DOOM CHARTS PERORATION – JANUARY 2024

“You know it ain’t no stoppin’ all the albums I’m droppin’
It’s Friday, so the Doom Charts is poppin’…”

~ (probably misheard) lyrics from Ice Cube

Welcome to the Doom Chart Peroration Post of January 2024. You know the deal. Below you find a whole heap of albums the many Contributors of the Doom Charts loved to bits and wrote a blurb about. Some landed on the regular January Edition, and had multiple blurbs written. Others were written because the Contributor loved it so hard! The first Peroration post of the new year also has a few albums from December on it… December and January were so full of other postings, that we did not get to the December Peroration. So, feast your ears, eyes and heavy underground heart on the 32 albums below! And as of this year, every month with a working full album, Spotify playlist as well… Runtime: over 20 hours… See bottom link…

The following are professions of love and adoration by Doom Charts Contributors for albums they could not stop spinning. Each month, the Doom Charts critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and other sorts of heavy rock albums. The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart which is published on the First Friday of the new month, monthly. However, sometimes a love is so great, but for whatever reason the album unfortunately did not make the published Doom Charts Edition or because there were so many contributors in love with that one album, that multiple blurbs were written, and only the one got published… Well, you can peruse that love here…

ANCIENT VVISDOM – MASTER OF THE STONE
Doom, Occult, Rock
Cleveland, OH, USA
Argonauta Records

Not on Bandcamp

Occult Rock has made a huge comeback led (obviously) by Ghost, and I am here for it.  The latest band that I am experiencing is ANCIENT VVISDOM, a band that has been around for a while but only now have I come across their ode to Satan stylings.  Think a more produced Pentagram or Witchfinder General, or a band more contemporary to compare to would be Sahg; heavy rock with satanic lyrics, excellent guitar work, and the ability to be catchy while pledging allegiance to the Dark Lord. Add some dashes of King Diamond, Type O, and even New Model Army to the Sahg comparison and you can see where these guys are heading…straight to Hell, and they could not be happier.

CHEDDAR – PSYCHE
Heavy Psych, Alternative Metal, Progressive Metal
Burgos,Spain
Self-released

A beautifully constructed collection of songs that walk a thin tightrope between ethereality and heaviness, an absolute gem of an album dripping in atmosphere, colour and texture taken to another level by a truly talented vocalist.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

THE CLAMPS – MEGAMOUTH
Stoner Rock, Heavy Psych, Retro Rock
Rome, Italy
Heavy Psych Sounds

THE CLAMPS won the prize this month for all out balls to the wall heavy psych/stonerrock by a landslide. Megamouth was written between 2021-2022, fueled by post-pandemic anger. That pent-up rage is palpable on these ten heavy-hitting tracks, conjuring up images of a Mad Max-inspired landscape with gruff yet melodic vocals, wailing guitar solos, fuzzy riffs, and galloping bass lines. Megamouth is retro-inspired stoner rock on steroids: bigger, stronger, and faster; a must-have in your collection this year.
~ Stephanie Zalta (Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

Power trio, THE CLAMPS , are back with their third LP, “Megamouth,” through Heavy Psych Sounds. The album offers a fuzzy, punk-infused take on stoner rock, inviting listeners on a wild, ’70s drag racing-inspired musical journey, paying homage to icons like Lemmy, Hellacopters, and Fu Manchu, urging them to crank up the volume and hit the gas. “Megamouth” is a thrilling nod to stoner rock, delivering a very fun, energy-packed, punk attitude through a grungy, rock n roll filter.
~ Ryan Foster (Slightly Fuzzed)

DARK SHAMAN – EVIL CEREMONY
Doom
Sicily, Italy
Forbidden Place Records

DARK SHAMAN brings a certain sense of glee to me. First of all, I like Doom which doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. These guys wear their influences on their sleeves, which include Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard and Mephistopheles, among others. The second thing that makes me gleeful is how much this is gonna piss off certain other reviewers. If they hear it at all, they’ll scream into their computers like a cat drenched by a bucket of ice water. Most people don’t “get” this kind of stuff. But for those that do, this is a solid introduction to a band you might want to closely follow!
~ Scott Spiers (CleanAndSoberStoner)

DAUÐARÓ – YLUR
Funeral Doom, Atmospheric Doom
Iceland
Self-released

The story behind the album’s inspiration is nothing short of amazing.  Basically, DAUÐARÓ saw the eruption of a volcano, an incredible event he witnessed from the balcony of his own home.  To create music like this on the spur of the moment is nothing short of amazing in of itself. The album represents this journey in a way that makes for both a challenging and fun listen.  DAUÐARÓ‘s brand of doom is always atmospheric and slow but it is dead on perfect for an album like this. Clean and ambient textures begin the journey to the epic eruption.  The first few minutes are very organic, a very natural flow that is never boring.   Soft, almost gentle, tones can be interesting as heavier moments and DAUÐARÓ nails that aspect down. With “Ylur,” DAUÐARÓ takes a concept that most bands or musicians would have trouble building into such a musical tapestry. Not only is this a highly successful release but it was that touches on a variety of emotions, a music that reaches down into the very nature of what makes the planet, and us, tick.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

DAUÐARÓ – KYRRPEY
Funeral Doom, Atmospheric Doom
Iceland
Self-released

DAUÐARÓ is a one man band that I have been following for some time now.  Black, death, and doom in nature, this project releases albums seemingly nonstop but there has never been a dip in quality.  If anything, DAUÐARÓ only improved as ’KYRRPEY’ is probably the best album yet from the cold lands of Iceland, where the musician lives.  Funeral doom the way it should be: super slow, super low, and super dark. These three long songs unfurl like the birth of darkness and unending depression. Each song features common elements but they are all distinct from each other.  Their length is an advantage because the songwriting is always engaging despite the slow tempo—there are so many details to discover with each listen.  If you like doom, especially funeral doom, this is a must listen release and a very special one to end the year and begin the new one with.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

THE DEATH SPELL – THE DEATH SPELL
Hard Rock, Stoner Metal
Auckland, New Zealand
Self-released

On Christmas Eve, THE DEATH SPELL released their self-titled debut album and what an album! The first song blew my mind: “What the hell is this? A piece of stonerized Motörhead?” A Turkish guitarist-singer, an Italian bassist and a British drummer met in New Zealand, the three emigrant artists are as virtuoso as their album is powerful and efficient. I’m just waiting for one thing: the physical release of this gem. Hurry up, guys!
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T François (Metal Intégral)

ELITIST – A MIRAGE OF GRANDEUR
Death Metal
Copenhagen, Denmark
Indisciplinarian

Originally released in November 2023, this one lands in a January residency due to the LP edition getting pushed into 2024. It’s new all over again! Outright fury and punishment from the ELITIST camp. Smothered in machine gun blast beats, furious chords, and absolute death metal vocal abuse. This is the style of death metal that warms my cold heart. The technical elements are very present but not so overblown that the assault is sacrificed. They are not messing around so prepare for battle. Riffs like razor blades. RIYL: Withered, Magrudergrind, Coalesce, Misery Index
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)

GOZD – UNILATERALIS
Stoner, doom, post-metal
Wroclaw, Poland
Self-released

Of course, the Gozdek brothers gave a part of their name to the band, but in an old Slavic language, “gozd” means beech forest. Can you hear this forest atmosphere through the post-metal or ambient touch merged with their stoner-doom style? I can. Unilateralis by GOZD is a four track EP fueled with fuzzy guitars and delicious psych metal jams. This is a short album (24′) for an intense pleasure.
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T François (Metal Intégral)

GREENGOAT – A.I.
Stoner, Grunge, Sludge
Madrid, Spain
Argonauta Records

You could either say a concept album about A.I. is either timely, given the world we are living in now, or a bit too heavy handed, given how overwhelmed we are with the topic on the news, at work, on social media, etc. One thing is for sure though, if you are Spain’s GREENGOAT putting out said album it is all good either way, because their album about A.I. kicks all sorts of robot ass.  Their first full length, aptly titled A.I., is some killer stoner/grunge with some elements of sludge that comes together to create what will be one of the best debut full lengths of the year. Yeah, this is a concept album, but what the story is I have no idea because all I can pay attention to are the filthy riffs and tone, outstanding drum work, and overall killer stoner/grunge/sludge odyssey that GREENGOAT brings.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

HAAVAT – MYRSKY NOUSEE
hardcore punk, crust
Norwich, UK
Sanctus Propaganda

Myrsky Nousee by HAAVAT delivers a raw emotion filled hardcore punk that is furious from beginning to end. Completely intense, high-speed, and direct in its attack. This album is not messing around. Beware anybody standing in the way because it is going to absolutely plow you over in the best of ways. There is a large chunk of D-beat as the backbone, a bit metallic at times but mostly crusty sounding stuff with absolute angst behind the vocals. Take no prisoners. RIYL: Tragedy, Kreigstanz, Discharge
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)

HEAVE BLOOD & DIE – BURNOUT CODES
Post Punk
Troms Og Finnmark, Norway
Fysisk Format

I could have easily dismissed HEAVE BLOOD & DIE as one of those grotesque (in the best sort of ways, of course) death metal bands, but this could not be further from what the band brings on their third album, Burnout Codes. This is a frantic thirty minutes of Post Punk perfection to break up my days usually filled with doomy riffs and stoner grooves. Burnout Codes also has some doom, shoegaze, and even industrial elements to the eight tracks on the album, vibing from bands like Joy Division, Killing Joke, and Prick. The ever-present synths drive the record, partnered perfectly with the chant like, layered vocals, and wall of sound guitars creating an awesome and unique soundscape that can hang with all the riff masters that are usually filling my ears.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

HOLY GIANT – DIVINERS & DIVIDERS
Heavy Psych, Psychedelic Stoner
Bologna, Italy
Heavy Ritual Music Records

Diviners & Dividers is an excellent debut album by HOLY GIANT. Their music is a hybrid of Doom and Stoner that balances between dark and ecstatic atmosphere. The massive riffs and powerful rhythms evolve during five to ten minutes tracks. The icing on the cake, I do love these delicious passages by Marco who masters ethnic throat singing. This album was a great and unexpected surprise to me.
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T François (Metal Intégral)

HUNDEN – A CALMING PRESS
Stoner Metal, Stoner Rock
Cleveland, Ohio
Fever Museum

HUNDEN is a band that will never leave you wanting for two things: variety and big riffs. A CALMING PRESS is a unique amalgamation of alternative rock and stoner metal. There’s always a heavy undertone, rife with emotion, but also an openness and brightness that is primarily helped along by some very powerful vocals and vocal harmonies. It’s a very admirable debut album from HUNDEN, busting right out of the gate with proof that the band can play (and sing/scream) multiple styles of heavy music in a very expressive way. This is a must-have album for those occasions when you have no idea what you’re in the mood to listen to.
~ Stephanie Zalta (Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

JOSIAH – REHCTAW
Psychedelic Rock, Proto-Metal
United Kingdom
Interstellar Smoke Records

JOSIAH returns with their most serious and experimental work to date, rehctaW. Centered around the idea of a hellish, post-apocalyptic future, this album delivers on its promise to be, in the band’s own words, “lysergic proto-metal for the dystopian loner.” Featuring an equal amount of groovy, psychedelic, riff-heavy tracks and more experimental, eerie numbers, this album makes it easy to imagine yourself in a nightmarish survival landscape, filled alternately with dread, anxiety, and adrenaline.
~ Stephanie Zalta (Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

KALA AZAR – KALA AZAR
Doom, Sludge, Stoner Metal
Switzerland
Self-released

KALA AZAR make a sound as dangerous as the disease they take their name from, a virulent blend of sludge doom and stonerized metal that once it gets a hold of you will never let go, there is no cure for this form of KALA AZAR nor will you want one.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

KILL THE THRILL – AUTOPHAGIA
Post-Punk, Post-Rock
France
Season of Mist

In a frigid, raspy voice someone calls into the distance. It feels as though they are searching for an answer among the stars, the mountains and the valleys built by a vast musical history. Out there lies hope and some level of forgiveness that can not be answered simplistically. The response is sometimes fierce but one of welcoming solace. The core writing of Autophagia is well-grounded and durable. This body is thriving. Pulsing with the coherent strength of discovery, and threading through to find the underutilized open space. KILL THE THRILL has found a place that sits between post-punk ambience and post-rock. A place that is tender and often uncomfortable for artists seeking consolation in thundering residence. Though it may border on delicate emotion, the intent remains lucid. Art often requires one to leave behind what is known to find balance with what is unseen within. RIYL: Swans, Jesu, Godflesh, Einstürzende Neubauten
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)

LES MOONTUNES – ELEPHANT WIZARD
Progressive Rock, Jazz, Fusion
Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada
Self-released

An incredible amalgamation of Psychedelia & Fusion – imagine ISOTOPE jamming with CHICK COREA and THE HUNDREDWEIGHT – one of the finest Modern Jazz albums since IDRIS ACKAMOOR & THE PYRAMIDS!’ “Shaman” – Faultless!
~ Stevie Reek (Howls from The Hollows, Doomed&StonedStoner HiVe)

MANDALA – KINGS CREEK
Psychedelic Rock, Stoner Rock
Luckenwalde, Germany
EAT TEA Records

MANDALA is one of those bands that can do a little bit of everything, and everything they do, they do well. This stoner/psych band from Luckenwalde, Germany does a phenomenal job of melding groove-heavy stoner rock with hard rock, grunge, blues, and a dash of punk for good measure. Keeping their melodies somehow both smooth and gruff, MANDALA’S songs have a tendency to take some clever twists and turns. Every song on the album provides a unique atmosphere and style that will always keep the listener on their toes. Kings Creek is an incredibly well thought out composition that will pull you in and keep you hooked with its hypnotic groove and ample variety.
~ Stephanie Zalta (Screaming From The Heavy Underground)

MARS RED SKY – DAWN OF THE DUSK
Stoner rock, Doom metal, Heavy psych
Bordeaux, France
Mrs Red Sound / Vicious Circle Records

MARS RED SKY is back with album number five, and we should all rejoice because the French heavy psych/stoner/doom band rarely disappoints, and they keep that streak up with the new one, Dawn Of The Dusk. The band has a very distinct sound, a clean sort of buzz that is double downed on the new record that makes this one of their best sounding outputs of their excellent career.  The band is once again leveraging the amazingly beautiful and haunting vocals from Helen Furguson (aka Queen Of The Meadow) on multiple songs and embracing a sort of heavy prog feel to several of the songs here, making this the most complex and complete record the band has released till date.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

MONTE PALOMAR – NADIR
Doom,Stoner,Occult Rock
Argentina
Self-released

Excellent heavy psych/doom grooves from Argentina that draw from a heady mix of eastern, western and latin influences and are fronted by exquiste smooth and seductive vocals. If your chakras are unaligned and your ying and yang seem out of balance then this album is the remedy you are looking for.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

MOURNING DAWN – FOAM OF DESPAIR
Blackened Doom Metal
Paris, France
Aesthetic Death

MOURNING DAWN’s “The Foam of Despair” is an exceptionally well crafted album.  It has the strong hallmarks of black metal and doom but it doesn’t sound like anything else that is out right now.  As of the time of this writing, this is my most played album and for good reason. The atmosphere is truly special, highlighted by the stellar production and mixing from Déhà which lets every detail shine through.  The album sounds very exciting and fresh, even after many, many listens.  The band welcomes non-traditional elements and makes them work even if they normally wouldn’t for most other bands.  The saxophone on “Tomber du temps” is surprisingly stunning—I absolutely cannot stand the sax… It easily my least favorite instrument of all time. But on this song?  Can’t imagine anything else working better. Industrial elements, especially on “Suzerain” are another element that I normally don’t have much use for but, again… “The Foam of Despair” is an album that is so together that whatever it pulls into it, becomes a formidable and necessary component.  It isn’t a fast or aggressive album, at least not in the conventional sense.  But each song presents the type of heaviness that is arresting, desperate, and hopeless.  The vocals are clawing, dying shrieks of blackened pain that reach out for the final pieces of what was once whole.   It’s very much a stark, dark album that is incredible dense but it’s also open, expansive, and cold as ice…
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

PARADISE LOST – ICON 30
Gothic, Doom
Halifax, West Yorkshire, England
Self-released

Not on Bandcamp

As far as the re-recording goes, this is pretty damn faithful to the original but it just sounds more modern. Updated, if you will. My biggest complaint with the original was the production was a bit thin in places, especially on the guitars. They have two guitarists of course but the original didn’t have the heft that two should bring to the table. That changes this time around for a more robust and heavier approach in tone. The drums sound a lot better now, especially the snare. The guitars and bass are also much more vibrant, which is great especially for the solos. Greg is quite the shredder when he wants to be and the notes really stand out this time around. Nick’s vocals are still as capable as ever—this guy only gets better as the years start to fade. See what I did there? No? Sorry.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

QILIN – PARASOMNIA
Instrumental, Doom, Stoner
Paris, France
Self-released

For many people, no singer = no power, no feeling, no passion… For those who are a little too close-minded, we’ll advise them to listen to Beethoven, Wagner of Tchaikovsky to discover that you can make  passionate and powerful music without singing… The french guys from QILIN (hey buddies !) have recorded a first masterpiece with Petrichor in 2020 but with Parasomnia, they have reached another level with a marvellous album full of power, feeling and passion. Two thumbs up my friends !
~ Damien Regnauld (Stoner Freaks Anthology)

REMUDA DUST – THE SPEEDBALL YEARS 99-01
Rock, Stoner, Grunge, Alternative
Sweden
Ozium Records

This release by Swedish label Ozium Records is a testament to the love for all the old stuff that still lies hidden in the heavy underground. During the early days of the stonerrock boom, Swedish quartet REMUDA DUST released a few demo’s, EP’s and singles that all had that grainy, grinding, grungy stonerrock sound. Collected here on this majestic release are the best of their tracks, resulting in a spirited ride through the Speedball years, speedy, energetic and highly addictive! Now, let’s hope that REMUDA DUST rediscovers that energy and will be back to sprinkle some more sand into all our eyes!
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)

SAEVUS FINIS – FACILIS DESCENSUS AVERNO
Death Metal
Portugal
Transcending Obscurity Records

SAEVUS FINIS is a Portuguese extreme metal band who have appeared out of some dark corner of a forgotten dimension to give us a stunning debut full length album in the form of “Facilis Descensus Averno.” From my very limited understanding, the band’s moniker means “the savage end” and the album’s title translates to “descent to hell.” Honestly, those translations work in going a long way to describing this band’s insane sound. It isn’t just the songwriting, however, that makes this beastial vessel such a tortured experience. The production/mix/mastering is exactly on point as to what this band needs to present such a hellish, nervous, and harrowing atmosphere. The music sounds rushed without actually being rushed… Like it is constantly on the edge of something even more unsettling.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

SANDBAG – ETERNAL REGRET
Hard rock, Doom, Stoner
United Kingdom
Self-released

Only one track (for now?), but damn what a killer track it is! The description says this is a side project and they may or may not follow up with more. I sure as heck hope they do. I love everything about this. The ebbs and flows, the perfect vocals (and backing vocals) and of course the awesome guitar playing. Please give us more!
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)

SAVAGE REPUBLIC – LIVE IN WROCLAW JANUARY 7, 2023
art-punk, post-punk
Los Angeles, CA
Mobilization Recordings / Gusstaff Records

There is something very special about the pulsating and hypnotic style of SAVAGE REPUBLIC. They have a commanding presence that is concrete while being able to flow as smoothly as water. They can occupy warm and rich textures and equally find a home in the cold, dark shadows. With this live representation, we get to experience how the band delivers this special, angst soaked, formula directly to the house.
~ Bobby Rayfield (Monuments In Ruin)

SLOW – ABIMES I
Funeral Doom, Atmospheric Doom
Belgium
Aural Music

Each of the four songs are very subtle in the way they unfurl. Tortured death growls mix with slow, slow riffs while the bass and drums create their own unique oblivion. Upon first listen, each song sounds basically the same. But give it more time to sink and in and the subtleties will start to shine like a beacon in the dark. The songs, of course, share similar traits but end up being rather different from each other. There isn’t much to say about this album because it isn’t one for words. It is very unconventional and off the beaten path, even compared to most doom. My continued words would sully it—-this is something that needs to be experienced with the ears and mind, not by some metal nerd talking on a screen. If you like doom, give this a chance. A real chance. Let it sink in. It isn’t background music. It is something you need to devote time to if you want to let the details reveal themselves.
~ Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal)

SUN Q – MYTH
Garage rock, Heavy psych, Stoner rock
Russia (Turkey, Georgia)
Self-released

The core of SUN Q is Elena’s wonderful voice and Yvan’s heavy guitar and vintage Soviet synthesizers. Around them there are a whole bunch of artists: violin, cello, nyckelharpa, brass, African drums, gospel choir and more. As a result SUN Q has a very unique signature sound. The magic is that their multifaceted rock goes straight to your heart and most of the songs are both sensitive and energetic. Myth is their sophomore full length and a real gem of an album. It is a treasure you don’t have to miss if you love diving into deep unusual universes.
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-Q François (Metal Intégral)

TANGLED HORNS – LIGHTER
Grunge, Rock, Stoner
Antwerpen, Belgium
Polderrecords

Landing at #26 on the Doom Charts last month this fine album missed getting a blurb written about it by one spot so I felt compelled to do so. This album really shouldn’t be missed. TANGLED HORNS self describe themselves as grunge meets stoner and go on to say but we don’t like boxes. I couldn’t agree more with this. Although it does have aspects of both in there this is just great rock music. I’ve said that about other artists and I don’t mind reiterating it here. Another thing I’ve said before that I’ll repeat is that if rock radio was still a thing this would be a hit. It’s it shame that it isn’t because lots of people should be hearing this.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)

VARIOUS ARTISTS – BURN ON THE BAYOU: A HEAVY UNDERGROUND TRIBUTE TO CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL
Stoner, Doom, Proto, Psych, Covers
All Over The World
Ripple Music

What possibly could there be not to love about Ripple Music and the bands that are on the label or adjacent to Ripple releasing a triple LP covers album of songs from the greatest American band of all time, Creedence Clearwater Revival? Turns out nothing, because this tribute record has 32 of your favorite stoner/doom/psych/proto/whatever bands taking these classics and giving them that Ripple flavor, some going the more straight-ahead route and some transforming the songs into almost unrecognizable yet still awesome versions of songs all overs of rock can most likely sing along to. I mean just check out Tony Reed and his Southern Rock offshoot Hot Spring Water absolutely crushing Born on The Bayou and the amazing version of Heard It Through The Grapevine brought to us by KIND who heavy up the already perfect song. Amazing stuff, and let’s hope this is just the start of a tribute series from Ripple Music.
