Blackened Doom, Gothic Doom
Baltimore, Maryland, United States
Self-released
MORTAL BLOOD’s brand of doom contains a lot of different elements, including Gothic, death, and black metal. It’s an interesting concept because even though there isn’t a shortage of band’s playing these styles, “Harbingers of Chaos” sounds like a unique experience. There is no doubt the album definitely has an apocalyptic atmosphere to it, the audio version of the cover art. The title track opens with a ominous guitar tone, one of the best on the album. Clean vocals litter the apocalyptic landscape as the drums ramp up the tension until the blackened cut through, razor sharp and as dangerous as the music. The drums have a sort of tribalistic thump to them that, mixed with the fantastic vocals, creates an urgent sound that carries with it an arcane and mysterious atmosphere. Another favorite song on the album for me is “Horde of the Blackened Sun.” Goddamn, what a song! The vocals are really up front in the mix, threatening to burst out and eviscerate the real world. The music is slow and melodic, but a dark melody that brings with it only the promise of a future undone—there is no hope to be found here. The highlight of the song for me just after the halfway park with this really out there, dismal melody from the guitar. It sounds like it could break at any minute, the insane world in which it thrives finally collapsing under its own weight. The album as a whole carries that vibe as well. The entire 40 minute run time is absolutely maddening—listening to this album on headphones is truly an experience! MORTAL BLOOD’s “Harbingers of Chaos” is a fantastic album that is as interesting and complicated as it is unnerving and despotic. It certainly has an unique sound and approach to doom metal, one that I found arresting and engaging. Definitely a highlight as 2024 moves into the next half.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)
NEHODA – NEHODA
Rock and Roll, alternative, stoner rock, grunge
Nashville Tn, USA
Self-released
There are a few different styles on display on this superb album. Grunge, stoner, alternative rock, hard rock and even a little Americana flavoring all make for a tasty little treat. I find myself coming back to this as I find it to have a certain allure, a little mysterious quality maybe. This one is a keeper.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)
OBJET – OBJET
Hard Rock, Progressive Metal, Stoner Metal
Portland. Maine
Self-released
Vocals on this are superb, the drumming exceptional, the bass work low luscious and bouncy but it is the powerful twin guitar attack that is the clincher. We are not talking dual harmonies, à la Thin Lizzy, Wishbone Ash, Judas Priest, here (though they can be found) we are talking fractured and jagged riffage rubbing up against each other sometimes in delicious unison sometimes in complete conflict, mesmerising stuff!
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)
PHANTOM HOUND – FROM BOOM TOWN TO GHOST TOWN
Grunge, Stoner, Psych
Oakland, CA
Glory Or Death Records
Jake Navarra has been the driving force in PHANTOM HOUND for a number of years now, with various events getting in the way of the band taking the next step. After years of playing, not playing, personal stuff, and all other things life throws at you, the band put out the excellent debut album, Mountain Pass, in March 2020, just in time for the world to collapse. But the band persevered, boosting their creativity during those dark times, and the result could not have been better, because their second album, From Boom Town to Ghost Town is breathtaking. Navarra is a history buff and loves his native Bay Area in California, so it makes sense that he wrote an album about the California gold rush. While not quite a concept record, the songs are all thematically related, creating an excellent flow to the sequencing of the record. The other big change to the PHANTOM HOUND sound is the addition of synths to the mix, taking the band’s sound to the next level. PHANTOM HOUND’s patience has paid off, and the result is From Boom Town to Ghost Town, which shows a love of music, the passion to create, and perseverance wins the day.

SBARCO – SBARCO
Heavy Rock, Alternative Rock
Milan, Italy
Argonauta Records
The debut album from Milan-based heavy/alternative rock trio SBARCO plays out much like the nautical adventure depicted on its cover. The first half of the album maintains a bright, optimistic alt rock tonality, with a punk rock undertow amidst the soaring guitars and vocal harmonies. Squarely in the middle of the album, you’ll find the song “The Dream”, which stands out beautifully with its eerie, mournful lull. Calming yet anticipatory, it’s the eye of the storm through which our vessel must pass. We cautiously move out of the eye and into choppy, storm-churned seas as illustrated on the latter half of the song “The Siren”. From here, the sailing and the resulting attitude of the sailors alternate between propitious and ominous, as metal textures dance with captivating tales and moods as woven by progressive rock. Suffice it to say, the “landing” is reached in a supremely heavy way, prompting this listener to wonder whether our adventurers were just particularly psyched about reaching dry land or if they were ultimately consumed by the tentacled creature depicted on the album cover. A giant octopus, or a more sinister monster of sorts? This is the stuff of legend. It is certain, however, that SBARCO‘s debut isn’t an expedition to be missed. Providing ample variety, intrigue, and skillful storytelling worked deeply into its composition, this album will bewitch you.

THE SINSEMILLIAN – THE COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS
Psychedelic Doom/Sludge

SPIRIT MOTHER – TRAILS
Heavy Psych, Heavy Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Buffalo, Los Angeles, Eastern Oregon, USA
Heavy Psych Sounds Records
What an album! I must admit I wasn’t that familiar with the band outside of seeing their name around before this record, so consider this as my first real exposure to SPIRIT MOTHER and their sound. The band are not only Psych Rock, but also Folk, Grunge, Garage, and Americana, quite a mixture of genres and they use these styles and sounds to take a wide variety of approaches to their songs. Speaking of the songs, you won’t find a weak one amongst them, they all have their own specific charm. The doomy, foreboding title track ‘Trails’ will hook you with its bass line and accented vocals with forced rhymes, while the amazing violin beefs up sections of the song almost acting as an organ with its haunting presence. You also have the more laid-back tracks such as ‘Below’ with its Americana and heavy psych mixture that will grab you with its thick atmosphere and emotion. One thing I’ve noticed about SPIRIT MOTHER is they flawlessly know how to drop an instrument and often even go down to a single instrument, whether it’s building up towards a chorus or falling back off of a climax, all according to the direction of the song. The break on ‘Wolves’ is one such example, where at the 1:23 mark the band drops off and the spectacular vocal harmonies hit, the slow buildup that follows shows the band not only knows how to play with the space between, but even silence plays a part as each layer comes in one at a time to a wonderful culmination.
~ Jon McGough (Stoner Rock Army, Stoner HiVe, Outlaws Of The Sun)
SPIRIT MOTHER is full of atmosphere, with their swirling guitars, psych folk leanings, and full-time violin player leading that charge on the Heavy Psych Sounds released Trails. There is a shoegaze vibe I get too, with some serious 90s influence ala bands like Swervedriver, Catherine Wheel, Slowdive, and maybe even very early Smashing Pumpkins. Band member SJ not only brings the violin to the party, as her haunting female background vocals partnered with Armand lead voice adds something even more ethereal to the ten songs on Trails, bringing a unique sound to the usual stable of HPS bands and a fresh take on some of the bands mentioned, with the Spirit Mother twist.

TOMMY AND THE TELEBOYS – GODS, USED, IN GREAT CONDITION
Stoner, alternative rock, heavy psych, psychedelic rock, space rock, sweaty electronics (and more)
Halle and Berlin, Germany
Noisolution
TOMMY AND THE TELEBOYS‘ debut full length ‘Gods, Used, In Great Condition‘ not only has an incredible album title, but it’s also packed to the brim with heavy, chameleonic rock suited for the casual and advanced listener alike. It’s easy to the ear with lots of toe-tapping, body-hopping, arm-swaying grooves, yet at the same time very challenging when you try to keep up with all the twist and turns thrown at you from all angles of music. Imagine stoner, heavy psych, alternative rock, psychedelic rock, space rock, an occasional electronic assault (and then some) thrown into one giant cocktail glass of pop sensibility and it won’t take much to get you punch-drunk with joy trying to decipher it all. One of the best and most enjoyable records I’ve heard in quite a while.
~ Ronny Dijksterhuis (Stoner HiVe)
ZEITGEBER – FELLOW PRISONERS OF THE SPLENDOUR AND TRAVAIL OF THE EARTH, PART 1
Jazz, Prog, Psych
Sydney, Australia
Art as Catharsis
The second full length from Sydney’s ZEITGEBER , the thoroughly titled Fellow Prisoners of the Splendour and Travail of the Earth – Part 1, packs a mighty wallop into just three compositions (comprising 6 total tracks) and 42 minutes. Blending stately, complex jazz with old school, not-quite-Scandanavian sounding prog, the band creates an absolute masterpiece of cinematic scope that would please fans of groups such as Onsegen Ensemble or Agusa. This was my first exposure to the band and while I’m sure some readers would complain about the lack of heavy fuzz or really any significant guitar to speak of, please don’t be mistaken: ZEITGEBER have devlivered one of the absolute best albums of the year, from any genre.
