DOOM CHARTS – OCTOBER 2023

“Don’t take away the music
It’s the only thing I’ve got
It’s my piece of the rock…”

~ Tavares

Nobody can listen to more than a fraction of all the music ever released, during their lifetime. And even the amount of music being released on a daily basis in what we have started calling the Heavy Underground is already so immense, it remains forever completely and totally awe-inspiring. It was the main reason Lucas started the Doom Charts back in 2015. To somehow try and get many of the ones that dive into that massive ocean of heaviness on a daily basis, and who write, blurb or podcast about what they discover somewhere on the internet, all grouped together. So, that together, they could possibly make some sort of list of the most important ones. Ofcourse, music is totally subjective and the Heavy Underground is of course another tribe, which inspires tribalism. It is one part of why there are so many glowing reviews about the albums we listen to. Cause even us outsiders, who finally found an every growing niche the feel at home in, do want to belong to this lovely tribe of heavy rock fiends. Or at least I do. Another, perhaps even more important reason is what we started the intro with. There is so much music! So, why bother listening to the albums you don’t love so much and why write about those, when you can profess your love for the ones you do. Well, below, those amazing girls and boys that make up the Doom Charts cabal do just that. They selected the albums they loved from the past month, sent in their lists and wrote a few words of praise… A Top 40 of amazing records, all of which deserve every bit of your attention… Go check’m out! Check’m all out!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

25. WOLF PRAYER – SPELL OF THE CRIMSON EYE /NEW!
1336 Points
Stoner, Psych
RP, Germany
Barhill Records

In ‘SPELL OF THE CRIMSON EYE‘ we find a full and solvent band, a band with clear ideas and creativity in a state of Grace. With the intention of transmitting on the album the strength, power and consistency of their live performances, WOLF PRAYER present an album with many attractions for the listener. Having advanced in its heavy-psych aspect, the melodies and oscillations of each song offer surprising and well-crafted turns. If we add to this that the band has not lost one bit of its stoner power, the result is a work to enjoy and taste like a haute cuisine dish.
~ Roberto Lucas (Denpa Fuzz)

24. SLOTH – SLOTH /NEW!
1400 Points
Doom
Los Angeles, USA
The Swamp Records

If you’re on the look out for a good ol’ fashion doom record w/a low end that’ll bust your gut if the subwoofer is turned up appropriately, may I suggest the debut full length from L.A. California’s SLOTH. Slow is the word of the day here, crushing riffs repeatedly bludgeoning, while psych guitar playing and witch-like vocals serenade as you melt into a pile of poo. Low end domination!!!
~ Chris Tighe (The Mighty Decibel)

23. AIWASS – THE FALLING /NEW!
1500 Points
Doom, Occult, Post-Metal
Texas, USA
King Volume Records

This Occult, Solo Sorcerist from Texas bring their own Musical Cult-Worship to the fore on “THE FALLING“. Cripplingly heavy, slow and Mesmeric with surreal choral passages and very much in the arena of NEPTUNIAN MAXIMALISM, MWWB and BEARD OF STARS! One to embrace the darkness with.
~ Reek of STOOM (Howls from The Hollows, Doomed&StonedStoner HiVe)

22. VANISHING KIDS – MIRACLE OF DEATH /NEW!
1652 Points
Post Rock, Shoegaze, Dream Doom
Maidson, Wisconsin, USA
Self-released

VANISHING KIDS have blended post-rock, doom and psychedelic shoegaze to give us an album that both soothes and bludgeons. Ethereal vocals float over fuzzed guitars with devastating results. What’s not to like!
~ Tony Maim (Black Insect LaughterStoner HiVe)

21. STONE NOMADS – …AT THE GATES OF SOLITUDE /NEW!
1837 Points
Doom, Sludge, Stoner Metal
Houston, Texas, USA
Gravitoyd Heavy Music

Something, we know not what, has changed in STONE NOMADS universe, the band who delivered unto us the dark but still fairly upbeat “Fields of Doom” are no more, in their place has appeared this angry spite filled combo intent on crushing all before them with their blackened riffs, harsh growly vocals and incessant pounding rhythms. If you liked STONE NOMADS when they were upbeat you are going to absolutely love ’em angry.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

20. MORAG TONG – GRIEVE /NEW!
1968 Points
Doom, Sludge, Prog
London, UK
Majestic Mountain Records

Wailing walls of atmosphere, shifting and evolving effortlessly like shadows both light and dark. All the tonal heft, hypnotic melody, baleful escalation and a flood of crushingly brooding allure one could possibly desire but with an elegance and sophistication in the delivery of intensely measured anguish, speaking volumes of MORAG TONG‘s steady and purposeful grip on perfectly placed tension and release. and cements their position os premiere purveyors of the slow and heavy. MORAG TONG have created a masterpiece with ‘Grieve,’ and what we have here is some might fine stoner doom on a cinematic scale with ambitiously somber and wildly apparent, organic intuition as the main arrow of their finely honed arsenal.
~ The Doom Oracle (Spectral Ecstacy)

19. THE HEAVY MINDS – BEYOND GLOOM /NEW!
2088 Points
Heavy Psych, Garage Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Austria
Stone Free Records

Upon listening to THE HEAVY MINDS, I was immediately hearkened back to a simpler time, during which there were plentiful moments to dream and contemplate the hows and whys of life. Stream of consciousness lyrics and music that is primarily bright and airy make the sound feel like a daydream, yet the heavy undertone ensures that you keep one foot firmly planted in grim reality. I can’t help but be reminded of bands like Oasis from the 90s alternative rock era, with that signature garage rock sound, but THE HEAVY MINDS is so much more complex in the best way.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, CleanAndSoberStoner)

18. FUZZY GRASS – THE REVENGE OF THE BLUE NUT /NEW!
2136 Points
Heavy Psych, Heavy Blues, Heavy Rock
Toulouse France
Kozmik Artifactz

Do you ever start listening to something and say to yourself ‘Wow this is really good, what is this again?’ and then realize it’s new and you never heard it before although it’s really familiar. So then you start thinking of what song or band it reminds you of but you can’t really place that exactly either because it’s more of an amalgamation of a lot of cool songs and bands that you love not one in particular. It’s sort of like hitting it off perfectly with someone who you’ve never met and you become instant friends but in this case it’s a killer heavy psychedelic guitar freak out firmly rooted in 70’s “acid” rock with perfectly fitting vocals that add greatly to that retro sound which is exactly what they aim for and hit directly on the head. After all their first LP is called 1971, check that one out also after this one, it’s really good too.
~ Andy Kovalcik (Bandcamp-NYP-Hard&Heavy)

17. GIANT LUNGS – GIANT LUNGS /NEW!
2211 Points
Stoner Rock, Desert Rock
Augsburg, Germany
Self-released

GIANT LUNGS has graced us with a beautiful representation of stoner/desert rock with their self-titled debut EP. The vocals whisper, croon, and float etherically over the heavy, fuzzy stoner rock instrumentals like a subconscious voice in a fever dream. The images created by the poetic lyrics are alternatively beautiful, relatable, and ambiguous, leaving the listener contemplative. The percussion is tight, the bass groove is ever-present, and bright and fuzzy guitar pokes through the heaviness like sunbeams through storm clouds. This is an album that can easily be played from start to finish without the urge to skip a track. GIANT LUNGS is well on their way to securing a place as mainstays in the stoner/desert rock genre.
~ Stephanie Zalta (DoomCakes, CleanAndSoberStoner)

16. PURPLE KONG – BLOOD LIGHTNING /NEW!
2304 Points
Doom, Stoner, Metal, Rock
London, UK
Kozmik Artifactz

With their debut album Blood Lightning, the three devilish Kongs have definitely chiseled their name into the holy ground of venerable riffers, and the album’s title can be taken as a warning sign! Blood Lightning is an impressive, exciting and gripping beast! Grounded in the doom/stoner/metal genre, with wonderfully surreal-organic (without attitudes that slide into the bizarre) flowing sound that reminds me of Salvador Dalí’s famous artworks! Blood Lightning’s dirty, gritty basic sound, with a fuzzy, blues licked metal, occult rock tinge, revels and swings (consciously and intentionally) in the twilight of the genre scale.  Sabbath-esque groove melts, devilishly vocalized, in psych-rock and thuggish sludge moves to blaze in epic guitar solos and doomy ambient sounds. Psychedelic-fuzztrippy changes its costume with aggressive stoner-doom-metal. Welcome this brilliant devilish purple kong star on the horizon folks!
~ Mel Lie (Sunday’s Heavy Tunes)

15. PHE – NOTHING ELSE IS REAL /NEW!
2387 Points
Stoner Rock, Blues, Grunge, Psych
Helmond, Netherlands
Self-released

This is an immaculate, patient record, one that unfolds with dark grooves and spacious soundscapes that gently reel the listener in, and before you know it you’re immersed til the end. ‘Nothing Else Is Real‘ is an accomplished, nuanced record that’s made with a painstaking attention to detail, delivering a dark and magnificent vision of stoner rock.
~ Kyle SB / Shasta Beast (Stoner HiVe)

14. PURIFICATION – ELPHINSTONE /NEW!
2448 Points
Epic Doom, Atmospheric Doom, Heavy Metal
Portland, Oregon
Self-released

If atmospheric doom tinted with old school flavours is your thing then you will NOT want to pass up on this absolute gem of an album, its dank dark songs have an almost cinematic feel and evoke images of cowled figures standing at altars, broken headstones in mist shrouded graveyards and gothic mansions silhouetted in pale grey moonlight, this is not an album you will want to listen to alone.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

13. BLOOD LIGHTNING – BLOOD LIGHTNING /NEW!
3354 Points
Proto, NWOBHM
Boston, Massachusetts
Ripple Music

How could anything be bad with members of GOZU and Worshipper? BLOOD LIGHTNING, while not the typical Ripple release, IS the typical awesome of the stuff Todd puts out for all our rock enjoyment.  Gillan-era Sabbath worship/NWOBHM/80s Trad Metal played by members of awesome stoner/psych bands put out by Ripple Music.  What possibly would stop you from checking this out and blasting it immediately?
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

12. LUCID SINS – DANCING IN THE DARK /NEW!
3720 Points
Psychedelic Rock, Occult Rock, Folk Rock
Glasgow, Scotland
Totem Cat Records

Despite two very good albums, LUCID SINS still haven’t really gotten the attention they deserve. This makes you wonder why this might be, because musically the Scots deliver some really great material from the 1970s. With “Dancing In The Dark” the group has now released their third album and what can I say – just listen to the brilliant opener ‘Jack Of Diamonds’ (delicate, fragile, melodic). After the jazzy uptempo track ‘Take Me With You’, it continues with the surprisingly riffy ‘From The Bough’, the folky ‘Sanctuary Stone’, the psycho-blues number ‘Heavy Toll’ and the closing ‘Catch The Wild’ (relaxed, bluesy, wonderfully relaxed) great further. We can only hope that “Dancing In The Dark” finally gets the recognition that such a great seventies work should get – we keep our fingers crossed.
~ Tom Schmahl (Rock Circuz)

11. OCCULT HAND ORDER – SILENCE BY THE RAGING SEA /NEW!
4556 Points
Doom, Post Metal, Sludge, Psych
Lyon, France
Self-released / Bigoût Records

Their progressive doom, with its psychedelic touches, post metal meandering and sludge tones is once again one hell of an impressive adventure. Colorful, atmospheric and emotive, the six tracks drag you along on a wild and dangerous voyage. And then there are those moments when they let all the colors fade away, turn their sound into something bleaker and savage and you cannot help but feel swallowed, feel the world slowly sinking away beneath you…
~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)

10. LA CHINGA – PRIMAL FORCES /NEW!
5008 Points
Stoner, Proto, Rock
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Ripple Music

There is not a more rock and roll band in the universe than LA CHINGA. Primal Forces, the fourth and maybe best LA CHINGA album, is here to explain how rock should be done properly, and by properly, I mean with gigantic balls, booze, women, drugs, cowbell, and every other vice that makes heavy rock what it is. People, LA CHINGA is the modern-day AC/DC, and you all need to get on board before the party train leaves without you. This is an unabashed, no bullshit rock record that will be blasting from my turntable for a very, very long time.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

9. MOOCH – WHEREVER IT GOES /NEW!
6288 Points
Stoner Rock, Heavy Psych, Blues
Montreal, Canada
Self-released

Fan-fucking-tastic groove laden jams. Think The Heavy Eyes meets Fireball Ministry with a sprinkling of The Doors. A highly engaging and diverse array of fuzzy riffs drenched in psych and pulsing with swagger.
~ Bucky Brown (The Ripple Effect)

8. BAHBOON – THUNDER APE /NEW!
6919 Points
Stoner, Doom, Metal
Tokyo, Japan
Self-released

Oh my goodness, what’s going on here? Then I accidentally stumbled upon a band from Japan whose cover artwork caught my eye and gave me the impression that they were very interesting. Just listened to it and what can I say: it’s an absolute blast! I won’t mention any song directly here, just give my musical impressions. Here groovy doomy bass part meets killing stoner riffs. The drums clatter at every nook and cranny, the bass pushes and the powerful vocals deliver perfectly. Psycho parts meet slightly progressive proto-metal riffs. The production is quite warm and, despite all the harshness, not at all overloaded. Of course, bands like Kyuss and Black Sabbath come into play here. The 6 tracks run for 36 minutes and if you have the option, you should consider headphones, because with them you get the real bang – what a killer work!
~ Tom Schmahl (Rock Circuz)

7. DEATHCHANT – THRONES /NEW!
7305 Points
Heavy Metal, Hardrock, Psych, Fuzz
Los Angeles, USA
RidingEasy Records

After two very good first albums, the Americans have now recorded their third long player, which in my opinion is a step higher. As on the two predecessors, DEATHCHANT also deliver us a fireworks display of twin guitars on “Thrones” and should therefore put a big grin on the faces of all Thin Lizzy disciples. Just check out the great opener ‘Canyon’. But the driving ‘Mirror’, the wonderfully relaxed ‘Mother Mary’, a wonderfully harmonious ‘Chariot’ and the light-footed ‘Earth’ also ensure that “Thrones” will definitely appear in my annual charts for 2023 – 37 minutes of pure enthusiasm!
~ Tom Schmahl (Rock Circuz)

6. APPALOOZA – THE SHINING SON /NEW!
8520 Points
Stoner Rock, Grunge, Hard Rock
Brittany, France
Ripple Music

French band, APPALOOZA, known for their blend of grunge and heavy rock, takes an intriguing turn on their third album, ‘The Shining Son,’ adding even more depth to their sound. This album prioritizes rhythm and emotion over conventional rock, with a shift toward densely tribal and rhythmic elements. The thematic continuation from ‘The Holy Of Holies’ is evident in the lyrical concept, with mystic stories of Christian origins and Indian mythology. ‘The Shining Son‘ is a varied masterpiece of driving rhythms and melodies, showcasing APPALOOZA‘s remarkable evolution.
~ Ryan Foster (Slightly Fuzzed)

5. RESTLESS SPIRIT – AFTERIMAGE /NEW!
11277 Points
Doom, Stoner, Metal
Long Island, New York
Magnetic Eye Records

Everything on Afterimage is a step forward for RESTLESS SPIRIT. The songwriting, the playing, the ability to consistently move ahead and offer something different without compromising their overall sound are all reasons why the third record from RESTLESS SPIRIT is their best. Growing up on Long Island having access to something like Afterimage with it’s Type O/Sabbath vibes versus the hardcore screams and circle pits may have shaped my listening habits significantly and for the better.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

4. KADABRA – UMBRA /NEW!
11320 Points
Stoner, Doom, Proto, Psych
Spokane, Washington, USA
Heavy Psych Sounds

There is no sophomore slump here for KADABRA, as the band has taken several steps forward with the next chapter in their spooky and evil anthology, their second offering, Umbra. Think of it like bands like Uncle Acid, Green Lung, Dead Meadow, Dead Quiet, and The Black Angels all attending a Satanic Mass and then jamming afterwards. Give me an organ driven doomy psych trio all day every day and KADABRA fits that bill perfectly.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

3. HIPPIE DEATH CULT – HELICHRYSUM /NEW!
14472 Points
Heavy Rock, Doom, Heavy Psych
Portland, Oregon, USA
Heavy Psych Sounds

After releasing two critically acclaimed albums HIPPIE DEATH CULT were or on the verge of big things but then their vocalist/keyboardist jumped ship soon to be followed by their original drummer. Now for many bands this would be a disaster but HDC don’t do disasters and so in came a dynamic new drummer and the bands bassist was promoted to lead vocalist, all of which has resulted in them releasing their best album to date. HIPPIE DEATH CULT‘s don’t die…. they just trim down to trio’s.
~ Frazer Jones (Desert Psychlist)

2. DOPELORD – SONGS FOR SATAN /NEW!
20020 Points
Doom, Heavy Doom, Satanic Doom, Doomy Doom
Warsaw – Poland
Blues Funeral Recordings

Since the start of the year, Postwax albums series have regularly trusted the top of the charts: whether the latest offerings from Dead Meadow, Dozer or the REZN / Vinnum Sabbathi split, each new release delivers tons of pleasure, except for our bank account… And the latest one is no exception: it’s the new album by Polish band DOPELORD, Songs for Satan. For those who know DOPELORD, we swim in familiar territory and those who do not appreciate their previous albums will turn back from the first seconds of the telluric Night of the Witch. But others will delight until the last drop of this end-of-the-world doom which, if it does not reinvent the game, magnifies it, glorifies it and satanizes the sacrosanct fuzz god. With the recent reissues released by Electric Valley records, DOPELORD is definitely the big winner of this year and became the band that has recovered the European doom master throne left vacant by the recent and disappointing Monolord offerings. Simply essential.
~ Damien Regnauld (Stoner Freaks Anthology)

1. HOWLING GIANT – GLASS FUTURE /NEW!
24875 Points
Stoner, Prog
Nashville, Tennessee, USA
Magnetic Eye Records

Nashville, Tennessee’s HOWLING GIANT have been around for what seems a while, but their new album, Glass Future, is only their second full length album after a slew of EPs, splits, and comp appearances over the past eight or so years.  The one thing in common with all those EPs, splits, and comp appearances is that all the material is killer. HOWLING GIANT’s unique stoner/psych/prog has never not been great, and now with Glass Future you have their most complete and best output of anything they have given their fans so far. I am picturing a triple bill of HOWLING GIANT, King Buffalo, and Dead Quiet, and I am so here for it.
~ Rich Piva (Musipedia of Metal, FuzzDoomRip)

Getting bigger, better and bolder, the new HOWLING GIANT aims for a huge progressive future. There shall be no shattering of dreams here, we concur with everyone claiming this album to be a new step in the HOWLING GIANT progression. One that sets them on the same kind of pedestal as King Buffalo and Elder. And where those two bands take a more progressive or psychedelic approach respectively, HOWLING GIANT touches it all up with metal and something that sounds like pure punk determination.
~  Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)

How does Nashville’s HOWLING GIANT build on the immersive conflagration Masamune (their half to Ripple Music’s Turned to Stone Chapter 2) lit inside us all? By crafting an entire galaxy within which their epic stories can be born and thrive for aeons to come! Glass Future explodes with a tremendous roar, its celestial grandeur limitless as it reaches for the end of time and space, its imagination sparks wondrous awe upon those who gaze into its luminous core, upon those ears who capture even the most fleeting of passages. The record is nothing short of a spellbinding masterclass of heavy psychedelia restoring some semblance of good in this awful world.
~ JC Cansdale-Cook (The MotorFuzzin’ Ibex)
