25. HELL IS A CITY – NARROW SEAS / NEW!
1190 Points
Heavy Blues, Heavy Rock, Stoner Rock
Long Beach, California, USA
Self-released
HELL IS A CITY take some Led Zeppelin-esque heavy blues mix in some Seattle-like grunginess and then sprinkle the results with some crunchy fuzzy stoner/desert rock and dank dark doom, what they create with those ingredients is “Narrow Seas” a dish worthy of gracing the table of the gods.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)
24. STAINS OF AMBER – NO ONE WILL EVER BE THIS COOL AGAIN / NEW!
1200 Points
Heavy Rock, Stoner Rock, Desert Rock
Athens, Greece
Self-released
In NYC they say that the pizza and bagels are so good because of the tap water. Well in Greece I think we have seen a similar effect with the water but instead of making good food it makes great stoner bands. STAINS OF AMBER who formed 10 years ago but just released their first album are yet another great Greek heavy rock/stoner band and this album is proof of that. This came out late in the month and as far as I know no one had heard it prior to release. I had to re-shuffle my list of albums for the month as it seems other contributors did also because this was just too good to push aside. Great bluesy guitar driven heavy rock that we all love. Give it a listen, you won’t be disappointed.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)
23. CANYON COMPANY – WEIRD SCENES INSIDE THE CANYON / NEW!
1240 Points
Psych, Desert, Stonerrock
Netherlands
Off The Record Label
With their debut album “Weird Scenes Inside The Canyon“, the Dutch duo CANYON COMPANY have conjured up some top-class, murderously groovy, riff-heavy and, above all, authentic ozzy-o-siastic, Devilsugar-Psych/Desert/Stoner-Rock, bursting with original and unconventional creativity. This unmistakable sound of the album spins a Zenario ghost in front of my inner eye while listening to it. It’s as if Ozzy Osborne and Black Sabbath inhaled a heavy dose of Kyuss desert sand during their trip through the Californian desert and got into a musical philosophizing about old-time Blues and Punk/Garage Rock. If your heart beats for fat riffs and soul-vibrating grooves and you have a natural affinity for doom and are equally open to masterfully orchestrated lateral deviations within the aforementioned pillar genres, then let this phenomenal devil’s sugar by Tjeerd de Jong and Marc Fien melt in your mouth. You will appreciate the special, unique and refined touch of this work!
~ Mel Lie (Sunday’s Heavy Tunes)
22. FORGOTTEN KING – THE SEEKER / NEW!
1269 Points
Stoner Doom
Stavanger, Norway
Majestic Mountain Records
‘The Seeker‘ shows us that not all who wander are lost and the debut, solo project from the enigmatic Azul Josh (also of the band Kal-El) hits its mark as a strong, stoner doom focused offering with a clear narrative streak and unique, dynamic vocals. FORGOTTEN KING takes us on an impressively emotive and psychically stirring sojourn giving us an authentic glance at life and existence through Azul’s eyes and as we trek together through the well trodden and winding tropes of mental health, spirituality, our place in the infinite and the human ego, we are guided by thick, groovy riffs, entwined with plaintive, melodic crooning which erupts into jagged harshness in track 4, aptly entitled ‘Drag.’ Each of the six tracks is a transformative vessel of philosophical self discovery while fuzzy atmospherics and crunchy distortion prevail. At the end of this gripping release, we are left with the notion that both the journey and the destination are equally as important in the land of FORGOTTEN KING and on the continuing quest for enlightenment of our royal pilgrim.
~ Vesper Saturnine (The Doom Oracle, Spectral Ecstasy)
21. MOTORPSYCHO – NEIGH!! / NEW!
1290 Points
Alternative
Trondheim, Norway
Det Nordenfjeldske Grammofonselskab
After overstaying their welcome a bit during their extensive forays into progrock territory, MOTORPSYCHO are back to being their old self again. Previous album Yay! was a mainly laid-back affair recalling albums like It’s A Love Cult and Let The Eat Cake. New album Neigh!! consist of a collection of songs that didn’t fit on an album. But when put together on one, it ironically turns out to be the best album they’ve put out in quite a while. Vintage MOTORPSYCHO, covering every corner, nook and cranny of their career: from beautiful, laid-back semi-acoustic songs, via groove-driven mid-tempo alternative rock to an occasional outburst that borders on stoner. It’s all there, packed in that distinctive MOTORPSYCHO sound and executed to perfection.
~ Ronny Dijksterhuis (Stoner HiVe)
20. THE BLACK FURS – SONGS ABOUT LUST AND SELF DESTRUCTION / NEW!
1368 Points
Blues, Garage, Psych, Stoner, Doom
Argentina
Self-released
Psychedelic garage and doomed blues so punked up and stonerized, dripping with filth and oozing nastiness, its gonna leave stains on your speakers. Even though we hope the album will come out on wax. Spinning the new THE BLACK FURS vinyl Songs About Lust And Self Destruction on your brand new record player with fill the motor with grime and the needle will get stuck among all the tar and goo. But you like the dirt and you like to wallow in it, seducing yourself in the mirror with your tongue out and the whisky constantly spilling over your soused, salty and sweat soaked body…
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)
19. THE JESUS LIZARD – RACK / NEW!
1584 Points
Noise Rock
Chicago, IL, USA
Ipecac Recordings
I didn’t think we would ever see another THE JESUS LIZARD record. Not because they broke up in some fantastic and dramatic way; after Capitol dropped them from the label, after not knowing what to really do with the band after signing them at the time when every band that sniffed “alternative” or “grunge” was scooped up by majors, they called it quits (record label exec: “…but they did a split with Nirvana!!!”). There were a couple of successful reunion tours but I could not fathom a new record, plus singer David Yow really didn’t want to record new material, and he seems like a guy who would stand pretty firm with his decisions. To me, the band said all they were going to say album-wise, and all of said material is just different levels of wonderful, from the 1989 Pure EP to their last record, the criminally underrated Blue. Thank goodness I was wrong, because 26 years later we get Rack, the seventh THE JESUS LIZARD record, with all of the key players back together and sounding just amazing. You get all that you love about THE JESUS LIZARD, from the noise rock franticness, to the heavy alternative not quite grunge but not really sure how to label songs that even wind up being a little bit catchy this time around. This is top notch JL material that belongs next to their 90s and early 2000s classics.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)
18. DÖ – UNVERSUM / NEW!
1670 Points
Doom metal, Stoner Doom, Psychedelic
Helsinki, Uusimaa, Finland
Lay Bare Recordings
Is extreme stoner doom a genre? If DÖ’s “Unversum” is what it will sound like, then yes it should definitely become a thing. Of course, it is already out there but it has never been played like this before. Not only is “Unversum” built upon a foundation of mountainous groove, it also covers so much ground that the band can’t really be pigeonholed. Elements of black metal and sludge can be found among their brand of doom but the atmosphere is pure alien, spacey and psychedelic. Imagine being sucked into a black hole but instead of your guts pulled out from your belly button like spaghetti wrapped around a fork then scattered into nothingness, you have your guts pulled out from your belly button like spaghetti wrapped around a fork then scattered into nothingness…to be rebuilt into some sort of new consciousness inside a dimension that is turned upside down in every way possible. It’s a maddening trip through the other side, one which still has a focus and destination…however frightening it may be. What’s so impressive about the album is that it sounds dense as a planet but vast as pace. It’s a rare combination of hard hitting, head banging songs that work alongside liminal spaces to explore infinite possibilities.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)
17. CATAPULT THE SMOKE – A WHOLE NEW WORLD / NEW!
1746 Points
Heavy Rock, Stoner Metal
Mjölby, Sweden
Self-released
CATAPULT THE SMOKE are one of the most overlooked and underrated of Sweden’s rich roster of underground rock bands and that’s probably because they are not the most prolific of bands, in fact CATAPULT THE SMOKE albums are a bit like orbiting comets in that they only come around after a set number of years , which in CTS‘s case is roughly every seven. Those albums, filled with gritty riffs, gritty grooves and grittier vocals, are always worth the wait though and “A Whole New World” is no exception.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)
16. A FOREST MIGHTY BLACK – THE HEDONIST / NEW!
1980 Points
Stoner, Psych
Vicenza, Italy
Go Down Records
You know Janus, the two-faced god. Well, A FOREST MIGHTY BLACK could be the Janus of stoner rock: one raw and powerful face while the other is poetic and melodic. The Hedonist will tease you with its catchy riffs, will grab you with its hypnotic melodies and will finally hook you with its irresistible groove. I would add that this album contains surprising passages and that the creativity of the band constantly rekindles the listener’s attention. I don’t know what the other Doom Chart Contributors will decide, but as far as I’m concerned, this is the album I’ve pinned to the top of my voting list this month. A must-have.
~ Thierry “Hedonis-T“ François (Metal Intégral)
15. MIRROR QUEEN – DYING DAYS / NEW!
2590 Points
Proto, Prog, Seventies, Hard Rock
New York, New York, USA
Tee Pee Records
NYC’s MIRROR QUEEN is back, and this is very exciting given how much I loved their last one, Inviolate, from 2022. For those who are not aware and to give a comparison, the band mentions Blue Oyster Cult, UFO, Camel, Wishbone Ash and Iron Maiden in their bio, so yeah, you know this band kicks ass, and they continue kicking on their new record, Dying Days. Anything on Tee Pee Records is pretty much an automatic buy, and given that MQ main man Kenny Kreisor is also the main man of Tee Pee, it is safe to assume that this one is going to be killer. I was not disappointed, as Dying Days continues the awesomeness the band has been bringing, leveraging 70s US hard rock and proto metal and blending it with NWOBHM influences creating seven more outstanding tracks to add to their already great discography. Kreisor’s axe work is next level and is the highlight of a record filled with a whole bunch of them. Killer stuff.

14. STAR BEAST – STAR BEAST / NEW!
3081 Points
Psychedelic Alternative Rock
Toronto, Ontario, USA
Black Throne Productions
This exceptional album takes you into the heart of 60’s psychedelia, layered with 90’s alternative rock influences. The results are a chemical fusion of stoner, psychedelic, and desert rock with its own brand of DNA.
~ Michael D’Amato (Playgroundz Rocks, D’Amato Production)
13. CASTLE – EVIL REMAINS / NEW!
3185 Points
Stoner, Doom, Proto, Heavy Metal
San Francisco, California, USA
Hammerheart Records
As we hit September and head into fall, what’s better than a Pumpkin Spice Latte? How about some spooky and evil proto stoner doom from CASTLE for the first time since 2018! The San Francisco, California band is back with a worldwide record deal with Hammerheart Records and their follow up to the awesome record Deal Thy Fate, Evil Remains. Some reference points would be bands like Doctor Smoke, Sahg, Early Moods, Wytch, and Witchcryer, but the trio is not some generic proto band with female vocals. CASTLE has and still does stand out, and Evil Remains does so even more, as this is their best sounding record with Elizabeth Blackwell’s vocals having never been recorded better. Her and her partner in crime Mat Davis are as tight as ever too, with Davis absolutely ripping it up on guitar, creating some of the best proto stoner doom of their career.

12. BRANT BJORK TRIO – ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE DESERT / NEW!
6176 Points
Desert Rock
Palm Desert, California, USA
Duna Records
BRANT BJORK is obviously desert rock royalty (dude was a founding member of Kyuss and in Fu Manchu, doesn’t get much more royal than that), but even with that high status he does not rest on his laurels, because this dude is busy. There is no slacker in this Stöner, as Bjork seems to have something from one of his projects dropping seemingly every couple of months. There is a Stöner live record coming out imminently and then there is this fun little chill desert rock record, Once Upon A Time In The Desert, under the BRANT BJORK TRIO moniker. This version includes longtime collaborators Mario Lalli on bass and his usual go-to drummer for his solo material, Ryan Güt. As I mentioned, Bjork has a lot of material, but I can safely say, for me, this is one of my favorite records he has done in a while. Why, you ask? First off, the overall vibe of this record is excellent and shows that you can be chill and still rock, no need to compromise on one or the other. Second, the production of this record is spot on. The band sounds great and the “desert” feel is ever-present. Bjork’s voice sounds great and the guitar tone is wonderful. Third, look at who is in the band; you can feel these guys have developed quite a chemistry and a vibe that takes this BB material to the next level.

11. LEGIONS OF DOOM – THE SKULL 3 / NEW!
6555 Points
Doom
Chicago, Il, USA
Tee Pee Records
I guarantee there is not going to be an album this year or for the foreseeable future that will have more of a profound effect on me than LEGIONS OF DOOM’s The Skull 3. Eric Wagner’s passing in 2021 took a huge toll on me, given when and how and what we all were experiencing in 2021, and just how much he had been a part of my musical life for so long. Trouble’s Manic Frustration is not only my number two album of all time but is also one of the most important records in shaping what my musical taste is today. The Skull 3 is the absolute perfect way to celebrate Eric Wagner’s legacy and ensure that it lives on, finishing these eight tracks in the most respectful, realized, and straight up awesome way. Musically, taken all of the other stuff out of it, this is the traditional doom record of the year. Adding all of the other stuff around it makes it even more special. LEGIONS OF DOOM did this right, thank you, boys.

10. KANT – PARANOIA PILGRIMAGE / NEW!
7599 Points
Heavy Psych, Heavy Rock, Retro, Doom
Ashaffenburg, Germany
Sound of Liberation Records
KANT blends a retro sound with proto-metal riffs and psychedelic filled atmospheres taking the listener through varying states of euphoria. From the underlying doom presence within the vocal delivery and production, to the Black Sabbatarian influences, Paranoia Pilgrimage takes you on a wild ride through occultism and heavy mysticisms. At times bluesy, other times progressive, all the time on point. The rawness of the recording elevates the performance, highlighting the superbly high energetic rhythm section and the soaring guitars, as well as the storytelling of the compelling, almost devilish vocals. Songs like ‘Baby Yaga’ and ‘Paranoia Pilgrimage’ keep the doom flame burning while tracks like ‘Traitor’s Lair’ and ‘Rainbird’ have a blues-soaked sentiment accompanied with heavy psych that’s mellow and serene. While these may seem like opposite sides of the musical spectrum, KANT never make it seem they are straying off the path, in fact it’s a welcomed treasure trove of contrasts that any fan of heavy music will adore. This is a band you will most certainly want to keep on your radar and Paranoia Pilgrimage is an album you KANT miss!

9. ALUNAH – FEVER DREAM / NEW!
8085 Points
Hard Rock,Stoner Rock
Birmingham, UK
Heavy Psych Sounds Records
ALUNAH‘s Fever Dream blends stoner rock with hard rock and psychedelic undertones. The ethereal vocals, intertwined with the band’s impeccable sound and sheen tone, create a vivid and lucid image, as reflected on the album’s cover. This exceptional album ventures into various rock subgenres, ensuring an interesting and dynamic listening experience. Top notch!

8. CURSE THE SON – DELIRIUM / NEW!
11224 Points
Doom, Proto, Grunge, Stoner
Hamden, Connecticut, USA
Ripple Music
CURSE THE SON and its main man, Ron Vanacore, have a plan, and have executed that plan perfectly across the last 15 years and five records, with Delirium being the pinnacle. Why do I love Delirium so much? CURSE THE SON has developed a trademarked sound, and that sound rules, and Delirium keeps this sound up, with glorious results. Ron’s trademark voice and guitar tone is there in all of its glory across the nine tracks that all just kill. Ron’s songwriting has stepped up too, keeping the dark vibes ever present but deepening his lyrical content even more. It seems strange calling something so dark glorious, but this is what it is; a perfectly dark and wonderful record that should be experienced by all who love heavy (in all ways) rock.

7. SPIRIT MOTHER – TRAILS / NEW!
12550 Points
Heavy Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Los Angeles, California, USA
Heavy Psych Sounds Records
SPIRIT MOTHER‘s highly-anticipated second album, Trails, maintains the band’s base of folk and retro rock, swirling with strong notes of psychedelia, alternative, and wisps of occult magic. This time, their music is covered in a noticeable veil of darkness, resulting in an album that’s both haunting and enthralling, with the power to both soothe and enchant with trance-inducing tones. That is, until the occasional throaty, bloodcurdling scream from the vocals jars you in the most delightful way. Trails is a savory experience, a winding path meant to be hiked slowly with wonder and appreciation, composed of various terrains, twists and turns. My favorite thing about this album is the vivid imagery it evokes in my mind as I float along on its spooky vapor, sending me to the edge of a dense forest at sunset, the chill air and acrid smell of wood smoke burning in my lungs as I journey down the tangle of trails within.

6. GNOME – VESTIGES OF VERUMEX VISIDROME / NEW!
15663 Points
Stoner, Progressive, Rock
Antwerp, Belgium
Polderrecords
From the opening guitar parts, you’ll realize that Vestiges of Verumex Visidrome is a headbanger with infectious riffs and evolving changes. Also, within the first few minutes you’ll discover the oddity and weirdness (I promise in a good way) that is GNOME. I don’t believe anyone else sounds quite like them, they’re like a Qotsa/Primus illegitimate GNOME baby that grew up dropping acid and listening to 90’s Stoner Rock. The grooving drums, funk filled bass, and killer riffs navigate through the progressive- stoner framework and righteous jams all while having a tongue in cheek approach and tons of fun along the way. These guys are all over the place (again, in a good way) with spunky time changes to keep you on your toes, serious stoner hooks to head nod to, great vocals to sing along with, but also their own quirky additions that will put a smile on your face. Who expected a saxophone solo? I mean damn! While GNOME may not take themselves too seriously, this is a seriously great album, Vestiges of Verumex Visidrome is highly addictive and you’ll find yourself listening to it on repeat. Another way for GNOME to say, hooray!

5. PHANTOM HOUND – FROM BOOM TOWN TO GHOST TOWN / NEW!

4. LUNA SOL – VITA MORS / NEW!
18147 Points
High Desert Heavy Blues
Denver, Colorado, USA
Ripple Music
Some albums are just special. You can tell from the first few notes that there is something happening that will be with you for a long time, maybe even the rest of your life. I have had a few experiences with albums that immediately stuck and never left rotation, even though the years and shifting personal tastes. The record becomes a part of you, it touches you, it makes you feel something every time you spin it. I think I found the next album for me that does that, the new record from LUNA SOL, Vita Mors. You will know Dave Angstrom most likely as the guitarist from Hermano, but do not sleep on LUNA SOL as just another side project. This version of the band is completely different from other incarnations, but keeps the spirit of the original idea alive. This is heavy blues rock perfection filled with filthy riffs, excellent songwriting, Dave’s best vocal performance ever, and just an overall vibe of love for what they all do to create music together. There is so much love on Vita Mors, be it Dave leveraging all of his influences, the inclusion of his family on interludes and even in songs, the personal touch in all of his lyrics, and love just woven into the fabric of the 15 tracks on this new classic. A generational record.

3. BLUE HERON – EVERYTHING FADES / NEW!
26048 Points
Stoner, Doom, Heavy Psych
Albuquerque, NM, USA
Blues Funeral Recordings
Damn, that was heavy. That was my initial response when I listened to the new BLUE HERON record, Everything Fades, for the first time. It is also the reaction after the first dozen or so, and every other one after, because this bad boy is a crusher. Everything Fades is nine tracks that are the definition of heavy in stoner rock today and should be the prototype for bands who want to bring it. The riffs, the vocals, the subject matter, the tone, the vibe, the title…there is nothing not heavy about this Everything Fades. The drum work on this album is fantastic too, really pushing that heavy button, so I need to call out how awesome Ricardo Sanchez’s work is here. BLUE HERON and it is here to crush your skull and your soul with Everything Fades, and everything does, except how awesome this record is.

2. SLOMOSA – TUNDRA ROCK / NEW!
40448 Points
Stoner Rock, Desert Rock
Bergen, Norway
Stickman Records
SLOMOSA knew that they wanted their sophomore album to be a natural continuation of their highly successful debut, while incorporating some darker elements and more melody to represent their emotional side. The band accomplishes this and then some on Tundra Rock, named for their specific heavy riffing yet impassioned brand of stoner/desert rock. SLOMOSA‘s sound is expanded upon even further here, their gritty stoner/desert textures gathering even more depth and dimension, surrounding the listener like a sandstorm (or perhaps a blinding blizzard). Rather than settle for playing one genre incredibly well, SLOMOSA ambitiously (and successfully) adds in a hint of grunge and even experiments with the pacing of techno on one song. However, my favorite thing about Tundra Rock remains my favorite thing about SLOMOSA as a band: hearing their soaring, relatable, heartfelt melodies against a massive wall of sound, a combination that gives me cold chills every time. To say that the sky is the limit for SLOMOSA would be a massive understatement.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)
1. PSYCHLONA – WARPED VISION / NEW!
56420 Points
Stoner Rock, Desert Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Bradford, United Kingdom
Magnetic Eye Records
Warped Vision, the fourth full-length album from UK stoner/psych masters PSYCHLONA, leans heavily into the band’s psychedelic influences while continuing to evolve into a more atmospheric sound. Make no mistake, PSYCHLONA is still as riff-driven as ever, keeping things heavy and immersive but never bogged down. PSYCHLONA expertly harnesses the contrast between the delicacy of psychedelic rock and the burliness of stoner, with their songs as wispy and flowing as smoke one minute and barreling across the desert with massively heavy riffage the next. The most notable difference on Warped Vision is its lyrical deep dive into some tougher topics, which is executed in a very open and honest way. This feels like a very personal album for PSYCHLONA, filled with fond memories, heartache, and frustrations, but Warped Vision takes plenty of time to celebrate the good times too.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)
PSYCHLONA delivers a collection of songs that feels both timeless and forward-thinking. With Warped Vision this release cements their place as a formidable force in the psychedelic desert rock scene.
~ Michael D’Amato (Playgroundz Rocks, D’Amato Production)
They hail from the haunted forests of Bradford and have already graced our ears with three wonderful albums. And now the PSYCHLONA four are back with their fourth record: Warped Vision. Two members left, but a new guitarist and bassist were soon recruited so the PSYCHLONA ship could move forward. For move they do! You and me and the Earth itself. Even though the sound of these cosmic stonerrockers got a hue of blue and a spot of bluesy influences, they still psych and space out whenever they can. If the energy is right, they allow their sound to fly away on a magic carpet towards the furthest planet known to man. I’m game! Let’s Go!
