“What the Doom Charts know is a drop, what we don’t know is an ocean…”
~ Isaac Newton (probably misheard quote)
As we enter July we look back at the months passed and publish the Doom Charts, June 2024 edition. Voted for by many of the bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers braving the Heavy Underground. As you peruse the list you will notice that there are a lot of self-released albums on the list this month. Cause in this glorious age of independent music this is entirely possible and much easier than during the ages before. A plus for labels perhaps? Cause with one album out already gathering attention, a newly signed band will hit the ground running. It might also allude to the fact there is a lot of talent out there, constantly bopping to the surface for us to discover. No less than 207 albums received votes this month. And apparently the Contributors weren’t done yet with one from the month before, cause one album carried over from May. Which happens less and less, due to the sheer amount of great music released daily. One Contributor’s statement after submitting his list might also serve as proof for that fact: “Aaaaaaaaah, I forgot to put GREENLEAF on my list…”
Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe. Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums. The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below. This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

25. KING BASTARD – FROM WHENCE THEY CAME / NEW!
1072 Points
Doom Metal, Psychedelic Rock, Stoner Metal
Stony Brook, New York, USA
Self-released
At first I didn’t think I was digging this too much. I thought it was gonna be low and slow for the entire time but it isn’t and I dig the fuck out of this. KING BASTARD describes them self as Psychedelic Filth and I think that’s spot on. I love how it’s spacey and out there it is at times along with the sludge. The psychedelic stuff compliments the filth perfectly and vice versa. Multiple listens uncover more layers revealing the absolute brilliance of these four songs. At approximately a half hour long I’d say this is definitely made to listen all the way through. The couple samples are cool AF too and fit like a glove.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)
24. GRIM COLOSSUS – DESCENT INTO MADNESS / NEW!
1205 Points
Doom Metal, Stoner Doom
Sweden
Self-released
From my understanding, the album tells a story of a man who, after diving into the occult, becomes haunted by nightmares and visions. The atmosphere of the music definitely goes alongside the story, offering a grim and horror filled experience. The production is fitting as well, just raw enough to add girth and grit. Despite the subject matter, this is not extreme doom. Instead, the experience is told in a much more traditional style of doom. Comparisons to Candlemass would not be wrong but I find this to be darker and more melancholic than a lot of other bands who try the old school doom worship. This is doom just how it should be played: low, slow, and full of despair. With that being said, the songs do speed up when needed. GRIM COLOSSUS’ “Descent Into Madness”, is a great album that tells a story of that descent through both lyrics and music. It’s a dark, brooding adventure that offers a lot of replay value, if you are willing to walk a path to darkness.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)
23. CRYPT SERMON – THE STYGIAN ROSE / NEW!
1296 Points
Epic Doom Metal, Trad Metal
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
Dark Descent Records
On their third full length, The Stygian Rose, CRYPT SERMON have upped their game significantly. The riffs bite harder, the solos pop and sear, Brooks Wilson’s doomed wail conjures more spirits from underworld. Beginning with the powerful dirge of Glimmers in the Underworld, CRYPT SERMON make clear that this is the album where they step out from the shadow of Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus and emerge a doomed beast of their own design. In short, CRYPT SERMON have arrived. Bask in their turgid dirges!
~ Ben Bellum (The Greatest Thing You’ve Never Heard)
22. DUNERIDER – LONG TRIP / NEW!
1359 Points
Stoner, Sludge, Doom, Psych
Paris, France
Self-released
Tune down and drop out with the latest effort from French one man band DUNERIDER. This is quite the headtrip, as each of the seven songs seems to get lower and lower as the impossibly fuzzy and sludgy psych doom takes you to all parts of the lower end. Filthy fuzz and clean vocals come together, forming some kind of heavy psych doom monster that comes at you through the underneath and drags you back down into its subterranean desert lair.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)
21. OKOLYT – RESTLESS / NEW!
1458 Points
Hard Rock, Stoner Rock
Bremen, Germany
Self-released
OKOLYT very accurately describes their music as “stony hard rock”, harnessing both the retro vibe and raw power of old school heavy rock and the darkness and grit of stoner/doom. The hard rock element is provided primarily by the guitar, reminiscent of riffs of decades past in many places. On the other side of the equation, sinister, crawling bass is a constant throughout, representing OKOLYT’S stoner influences beautifully. On top of that, both percussion and vocals are incredibly adaptive as the style and mood of the music shifts. It probably goes without saying that this makes for a ton of variety on RESTLESS, and a tremendously fun listen from start to finish for fans of a multitude of genres.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)
20. CAUSA SUI – FROM THE SOURCE / NEW!
1897 Points
Psychedelic Rock, Stoner Rock, Krautrock
Odense, Denmark
El Paraiso Records
Danish instrumental psych virtuosos CAUSA SUI are back with their seventh studio album. This four-track release paints vivid but serene auditory panoramas of sultry nights, gentle waves, unexpected storms, and lazy daydreams, just in time for the peak of summer. With FROM THE SOURCE, CAUSA SUI continues to deliver their brand of immersive, multi-faceted sound that has a way of both hypnotizing you into meditative bliss and keeping you on your toes with ever-evolving sonic stories.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, Screaming From The Heavy Underground)
19. BUS THE UNKNOWN SECRETARY – WE ARE THE NIGHT / NEW!
1920 Points
Heavy Metal, Stoner Doom
Athens, Greece
Sounds Effect Records
Ever listen to an album and spend the whole time thinking “This reminds me of somethin…”? That’s what this album is, a whole album of unexpected stylistic switches that all come together like a quirky tribute to the early days of heavy metal. Part 70s proto-metal, early 80s NWOBHM, thrash, and crossover, all of which is kind of tied together by a stoner doom baseline. With a rhythmn section that might owe more than a bit to Iron Maiden, dueling lead guitars, endless hooks, and harmonized vocals, there’s a lot of to love about this album!
~ Remi VL (Remi Post Too Many Links)
18. VEXING HEX – SOLVE ET COAGULA / NEW!
2016 Points
Occult Rock, Doom, Pop
Illinois
Wise Blood Records
VEXING HEX is one of the more unique bands I have heard recently. It’s hard to pigeonhole their sound because they change genres like most people (hopefully) change their underwear. As a whole, I would say it is occult rock but it’s also so much more. Elements of punk, doom, pop, stoner, traditional metal are intertwined into their song structures. Throw in some prog, grunge, a hefty dose of the 80’s, and even some thrash…and you might have a good idea as to what they sound like. Ultimately, however, VEXING HEX prove with “Solve Et Coagula” they don’t sound like anyone but themselves. VEXING HEX’s “Solve Et Coagula”, is one of the best surprises I’ve heard this year and a wholly unique experience. It’s just heavy enough to satisfy metalheads, not overly heavy enough to alienate non-metalheads, and has more than enough variety that even people who don’t even like rock music will still find themselves headbanging (or even dancing) to these catchy occult tunes.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)
17. EARTH TONGUE – GREAT HAUNTING / NEW!
2101 Points
Rock, Garage, Noise, Punk, Psych, Fuzz, Occult
Wellington, New Zealand
In The Red Records
The EARTH TONGUE couple are back with a new gothic inspired, occult infused garage rocking madhouse! The Great Haunting features nine tracks of blistering high energy, noisy clamor, that will make you run grinningly along with a zombie stampede or dance like a monkey with all those axe murderers waiting in your closet! The two know how to make the chilling sound absolutely exhilarating!
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)
16. HUNTSMEN – THE DRY LAND / NEW!
2168 Points
Americana, Doom, Folk, Sludge, Stoner Metal
Chicago, Illinois, USA
Prosthetic Records
Everything we cherish about “underground rock” is encapsulated within “The Dry Land“, the albums masterful blending of extreme metallic heaviness, progressive complexity and folk-like ethereality is truly jaw-gaping. Each song on this stunning album of the year contender is a masterpiece in it own right, the epitome of the term “all killer no filler”.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)
15. STONE NOMADS – BEYOND THE GATES / NEW!
2187 Points
Stoner, Doom, Sludge
Houston, Texas, USA
Gravitoyd Heavy Music
Prepare for the bludgeoning as STONE NOMADS unleash their brand of savagery upon the world. Thunder rolls from the depths and sulfur rises. Startled breathing occurs from all who are present. Pure volume bleeds through sludge drenched speakers, pulling oxygen from the skies. Well balanced production pushes the strength of these riffs with a clean vocal presentation that occasionally dips into a touch of sinister grumble. This is the ideal type of EP that leaves us wanting more. Where the shadows begin to gather, these stoner doom songs will become their soundtrack before overtaking our world with darkness.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)
14. SHADOW WITCH – ESCHATON (THE END OF ALL THINGS) / NEW!
2211 Points
Heavy psych rock, Hard Rock, Proto-metal, Stoner rock
Kingston, NY, USA
Argonauta Records
Those who remembered the first three SHADOW WITCH albums were waiting for this fourth one with great impatience. Eschaton (The End of All Things) rewards our wait and everyone will surely have been satisfied. The problem is that no one can say who is the most brilliant artist in this band. Is it this man with the low-tuned, swirling bass? Is it the human metronome behind the drums? Is he the one wielding the bluesy axe so perfectly? Is it that singer-actor with the versatile voice? The answer is the whole cocktail which mostly sounds like an unstable blend of heavy blues, hard rock and more that you would think served by a 70s legendary band. If you miss the ancient days when a rock album wasn’t locked into just one genre, try this one!
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-Shadow“ François (Metal Intégral)
13. WEEDEVIL – PROFANE SMOKE RITUAL / NEW!
2236 Points
Doom, Heavy Metal, Stoner Rock
São Paulo, Brazil
DHU Records
Brazil’s WEEDEVIL cite their influences as Sabbath, Windhand, Acid King, and Lucifer, and those influences are evident in their music, yet they are not mere imitators. While WEEDEVIL‘s sound is a composite of its influences, it is a sound not defined by those influences.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)
12. FANGUS – MEET THE REAPER / NEW!
2244 Points
Proto-Metal, Stoner
Montreal, Canada
Self-released
FANGUS hail from Montreal and their potent blend of Proto-Metal, Stoner and Retro Rock delivers on every level! Snarling organs, thick riffs and potent vocals all combine to create a hard-rocking monster in the vein of Sir Lord Baltimore, Bang, Leaf Hound etc… Thoroughly enjoyable album!
~ Stevie Reek (Howls from The Hollows, Doomed&Stoned, Stoner HiVe)
11. REDWOOD – DRY RIVERS / NEW!
2928 Points
Stoner, Psych, Doom
California, USA
Self-released
Drifting in on a cloud of psychedelic smoke, the Dry Rivers EP by REDWOOD is laced with magic dust and heavy blues driven riffs. The foundation of these jams are the essential vitamins and minerals of a stoner rock diet that every growing fan needs. A healthy dose, in fact. The band is standing firmly amongst the rhythms of our swirling universe and grounded firmly to desert vibes that create a vibrant song crafting ecosystem in which to thrive. Psychedelics pour from the skies and feed all that grows in this outlying world. The vocals speak out over endless grooves, ripping bass runs and distorted sound waves carve the way for REDWOOD to sustain firmly rooted in the lands they now call their home.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)
10. BIRDSTONE – THE GREAT ANTICIPATION / NEW!
3234 Points
Heavy Blues, Progressive Psychedelic
France
Self-released / La Cage
French trio BIRDSTONE cover a lot of ground on The Great Anticipation, leaning into blues-soaked heavy psychedelic with a healthy dose of progressive rock. The rich fusion of dreamy blues, spacey psychedelic passages, punchy riffs, and dynamic, powerful vocals makes for one of the most captivating albums of the year.
~ Mitch Kline (DoomyRiffs.com)
9. WYNDRIDER – REVIVAL / NEW!
7540 Points
Stoner, Doom, Rock
Tennessee, USA
Electric Valley Records
Revival by WyndRider blends slow, southern charm into their own brand of bluesy, stoner rock. Loud, fuzzy amps rumble from the hills of Tennessee straight into your stereo as WyndRider unveil their newest release, Revival. Step forward and be blessed by the riff. This awakening services the almighty music gods of stoner jams and desert dwellers. The production is solid and clean vocals drift seductively over pharaonic songwriting. It is powerful in all of the best ways. Smoke slowly rolls in as this revival begins and all who are in attendance shall feel the fire.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)
8. STONEKIND – HOLLOW GROUND / NEW!
7794 Points
Hard Rock, Stoner, Fuzz, Desert Rock, Doom
North Carolina, USA
Self-released / Electric Spark Records
STONEKIND are back with their second full-length album. After a great EP and debut they certainly do not disappoint with this either. Stoner rock that’s fuzzy and heavy. Heavy enough that you could call it Stoner Metal at times. But why label it at all, in essence it is great music period.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)
7. VOID COMMANDER – ALIEN QUEEN / NEW!
8930 Points
Stoner Metal, Heavy Blues, Hard Rock
Karlskrona, Sweden
Majestic Mountain Records/Interstellar Smoke Records
Swedish bands have a history of blending fuzzy stoner/hard rock with aspects of heavy blues, think Graveyard, Kanmchatka and Horisont, you can also add VOID COMMANDER to that list with the only difference being that VOID COMMANDER‘s blending’s often tend to lean towards the more rootsier end of the spectrum. The bands latest album “Alien Queen” finds the band struggling to decide whether they want to be Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd or All Them Witches, however what may be a struggle for the band is for the listener all win.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)
6. REZN – BURDEN / NEW!
10956 Points
Doom, Psych, Rock
Chicago, Illinois, USA
Sargent House Records
Almost immediately on ‘Indigo’ you’re hit with the heavy bottom end of the bass that’s boosted up in the mix that is a constant throughout the whole album, REZN slowly draw you in with their distinctive sound, the drone-like doomy soundscapes and the celestial vocals on songs like ‘Instinct’ and ‘Collapse’ that call to you from deep within the furthest reaches of empty space. The track ‘Soft Prey’ has the remarkable saxophone that is such a vital part of the REZN sound while exploring more into the heavy psychedelic realm with lyrics that speak of being locked within ones own mind or personal hell with a means to escape but the fear of what’s to come. ‘Chasm’ is one of the heavier tracks finishing the album with a cataclysm of drums with hefty riffs feeding back to an abrupt end. REZN continues churning out great albums with never too much time in between releases. Burden only cements the fact that they are an instant buy and a true powerhouse in the heavy underground. I am just as fascinated by them now as I was when I first heard their debut album back in 2017.
~ Jon McGough
5. RIFFLORD – 39 SERPENT POWER / NEW!
11704 Points
Stoner, Thrash, Doom, Metal
South Dakota, USA
Ripple Music
Having RIFFLORD back in our musical lives is a wonderful thing, and having them back in our lives on Ripple Music makes this even better, because the new record, 39 Serpent Power, is just a gigantic beast of heaviness coming from the best label in heavy rock. The first record in six years and full-length number three overall is the heaviest and darkest record from the band yet, with crazy man Wyatt Bartlett leading the way across the eight tracks of foundation shaking metal. Seriously, this is some heavy ass metal…forget the stoner and whatever other labels you have put on these guys in the past. The 70s are over and we are now closer to the 80s thrash than anything else, and I am here for it.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)
4. HORSEBURNER – VOICE OF STORMS / NEW!
13961 Points
Stoner, Sludge, Progressive, Metal
Parkersburg, West Virginia, USA
Blues Funeral Recordings
All paths and the many roads traveled have led HORSEBURNER to this point as they continue to cultivate and expand their craft, bringing their brand of progressive sludge stoner metal to the masses. I swear the riff on ‘Heavens Eye’ with that little stutter and guitar harmony sounds like it could seriously be on either of the classic Baroness albums Red or Blue, while the seven plus minute assault of ‘Hidden Bridges’ contains everything that HORSEBURNER is within one track. Excellent vocal hooks, melody, and chorus make for a extraordinary tune. The dynamic bass runs and hard hitting drum flourishes are the backbone, while the twin guitars attack from the front. Harmonic leads but also a focus on the riff, and if you’re a fan of solos, there are three! Voice of Storms is a reflection of HORSEBURNER‘s maturity in musicianship along with songwriting and I feel it’s their most accomplished album to date, so do yourself a favor and check it out.
~ Jon McGough
3. SONS OF ARRAKIS – VOLUME II / NEW!
27552 Points
Stoner, Desert, Doom, Sci-Fi Rock
Montreal, Québec, Canada
Black Throne Productions
The Montreal based sci-fi rock/stoner/doom sensation SONS OF ARRAKIS is back with Vol.II, two years after Vol.I. Vol.I has been a favorite for lots of Doom Charts reviewers. Inspired by the universe of Frank Herbert’s novel Dune, SONS OF ARRAKIS has a unique sound identity, deep and powerful as hell. Epic guitar riffs, desertic atmosphere and a hint of psychedelism, it all comes together to spend more than half an hour of a galactic trip. The album is even better than the previous one. Especially the melodic side and the pace of the songs. The voice of Frédéric Couture is also a highlight that draws my attention. After 5 listens, I’ve been transported by that fantastic universe that the four musicians have created together. You can feel the alchemy between them and the result is a masterpiece of the genre and probably in the top 5 of my albums of the year.
~ Edouard Dubuisson (Les chroniques d’Eddy, MetalUniverse)
2. FU MANCHU – THE RETURN OF TOMORROW / NEW!
34468 Points
Rock, Stoner, Desert
San Clemente, California, USA
At The Dojo Records
Is there a more consistent band than FU MANCHU, both in sound and in quality? To say you know what you are going to get when a new band puts out an album can be a compliment or it could be a complaint. For the latter, some bands you want to see expand out from their comfort zone and break out into new territory. Grow as a band musically. When said band just puts out a record with the same old sound from them you may feel disappointed. FU MANCHU is not that band, as all I want them to do is play FU MANCHU songs and just rock. Give me riffs, give me Scott Hill’s unique, always- a-bit- buzzed vocals, give me Bob Balch’s amazing solos, give me those trademarked tempos and tones. FU MANCHU are perfect just the way they are, and their first album in six years and their 13th overall, The Return Of Tomorrow, is proof of this, and also a very fitting name for this collection of 13 tracks, a double album at this point in their career, with zero filler tracks no less!
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)
1. GREENLEAF – THE HEAD & THE HABIT / NEW!
50070 Points
Stoner Rock
Borlänge, Sweden
Magnetic Eye Records
Do I get my stoner rock fan club membership revoked if I say that I prefer GREENLEAF to Dozer overall? We can all agree that GREENLEAF is not a side project anymore given that their new album, The Head & The Habit, is album number nine, right? Don’t get me wrong, I love both of these bands and the other bands connected to the current and former members of GREENLEAF, but for whatever reason, especially over the past decade, my go to out of almost any band in the genre seems to be GREENLEAF. The Head & The Habit cements them as in the top echelon of the genre for sure. These nine tracks are exactly what a fan of this band would expect and more; amazing musicianship (with a huge hat tip to the drum work), riffs, catchy songs, on point production, and great lyrics. GREENLEAF simply rules and should be looked at as on of the best bands out there today.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)
Hail the electric fuzz-power of the new Swedish masters! The Head & The Habit by GREENLEAF offers me everything I expect from heavy rock : irresistible hypnotic rhythms, 70s hard rock / proto-metal riffs by fuzzed guitar, below-sea-level tuned bass, unstoppable rock’n’rollin’ drums, bluesy groovy jams and good vocal melodies. Any heavy rocker could tell you TH&TH is his ultimate quest of an album, anyway it’s mine – trust the pumpkin!
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-Trust“ François (Metal Intégral)
For everyone that might have been a little worried about what the stunning new Dozer album Drifting In The Endless Void from 2023 might mean for the side-project that GREENLEAF originally was, have no fear, you can rest easy, there’s already a new GREENLEAF album for you to enjoy! Their former Echoes From A Mass album from 2021 felt like the perfection of the sound the band had been searching for since its formation back in 1999. Especially after vocalist Arvid Hällagård joined the band back in 2014. Ten years later, The Head & The Habit is full album number nine and the fifth with Hällagård. Soundwise the albums feels like a continuation of that perfect and incredibly groovy stonerrock sound they achieved on Echoes. Lyrically, Hällagård responsible for the lyrics, found inspiration in his other job, helping people in mental difficulties and addictive forms of dependancy. It gives the album more gravity and those swirling, addictive vocals, show us that Hällagård, like the other four, is the most important part of GREENLEAF. Indeed, every single member is the most important one and it feels like GREENLEAF cannot exist without them anymore. Singular in delivery and presence, the four are more than their number. A stand-out band that continues to deliver outstanding albums!
