For those that know their doom metal, you know about Mirror of Deception. The band is legendary in the doom scene based on further review. Admittedly, The Estuary was my initial exposure to the band but I must say this is what traditional doom is all about. In fact, I would say this album goes above and beyond just being labeled as doom metal. although this didn’t rank on our top 10 list of the year, it was likely due to not as much exposure within the group early on during its release and not because it wasn’t worthy. Tis the case with a lot of albums. So much out there with so little time.
The review on their bandcamp page nails it and I found myself agreeing on each point he makes. Read on if you insist, or go straight to the download codes below and snatch one up before its too late. These go fast, and this one is a real treat.
Below is a snippet that describes what you can expect.
“MoD doesn’t sound like anyone else, they truly have an idiosyncratic take on the genre. It’s weirdly atmospheric with intriguing vocal melodies and trippy but subtle guitar riffs. I feel there’s some hints of Gothic rock in there or maybe crumbs of atmospheric rock but that’s just me trying to find where the uniqueness of their sound comes from.”
Here’s what some Doom Charts Contributor’s had to say.
Doom without annoying growls and demonic rasping, a rare commodity these days but one worth checking out. ~Frazer Jones
Great true doom! A must have! ~Paul Rote
This has got to be one of the best traditional doom releases out this year. It maintains a slow doom pace but keeps it exciting and accessible sounding like a 45rpm Metallica riff played at 33rpm by design. With an added progressive flair, crunchy guitar harmonies and vocals with a gothic touch, The Estuary defies the status quo of Doom Metal and proves why they’re considered masters in the craft. Wow! ~Bucky Brown
