FRIDAY FREEBIE – TŌ YŌ

TŌ YŌ – STRAY BIRDS FROM THE FAR EAST

A final Friday Freebie before we get to that Heavy Underground worshipping Peroration Post! But now, first, another Friday Freebie for an album that made the August 2023 Doom Charts, STRAY BIRDS FROM THE FAR EAST by TŌ YŌ! Out on King Volume Records it is a wonderful mixture of acid folk, psychedelic rock and garage stoner. It’s got all the right feathers to be a brilliant, pluming bird of paradise!

Jasper Hesselink (Weirdo Shrine) wrote: “On Stray Birds From The Far East the band mixes indigenous Japanese folk music with modern psych rock. A short and varied bunch, these six songs in thirty minutes will obviously appeal to fans of Japanese psych like Kikagaku Moyo, but also to more danceable, frivolous modern psych like Yin Yin, and uptempo psychedelic rock like Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. Tō Yō shows all these sides, and adds a dash of character that is very distinguishably their own. Perfect summer music!”

Nick Pipitone (The Third Eye, Monster Riff) wrote: “...the album is a pop-infused psych/acid rock epic about nostalgia for a place yet to be discovered. This concept very much reminds of another Japanese artist I love dearly, the novelist Haruki Murakami, and the epic, surreal books he’s written like Kafka on the Shore and 1Q84. Maybe this yearning for places undiscovered in both Tō Yō’s music and Murakami’s novels are related in some way….” Much more on The Third Eye!

Their own words: “ Tō Yō, the Tokyo-based psychedelic quartet, has announced their debut record Stray Birds From the Far East—a dreamy, pop-infused psych/acid rock concept album about nostalgia for a place yet to be discovered—to be released through King Volume Records on August 18, 2023. The Tō Yō sound is simultaneously unique yet familiar—but it’s also moving. “Our psychedelic sound is at times violent and at times naive,” says vocalist and guitarist Masami Makinom, “but we also believe our sound is meant to awaken the most primitive senses in order to sublimate the rise of the soul and its uncontrollable impulses.” Tō Yō is an ambitious band with an ambitious vision, so it’s no surprise some of their biggest influences are known for complex, groundbreaking visions; Far East Family Band, J. A. Seazer, Flower Travellin’ Band, Kikagaku Moyo, YU Grupa, Ali Farka Touré, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Goat all show up in the list of the band’s most important influences.”
