Doom Charts Top 100 Albums of 2023

Here we are, at the end of everything… No, just kidding, it’s just the end of a massive run of lists featuring the Personal Favorite albums of quite a few of our Contributors. Now, we could have asked everyone to submit those lists and make a Top 100 out of those. But that’s not how we do this thing we call the Doom Charts Top 100 of 2023! No, our Tallymaster Remi VL keeps score of everything and everyone throughout the year and those points are all subtracted, divided, multiplied and (insert some more math terms here), so we get this massive total list. Cause loads of albums receive points in the month they are released, but many also before the exact date because of the promo’s we receive and some receive points the following month. Simply because they are so good or because one or more Contributors only came to grips with it then. Which means, that some albums might gain quite a bit of momentum even though they aren’t featured on the Regular Doom Charts Editions… Well, peruse the Top 100 below to see all of the albums that received enough points throughout the year to make it to the Top 100!

During those twelve months of 2023, no less than 2424 albums received votes; and we can’t stress enough that they all deserved those votes, cause one of the many Contributors loved it. But because the bottom of that list is populated by a handful of bands that received that one point vote, those final spots are registered in alphabetical order. To be exact 62 albums are located there, but be advised, they all received votes, so at least one of the Contributors loved it to bits! Alphabetical does mean that there’s one album that is situated at the very bottom, last year we named the final spot on the list… This year we had Doktor420 pull a number out of his head, which ended up corresponding with DIRTY SEEDS – BEWARE THE BEAST MAN! Just check out this Houston, Texas quartet and hear the quality in this old school, blues inspired, stoner rocking gem! There’s so much good and heavy music out there! Let’s make sure we keep finding more! Support the bands! Find them! Spread the good word about! It’s why we do this thing!

25. REZN – SOLACE — 20907
Doom, Stoner Rock
Chicago, Illinois
Self-released / Off The Record Label

REZN is back and they’re on a winning streak. Solace is a hypnotic, psychedelic wonder – an immersive journey through multiple layers of fuzz and reverb, hazy vocals, and crushing riffs. Easily a 10/10 album!
~ Ryan Hilton (Black Throne Productions)

24. CHILD – SOUL MURDER — 21028
Blues, Stoner, Rock
Melbourne, Australia
Self-released

A new CHILD is born and this one is simply massive. A very cleverly constructed album. If you are in need of 70’s heavy blues, this is the one CHILD that will never disappoint. On repeat since my first listen, total goosebumps every time again!!!
~ ‘The General’ (Stoner Rock Army)

23. HIGH PRIEST – INVOCATION — 21450
Grunge, Stoner, Doom, Metal
Chicago, Illinois
Magnetic Eye Records

Invocation is like if Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Hum, Iron Maiden, and Thin Lizzy had a fuzzy baby from outer space. HIGH PRIEST takes their time and are meticulous with what they put out, which really shows given how freaking awesome Invocation is.  This is fuzzy, grungy, doomy, spacey awesomeness that will hang with anything that has been put out this year so far and currently sits at my number two album for 2023. That’s how great Invocation is.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

22. THUNDER HORSE – AFTER THE FALL — 22200
San Antonio, TX
Hard Rock, Stoner Metal, Doom
Ripple Music

THUNDER HORSE remains untamed and battle-born with a ferociously metallic harmony, infectious stoner fuzz and galloping rhythm. The vocals remain virile with an overwhelming sense of dissonanse between manufactured virtue and reality.
~ Bucky Brown (The Ripple Effect)

21. GOZU – REMEDY — 22356
Stoner, Grunge
Boston, Massachusetts
Metal Blade Records

Five long years have passed since the release of sophomore album “Equilibrium” back in 2018. now the legendary Stoner/Desert band from Boston have returned with renewed vigour and crushing tunes in “REMEDY“. 9 tracks of high-octane, pedal-to-the-metal fuzz worship at once reminiscent of Sabbath, High On Fire and Big Scenic Nowhere but unmistakeably GOZU in style and delivery! A Peach of an album!
~ Reek of STOOM (Doomed&StonedStoner HiVe)

20. RUFF MAJIK – ELEKTRIK RAM — 22984
Stoner, Alternative, Psychedelic
Pretoria, South Africa / Cottbus, Germany
Mongrel Records

It’s hard to peg RUFF MAJIK as any one particular musical style, but then again we probably don’t need to! From the band’s inception up until the present day, a large part of their charm has been the eclectic mix of sounds from the heavy underground and beyond; their latest album Eletrik Ram is no exception! RUFF MAJIK have once again ground together a unique blend of musical influences and sprinkled it all over a sticky base of high energy rock ‘n’ roll to produce an album that will leave you wide-eyed and ready to boogie!
~ Brandon Collins (Morbid And Miserable Records)

19. MOON COVEN – SUN KING — 23258
Stoner, Doom, Psych, Occult Rock
Malmo, Sweden
Ripple Music

MOON COVEN has a modern classic and an (my) album of the year candidate with Sun King. The band has taken their occult tinged stoner rock to the next level as the band sounds like no other band while giving me everything I love about heavy music. Killer riffs, catchiness without compromising the heaviness, cool/weird lyrics, unique vocals, and an aura of mystery. All of this comes together on Sun King, which has all the stars and planets align, creating a stoner/psych masterpiece and my probable album of the year.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

18. DEAD FEATHERS – FULL CIRCLE — 23460
Psychedelic Rock
New York, USA
Ripple Music

When we discovered DEAD FEATHERS in 2016 with a 4-track EP, we thought that we had the band able to continue the work of Blues Pills. But the euphoria only lasted for the duration of this EP because, thereafter, no news in a few months. A silence broken with the release in August 2019 of All is lost, their first gem. And this month, DEAD FEATHERS is back with a brand-new album and from the first measures, we are as if caught in a sensory bubble, surrounded by a vaporous mist that is thick and soft at the same time, undoubtedly thanks to the inhabited singing of Marissa Allen. The music captivates you, transports you and teleports you directly to the middle of the Haight-Ashbury district, epicenter of the Summer Of Love. On my top 5 of this year, without any doubt.
~ Damien Regnauld (Stoner Freaks Anthology)

17. MARGARITA WITCH CULT – MARGARITA WITCH CULT — 23968
Doom, Stoner, Proto
Birmingham, UK
Heavy Psych Sounds

If until now you had not heard of them, and you are fans of 70’s proto-metal, or of bands like UNCLE ACID & THE DEADBEATS, from today, the British trio could become one of your favorite bands. Because MARGARITA WITCH CULT bring the fury with their debut album. Born from the murky industrial depths of Birmingham, (aka Sabbath City), the raucous trio pull off a tour-de-force by fusing the fucking energy of NWOBHM with the hidden imagery and heaviness of the rawest, most psychotropic proto-doom. . With direct and thunderous songs, these guys manage to melt your face with heavy-metal hits more typical of Orange Goblin, plunge you into Sabbathic darkness, blind you with riffs more typical of Dozer, or cast a spell on you with the occult spell of the aforementioned Uncle Acid. Because this debut is a devastating album, with incredible gachos, catchy choruses and a bewitching psychedelic atmosphere. A beast with several heads commanded by a raw sound, but extremely magnetic, in a waste of energy and good work.
~ Roberto Lucas (Denpa Fuzz)

16. REZN & VINNUM SABBATHI – SILENT FUTURE — 24108
Progressive, Heavy, Psychedelic
USA & Mexico
Blues Funeral Recordings

Probably the most exciting collaboration of the year! When psych/doom masters REZN join their forces and their talent with Mexican cosmic astronauts Vinnum Sabbathi, the result can only be awesome, and it is. Silent Future is an expedition, a tribal trip, an unreal ecstasy and probably the greatest thing you will hear this year. What a blast!
~ Damien Regnauld (Stoner Freaks Anthology)

15. CHURCH OF MISERY – BORN UNDER A MAD SIGN — 26477
Stoner, Heavy Psych, Doom
Tokyo, Japan
Rise Above Records

NOT ON BANDCAMP

Japanese doom/heavy stoner legends CHURCH OF MISERY are back with their first new material since 2016, which is way too long because CoM rules. The band’s worship of all things serial killer and Iommi is on full display here with their heavy, tuned down stoner doom with psychedelic leanings, creepy as hell subject matter and newsreel snippets. Oh yeah, and an awesome Haystacks Balboa cover with lots of organ. Seriously, what’s not to like here. This is an album of the year candidate that will slay you and the competition.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

14. DOPELORD – SONGS FOR SATAN — 26697
Doom, Heavy Doom, Satanic Doom, Doomy Doom
Warsaw – Poland
Blues Funeral Recordings

Since the start of the year, Postwax albums series have regularly trusted the top of the charts: whether the latest offerings from Dead Meadow, Dozer or the REZN / Vinnum Sabbathi split, each new release delivers tons of pleasure, except for our bank account… And the latest one is no exception: it’s the new album by Polish band DOPELORD, Songs for Satan. For those who know DOPELORD, we swim in familiar territory and those who do not appreciate their previous albums will turn back from the first seconds of the telluric Night of the Witch. But others will delight until the last drop of this end-of-the-world doom which, if it does not reinvent the game, magnifies it, glorifies it and satanizes the sacrosanct fuzz god. With the recent reissues released by Electric Valley records, DOPELORD is definitely the big winner of this year and became the band that has recovered the European doom master throne left vacant by the recent and disappointing Monolord offerings. Simply essential.
~ Damien Regnauld (Stoner Freaks Anthology)

13. BLACK RAINBOWS – SUPERSKULL — 26941
Stoner Rock, Heavy Psych
Rome, Italy
Heavy Psych Sounds

BLACK RAINBOWS at their absolute best. Listeners will not only find all of their signature high-octane, stoner rock and heavy psych, but so much more! BLACK RAINBOWS also shows a more melodic and softer side. Not only one of my favorite albums of the year so far, but arguably their best work to date.
~ Ryan Foster (Slightly Fuzzed)

12. ACID MAGUS – HOPE IS HEAVY — 27378
Doom, Stoner, Progressive, Hard Rock
Pretoria, South Africa
Mongrel Records

ACID MAGUS have come back bigger, better and weirder than ever with their new album Hope Is Heavy. Taking a more Acid Rock approach for this record and perhaps a stripped back Doom/Fuzz/Grunge sound that’s quite different to their celebrated debut. This record allows ACID MAGUS to delve into the classic lore of Psych Stoner Metal and giving it a more aggressive Doom Metal sound. Hope Is Heavy is everything you want to hear from a first rate WEEDIAN album such as this.
~ Steve Howe (Outlaws of the Sun)

11. RITUAL KING – THE INFINITE MIRROR — 27950
Stoner, Psych, Doom
Manchester, UK
Ripple Music

The Infinite Mirror is next level awesome, which we have come to expect from pretty much anything Ripple Music puts out at this point. RITUAL KING brings its psych/desert rock hybrid to new heights with six new tracks, each one better than the next, delivering to us a solid album of the year candidate. The builds, the swirling psych drenched guitars, the complete mastery of their instruments and the genre, and a step up in their songwriting, RITUAL KING has developed the perfect blend of stoner psych goodness and are the new masters of the genre.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

10. PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS – LAND OF SLEEPER — 28566
Space, Doom, Psych, Sludge, Stonerrock
Newcastle, UK
Rocket Recordings

It seems like a lot of modern space rock bands have forgotten about the ferocious destructive power necessary to get your space vessel afloat. Not PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS. They are that engine. These seven English pigs are rougher than most, driven by their loud mouthed head honcho Matt Baty, whose rough howls easily tear through the walls of heavily pumped up distortion. Like an actual space rocket, they use a combustion of various chemicals, be it acid or stoner, or sludge, and mix it up into a highly combustable propellant.
~ Jasper Hesselink (Weirdo Shrine)

9. HAIL THE VOID – MEMENTO MORI — 29376
Doom, Stonerrock, Psych, Metal
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
Ripple Music

After an excellent debut album I was impatiently awaiting their sophomore LP. Today, I may say this second assault is nothing but brilliant. A short atmospheric introduction, 4 very doom tracks followed by 3 psychedelic tracks allow us to explore all the talent of HAIL THE VOID through this magnificent Memento Mori. Of course, the line between doom and psychedelic is not a strict dichotomy and the doom vibe colors the psychedelic tracks, just as psychedelia infuses into the doom tracks. Memento audire: remember to listen!
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-Void François (Metal Intégral)

8. TIDAL WAVE – THE LORD KNOWS — 31564
Stoner Rock
Sundsvall, Sweden
Ripple Music

Swedish stoner rock from one of the world’s premier nations for this genre of music and TIDAL WAVE can stand proudly alongside their compatriots with an album full of riffs so lush that you’ll not only want to headbang to but also give a great big hug.
~ Steve Woodier (Deathrattle Podcast)

7. SAINT KARLOFF – PALEOLITHIC WAR CRIMES — 31872
Stoner, Psych, Prog, Proto
Oslo, Norway
Majestic Mountain Records

If you’re looking for some excellent psych stoner fare, you are hereby advised to check out Paleolithic War Crimes, the third full length from Norway’s SAINT KARLOFF. Similar to fellow countrymen Hex A.D., SAINT KARLOFF include active Hammond organ, adding a prog feel to their sound akin to the weird sections on Sabbath’s Sabbath Bloody Sabbath record. Additionally, they sport a vocalist that reminds me of Chris Cornell of Soundgarden fame. But most importantly, the band know how to write and deliver memorable tracks.
~ Chris Tighe (The Mighty Decibel)

6. BORRACHO – BLURRING THE LINES OF REALITY — 36960
Stoner Metal, Desert Rock, Heavy Psych, Hard Rock
Washington, D.C., USA
Repetitive Heavy Grooves Music

Introducing BORRACHO seems unnecessary to me because I consider the trio from Washington is one of the big names in the Heavy Rock scene and there is no doubt that Blurring The Lines Of Reality will further consolidate its notoriety. If you enjoy heavy riffs fueled with fuzz, expressive vocalist and totally hypnotic jams this album will be a jewel for you – period!
~ Thierry “Pumpkin-T François (Metal Intégral)

5. HOWLING GIANT – GLASS FUTURE — 37568
Stoner, Prog
Nashville, Tennessee, USA
Magnetic Eye Records

How does Nashville’s HOWLING GIANT build on the immersive conflagration Masamune (their half to Ripple Music’s Turned to Stone Chapter 2) lit inside us all? By crafting an entire galaxy within which their epic stories can be born and thrive for aeons to come! Glass Future explodes with a tremendous roar, its celestial grandeur limitless as it reaches for the end of time and space, its imagination sparks wondrous awe upon those who gaze into its luminous core, upon those ears who capture even the most fleeting of passages. The record is nothing short of a spellbinding masterclass of heavy psychedelia restoring some semblance of good in this awful world.
~ JC Cansdale-Cook (The MotorFuzzin’ Ibex)

4. GREEN LUNG – THIS HEATHEN LAND — 38276
Stoner Rock, Heavy Metal, Occult, Doom
London, UK
Nuclear Blast

GREEN LUNG continues to shamelessly explore the legacy of 70’s heavy rock. In another episode of its evolution, the band seems to have its objective absolutely clear. Thus, they hit us again with epic songs in which proto-doom, and the heavy rock of yesteryear, live in placid harmony in a vintage atmosphere with great voices and hair-raising riffs. Unbreakable hooks that are tinted dark so as not to forget those occult sounds and turn them into a fantasy story. His fantastic virtuoso solos and the always successful contribution of the organ make his songs cohesive. The twists and changes of pace don’t matter, because in the end everything is perfect to hook the listener in a mystery story presided over by a grandiloquent melancholy.
~ Roberto Lucas (Denpa Fuzz)

3. DOMKRAFT – SONIC MOONS — 48864
Rock, Stoner, Psych, Sludge, Doom, Kraut
Sweden
Magnetic Eye Records

It’s DOMKRAFT, and their psychedelic doom, their highly fuzzed out take on it, with sludge tones and kraut hypnotism has always been a band that knew how to catch a groove and follow the flow. And where Seeds perhaps started off a bit slower, a bit more open spaced, Sonic Moons makes its intentions clear from the start. Opening track Whispers, with its ominous riff, soon even denser and darker, before it’s allowed to open up, turns more galactic as we continue on and the vocals wind itself along the echoing guitar. And that cosmic edge, turns it all into something even more hypnotic than we are used to from DOMKRAFT. Hypnotic, addictive and obliterating, Sonic Moons is the new galatic drug of choice for every heavy rock junkie…
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)

2. ACID KING – BEYOND VISION — 58425
Doom, Psych, Stoner
San Francisco, California
Blues Funeral Recordings

ACID KING‘s evolution is on full display throughout BEYOND VISION, seeing them opting for more emphasis on their psychedelic influences without abandoning the stoner rock that they are known for. While it may not be your traditional ACID KING album, it is a wonderful foray into new territory that is well worth the price of admission!
~ Tom Hanno (Tom’s Reviews, The Third Eye)

1. DOZER – DRIFTING IN THE ENDLESS VOID — 66132
Stoner Rock, Progressive, Fuzz
Borlänge, Sweden
Blues Funeral Records

Cult stoner rock band DOZER are back with a much anticipated return to the trenches of the heavy underground. While the members remained active, sharpening their tracks in other bands such as the mighty Greenleaf, they’ve graded a new pad of hard and heavy fuzz, throttling drums and finely honed vocals. Some say their meanest effort yet.
~ Bucky Brown (The Ripple Effect)

After enjoying that circling, pounding and groovy guitar sound master Tommi Holappa has been delivering for so many years with this Swedish quartet called Greenleaf, you would almost forget that Greenleaf started as a side-project. Well, his other band is back and delivers another dose of stonerrock, that twists with sludge elements and soars with something progressive. It is that sultry, velvet, gliding sound you know from Greenleaf, but DOZER delivers all that heavy magic wrapped in barbed wire and with a flowing current of electricity that runs through your entire body and makes your bones vibrate…
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)

DOZER is such a part of the Stoner/Doom/Desert DNA that it’s easy to forget how pivotal they were, and with DRIFTING IN THE ENDLESS VOID, still are. DOZER is so deeply ingrained that countless bands seem to be influenced by them, even if they haven’t even heard of them. This album schools a whole new generation on how it’s done.
~ Scott Spiers (CleanAndSoberStoner)

  1. Well, I’m getting to the point where I am familiar with maybe 10 bands on these lists and have their music. Theres a lot out there. Hail The Void was great for a short period of time but then I got burned out on the singing. The fake, gimmicky haunting goth singing to me just seems really cheese.

Really surprised High Desert Queen isn’t on this list

    1. There is a huge amount out there! 2424 albums received votes this year, but there are even more out there… You can be sure about that…

And if you are referring to the HIGH DESERT QUEEN & BLUE HERON – TURNED TO STONE CHAPTER 8: THE WAKE album?

It came in on 138 out of 2424 albums…

      1. That’s where I first heard about them, but they also have an album out as well. Secrets of the Black Moon. Its fantastic. I saw them perform at Ripplefest pre-party last year. Met the singer, Ryan. Pretty cool dude. I think they have real talent
